Signal - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Signal working perfect with 2g or edge but when using cdma (3g i mean) i always have around 2 3 bars maybe 1 bar at times
Other times i have no signal at all..
When i make calls on 3g sometimes i can hear the other person as just noise (some sort of annoying whistling) please anyone tell me how to fix this.. this the best smartphone to date.
WHAT THE HELL!?
Btw auto 2g/3g/lte doesnt do shi' bcause it's always reverting to edge which is stone age speed
I live in egypt..
3g was working fine anyways with my lg g2 earlier..

Poor reception

Does anyone else experience a decrease in signal reception in their DUAL? I have a Nokia N95 8gb and I get a strong signal (5 bars) compared to 2 bars on the DUAL.
KS
As long as you can speak clear, I dont think there would be a problem. Probably the N95 shows full signal in areas where HTC can show 2bars but still take the full signal
The best way to test is by making a call in poor reception areas on both the devices and see which one works better or the same.
Regards,
Carty..
signal
i had that alot and i bought a signal booster from ebay which has made a diffrence it gives me two strong bars where befour i had one which came and went. they are only 2.00 and stick under the battery hope this may help.i am with orange and also have an n95 which has a good strong signal at home.
Goto>Settings>phone>band> then change from Auto to GSM in network type. It might help. soft reset.

yup, that helped me when i saw that on another thread. if you're not using the higher speed internet, it's a good tip
shame the "auto" is biased to faster data networks - i'd like to have it search for a more applicable signal only when you need a data connection

[Q] Improve Cell Signal

I have a very strange issue. At home I get outside / inside I get 1 - 2 bars. If i drive two / three blocks left or right from my house I get 5 bars 3G. I have called t-mobile, and they have sent engs to test. First eng said its the phone and not their service. I explained to them I have 2 blackberrys and two android phones. Same signal on each! They sent another tech out and he said they are not going to improve the coverage in my area. I've been looking around for repeaters, boosters, etc, but I see that nobody makes a booster for the 1700 MHz.
Does anyone have any ideas?
im in chicago and i get the same thing. i get 1 bar 3g, or 2-3 bars on edge. sometimes, my signal drops all together and then comes back a few seconds later. i've told tmobile about this and they said there is no outage in my area. however, my dad's phone is fine; granted it's us cellular but still fine. just has to be tmobile. any of my friends who have tmobile, always lose signal at my place.
but good luck finding any company who will admit that their is something wrong with their service.
I am having the same problem in my house but outside is perfect. I notice that many Samsung Vibrant user has same problem at their residential. Why? Don't know...
im thinkin it could be the phone. cuz i didnt have problems with my old iphone..
It is not the phone. This is typical behavior for 2100 mhz signal. (t-mobile uplink frequency)
Yeah, I know the higher the mhz the harder it is to reach through buildings...one reason why hand radios such as police, fire, ems still use 700 / 800 range.
For my location its like the 3G towers get so close they lose signal near me. There are 3 tmobile towers within a 1 mile radius of me. Im right in the middle of all three.
This has been confirmed by tmobile and their tower website.

i was using tmobile when i had my iphone.. so i still think the phone plays a role in this also
If you've never had a 3G device on T-Mobile there is no comparison to be made.
Secondly just because you're near a tower doesn't mean all of them will have 3G. 1 of those towers could be 3G while the other two are 2G.
T-Mobile's legacy 2G network is PCS AKA 1900 - already a high frequency network. There are a NUMBER of reasons why 3G isn't as strong as 2G. First of all 2G and 3G signal strength is measured differently. 1 bar (or 0 on the Vibrant) can mean choppy, garbling calls on 2G/GSM but on 3G, 1 bar can give you crystal clear calls and good-enough data service. EDGE with 1 bar is next to unbearable.
I actually have a problem because my neighbor has an illegal repeater that is tagged for AT&T. Because AT&T has really poor service in this area, he has it cranked up so high that if you get within half a block of his house all other GSM/EDGE/3G devices start to flake out. I doubt he even gets much better service in his house (I'm sure the repeater is just amplifying garbage signal anyway).

report him to the feds and that'll get rid of all your problems
Yeah, report him to the FCC. There is the threat of a $10K fine but usually thats all it takes to get them to turn of the repeater. If you don't want to be the bad guy, call t-mobile and rat him out.

I wonder if thats why my signal just drops like a rock. I literally turn the corner and I go from 5 bars to 2 bars.
The Vibrant has 4 bars max, not 5. The bar display is very sensitive on the Vibrant, just the same as any other Samsung. Stop focusing on the bars, they're totally different when compared to any other Android phone.

