Factory image - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

If I wanted to flash a factory image straight from Google, do I just flash it through fastboot and besides having bootloader unblocked is there anything else I need? Is it like running an RUU? Thanks for the help...

Just download Wugs toolkit from this link and use that. Works flawlessly for me. You just need to be unlocked but the toolkit can help with that.

That link does help, but I was wondering if I can run all them commands without running the recovery command? That way I have the stock rom and kernel but keep the custom recovery.
Sent from my Nexus 9 using XDA Free mobile app

You can run any one of them you want. I'd recommend you only flash the system, cache and boot images. You'll have to re-root by flashing supersu in your custom recovery, hope it's Twrp, cwm is poorly supported.

I unlocked the phone using rumrunner, and then loaded cwm recovery. I then installed the superuser, and it appears to succeed. Then I checked root with root checker and it said sorry you don't have proper root. I have checked my steps again and again, but am still pretty new to htc.

are you s-off?
what version of SuperSu did you flash? What Rom are you running? The latest SuperSU 1.94? Doesn't work for 4.2.2. If your S-off why and have CWM recovery why not flash a custom rom?
I am trying to do just that. I can't really find any up to date info to help me step by step, so I am piecing together the newest info I can find. I am a little confused right now. Stuck on trying to root. I flashed superuser-3.1.3-arm-signed.zip

Do I need to root to load a custom rom? Is s-off =root on htc? I guess I have deleted everything off the phone and now it is stuck at the white htc screen. I can get to recovery but did not perform any backups. I can get to bootloader and recovery and I guess need to sideload a rom. I haven't had time the last few days to try anything new. Thanks for the input, I need to fix my dna so I can get off of this note 2 I don't like. I don't understand why htc doesn't sell better.... my dna was the **** before I ruined it!
S-off is secure flag removed meaning you can install unsigned firmware (eng hboot) unlocked means you can write to system partition and other secure partitions. Root means you have an app (like supersu) able to have other apps execute admin (root for Linux) commands. If you have cwm installed, just side load a pre rooted Rom from development sections.

Thanks, I will try the sideload. Any ideas where I can find such a rom. Oh wait I think I s-on ed trying to fix it.... will I still be able to fast boot USB and unlock again for s-off? I sure hope so.

Flash superuser in recovery.
Sent from my EVO using XDA Free mobile app
As mentioned, superuser would do the trick. SuperSU is another option out there too. I'd download both just in case you have issues. Most roms work well with both, but some roms (under 10% I'd guess) play nicer with one than the other.

If that doesn't work, try an older version from the SuperSU thread here. Seems I recall someone else having issues flashing the latest SuperSU to their phone, but an older version worked fine, for whatever reason.

Can you give more info about your phone? ROM (really only need to know if you're on new partitions), method of unlock & S-off, versions of HBOOT & TWRP or other recovery? I've had issues flashing .zips with certain HBOOT/TWRP combinations even while being HTC-dev unlock and firewater S-off, which is (according to others more competent than I) the ideal unlock/s-off combo.

I'm assuming you're not S-OFF or SuperCID.
Hmmmm... Okay here's what to do I need you to follow these exact steps.
Extract the CM10 rom to it's own folder
Take the boot.img and place it in the windroid kernel folder (assuming that there's a kernel folder)
Open the windroid tool and select "Flash Kernel" and select the boot.img from the rom.
Now follow the instructions (I think you have to be in fastboot mode, I'm not sure.)
I think this procedure is right, I'm not entirely sure. I haven't had this problem in almost a year, since I decided to get S-OFF and SuperCID.
OK...the boot animation for cm is still going 2 hrs+ probably the recovery isn't right though no? Flashed last cm official with 5.0.2.9. I'll do as u suggested the for your input. And no idea for s-off sorry this phone is foreign to me

It won't boot, it's stuck in a bootloop because you haven't done S-OFF or SuperCID. It's what makes the custom roms work.
Please try my suggestion. And performing S-OFF is really not that hard, it's very very easy. Although most times I know that it's done on the Asian or Unbranded version of the Amaze that's stuck on GB.
Your recovery is fine, I can assure you that. Only KitKat roms require 4ext version 6 to flash properly.
Another idea just popped into my head, go into your recovery and enter the advanced settings, scroll down and you should see something called "Smartflash"
Make sure that this is enabled.
Do a full wipe (factory reset>cache>dalvik>all partitions except SD card) and then re-install your CM10.
Ok...thanks again for taking the time to help. I know it can be frustrating if the same probably basic issue comes up but phones do vary. Learned something new

Well you see this isn't the same exact problem that everybody else has, ultimately it's the same cause but like you said, it varies.
You're on ICS, from Telsus. Most of the people who create posts are from the Unbranded Amaze crying about their device being stuck in a bootloop or that their phone unexpectedly blew up and killed all their hopes and dreams.
I don't think there's much posts about Telsus Amaze, hopefully someone will see your post and know more than I do and provide more information.
Flash 4ext Touch Recovery from windroid tool.. turn on smart flash in 4ext, wipe all partitions except sdcard. Flash cm10/11 again. Reboot. Let me know how it goes.

Sent from my RAZR HD using XDA Free mobile app
Any kitkat Rom for amaze won't flash on twrp/cwm recovery since those recoveries are outdated and haven't been updated for our device. Since your device is S-ON with ICS Rom Telsus it just needs 4ext touch recovery with smart flash on. Kernel won't flash on cwm/twrp recovery with S-ON since there's no smart flash option in them that's why your phone was stuck in cm boot screen. Good thing you figured it out.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I didn't figure it out u guys did lol....by first flashing kernel with boot image of ROM worked for me. So now running jb with cwm 5.0.2.6. So just to be sure to put kk on what's safest procedure if you could...and again thank you both phew!!!
Sent from my RAZR HD using XDA Free mobile app
Read my previous posts if you need to flash a kitkat Rom, you just need 4ext recovery with smart flash turned on. That's the safest procedure. Good luck!

If you want to flash any KitKat Rom we have for the Amaze, you need the latest version of 4ext recovery.
I'm really not sure how S-On devices are prepared for this so hopefully just having smartflash on will work. If it gets stuck in the bootloop again, you can try flashing the boot.img and see if it boots up properly
Thx again guys...kitkat installed woohoo and didn't need to flash boot worked from install zip

Need help with OTA

[Q] How to root HTC Droid DNA for absolutely noob

I read a lot of guide on this forum but all of them are outdated or too hard to understand for me . So please help me root this phone step by step, thanks!
Im using Android 4.4.2 , not modified anything.
I see there alot of autoroot app out there, is there any of them work for our device?
Ps: what is the difference between this device and the butterfly, are they the same?
They are similar hardware wise with a few differences. To s-off/unlock/root on 4.4.2, you will use Sunshine then flash a custom recovery of your choice.

Not for the DNA. Blame Verizon. They block access to HTCdev. No Verizon phone made after the Rezound can unlock the bootloader via HTCdev.

I am at the point of installing Sunshine. Now wanting to gain permanent root, so I can change ROMs if desired.
I tried installing TWRP through some ADB commands, but had no success. Can you assist? I also read that after installing a recovery, I should install / flash UI.zip, but had trouble locating it; the couple links I tried were dead.
Can I gain permanent root on 4.4.2, how?
Thanks
