Yesterday I traded for an AT&T m8. The person failed to tell me that the phone was rooted and a custom ROM was installed, I found this out while I was in the ATT store getting a SIM for it and I seen TWRP flash across the screen when the sales rep rebooted it.
Voice calls work and texts are fine, I haven't tried an MMS but I'm assuming it won't work. As for my data, it shows the bars on the top and they even change to reflect signal strength, but there is no AT&T symbol and there is no mobile connection.
I snapped some screen shots of the ROM and any other info I thought might be of help. I've tried a few AT&T APNs that I looked up and none seem to change anything. A factory reset results in the (seemingly) correct APNs for AT&T .
Any help would be much appreciated, and I'm sorry if this topic has been covered before (I'm sure it has). I searched for a couple hours last night and couldn't find a solution. The phone appears to be rooted with s-off.

What radio baseband, and what are the APN settings you have tried?
How do I check what radio is on it? Ive tried 1 or 2 APNs it doesn't seem like an APN issue.. it could be the radio.

Apn type: default,mms,supl,hipri,fota
Apn protocal: ipv4
Apn roaming: ipv4

Also I downloaded one of the AT&T radios and tried installing it through TWRP but it just spit back an error message. It was a .img file
I just used a cid finding app and apparently the phone has a T-Mobile cid right now, not sure if that makes a difference or not
I updated the cid to supercid and no longer T-Mobile. Here's a screen shot of some recovery info and the radio .. not sure if its AT&T or not.
Any help would be very much appreciated, having no data sucks outside of home (
Any time I click mobile data on from the notifications tray it automatically says "disconnected because service is unavailable" by default underneath.

What I have is slightly different, and what I have matches what is listed here: http://www.att.com/esupport/article.jsp?sid=KB424489&cv=820
Although I'm not sure if this is the problem, and I'll get to that in a bit . . .

The radio .img files are flashed in adb. It has to be a flashable zip to flash in recovery.

CID is just a check that HTC uses when installing official software updates, etc.
CID does not affect service with your carrier.

Your radio number corresponds to Android 4.4.4 (KitKat) firmware. Incompatibility between the KitKat radio and the current Lollipop ROM may be the cause for no data.
My recommendation would be to run the Lollipop AT&T RUU, which will put you on all AT&T software, including the stock AT&T ROM, radio, and all other partitions. Its a complete stock software image. So if software is at all the reason for your data problem, the RUU should solve it. Instruction and download for the RUU are listed near the bottom of the following webpage (PC required): http://www.htc.com/us/support/htc-one-m8-att/news/
No need to relock the bootloader to run RUU, since your phone is s-off.
However, the MID needs to match for the AT&T model in order to run this RUU. Since the CID was changed to T-Mobile, I suspect the MID may also have been changed. Best was to check is adb command: adb getvar all
If you post the getvar output, be sure to delete the IMEI and serial number. These are personal info, and should never be posted online.
SuperCID will be okay to run the RUU. So no need to change that.
Also bear in mind that the RUU will wipe user data, so back anything you want to keep.
---------- Post added at 09:35 AM ---------- Previous post was at 09:29 AM ----------
Also, are you sure the phone is originally the AT&T version? If it is, it would have the AT&T "globe" logo on the back. I believe the phone is either an AT&T model that the previous user tried to "convert" to T-Mobile and did a botched (incomplete) job as the radio is AT&T; or else its a T-Mobile version that was converted for use on AT&T's network.
The T-Mob version does not have any carrier branding on the back.
Also, when you do adb getvar all the product name will also help determine what "original" version the phone was.
Here is the getvar. I may try the RUU as long as you guys say it'll be gtg. Thanks for the help so far redpoint.
Also, the phone is AT&T branded on the back
Update: I tried installing the ATT radio from this thread using the oemRUU adb method. It seemed to have installed fine, data still broken though.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2736921
I researched and seen that the firmware was for kitkat and updated it to the lollipop firmware. Now under mobile data instead of saying "disconnected because service is unavailable" it just says disconnected. I'm not sure if it's an improvement or not because I still have no data .
Redpoint, I went ahead and ran the stock AT&T Lollipop RUU like you suggested. Unfortunately, still no mobile data. At this point I'm not sure what else I can try..

