Does anyone have any tricks to getting better results from the heart monitor? It seems that sweat causes problems. I am wondering if there is some way to work around that. Maybe some material that will impede the sweat but not the sensor?

Short answer, No. Why? Understanding how the sensor works will give you a better understanding of why.
The sensor emits light into the skin which is then reflected back, this is how you get your readings. (This is why apple for instance has issues with tatoos) Little things like tattoo, sweat and even hair follicles, lotion, scars, etc could all impede the readings. This is why hospitals use the finger sensors along with some Samsung devices. These give the most accurate, un-obscured readings. Hope this helps answer you question.

Regarding GPS/WiFi Issues. Mod the casing?

So, I've been spending the better part of an hour scouring over the Anandtech teardown gallery of the prime trying to get a decent understanding of the GPS/WiFi antennas and the underlying design flaws which contribute to these features messing up; namely the giant metal shield of a cover and the placement of the antennas. They're not exactly in a bad place, but I guess Asus assumed that if you were using WiFi/GPS with your tablet then you would always do so with the screen facing the AP/satellites. In reality, mine at least, it's the back of the device generally pointing to these things. Maybe I place my network hubs in strange places and enjoy astronomy apps too much?
Now on to the actual question, especially to any of you who have gotten the device and been brave enough to peek inside it yourself; would creating my own plastic windows/metal grates within the aluminum backing actually help anything? Do these antennas broadcast a 360 degree signal or are they directional? The motherboard itself would allow decent signal to get to the transmitter wouldn't it, so long as the case does?
My order isn't set to ship for another month, but I think I'll be getting this tablet regardless of the known issues, though the audio/video problems with the miniHDMI port make me a bit nervous. This thing will still be a power-house even as better spec'd tablets come out, just like my single-core Desire Z is still pretty relevant and decent. Just not top-of-the-line, and it wasn't for any real amount of time, but that's just how these things go.
Ideally, the antenna would couple to the whole backplate, making a big slot antenna (but then it starts to risk being too directional). It's just as probably that the issue is noise or feeble pogo-pin connectors.
If you do make a cut-out, it needs to be about 1 wavelength larger than the outline of the antenna (and you risk de-tuning the antenna if it was designed to operate in close proximity to a groundplane)

Coupling to the backplate, though increasing power decreases accuracy doesn't it?
I hadn't thought of the pogo-pins as a possible culprit, that's certainly possible.
Couldn't I make a couple windows and retro-fit either some plastic or plexi-glass into the design? Would that help keep from de-tuning, especially if kept to a small size with accurate positioning?

*Edit: After re-reading and thinking, I actually understand what you're saying. Plastic or no, any cutout would need to be a very specific size larger than the antenna itself which would take more than I would be able to do I'm sure. Oh well, I know I'll still love this thing, so long as the miniHDMI works properly, I'll be happy. Phone's GPS works like a dream.
And now I apologize. I found it odd not finding topics on this, but now I've found them and have a bit more of an understanding on the matter. Namely that the cpu seems to have a strong possibility of creating interference for the chip. The casing apparently just worsens the issue.

How sure are we about this? I've read that Apple puts their WiFi antenna behind the black plastic logo on their WiFi-only models for exactly this reason. Not only that, but on the 3g models they simply have all the wireless modules placed on top of the device where they are covered with black plastic as well.
It seems to me that a stupid plastic apple cutout - a complex geometric shape - is not likely capable of being as "tuned" as a rectangular cutout. Yet, I think it's safe to say that the 3G and WiFi versions of the iPad have similar if not identical WiFi performance. That is to say, I don't think manufactures are using the aluminum back for anything other than looking pretty. I think it's safe to hack away at.

Maybe for some heat dispersion too?
I wish they would start selling the back plate only (like they do with ipods etc)
That way i'm sure someone could cutout a shape and try the antenna behind a plastic window etc, but youd always have the option to put the original back.
I wouldnt mind modding mine after the garantee has ran out.
I think Asus might consider making an after-market backplate that they would fit to your Prime after they have fully tested the issues.