I agree, I have 0 bars inside my house but I am able to place calls upstairs but not downstairs. During my testing I used the bar status and *#*#197328640#*#* for the reading. You can tell with bar status though that it will be 5 bars and drive 2 more blocks its down to 2 bars. Same with *#*#197328640#*#* by the signal numbers.
I didn't read everything just wanted to give a reply really quick to the OP, I live in the chicago land area, work closer to the city and live in the west burbs, on Tmo, at work and around work area i get 3-5 bars all day long on 3g but once i get intside of my house it drops down to 0-1 and phone call quility is very poor.
To help my issue, once i get home i switch to "Use only 2G networks" under Mobile network settings, and once it switchs over i have full 5 everywhere with in my house on edge only and use my wifi if i want to surf the web. But the thing is call quility is back up to 100% when switching over once at home.
IDK if this will help you but worth a shot.
or you might try a more neighborly approach, ie warn him first
i had a problem years ago with a new neighbor (young kid) had rented a house few doors down from me - and was obviously selling drugs - this was in the inner city, the historic district, cars would pull up from time to time and the driver would jump out and run in his back door, spend 5 - 15 minutes and leave, and there'd be 5 to 10 cars a night when he had a shipment in. Problem was, the guy or guys left waiting in his car would be eyeballing the BMWs, volvos etc parked in the center of the block (center of block had two alleys, with a small private parking lot between them. they see or think these cars were easy prey for breakins, and they were - after he moved in we started seeing a breakin every 2-3 weeks
i told him one of the neighbors had asked me was he dealing drugs, as it sure looked like it, and hoping he'd get the hint, i told him it's none of my business but if you are, you might ask the customers to come to the front of your house - we've had way too many breakins into the cars and that neighbor that asked is ready to call the cops.
he didn't get the hint - cops were called, but only after giving him a chance, and they ended up raiding him
you get the point - use a "hypothetical" neighbor that had complained to you, so you don't unnecessarrily start a fence war

I usually get maybe 1-2 bars of service at my house, and on a lot of days it's worse. Sometimes I can't maintain a call at all because the conversation is so broken. I tried doing what you've mentioned here and was surprised when my bars immediately jumped to full and stayed that way....for about 1 minute lol. Then I watched as they slowly dropped again to 1 bar. Which it then flickered up to 2 occasionally. I'm glad it works for you though. It was just funny for me because I'm yelling at my girlfriend "LOOK LOOK!! I HAVE FULL SIGNAL NOW!! Then I got sad face lol.

actually there are quite a few wireless repeaters / boosters for 1700/2100
do a google for 1700/2100 repeaters, it'll pull up quite a few
here's one http://www.jdteck.com/jd55-pr-consumer-repeaters-p-2.html
I have had many phones with tmobile and a previous android the euro hero and never had I only had 0 to 1 bars on 3g in my house and best 3 bars on edge. All my previous had full 3g signal in my house til I got my vibrant so I can say that is the phone and not the service.

Bad reception

Hi all! First post in the Alpha section... Got my Alpha the other day. And i love all about it. But there is one thing thats gets me wondering. It's the reception. All my previous phones got good reception at home.. i get 1-2 bars. So my question is. Does anybody experience this issue? I have experienced SMS delays and chipped calls.
Location : Sweden
Provider : Telenor
Look at actual signal strength in dBm. Bars are arbitrary and vary from phone to phone.

It could just be a faulty device... I'll try replacing my sim first. If that's the issue.
If that's not working. I'll have it replaced.
Edit: Had my sim replaced. Still experiencing bad reception. It goes as low as -105dbm... where my z2 had around -70 (same network, same location)... that's bad. Any ideas what I can do to solve this?
Yeah keep me updated - my Alpha also seems to have noticeably weaker reception than my iPhone on 4G (800mhz band).
Hoping its a modem firmware/software power output thing and not a hardware thing.
Same here, looks like the reception is 1-2 bars worse than other phones.
But I have no experience of delayed SMS or failed calls and the speeds on internet is very good.

seem like Iphone 4s signal problem with metal frame blocking antena-reciver,hmmm
Signal problems
Hi, I'm on my second Alpha and first sim, I have an alternative sim yet to try but have chated on Twitter with another user who found no improvement with a new sim and changed phones completely. I'm with three. My signal goes completely when I'm sitting with other three users whose phones work fine. I think it's a phone fault and am considering sending it back now.
Hi guys,
I noticed something interesting with my Alpha:
As you, I have a poor signal strength. But when calling someone then the signal bar jump to full force instantly!
Could it be a link with BIG little technology?

Well, for those who have the same problem, I deactivated the 4G. Then the signal strength is better. I made the test: 2 bars with 4G enabled in network settings, full signal when 3G only.
As a possible future Alpha owner, question.
Are you on a USA Network with the Qualcomm Alpha ?
Or in Europe on Exynos Octacore ?