All the radios listed on that thread are quite obsolete (correspond to Android 4.4.2).
This was not what I suggested, and more likely to cause more issues than otherwise. Although since you've now updated to more current radio firmware, there is not actual harm done aside from time needlessly wasted.

Since you are not back to "full stock" (an the most updated version, at that) which also should include the default APN, I'm tending toward an issue on AT&T's side. Its possible the account was not properly provisioned for data when they gave you the SIM.
I'd suggest going back to the AT&T store and ask for help checking your account, if that is feasible. Otherwise, call AT&T customer service.
The other possibility is a hardware issue. While possible, its the less likely scenario, I'd say.
I went to the AT&T store yesterday and the lady there tried a different SIM, and other solutions but couldn't figure it out. I'm gonna go to the ATT service center in my area tomorrow and see what they can do to fix it or swap it out.
I went to the service center and the lady got me all straightened out. The APN was still wrong after putting the stock software on it. I knew it looked funny but didn't think it was wrong because like you said it was stock software. Now convince me not to reroot and put that ROM with sense 7 back on
Here's the screwed up APN that came with the stock RUU

That's exactly what I have, which works fine. At least in my location.
My understanding "nxtgenphone" is for Voice Over LTE (which this device supports, AT&T calls it "HD Voice") so maybe your area doesn't have HD Voice yet; or there is some other issue related to this deployment that is screwing up data connection for this APN. Just guessing a bit here.

Now why would I do that?
Actually, some folks are having issues with "international" based ROMs on AT&T's network. Actually, the opposite of the problem you just fixed (no voice calls or text) and again probably related to HD Voice. Not everyone has this issue (I've been fine on Skydragon Sense 7). But at a minimum, I'd recommend making a nandroid backup of your current working setup, in case the ROM causes such issues.
Guess I spoke too soon. I just happened to check the data speed with the speed test app and I'm barely breaking 3mbps. I didn't even notice that there was no LTE symbol under the 4g icon until after that.
If I go into the phone settings using *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer WCDMA is preferred and I cannot change it.
I guess back to the service center again :/

What is the current APN?
Definitely something screwy going on. Either something wrong with LTE in your area, something not provisioned right on your account (LTE not enabled?) or bad APN (not that likely, since you already tried different APNs to begin with).
LTE is fine in our area my girlfriend's note 3 is getting 25+mbps. I'm gonna try to make it to a regular ATT store and have them look at it because I can't get to the service center today. My apn:

Well I have a Samsung Note on Straight talk and I am only getting EDGE network its a AT&T Sims for Straight talk not the tmobile. My wife has a LG Thrill and its running Straight talk and always has H+ 3 to 4 bars all day. I took the Sims card out of the Samsung note and put it in the LG Thrill and got H+ with no problems. I did drive around town and got 4g anywhere from 2-4 bars but when I got home it went back to EDGE!! I notice in some areas was on EDGE when it should been on H+. I have tried different apns and get the same results. Is there any service code I should be looking at??? If so how do I do that? Where else should I be looking?? Thanks Bud-sc
Straight Talk uses AT&T network so you should get 3G. I also read about a fix to get 4G I'd you're in a 4G area.
But you said you tried several APN's and nothing improved. What modem are you using (settings>about phone>base and)?

Packet Data checked.
You probably used more than 2GB of data in a month or used more than 100MB/day. Your probably being throttled by ST. Might give them a call and if my assumption is correct, act innocent.
Good point. Even the $45 unlimited plan gets throttled at 2 gigs. But it sounds like he never got 3/4G yet.

That looks like the stock modem. Did you root? I'm guessing yes because you said you changed your APN.
If I were you I would flash the UCLE5 modem from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=27863509
Why? It sounds like a reception or antenna problem. So changing modems could improve your reception.
But you need CWM recovery installed to do that.
No the phone is not rooted.I just only change the apn that Straight talk give me then after that I tried a few other apn settings to see if I get different results but no luck yet.I am not going to give up yet but this phone is suppose to get ics this July so maybe then the new fireware might make things better. I hope so. Thanks Bud-sc
Is your phone the at&t or international version? Did you unlock the phone to put in the ST sim card?
ICS is out now. The modem I suggest is the current ics modem.

