[Q] Ubuntu preinstalled vs ported - Ubuntu Touch Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'd like to try Ubuntu Touch. I have a Galaxy Nexus and a Nexus 4. It probably makes the most sense to keep the Nexus 4 as my "working" phone and install Ubuntu on the Galaxy Nexus. How easy is it to do this? Neither phone is rooted.
What are the advantages of going with Ubuntu preinstalled on a BQ Aquaris E4.5 or Meizu MX4 compared to installing a port?

I use Ubuntu touch on my nexus 4, which works pretty good. I don't know all differences to the bq phone build, but I know that the today scope and the nearby scope are only on the bq phone.

Is there a github or other repository we can follow for this?

Sadly, support for the Galaxy Nexus has been dropped. Instead, the Nexus 4 became the reference hardware.

The advantage of a commercial Ubuntu Phone is just that you get some additional closed-source scopes which the hardware manufacturer provides.
However, those from the BQ phone get released to the Ubuntu Store at the moment.
Ubuntu development happens on launchpad.net.

Ubuntu for phones uses Android as its base, so does that mean features that are broken in ICS and JB builds would still be broken in UFP?
Not really. I've spent a lot of time with these as I hope to bring it to the Atrix. But it's not based off those builds, In the video he describes that it is ment to be compatible with any devices that run android. It is actually built off their operating system simmilar to windows 8 and windows 8 RT. It will be released for the samsung galaxy nexus. It will function similar to how their OS runs on computers, where it comes with one OS, but it will be compatible with another. Ubuntu Phone will hopefully be able to run on devices that run android. meaning that as long as you don't have an iphone, or windows phone, you should be able to run it. Which to me is really exciting as I see a lot of promise with this OS, especially along side our lapdocks
That would be amazing if we could get a full supported ubuntu for the atrix. Im looking to reutilize mine (despite its broken digitizer)

Unfortunately, almost nothing stated in here is accurate.
The only Android dependency is the Android Kernel. So any issues we have, would still exist in Ubuntu for Phones.
I do hope the Ubunutu OS will be able to run on my atrix 4g. But yes, all android issues will exist if we have to stick with the atrix 4g kernal.
IF ported Galaxy R 3.x.x kernel gonna fully working before late Q4 2013, I assume, ubuntu for android will working flawlessly on our atrix

Ubuntu For Tablets

Ubuntu Just released this video showing off their new OS for tablets. In the video, they are using what looks like a Nexus 10. But what do you guys think? Would you use this if we were able to put it on our TouchPad? Don't know if that will be possible. But just asking to see what you guys think of it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h384z7Ph0gU&hd=1
EDIT: Actually, I dont think our TouchPad meets the minimum requirements. But I guess we will see.
Good article on Engadget as well... looks promising
Just read this too, on omgubuntu.com really hoping it can be ported!

If this is running on top of the latest version of Ubuntu for ARM and seeing that there are working versions of Ubuntu out there for the Touchpad, then it seems possible we would get this assuming its source code is released and someone is willing to port it. Their requirements are a bit steep (2GB RAM and Cortex A15 processor), but seeing that they are providing a test version for the Nexus 7 which is 1GB of RAM and quad core A9, then the Touchpad may be fine (not sure if the Touchpad is A8 or A9 or if that would even matter)

I dont believe its running on the top of anything. Its its own OS. I'm hoping it could be ported to the TouchPad. I'd like to try it out.
Apps...
1. If my app isn't on Ubunto, well...
2. Webos was there...
3. But i think, windows 7 will be my last tie to Microsoft, if my app is on Ubunto.

Actually the Touchpad has an A7. Here is a link comparing versions: http://www.bdti.com/InsideDSP/2011/11/17/ARM
That said, I like the new layout and just hope the Touchpad can run it smoothly. There is already a functional alpha of Ubuntu 13.04 for the touchpad (in the Other Development forum), so I can't imagine it will not happen.

This is something I am really hoping can happen.

That is normal Ubuntu without the tablet interface but that alpha works really nice though. I'm an Ubuntu desktop user since 2008.
i would so love this. I want to check out this new mobile ubuntu so bad and would rather flash my touchpad than my galaxy nexus.
Here's hoping someone picks it up and makes it happen.
This is a good video of the OS running really well on the Nexus 10.

Straight from Ubuntu's website, details are coming tomorrow about porting Ubuntu Mobile to other devices:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Porting
Also of significance is a bunch of Cyanogenmod hardware code showing up on: http://phablet.ubuntu.com/gitweb
I wonder if this means it will be easier to compile for devices supported by Cyanogenmod, which would make a Touchpad port much easier.
Awesome can't wit to try on nexus 7:good:

Its the real deal. You can get this on any Nexus device right now. Just be aware, its not fully functional. Its just a preview to show off what it will feel and look like when it is done. And if your a developer, it gives you something to test your apps out on. Thats it.
Hopefully, once the OS really matures and becomes functional, someone will build it for us, seeing as its just as easy as building CM 10.1

The only problem with that is that we don't have CM10.1
CM10.1 is completely do-able for the TP. Many other devices using the same chip set are now into nightly builds. Its just a matter of setting it up for the TP. CN already as an alpha build in 4.2.1 for testing.