I've been thinking that even if Asus didn't some third party will. And I'm willing to get to cutting the day it arrives if I can determine it'll help. However, I don't want just an open grate for dust and junk to get into. Maybe just a thin fabric filter, or should I close it up with some plastic/plexiglass and epoxy?

I don't see why plastic wouldn't work. It's what the iPad has and it seems to work out in that case.
You should consider cross-posting this in the "General" forum. It is a "question", but the General forum gets a LOT more eyeballs.

i agree, this post should be on general... this would be a great solution, a homemade plastic ipad-like hole... we need it, and if third party doesnt do this, we will have to do it...

I will be, but it's still a good two-four weeks before I have mine. All mentions of it I've seen in general never get answered, I haven't seen anyone comment on whether or not they've tried without the backing. Probably because most aren't willing to try and heat up the glue to do so or damage the thing in the process...
Some expertise required
Does the aluminium back plate attenuate both wifi and gps signals? From what I have read it seems to be confirmed that this is the situation, although other factors such as internal interference have NOT been discounted, nor has the connection method (gold pogo pin) between motherboard and the antennae (blackened out pcb strip). I have noted on the TF101 Transformer teardown, a very similar placement of both WIFI and GPS antennae to that on the TF201 Transformer Prime - near the top edge and adjacent each other. Looking at similarities between models, an obvious and perhaps too simple explination would be the aluminium back plate. There does seem to be some interest in experimenting with making some holes (similar to the speaker grill), on the back plate in front of the antennae in the hope that it MAY improve reception. I have read numerous posts and was hoping that someone may have tried this. I don't want to hear about the merits of having or not having a GPS and how it matters to them personaly etc - lets focus people, but whether someone has had the ability and knowledge to try it. I am unsure given the wavelength of both GPS and WIFI (1.2 / 1.5 Ghz) whether mutliple small holes would do it. I feel that a transparent plastic window may be required. I do not believe the back plate is used a coupled ground plate etc. and it is used purely as the chasis. Come on - there has to be some smart engineering graduates/professionals who are willing to give this a go...it would have been nice if they were paid by ASUS but that seems unlikely. Point to note - that the GPS and WIFI antennas (there are two for the WIFI on the TF201) would be obtaining some reception through the front gorilla glass and plastic (on which the antennae are mounted). My question is - what and IF modifications are necessary to the back plate to obtain better reception. Any ideas?
I have not seen a single test where anyone proved it was the back plate. Anyone have a link to a test that shows the prime navigating successfully without the back plate?

The little end on the s-pen is stuck in?

So I have noticed for a while that my s-pen is acting weird buy I found out today that the little transparent end that touches the screen is stuck in and not out like it used to be. Anyone know how I can get it out?

I've gone through 3 notes and they all moved a little. My current one is a bit wobbly. Every other Wacom stylus I have moves a little bit.

It does not "retract" up and down, or have any travel. Yes it wiggles a tiny bit...

Hm. I don't know...i swear mine pushes in and out as i place pressure on it. I know for a fact my other Wacom pens do.

Hmm, I dunno, maybe mine is messed up too then I actually have used the S Pen very little, but when I used in the store I poked at the S-Pen and its tip was "solid" feeling, and mine is too.
I read that it can detect 255 different levels of pressure, however on mine, it seem like it's more like 3. Maybe wrong thread, but...
S-Memo, if I put zero pressure on the pen and draw, nothing draws. A tiny bit of pressure and I get a light or thin drawing, depending on tool.. More pressure and it darkens/gets thicker. But pretty much nowhere in between. Maybe not the best app to try it.
Well, Multitouch Visualizer 2 I can see a wide amount of pressure sensitivity, but in real world use (at least in S-Memo) I only really see two. I suspect app limitation...

In S-Memo, switch to brush (which darkens with pressure), and you'll see finer pressure responses.

Did, still only saw two levels as far as I could tell. I looked around for some other P-Pen apps, but so far not seeing anything.. Maybe Autodesk will release another version of Express Paint for a few bucks with S-Pen support.....
Mine is the same. Just a bit of wiggle room to it. Can't really see it physically moving up and down.

Sure it does. It's a pressure sensitive tip. Has about 1mm of travel.