That's your problem right there sir. Thats a Tmobile Baseband. All you need to do is dial *#2263# and select GSM Bands then select all...and bam you should have 4G or H+ in no time.
another solution is to flash any AT&T Baseband/Radio. But that would require flashing CWM thru ODIN. But no root required for that.
Its the att and yes its unlocked. I checked the update last night nothing yet. Is there away to check the update with out the time limit?? Is there a stock firmware on Samsung web site for At&t??? Thanks Budsc

dude did you see my reply? The T989 Baseband is specific to the Tmobile's Galaxy S2.
And the stock AT&T Radio can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1506212
Just flash thru ODIN.
If your phone has at&t logo but has a T-Mobile modem (as the baseband suggests) someone has already flashed a different modem.
Do you know about CWM or Odin? In other words, what is your skill level for solving this problem?
My skill on something like this little afraid too be truthful. Thanks Bud-sc
OK what do I need to download to my computer and how do I do this??MY phone does not or does it need to be rooted???
try disabling mobile data?
Does your phone have the AT&T logo at the top?
You don't need root access to flash a modem.
Are you chatting with me from your phone or a PC? Why? Because you will have to perform the next steps from a PC.

First things of, download drivers for your phone. Enable USB debugging in settings. Then download latest ODIN (i believe its v1.85 or something), then download the http://m-s-j.net/dagnarf/phone-odin-att-stock-radio.tar.

I thought it was funny. He's loving the phone so far! Does anyone else have this dev edition?
Semi-related: We're on AT&T and have a shared data plan, and tethering is allowed by AT&T. Is there a hidden hack he can do to enable it? The phone will not allow it right now, and AT&T can't help him out because they don't 'have' the phone.
Yep, same here - got mine at Build.
But I'm on Sprint so I can't just move my sim over.
It may live out it's life on just WiFi.
it's a slick phone, that'd be very sad to hear.
I was at build also. I spent 2 hours with AT&T techs yesterday, and could not successfully get internet sharing working.
I'm getting a feeling that the firmware on the build phone isnt final, and we may have to wait for a firmware udpate.
To get internet sharing to at least load without saying call at&t or that it wasn't supported, I had to configure a new apn named "broadband". None of the pre-configured apn settings work for tethering.
But once I did that, I can connect to the hotspot, but the phone does not want to route any data through it. So devices connect, but cannot connect to the internet. Its quite odd, and the AT&T techs were stumped.
It probably lacked AT&T's specific module for tethering. You may need to 'upgrade' to AT&T official ROM.
Broadband APN is tied to your account. When you are eligible to use tethering, it get enabled. So, I'd double check the account setting on AT&T side.
On Android phones, I know tethering is secretly routed through a hidden broadband APN built inside ROM's SQLite config database while normal phone connection is routed throuh ptr APN (for LTE). With a rooted Android phone, you can change the hidden APN back to ptr and get around the tethering account requirement.

All LTE phones require a SIM card. But for Sprint and Verizon, currently they run phone calls and SMS on CMDA side and data on LTE side. So the SIM card for Sprint and Verizon are in fact data only. Verizon is actively testing Voice over LTE and promised to deploy them in near future. When that happens, CDMA will no longer be used. Everything will be over LTE. But that is long way to go.
On the other hand, this phone actually works with T-mobile 3/4 G as well (it is penta-band unlike the AT&T retail version). So, you can as well get a prepaid account for T-mobile. There is no Sprint WP8 phone come out anytime soon.
Just out of curiosity, when you start the phone up, do you have a carrier splash screen?

I've got a Lumia 900 on the account, and tethering is enabled, and that works fine. if I'm not using the broadband APN, it actually tells me I have to call at&t or go to the AT&T web site (giving me the exact url) to add the service to my account. So I'm not sure why it actually doesn't work on the 920.
Hopefully someone will figure it out at some point.

No, it is a dev phone not specifically designed for AT&T. You can't even get cell data connection before you make a manual selection of APN for AT&T.

