I have a buddy here who has a T-Mobile S5 with latest TWRP + latest CM12.1 nightlies and 12.1 gapps running very stable. I also have the same phone with identical software packages.
He has Consumer Cellular prepaid service that goes through AT&T. I have a regular AT&T plan. His phone seems to spontaneously drop data connection (service bars with an x.) During this state, SMS and calls can still be sent/made but data does not work at all. In order to get data working again, he has to go search for service and choose AT&T in the results and it all comes back working normally until the next time it spontaneously drops data again.
I do not have this problem, never did from CM11, 12, and now 12.1. It works perfectly. Is this possibly a Consumer Cellular issue/poorly provisioned SIM card? His Consumer Cellular AT&T APN info looks to be exactly as it should be.
Thanks for any input.

Update: APN type had spaces instead of commas separating the values. So far, holding data connection well...
This may be some help for others that run into a similar issue.

Hello Folks,
Just bought myself a samsung galaxy S2 and swapped my AT&T SIM into the new phone. The phone seems to be working just fine but there is no internet connectivity through the 3G network. It doesn't even show that there is a 3G connection. I've tried to go into the settings and have played around but to no avail. Could someone please help or point me in the right direction? Would be a shame to spend 600$ for a phone that only works for voice calling and wifi.
Much appreciated
Harry
I'm having the same problem. Signed up for AT&T since the international version doesn't work with Simple Mobile, have a 2GB dataplan for smart phones and 400 minutes. A friends AT&T sim with an unlimited data plan works fine no problem. Went to the AT&T store and had them test the phone with one of their sim's and it worked... Have to go back to the store on Monday and try and get someone further up the chain to take a look at this.
If you have the Inter model, you will need a 4G data plan... apparently you can swap it. Make sure they set you up in their system under the 4G plan, the price remains the same.
Edit: Have them check your SIM card also, to be safe is compatible with the 4G network.
At Bell, it costs $5 to replace your SIM card. My old SIM worked out of the box with the new phone.
and verify your apn settings. They will vary depending what data plan you are on.
The APN settings are set as the default. WAP.cingular APN gets an unhighlited H+ for a second then it drops to 3G with no connection up or down then it drops off. I'm going to use the ADB log to get more info.
Raised a case with AT&T after verifying everything twice, the latest they'll get back to me is Wednesday.
Ok, so finally got Data working. The AT&T representative, when I first signed up in store, didn't put an IMEI of an AT&T phone in the system so regardless of whether or not I had the correct smart phone data plan, the system wouldn't allow me to properly connect to the data network. So after fussing about the SIM card at the store, the AT&T rep put in an IMEI of an AT&T 4G phone in and then it connected.
Although now that i've found out that H2O wireless has an unlimited $60 plan and is an MVNO that piggy backs on AT&T, i'm tempted to sign up with them. I just need to find out if they support HSPA+ and conditional call forwarding.
I as well has the problem with my S2 not getting a data connection. I did everything that I could think of, but just wasn't getting any connection.
My wife has a Atrix (motorola) and she has the HSPA+ and 3g, so I swapped the SIMs and then my phone was getting the same connection speeds.
I went to the AT&T store and they did give me a new sim (one that said is used for the 4g) , but still nothing.. I told the rep at the counter about me swapping my wife' sim and that happened and she looked at her phone, noticed some setting and basically did a copy and paste and now I got the same speeds.
So, if anyone has any light to shed on what might have been updated.. I sure would like to know.. just in case our account gets changed or updated...
I don't recommend the new unl H2O data plan b/c I had a bad experience with them, their data speed its just too slow. Its like the lowest 3G speed of like 180kbps down and lime 86kbps up.
Using at&t non-smartphone plan I get like 7.5Mbps down and 2Mbps up for $10/mo. (big, big difference), AT&T is the way to go on the GSII.

A little off subject, will the S2 get 4G? I get the HSPA+ , but the AT&T rep said that it would not get the AT&T 4g
hey guys,
i have this exact problem. I am on a family plan and my phone number has an unlimited $15/mo data plan. I have a sim card from 2002, and it works fine with my dumb phone.
My sony ericsson C905A shows an "H" symbol as well as 3g and i can get the internet/data on it. however, on my international galaxy s2 , all i get is edge and i have no indication of either 3g or H+.
how would i be able to switch to the "4g" plan? what would i need to do when i go to the AT&T store?
4G from AT&T is HSPA+ I'm on AT&T and after some account hiccups now have 4G

okay... I need to do a speed test, but there is that new 4LTE (or something like that) isn't that the 'true' 4G?
There's HSPA+, which gives "4G"-esque speeds. I've gotten as high as 7 Mbps on it on my EU version phone running KE7. Currently available SGS2's don't support LTE; Samsung has announced a LTE version, but it is, as far as I know, not available just yet.
My understanding is that the AT&T version, due out next weekend, will NOT be LTE-capable.
The LTE version has only just come out in Korea, my guess is the US market may see it on the Verizon network first.
Recently did the ICS upgrade, but realized ICS broke my phone shortly after.
I live in the mountains in an area where we use shared data with US Celluar (mountain in the way for the Verizon tower). So, I am always on roaming at my house. Drive a few miles out and I'm on Verizon tower but not at home.
After the update, my phone, texts and data do not work on the roaming US Cellular network but everything works fine on the Verizon network. What happens when I try to place a call is it will connect to the network, make the call but 4 second in (before any ringing or anything) I get the fast busy signal. Texts just fail as does data. I can receive calls and texts SOMETIMES. Other times the incoming call goes directly to my voicemail. I can test the phone and see a nice strong signal to the US Celluar network. I just can't seem to use it.
I reported the issue to Verizon on Monday (Saturday now), but they cannot figure it out. I've reset my phone to factory defaults with no luck. They say they have an open ticket without resolution.
So, I figure it's time to ask the community for any help.
Global data roaming access should be set to allow access for all trips
But I'm sure they suggested this.

