So I bought a brand new z2 tablet for £250, but the only downside is that its locked to t-mobile so bootloader is locked.
I want to root my device, and so far I found that to root lollipop you need to downgrade to 4.4.2 root using towelroot then udate via recovery with pre rooted rom. My only issue is that I am unable to find any instructions on how to install recovery without using the bootloader.
On my xperia Z I was able to install it through actuall phone, but for the tablet seems like the only way is through bootloader?
Can someone please help me out, perhaps im not looking in right place.

Hi,
I have a few questions regarding rooting my TF201 - Jelly Bean - 4.11 Tablet.
I have found that because I got the JellyBean I can't get access with NVFLASH to take a full memory dump, which is annoying and I probably don't want to downgrade my bootloader to gain that...
I have put off rooting and such because it was £500+ and I saw the article about it getting 4.3 so I could deal with the forced install stuff, but now it seems that was a fake, I want to put on a custom rom with 4.3 once it becomes stable.
I watched the video where you can unlock the device using ASUS' .APK file, I got the file but it says ICS ONLY (is this a lie? Can I use it on my device?)
I gained root by using the motochopper exploit and updated it to use Koush's SuperUser.
I was wanting to use TWRP but seen lots of things about bricking the device, I have had a locked bootloader in the past on my Nexus One and I could install a recovery image, is this the same with this device, or do I definitely need to unlock my tablet to install recovery and then install a custom rom.
Is there anything else I've missed? Is the ICS Downgrade worth the risk in order to get NVFLASH amongst others?
Can I install recovery with a locked bootloader?
Can I unlock my bootloader with the APK?

You can unlock the bootloader with the Asus APK. Ignore the ICS only note.
You must be unlocked to install a custom recovery.

Perfect, thanks for the response!
Keep in mind that you're in the same boat as I am. You received a tablet updated to JellyBean. No nvflash love for us. Be careful. You CAN still brick this tablet with a recovery. I managed to do it with my last one. Do not ever use goomanager with the prime. Ever.

Hold the phone, you can put a custom recovery on a TF201 after it has stock JB? I thought it always bricked it...

I have this PadFone S for over a week, and it's my 5th android device, but certainly the 1st one having a locked bootloader. So far I have read how to flash stock firmware, how to root and unroot, which requires unlocking bootloader first using CrowLock, how to install CWM and CM12 etc. I haven't try anything yet (still uprooted, and my bootloader is still unlocked).
One question still unanswered, is there any way to lock the bootloader after it's unlocked ? Perhaps by using the CrowLock app, or simply flashing stock firmware ? I need to be assured that any changes I do is reversible.
Thanks in advance
I too purchased the Padfone S and have the same question. Also, does anyone know if flashing crowlock will void the warranty of the phone? Can someone who has unlocked their bootloader using crowlock paste the output of "fastboot oem device-info"?
Does Asus' bootloader not check the signature for the recovery partition before booting from recovery? Given that everyone is flashing the recovery after rooting and running crowlock from the recovery, it seems so, but I'm not sure.
Anyone know if the bootloader's source code is available? I know it's based on the littlekernel, but I'm not sure which version it was built from.
Bump! I need the answer too.
Hey guys,
I own a stock Xperia Z3 Tablet LET (SGP621) and I have never upgraded it, still running stock 4.4.4.
I want to root it and only root (to Lolipop). I have read topics but there are so many and written in strange language for me I have no idea where to start.
I read I could just flash prerooted ROM without even touching my drm keys, right? But then I was not sure how could I do it.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks!
There is no method to root the tablet without unlocking the bootloader. The root exploit which most of the guys mentioning in these strangely written topics (giefroot, easy root tool, geohot, blablabla...) is useless now since Sony surely patched it. So to root, you have to unlock the bootloader. But wait, you would loose the DRM keys.
So, it means that you need to make a backup.
But, without root you can't backup.
But, how should you root if you don't have an unlocked bootloader??? And it goes on and on and on and on....
The "trick" is to flash a firmware from another device (not z3 tablet compact) that can be rooted via the exploit. But nobody wanta to use the "other" firmware to gain root. This "other" firmware is only used to gain root temporary so you can backup the drm keys.
Then you likely have to flash back the stock firmware (and root will be lost again).
Now that you backed up the drm keys, you are ready to unlock the bootloader and let the drm keys disappear for a while.
And then you still have to do some complex steps to achieve root on your stock firmware, then restore drm keys (bootloader locks up itself again...), blablabla
TL;DR forget rooting this device unless you are ready to do all these above steps. If you don't understand the steps and are new to rooting sony devices, I recommend you not to root and enjoy the stock firmware. Next thing is that lollipop will come and you could easily update without problems (via OTA). Until then, wait for some magicians/hackers/crackers find a new exploit which can root 2015 sony devices without unlocking the bootloader.
If you want to know if your device (firmware) can be rooted via exploit, try xdualrecovery. It contains the exploit root method. But if you are unsuccessful flashing xdualrecovery, that is because the exploit doesn't work and your firmware is patched.
Sadly, sony devices are nothing like nexus. And including this "afraid of loosing the drm keys", simply unlocking the bootloader might not be a pleasing thing to do.
just to add maybe we don't need to unlock bootloader to root our tablet
we temporarely flash z3 kitkat system to get a rootable core and we flash again z3 tablet compact system before reboot
or so I understood