That is because your Lumia 900 is an AT&T branded phone. This one is not. And AT&T has special requirement/software for handling tethering. If I would make a guess, AT&T uses Broadband APN to test if you qualify for tethering but use ptr (for LTE) for actual data transmission once verification passed. You actually have to have a USB broadband stick on your account to use Broadband APN for data transferring.

I suspect that is true because when I first powered it up, it defaults to Canada region settings and time zones.
Anyway, I played with different manual APN settings. It seems that the phone firmware is hardcoded not to allow tether for both PTA APN (for LTE) and Phone APN (for HSPA+). Any other APN will be ok but my phone with my current account settings (unlimited data) won't let me use either AT&T 3G APN (wap.cingular) or anything else for internet connection. So the end result is the same.

Did your phone go through a few reboots to apply the update? Which APN is your phone configured to use? This Dev phone comes with 3 preconfigured APN for AT&T:
* AT&T LTE1

Only AT&T LTE2 will fully function for this phone.

I seriously doubt it. They need carrier's approval to sell anyphone with carrier's LTE support. Take a look at Google's new Nexus 4 dev phone, it contains no LTE what so ever. The last gen Galaxy Nexus with LTE is a Verizon branded phone and can only be purchased via Verizon.
Installing either version of the spanish keyboard did not allow tethering. My APN settings just say "AT&T" . The difference is my phone was from AT&T so it probably has some other lock on tethering. More details on how this was done would be helpful unless it just isn't possible for me. I was already prepared for not having tethering with my unlimited plan anymore with my lumia 920 (came from android where custom roms allowed for tethering) so here's to hoping it is possible at some point.

I have been logging on the D4 with VZW SIM installed on a 32 bit XP box and I am not certain why I am seeing different things now but it maybe because they switched on LTE finally here.

I have not yet located the exact location of that list but I feel that now that I am certain what I am searching for that I can find it and edit the list.
This is very exciting news indeed!

Well, interestingly enough, tonight I found the mechanism for the lock.
I have been logging on the D4 with VZW SIM installed on a 32 bit XP box and I am not certain why I am seeing different things now but it maybe because they switched on LTE finally here.
In any event, the bottom line is that I found the messages in the logs referencing the Forbidden PLMN List with 4 entries.
MCC MNC
310 410
310 260
000 00
000 000

NICE work! You got me all excited and giddy now. I know we're not there yet, but damn we're close
How did you pull the log? What state was the phone in?

I know I generally read logs with logcat in adb shell (with adb debugging enabled)
to read the radio log
# logcat -b radio
These are the logs generated by QXDM and are not on the phone at all. You cant see the diagnostic interfaces from the radio in those logs, just the RIL.
They are .isf files (Item Store Files) and are generated by QXDM Logging View(F1) and saved by default in the Program Files/QXDM/Bin directory.
You setup which message types are monitored in Logging View Config(F5).
If, like me in most cases, you don't know what you are looking for then you set a very broad set of message types and the logs are extremely large and verbose.
The one I generated last night for about 2 hours of logging is 225MB.
These files can be opened and "replayed" with the Item View(F11)function so you can search them and parse the messages, events and strings or raw item hex data in a split pane view.
It is definitely a huge step to have found the specific mechanism, but still does not necessarily mean there is a boolean switch as has been found before for other models. It may mean that the Forbidden PLMN list and Preferred PLMN list or acquisition databases need to be edited directly.
The phone is connected to the QC Diagnostic Port and not the QC BP Modem as it is for AT mode.
I crashed at 6:00 AM and need to go back and re examine the logs for more info.
There are many NV items that refer to the PLMN(Public Land Mobile Network) in various forms and the items referenced by igwtapc are non existent AFAIK.
I believe he maybe misreading the item IDs because they are expressed in Little Endian (Least Significant Byte First) format in the raw item hex output from QXDM.
In any event, there is a lot to look at now to find the specific means of undoing the block.
EDIT: added screenshots of logs
EDIT 2: I found the same sequence in the Bionic logs and it also checks the Forbidden PLMN List with 4 items but all the items are 000- 00 so it doesn't block anything!
So it seems clear that editing the Forbidden PLMN List should work as desired assuming we can locate it in the NVM.
Edit 3: I have found several items labeled Acquisition List 1, 2,3 and 4 that contain PLMN designations for various bands and have the ATT MCC/MNC pairs in them.
I have not yet found an item that contains values structured like I am anticipating for this list of 4 items.
These items also contain entry codes for each entry and I am not certain how they need to be properly edited even if they are the right items.
Learning lots from moment to moment here though and I wanted to let you in on some of the progress!
Edit 4: I found the item that controls the forbidden PLMN list and sets all values to 000- 00 for the 4 entries like the Bionic, but it was not enough by itself and it still gets flagged as invalid country code despite being able to successfully pass the NAS REG sequence with the cleared PLMN list.
The item is 6844 first byte changed to 00 from default 02 zeros the entries in the forbidden PLMN list.
I won't have much time to work on this further for a couple days but we are definitely closing in on this now!

