[Q] Screen lock timeout and force lock with button - Galaxy S6 Edge Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I would like to know if there is a way to force user authentication (password, or fingerprint, etc) by pressing a button.
What i mean is that on a blackberry you can press the 'K' key to lock the screen and force the user to have to put in the password to unlock the phone. With Android it seems like the only option is to set it to lock immediately b/c if it is set to anything other than that, hitting the power button will just turn off the screen but not Lock it until that setting reaches the time you set for the lock to occur.
I assume it is not built in and i will need to download an app.
Thanks

Uhh.. Set it to lock immediately?

That is not what I'm asking! I would like the ability to keep the screen off without it locking right away but have the ability to lock with the power button. There are apps out there but it does not appear there is an option to do this natively.

Oh... But why, I'm curious.

Very simple, i don't want to have to keep scanning my fingerprint when my phone is being charged on wireless charger after the screen times out. It is very convenient to lock the phone with a simple press of a button like blackberry. If you treat it like a business phone you will understand, but I'm coming from a blackberry so it is a very useful feature for me.

Enable the developer options by mashing the build number field in about device, then in dev options check the box to keep screen awake while charging.

That is not the issue. Plus why would I want the screen on all the time. The problem is that the feature exists. However for what ever reason ATT disabled the option and lumped it together with turn off screen immediately. If i can figure out which CSC will turn this on it would be great but I don't know if it is a CSC option

I gave you a solution based on what you said you wanted: " i don't want to have to keep scanning my fingerprint when my phone is being charged on wireless charger after the screen times out."
Im sorry if its not exactly what you were looking for, but it IS a solution.

I think the two things you want are mutually exclusive. The only way to have what you need is use smart unlock. Otherwise, the phone either locks or it doesn't.

I never stated I want the screen on all the time. I simply want the option to lock at will using the power button. I appreciate the suggestion but it is not what I asked for and I'm familiar with the development options.
Still would be nice if there is a way to turn this on via a CSC option. still digging

Not exactly, this feature exists, however it is disabled on ATT phones. Looking for a way to enable this via CSC but it may not be possible.

[Q] Android Lock Screen on Boot only?

Anyone who used to have a Windows Mobile phone will probably know what I'm talking about here:
I'd like my phone to boot up to the Android Lock screen:

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
But then only use the regular puzzle unlock screen after that.
Basically, if my phone is misplaced/stolen and is then consequently restarted for whatever reason, whoever has it is presented with the Android Lock screen and nothing else. But I don't want to go through the hassle of tracing my lock pattern every time the screen turns off, which is all I can seem to get it to do
So you want it to come up to the lock screen that needs a pattern or key before unlocking on boot, but have a lock screen with no pattern or key at other times? I think you get either one or the other, though I could be wrong about that.
Yeah, that's what I'm shooting for.
The purpose of the code lock screen is to protect your phone from malicious use after it being lost/stolen/etc.
The purpose of the puzzle/glass lock screen is merely to protect the user from accidentally using the phone in their pocket, butt dialing, etc.
Ironically, it was a standard feature on WinMo phones so I guess I just assumed it would be available with Android.
Alternatively, if I could just make the Android Lock Screen launch at boot, that would also do, but I can't seem to find a way to add it to startup...
Um, just FYI, when the pattern lock is enabled, it will always display the pattern entry screen at boot, so you shouldn't have to add it anywhere. Aside from that I don't think there's a way to do what you want, at least not without some kind of ugly hack, or maybe third party utility, but then again there could be some simple trick I'm not aware of.
No offense, but what you want honestly kind of defeats the purpose of having the lock screen, because if you lose the phone, whoever finds it will have full.access to everything, as long as it never gets restarted. I'm surpised that Windows Mobile lets you get away with that, as that makes for an almost useless security feature. I've gotten used to having to enter my pattern every time, but what I would really like is to use a PIN code instead, a feature that doesn't appear until we get Froyo. I had that on KaosFroyo on my Eris, and I miss it.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
there are many very practical uses for this feature
This is a good feature to have, it useful in cases such as when you're sleeping, that way if someone sneaks up to try to go through your phone they'll be greeted with the lock screen when it turns on. Or for me, we have a no phone policy at school, so in the even that it was taken from me i would like to be able to quickly shut it down thus locking it when they try to go through it later, which they always do, not much else goes on at my school so they got nothing better to do. i got to much stuff on there to have them snooping though it. I'd rather be able to just hand it over with it locked than have to refuse giving it to them and deal with all the crap that comes with that.
I need this feature too.

ROM with pocket detection?

My GS5 keeps waking up in my pocket...I'm assuming that it is because the home button is being pressed. Is there a ROM out there that has pocket detection so that it won't wake up if it's in your pocket?

I currently have alliance rom v2 installed.
This is located under settings, custom settings, lock screen mods.
Also, I believe wanam x posed can do it, I'm not sure though.
Get this from Google Play.

Thanks...just installed...so far, so good!
So I installed that ROM, and Faux123's kernel, and it appears to be working great. I wish there was true pocket detection so I didn't have to disable the home button wake, but this will work for now.
Some lock screen apps e.g. Dynamic notifications pro can be configured to do what you want. They monitor the proximity sensor to know when you pull the phone out of your pocket.

The problem with that tho is it polls the sensor, which drains battery. The air wake feature of our device checks the orientation of the device. I would like to change it so it works on all orientations so when removed from pocket it would wake. That would be the perfect setup.

You quoted multiple people who had disparate solutions. Speaking only for myself, I was talking about a lock screen app, not a ROM. And it can be configured to do what you are wishing for. Block accidental use of the home button when locked. Realize when it is pulled from a pocket and wake up.
And it satisfies your newly expressed requirement as well; namely that it is not harsh on battery life. If you search my post history, I even quantified the battery use for that app.