Don't see 1mm of travel on mine, but yes it moves a tiny bit. IMO it seems like there should be more travel in order to really use the 128 levels of pressure sensitivity. I'm going to find and check out a "real" wacom stylus and look at its tip for giggles.

E-Compass seems completely off?

I have noticed recently (perhaps related to the .21 update?) that Google sky was not tracking well with my movements... so I tried 2 compass applications to validate the e-compass performance.
The compass behavior is really squirrely and seems to have very little correlation to which direction the tablet is pointed.
It seems that the compass must have worked better in the past as Google Sky used to work great.
Can anyone else report if their compass is working properly? What app did you use to verify it? What orientation did you hold your TFP to get a good result?
Mine has never worked correctly, and I've been trying off and on since I first got it in December, before any official ICS update was even released. I always assumed it was related to the poor GPS performance.

It never worked reliably. I'm sorry but I am skeptical about your statement "worked great". Search this forum for my posts mentioning the e-compass as almost unusable.
I once had fun watching the compass readings constantly revolve, making full 360 deg sweeps in just a little over a minute (sic!). A recalibration brought back the unreliable, miserable readings.
Yes this is a problem. But can be fixed by a simple step. Just move, rotate your tab in all directions (up down, left right and on its own AXIS)
This should fix the compass. In my case, thus would fix it but would revert back

Make sure you do not have mock locations enabled in the developer settings....This throws off the compass
google skymap sucks for me too. I'll double check to see if mock locations is on, I don't think it is, I've fiddled with all the skymap settings with no results.
I have to calibrate my compass using GPS Status every time I want to use it. After that, it seems to work fine.
There seems to be a problem with keeping calibration settings for the compass after each reboot...
These e-compasses do not use the magnetic field to give direction. They totally rely on GPS. GPS accuracy requires movement. The compass gets 2 (or more) readings, and then caculates the location and direction from them.
Even a good GPS device like Garmin, will have difficulty. If you are stationary, the gps reading will vary. The best accuracy for consumers is about 10 ft. If you had a test app, and were stationary....you would see that the individual gps readings are grouped in about a 10 ft radius from your position, with a few being outside that.

Please stop diffusing inaccurate information.
Prime is equipped with a physical magnetometer. PERIOD.
You can try to recalibrate the compass by moving the device in a large figure of eight in a horizontal plane, outside and away from any ferrous metal.
Also, beware of any magnetic devices, fastenings or closures in protective cases you might buy. Don't park your Prime on a convenient HiFi loudspeaker top!

The Prime's keyboard itself has a magnet in it, and I'd imagine the Prime does as well to register that field so that the screen shuts off when you close it.
But yes! Keep your Primes off of awesome speakers lol, as well as all your other precious electronics
I haven't actually played with the compass all that much as I've fretted over WiFi/BT and GPS. I know that my accelerometer consistently feels off: until I actually run tests on it. I think many of our issues (outside of the aluminum body and bad choice in wireless module) really are drivers and apps' implementations of h/w as opposed to the h/w itself.

I do not know why the hell you would post this. The meter does detect magnetic fields. Why do you think they call it an ecompass. Put a magnet close to it and open a compass app. Even your GPS explanation is horrible and incorrect.

Okay I have read this and tried on an android phone with no success. Just to clear things up, do I keep the prime oriented the same way through the figure eights or point it through, kinda like a kid playing with a toy car driving in a figure eight. Also do I keep the prime horizontal as well? sorry to sound like a dolt, but I can see many ways to do a figure eight with the prime. Your Horizontal plane was a help.
As far as I know, just keep the device pointing the same way and horizontal.
If your compass does not respond to this, I suggest it might be stuffed.