Thanks for starting the new thread!
A few things I've found
NV #853 (NV_EQUIVALENT_PLMN_LIST_I)
13001400FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF000000x0 (with AT&T Sim)
13006200FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF000000x0 (with T-Mo Sim)
notice the reference to 0x13 0x0 0x14 (310 410) and 0x13 0x0 0x62 (310 260)
But even zeroing out the values upon reboot goes back to F(x30)
The most consistant I seem to find the logical references (from an illogical approach lol) to the above mentioned are in the items below
I've listed next to each item what is referenced within the string of madness)

I am using a NON VZW sim and using it outside of the US.
I live in a border town with the US and pick up signals from both the US and my country (Mexico). I also travel to the us frequently (2-4 times a week .
I have another 2 phones that are not XT912 and can scan , pick up and connect to either T-Mo or ATT from my current location....if that is of any use.
If this is useful in any way, please let me know. But please, if its something to technical, please provide steps and or details.
Cheers!!

I have heard of cases where the network actually grabs onto legitimate US AT&T for a short period while roaming when close to the border. If your XT912 happens to catch a US ATT or TMo tower I'd love to get a NV Dump for Comparison. I'll send you a PM in a bit with what's required and step by step. Gotta wrap up a report for school really quick.
Thank you

so again im attempting to put in my 1 cent in the equation in attempt to help lol. so i just happened to talk to the right person the right way at verizon corporate yesterday and i got some interesting findings.
i told them that i was a previous verizon customer with a droid razr xt912 and that i paid good money for the device and that i plan to use it as i please. however verizon was preventing me from doing so with the block. read them the article that explained why they were obligated to unlock the phone. shortly after i finally got some cooperation from verizon. they agreed to unlock the phone as long as my previous account wasnt left with an outstanding balance. i used a friend of mines verizon account that was in good standing as "the account that i was on" and the put me on line with a tech to guide me through unlocking the device. here's where things got hairy again. the tech said that in order for them to unlock device it had to be connected and in service with verizon. so i would need to activate the phone on a plan of some sort temporarily in order to proceed. that would cost $15 for the service connection fee, the cost of the lowest rate plan that a smartphone could be activated on (whatever that is), and if i chose to cancel the account after they would be obligated to charged the fee for breaking contract. so we're talking around $250.00 all together to get verizon to unlock the device if its not already activated and in service on an account in good standing. at that point i couldnt proceed any further. however i thought that this info would be valuable because if any of us were to actually follow through and get the phone unlocked by them then i can only imagine we could use that unlocked device as a template to replicate the results on other devices.
further more i can say that i am extremely excited about the recent progress and i thank everyone that has been working on making this happen.

Im thinking that they are thinking you are talking about SIM unlock, We are talking about a BOOTLOADER unlock, SIM unlocking is free if you go in the store and the phone has service, contract or no contract, it just allows you to roam internationally. But the feature was already activated with the ICS update for all non us GSM carriers.
Actually, this thread isn't about boot loader unlock or Sim unlock per say. It's about getting these devices to work on domestic GSM.

It would be most beneficial if the device were connected to att or Tmobile. Or perhaps through qxdm and seeing what happens when the handshake with the network is allowed.