I would advise not to answer questions about root without understanding the process and/or misguiding people asking for help.
The information you give above is wrong. You don't need to unlock your bootloader provided you downgrade to an explotable firmware.
The thread that details how to root your Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-...to-rooted-lollipop-locked-bootloader-t3083980
1. Obtain root by first flashing SGP621_23.0.1.A.0.167_CE.ftf and the system partition of D6603_23.0.A.2.93_Generic_20GLOBAL.ftf. Then use giefroot to root.
2. Prepare prerooted flashable zip of 23.1.A.0.690 NOBA on your internal storage or external SD.
3. Install XZDualRecovery and now you will have TWRP to install 23.1.A.0.690 NOBA on your SD card.
You may ask any doubts in that thread.

Well, the OP (junior member) mentioned "strange languages". So he/she might not understand all this complex steps. That's why I "let it be" to keep the things easy. If he/she understands these steps then it's good for him/she. But you're right, I lied. And thanks for the clarification and pointing out my wrong information.
Personally, I had every Xperia unlocked without backing up the DRM keys. I never had any disadvantage. I was, however, a little reluctant with the XT3C. That's because I use it as both my phone and tablet.
Still, did it now. No adverse effects. Root is SO much more important than the Bravia engine or whatever. And the camera isn't very good anyway so I don't miss the 'better' quality. It's bad either way
Hello all.
I need some help how to update the z2 to lollipop.
I've read stuff on internet, but I simply can not do it.
The error 2003 is killing me... And I do not know what to do.
A month ago I bought a z2 for my brother and it was/is on kitkat.
Today, I bought a z2 for my father and there was lollipop already installed.
I bought both phones via Ebay.
The phones have the same Model Number.
On the kitkat z2 I cant update via OTA either.
Could you PLEASE tell me what to do?
I have read something, that my bootloader may be unlocked and I have to relock it.
Is that true? And if yes, how can I check if my bootloader is locked?
Thanks in advance!
Use flashtool to flash a stock FTF image, this way you won`t have to bother with the bootloader, unlocked or not.
If the phone is rooted OTA updates won`t work., it will say it can`t verify. And it`s true that unlocking the bootloader will cause OTA updates to stop working.
Ok, so I rooted and installed a recovery.
My bootloader is locked and I'm curious what rom can use with it.
I've searched and have only been able to find ones that need the boot unlocked.
Thanks.