Yeah, we messed with that
Dang - that sucks, hmmm, is you Preferred Network Mode "Global"?
In cases like this, I wish that Verizon had VOIP like TMO...
Another solution may be to turn in your phone as it may have gotten damaged some how... If you're still under warranty.
I wonder if the PRL version has anything to do with your problem.
I switched to T-Mobile from Verizon the other day, and the SIM worked fine at first, got LTE and everything after upgrading the radio. Now today, the service indicator is switching between "emergency calls only" and T-Mobile voice network every two seconds or so. I can make calls fine if I hit the dial button when it indicates service, and after hanging up, it will sometimes stick and register HSPA/LTE anywhere between a few minutes and a few hours. It will always eventually drop and restart the on/off cycle. Reboots will always cause it even if I just got it to "lock".
I started out using SlimKat 4.4.4, but I couldn't hang up a call. I then updated the ROM to a later version and that's when this problem began. I flashed back to the original ROM (wiped, etc.) and also installed CM11 nightly, all of which presented the same issue. I flashed the radio to 1 version prior to no avail.
I currently have it set to LTE/GSM (PRL auto) and the APN settings for fast.t-mobile.com are correct. I can make and receive calls, SMS, and data when the network is available.
Does anyone know what might be happening here?

I am running the T-mobile version of Dan's GE ROM and I get rock solid LTE pretty much everywhere.
First time I tried it I had that fluctuating deal...I was on global. I changed it once to LTE/GSM/WCDMA and it locked on to LTE. Now, it seems like it doesn't really matter. I think its still looking for Verizon bands. I had Liquid running OK for a while, too.
And make sure you are on RUIM/SIM...which you probably are if you have data at all.

Awesome! I set mine to "TD-SCDMA, GSM/WCDMA and LTE" and immediately locked onto T-Mobile and ramped up from Edge through H+. I'm sure I'll get LTE if I wait a bit. Thanks!
Edit: Had to go back into preferred network type and select LTE as it set itself to 3G.
Hello XDA!
I've been using my LS990 on a Sprint MVNO (Ting) for the last few months. Been running CM12.1 nightlies, very happy with the speed and stability and hardware support. There's just one wrinkle.
When I initially installed CM12, I had a strong LTE connection (I'm in the Boston area, which has lots of solid LTE coverage.) However, when I would drive out of LTE range, or travel elsewhere in the country, the phone wouldn't handover to 3G; it would just lose the data connection altogether. I'd still have a Sprint connection, and voice and SMS would still work, but no data: only the dreaded exclamation mark on the network icon.
A few weeks ago, I noticed that now I have a 3G connection ---- everywhere. Both in Boston and out in the country. I hadn't updated the nightly (though I have since, of course).
Sprint ZVB stock works fine. I'm using the ZV8 modem/rpm/tz, but I've tried ZV6, ZVB and ZVC as well.
I have tried: a carrier reset, reprovisioning the phone, updating my PRL, using DFS to change the RUIM mode from "NV" to "RUIM Preferred." I have tried various CM12.1 nightlies up to 6 months back, as well as less-frequently updated ROMs like XenonHD.
I've captured the radio log with ADB (happy to PM or pastebin it), and it looks like the phone is having trouble talking to the RUIM (can't get an IMSI); and in fact, if I pull the RUIM and restart the phone, I get exactly the same behavior.
The other odd thing is that I don't have any APNs: the APN selection screen says "settings are not available for this user."
At this point, I'm at a total loss. Any ideas?
I'm using the Nokia 7.1 in the USA with T-Mobile. Things had been working great until the OTA update to version 9 happened a few days ago.
Now, the phone is extremely picky about its cellular connection. I'll have almost full bars in my house, and then nothing as I walk around. At work, I had no service until I walked a half-mile to the T-Mobile store - then I had a good signal.
Experimenting with the basic mobile/wifi settings hasn't helped (enhanced 4G - LTE, Auto wifi connection, etc).
Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have a solution?
Thanks!
Not that I have experience. I have TMO as well and signal both indoors and outside seem normal. Granted, I got the phone and immediately updated to pie so I don't have a reference before updating to pie. Did you try a network reset to see if that corrects your issue?

Thanks for the suggestion! I tried it and tested today... It doesn't seem to have helped.

APN details....
Here are my APN details (sorry - I can't use http links yet).
My APN settings seem to differ from others that are using T-Mobile on 4G in the USA. But, I had no luck with setting things to match what I see here: support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-28990
imgur.com/a/ZsLfajQ
While I was capturing these, the signal went in and out. And, I'm within 30 feet of a 4G signal booster that I received today from T-Mobile.
I'll have to try resetting the phone and ignoring the Pie update if I can't get this fixed.

How old is your sim from TMobile? Maybe a new one might help.

It's a brand new SIM (picked it up when I got the phone). Also, the problem seems very reproducible (where I lose connectivity) so I don't think the SIM is loose or has a bad connection.
But, the phone refuses to join the TMobile network (and won't even roam). Oddly, I'll often see the 'emergency calls only' message.
Things seemed to be working fine with Oreo, and then got bad with Pie.
If I do a factory reset, I'll just get a clean Pie installation now (as I understand).
Is there a [easy] way to reset and downgrade to how it shipped?