I'm using the m5 pro for drawing, but run into an issue with
the pressure sensitivity. The pen doesn't seem to register pressure
below a certain threshold. Then as pressure is increased, suddenly it does. When
drawing, this results in a dotted line, as opposed to a line with continuously
varying opaqueness. See movie above for an example.
Hoping someone can try and replicate this, so I can find out if this is
a design flaw, or a fault in my tablet or pen. Brush settings are quoted in
the movie's description..

in case anyone is interested: meantime I was able to test the same app on an ipad, and it basically shows the same behaviour, though the ipad is a bit more sensitive. There I also see a broken line. So I think its not an issue with the device itself, just a limitation of the software and technology. You cant seem to beat the sensitivity of a siple pencil (lead)...
I find it heavy but sensitive. Any contact with the screen will draw. Android registers even the distance of the pen from the screen and its angles in the MotionEvent traces so I'd say you just need to tweak your app to make it oversensitive.

Yes I also think its due to the app. Unfortunately in infinit painter I cant find a way to change the pressure curves or something. I'm gonna try some other ones..

Question Compass performance

Can someone explain why the compass of EVERY android phone I have ever owned has sucked? From a cheap HTC Aria to an uber-expensive S23U? Specifically, the compass seems to require re-calibration very frequently. For example, if you ask for walking directions in gmaps on an iPhone, the blue cone indicating the direction of motion is always correct and pointing in the appropriate direction. On every android phone I have owned it is frequently grossly off without calibration, sometimes by as much as 180 degrees. This affects the usability of the phone in augmented reality apps, whether it is hiking, figuring out where the sun is going to rise or set, where the milky way is going to be, etc. And even after the compass is calibrated it tends to drift for a few minutes after calibration, and cannot be trusted for critical use, for example "is the sun going to set between these two spires over there".
There may be regional magnetic anomalies.

OMG, do you mean Tycho Magnetic Anomaly 1?
My experience also. Have owned almost every iPhone model and the compass has always been flawless. Recently spent a week in Gran Canaria and used Google Maps on my S23 ultra for hours everyday. The compass was almost way off all the time. Calibration could help a minute and the it was off again.
The wife's and kids iPhones of course worked perfectly. I had to swallow my pride and ask them for direction a lot of times Love the phone but the compass is really a disaster most of the times

You can gauge NS/EW direction by streets, landmarks or the rising/setting sun. After a time it becomes second nature. Use anything at hand that works including distant sounds.
Or simply use gps plus maps. I navigated for decades using only maps and cross highways, roads, streets etc to determine my location and direction. Didn't use a compass; formed a rough idea of north using the map and/or visual clues. Today it's so simple to do many don't have basic map or navigation skills anymore. Getting lost means you get by the seat of your pants navigational training... try that in Boston

The compass works smooth and true on my N10+ except in the present of magnetic anomalies. Maybe iPhone is using GPS

iPhones use a different sensor and calibration method that does not require the user to draw a figure-eight. Instead, the iPhone's calibration process is automatic and continuously adjusts the sensor's readings based on the phone's movement and orientation. Don't ask me why, in 2023, Samsung's flagship still requires drawing a figure-eight to recalibrate its sensor almost every single time, while my iPhone does it automatically. It's just ridiculous.

Instead, the iPhone's calibration process is automatic and continuously adjusts the sensor's readings based on the phone's movement and orientation. Don't ask me why, in 2023, Samsung's flagship still requires drawing a figure-eight to recalibrate its sensor almost every single time, while my iPhone does it automatically. It's just ridiculous.

That's not the magnetic compass. I normally don't need to calibrate that but I only have one game that uses those sensors (might be the orientation sensor, there are several). My Samsung is very well behaved and predictable... likely a 3rd party app that's mucking yours up.
DevChek is handy for seeing and checking sensors.

Certainly not my experience. I have seen the compass on Android off by as much as 180 degrees, and without calibration is almost.alaays off by around 45 degrees. Calibrating it makes it true... till next. Time you shut off the screen after which the figure 8 song and dance needs to be repeated.

Don't see that but I rarely use it. Not sure what the calibration suppose to do unless there's nearby ferrous metal.
I have to add... in a city with lots of tall metal buildings, I often have trouble getting the figure 8 to do anything anyway.

Yeah if bracketed by dense ferrous metal it will screw it up. It's pointless to calibrate in that case.
I can get pretty near to heavy trucks, in a large metal building and it's still fairly accurate.
However if I put in between two upright thick 8 inch C channels about 2 feet apart it goes way off by 45°.