I am using a european Exynos one
The alpha is my second LTE able phone. Both showed a completely different signal bar reading when using LTE (and checking in lecture, how Signal strength is meassured for GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/LTE it shows, that LTE uses a completely revised scheme to calculate the signal strength)
I haven't made any speed measurements yet, but my feeling is:
(4G) With LTE, even without any highlighted bar i can use internet, webpages load fast, other lookups work.
(3G,3.5G) With H/H+ , and at least 1 bar highlighted, internet works
(2.5G) Edge and at least 1 to two bars, internet is available... three bars are better for it to be worthwhile
(2G) G only - forget it. I'll need 4 bars to surf the web, and i must wait. Chat works if i'm lucky and got at least 1-2 bars.
Apart from that: the signal bars in 2G and 3G show the strength of the signal - but aren't any measure of the quality of the signal. They show anything that sends on the frequency/timeslot of the 2G/3G signal you're receiving. If you've got heavy interferences, you'll get full bars but it all is static.
(Like - in a disco, you've got loud music, and people speaking very loudly to you - that would be full bars, but not the best place to speak to each other....)
I don't understand exactly what the value used by 4G exactly means, but it sounds like it only represents the LTE cell you do want to receive - so it should be more accurate and cutting out the noise somehow
I think you're right ! This is my feeling too. In 4G calls are always perfect for me even with one bar.
In settings we can also have a more accurate highlight on to the signal strength in Db.
Guys this alpha is full of mysteriousness !
I think samsung did it ON purpose.. ! Save battery??
I have weaker signal too.. on iphone 5 is full and i had on my former Honor 6 full as hell..
But I dont konw IF samsung wants to save power by this .. I think it has no much influence as iphone 5 nor Honor 6 had full signal and battery never got down fast.. when I had Honor 6 100% at night it was 98 % in morning..
Another thing with aplha ,when i leave phone in sleep half hour or longer , th emobile network stops and wont come up...
I have to restart phone or turn airplane on ad off.. then H+ or 4G appears..
I have the issue with mobile data too, it seems to also do it when it has been on WiFi for a while and you change to mobile data.
no service
Hey guys,
I have a very bad reception with my Samsung Galaxy Alpha when i'm in the subway in Paris. To be honnest I have no service, no sms, no calls, and for sure no internet...
I can see people using their smartphones inside the subway without problems.
I had an iPhone 4 during 3 years, and didn't have any problem with it when I was in the subway.
I'm using the same phone carrier "Bouygues Telecom"
So what's wrong with this Galaxy Alpha ?

looks lik eit might be a software problem .. we need to contact samsung bout it or complain on their site.. but guys all of us we must complain not just one person cos they wont sort it out..
Hey people,
I'm also having connection issues:
When I boot the phone it's working is at should: Switching between 4G/3G/EDGE etc. After a while the connection sort of times out. I can only make emergency calls. It works flawlessly for up to a day, or it can only work for like 5 minutes.
Rebooting the device fixes this temporarily. My service provider (Hi in NL) has already sent me a new simcard which doesn't help. They are now saying I should send it over for repair.
Btw: When i leave it in CDMA only, the problem takes much longer to arise (like a couple of days).
I can see that people who have posted in this thread are having the same issues. I'm wondering if this is firmware or hardware related, as I want avoid sending over my phone. If it IS a firmware bug, sending it over for repair obviously isn't going to fix this.
I have sent an e-mail to Samsung BeNeLux. Like Simona Simmy says, we should all write to Samsung

Mobile radio active

How to get rid of this ? I get a really high amount of time where the s6 edge is mobile radio active... and that is present in almost everything in battery usage... like google services and whatsapp and tinfoil.. snapchat instagram nothing else..
I am running gsm/wcdma i have the ****tiest signal ever on 3g vodafone i live in egypt.. we only have 3g here and 2g
Just saying..
Anyways on 2g it's getting all the bars fine
But really slow internet speed and ****ty call quality so i am leaving it on wcdma most of the time and its only getting 2 bars .. 1 bar sometimes none so any clue what the hell is wrong with my cellphone.?
Didnt have any issues regarding network with my old g2 maybe 4 bars 3 bars min
Having the same problem. Would appreciate if someone knows a fix. I believe this could be a bug in Lollipop?
Make some voice so Google really fix this long time bug since lollipop released. Worst is facebook, that eat up the battery within 3H and was 98% active, WITHOUT lanching or using the app at all. Installed it for mine gf, to register LINE only. Removed it directly when found out it drained all the battery.
Mark the thread and put a star so Google would fix it someday?

Weird 4G ?

This is a strange one as iam not having any issue with 4G as such but have noticed some strange behaviour!
For the most part i seem to only get 1 bar of signal (although everything works fine / fast enough) If i put my sim card in my iphone however then i consistently have full bars / signal strength! I understand each device measures signal strength differently but iam doubting that Full signal strength on he iphone is the equivalent to 1 bar on Samsung?
Another strange feat is that as soon as i make a call, Like literally within 2 seconds of pressing the call button, the signal jumps to full and stays there until the call has ended and then drops again! The opposite happens when connected to wifi. If iam lucky enough to have more then 2 bars and i connect to wifi, it immediately drops to 1 bar!
Ironically web pages etc are all loading fine and everything seems ok but it def seems strange also! Anyone else having any issues?
When you make a phone call the phone switches from 4g to 3g or even 2g whichever is available because 4g is only used for data afaik and that's why the signal jumps to full bars. That is normal.
If everything else is OK I would leave it alone

Ah ok yeah everything is working fine! It just bugs me seen only 1 bar or 2 most but seemingly its because iam using 4g plus which is faster then 4g! Some guy i spoke to told me that 2 bars of 4g plus is better then 5 bars of standard 4g
I was just concerned and worrying as ive read lots about the s9 having issues with 4g