10.1
I can not wait for 10.1 will be nice to be able to port Ubuntu to the touchpad.
Oh I'm excited and love a beautiful interface!
Pretty solid so far and you never know...the dHacker29 and Hashcode have already begun work on Ubuntu for the Droid Bionic and to me this means anything is possible.
All I need now is a way to running something like Safestrap and boot multiple builds on my Touchpad with 32gb of storage. I could see running webOS, JB, and Ubuntu for Tablets on my Touchpad. Sorli...

Ubuntu on any phone with cm10.1

Hi guys just see this in the portal of XDA:
The release of the Ubuntu Touch Developer Preview yesterday prompted a lot of activity on the Ubuntu Touch forum, and for good reason. The concept of Ubuntu on phones and tablets has been desired by many for a long time, and so it is great to see Canonical embrace the idea and set out on their own.
When Ubuntu posted the announcement about the Developer Preview, they mentioned that they would be releasing the instructions on how to port Ubuntu Touch to other devices other than the Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10. Today they did so, and as we mentioned yesterday, they will be holding a “Ubuntu On-Air” at 15:00 GMT today (Friday, February 22) where they’ll have two of the lead developers in a Google Hangout to talk about the project as well. For those that miss it, they will surely have a replay available at that address as well.
The instructions for porting are pretty straightforward. Since Ubuntu Touch is just a CyanogenMod 10.1 base with the Ubuntu Touch interface running in a container and accessed via chroot, if your device currently runs CM10.1 then you’ll be able to port this. The instructions for porting are found on Ubuntu’s Wiki and are quite extensive, so make sure you follow them EXACTLY.
so could some dev give us a new joy

Cant any of our good devs manage to give hus a new life for our phones?

[Q] Strip down Ubuntu Touch for server application?

My Nexus 4 has a broken digitizer. Instead of fixing it or selling it out, I figure I'll use it as a server since it has better specs than some of the Android-on-a-stick boxes out there. Ubuntu Touch installs without a hitch, but on start already 1.3Gb of RAM is used, and occasionally it would shutdown for no apparently reason. What packages can I uninstall to strip it down to a more stable, server-like, GUI-less environment? I don't need Unity etc. etc.
Alternatively, does anyone have experience installing ARM Ubuntu server on the Nexus 4?
I'm looking for broken N4 or N7 myself. I will connect it to tv as media center. Another thing is canonical has plans for ubuntu tv so nexus on big screen will look same good

[Q] Ubuntu Touch for X86 android phones

Hi all,
I was doing a bit of research to find any news about Ubuntu Touch on x86 platform. But i could not find much of info
So i start this thread for those who are interested to know (Includes me) about UBUNTU Touch on x86 Platform.
Below are the list of good phones with Intel Atom processors. As Ubuntu good with Intel Processors , it should be easy to post to x86 Phones.
Please post if you have any ROM here for Intel phones.
Asus Zenphone 5 & 6 are good & affordable phones to start with.
PS: This is my post. So apologise for the brevity & mistakes
In theory it should be possible to run Ubuntu on an x86 phone as there is also an x86 emulator. I don't know of any actual ROM though.
Thanks. And is there any active development happening on x86 Ubuntu phone ?
And I assume it would be easy to build one . as Ubuntu and x86 is going along for a while now
That would be my ideal phone that can act as a desktop when docked and a phone for the rest.

I don't think that any hardware manufacturer is currently working on an x86 phone. The two phones which will be released later this year will run on the armhf architecture.
Oh, and please note that as of now it does not covert into a desktop environment yet.

Love Ihis Idea!
Yes we need development in this area, yes there are a few x86 phones out there like the Intel AZ210 being the most advertised and some others the only complaint about x86 phones is they are the gas hog of the Mobile world but hopefully the Intel M micro processor can lead us into the age of X86 phones. and i would love for some one to port ubuntu touch to one of these devices, please please please!
May not be today but in an year or two Intel processor will be efficient (if not battery technology will improve) . so by then software should be ready to be in implemented.
To start with , does x86 Ubuntu touch build exist?
Where can I get them?
And what and all I need to port them to Asus Zenfone lineup?
And what is the status of the scalable UI? (UI that morphs into a desktop when docked)

I'm sorry to disappoint you but the UI does not converge (which is the expression they use for the scaling) yet. Currently, they are focusing on bringing the OS to a state which can be released to manufacturers (that's what they call their rtm milestone). According to Canonical and Meizu (one of the two manufacturers) we can see Ubuntu phones later this year, probably in December! During the next development cycle they will then start work on the desktop UI. The current desktop images which use Unity 8 only display the tablet UI.
What about the x86 Ubuntu touch images?
x86 is the 32 bit architecture, right? Images for an i386 emulator are already available out there. If you want to install it on your Ubuntu desktop, check out the Ubuntu wiki: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Touch/Emulator