Its still using more battery then the system framework can. Therefore its harsh on the battery for people who wish to get 18+ hours on battery. I make apps. I know how to read proximity sensor values. and you need to keep the device awake in order to do it. Maybe using root it would be different.
Anyhow, i was nowhere bashing any app. I was simply stating that instead of replacing your entire lockscreen, you could hack into the already existing code and make it ignore the orientation of the device to achieve what the OP is after.
Nothing you said refutes my comments or their conclusion. So we'll just have to disagree on the subject.

[APP][ALPHA][MATERIAL][Oct27] SmartLockScreen for Android

[size=+3]SmartLockScreen for Android - Bringing Lollipop smartness to JB and above![/size]
Code:
Disclaimer:
This app is in alpha stage. Though safe for daily use (none of the testers have got locked out of their phones),
rooted phone is recommended for testing, so that system password can be reset via adb.
If the previous sentence scares you, do read on, and if you find it interesting,
follow this thread and try out the app when it reaches Beta stage
(It'll not take much time).
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[size=+1]Looking for alpha testers. Feedback will be much appreciated![/size]
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
[size=+2]Introduction[/size]
Make your phone lock smarter! Automatically change and remove passwords based on your current 'Environment'.
Convert Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth Devices or Location areas into trust agents, and let them do the phone unlocking for you!
That is just 1 method of using the app. Possibilities are endless!
Also brings Lollipop style lockscreen notifications.
[size=+2]Features[/size]
Define environments - Each environment can be a combination of any of Bluetooth devices, Wi-Fi network and Location.
Set passphrase for each environment. The app detects environment changes and changes the passphrase automatically in the background.
How is this useful? Consider this: Say you define environment home, which says Home is when the phone is connected to Home Wi-Fi (you can use location also, or both together). For environment home, set password as none. And for unknown environment, you can set, say, a pattern lock. So whenever you are at home, you can unlock the phone easily, but when outside, it'll set a lock and prevent unauthorized usage by others.
Another scenario is adding an environment which checks for your bluetooth headset. Phone is automatically secured when you move away, and unlocks automatically when you come back to it.
These are just indicative. Possibilities are endless!
Notifications in lock screen - Lollipop style! It's not totally there yet, it's an ongoing work. Swipe up/down to unlock, left for camera, right for dialer.
Intelligent environment overlap resolution. But you always have the option to override it manually.
Material Design, and smooth animations. (See screenshots below)
More features are coming soon! See Features to be implemented section

Great app but unfortunately I only use fingerprint lockscreen on my N4. Waiting for an update with support of fingerprint lockscreen!
EDIT: It seems like I can't uninstall this app. Not even force close it, since there's no exit option in the app itself. What is that all about?

I suppose with a finger print lock, this app is not really required. However, I've never actually tried the finger print unlock. If it takes a bit of time to unlock, or is inconsistent sometimes, I'd definitely try and include finger print unlock once the app reaches a stable state.

I don't need to unlock my phone at home, but as soon as I leave my wifi I would like to use my fingers. Will keep an eye on this, thanks.

[Q] Power button instant lock - how to turn off?

Hi, got HAM2. Very impressed. Wish it had Qi, but aside really good.
Q: How do I turn off power button instant lock?
Android always has this option, but for some reason I can't find it in settings!
In my MT2-L05 EMUI3.0 it's in Settings/Security/Power button instantly locks.

Ya... and I'm having a hard time finding a module. any help would be appreciated
My HAM2 doesn't have this problem. I have the Delayed Lock app from the play store which modifies the locking though. I've also frozen the hwunlock lock screen since it was interfering.

Happy to hear. Also if you want to clean up the notification, the Delayed Lock app can still run if you hide it's notification (long press on it then uncheck show notifications), it still works fine and the Notification bar is clean. Mine is set to auto lock after about 20 mins from when I turn off my screen and I also created a shortcut on my home screen to instantly lock it and turn off the screen (have to set wake to lock mode in the settings of the app). If you want to a shortcut like that you can do this in Nova Launcher (or something similar in other launchers). Long press and empty space on the homescreen. Choose shortcuts then delayed lock shortcuts then Lock now (which also turns off the screen).

How to remove slide to unlock?

You need to turn on developer option. You can then turn off screen lock there. Go to system, about phone then hit "build number" a few time to turn on developer option.
i did (I have the same phone) and now i am developer. Still no NONE option for unlocking (there is a NONE option for password).
In unlock options there is only slide to unlock and i can't disable that. (︺︹︺)

You need to go to developer then you should see an option for Screen lock to turn it off.
I too have now enabled developer, and do not see any new option to disable the swipe-to-unlock?

Okay I think I had a different problem from the original guy. I did developer and found that option, but it was grayed-out. Then it came back (perhaps when I completed that system update?) and I turned it off. I had screen lock turned to none as I had from the beginning, but there was still something called "Victory" with "magazine unlock" that I couldn't deselect, which made me still have to swipe to unlock the phone.
Now I've just done all the steps over again to check before I posted again, and it has worked.
I swear swear swear it didn't before and I'm not crazy! Tried it like 3 times! D:
Well so, I'm fixed. Dunno about that other fellow.
(Though really wish we could still have the option to unlock with fingerprint without having to set all the security, just for sometimes quick access. And why the hell can't I use my fingerprint to unlock my bank app without having to have my device lock? It's two different things, let me have them! "Oh no you can't use your finger to unlock this app unless you use it for the whole device!" Why! Let me do what I want! Last phone wouldn't either, lame.)
Now can anyone solve the problem that the device uses ONE notification sound for everything, and that my damn email app can't override so I get different sounds for each account! May start a new thread I dunno...
Thanks for the help though with the swipe guys! ^×^