Hey Everyone,
I've been trying to use my T-Mobile SIM in my Verizon Note 2 with little success. I am using last nights Cyanogenmod nightly. The build does not have an APN menu, but I overwrote the existing one with this one: htt ps://gist.github.c om/429 0254 (Should work right?).
I am able to make and receive calls, and receive texts. I am unable to make texts and connect to any data network. On the About Phone -> Status page, this is what I am given:
Network: T-Mobile
Signal Strength: -120 dBm 99asu
Mobile network type: HSDPA:8
Service State: in service
Mobile network state: Disconnected
My phone number: unknown
MIN: unknown
I just activated my T-Mobile sim 2 days ago, but was informed it should be working. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
ok try this
Firstly you ust be rooted Buy paid version of titainium backup go to market and download global APN and APN manager then go back to titainium backup and touch the APN man. And when it pops up slide finger from right to left and there will be options to convert to system app touch that one ..but nothing else then find global APN and do the same to it then go open the global APN (it will have an android picture maybe dontbworry if bit don't ) after you open it it will ask you too select your country do that then add apns should give you a choice of 5 I think check them all and save it then...Google for T-Mobile apn s and write them down on paper and go to APN manager go to add APN and add them one by one and it will give you the option to swap apns so set it up then when its ready to swap turn of phone and insert sim turn on and go to APN man. And hit swap and the Tmobil apns you added should take effect ... If that Dont work since you added global apns go to settings and approved networks and you should see the apns if not hit menu and choose add APN and then put in the ones you wrote down and reboot and that should do it if not on YouTube search zedomax .. And the video is how to make galaxy note 2a global phone try one of these three things and between the three one should work ..but its iffy if you get 3g2g or edge all could get was edge so try it out and post back to me and I'm not responsablebfor damage although there shouldbnotnbe any ..hope this can help you out bro :good:

Thanks for the help! Any time I use an APN app I get an error that says " Unfortunately, Global APN has stopped" Or "Unfortunately, APN Manager Pro has stopped"
Have you looked at the APN thread in development? You should only need to put the new APN data into /system/etc/apns-conf.xml. It is possible that you won't get good data speeds though, as the VZW Note 2 doesn't support T-Mobile's main frequencies.

I also have flashed the APN zip that allows you to manually add APN's. If you know a T-Mo APN, you could try adding it that way as well.
Please post your results, I'm very interested in finding out how this goes for you. :good:

Thanks for all the help guys. I had encrypted my device to get on my work email and it turns out that it was screwing some things up. I flashed back to stock firmware, installed the apn manager and added the correct tmobile apn. Everything seems to work now. I'm on Edge network now, but for a brief moment I was put on a HSDPA and had 3g. Not sure why I can't get back on it. Running stock firmware right now, not sure if it makes a difference or not.

Thanks,
I had to flash back to stock because of an issue I was having with encryption turned on. It wouldn't let me add any apns. I used your apn xml file on the stock firmware and it seems to work great. Although your samsung application to remove the annoying non-verizon SIM is not working. I moved it to the /systems/apps folder and overwrote the existing apk. Was there anything else I had to do?
I'm getting 2g speeds. I was on a HSDPA network at one point and got good speeds, but I can't seem to get back on it. Should my Network mode be Global or GSM/UMTS?
EDIT: I'm on HSDPA:9 now. I was on HSPAP:15 for a second. Most of the time, I'm on EDGE:2

Everything seems to be working great now. I don't believe I have very good coverage of the 3G/4G on the 1900mhz band yet because I seem to always be on the edge network (Albany, NY). T-Mobile is expanding the band though around the nation so it can support iphones. I am hopeful that it will be in my area soon. Here is a map of where the 1900mhz band has been spotted: htt p://ww w.airportal.de/ (down today for some reason).
I really didn't do anything that wasn't already posted in the forums. A t-mobile SIM card should work after the bootloader has been unlocked (jailbroken) and the APN has been added (Using stock ROM). The t-mobile version of the note 2 will probably get better speeds because it supports the 1700mhz and 1900mhz bands while the Verizon version only supports 1900, but supports every other band on tmobiles network. It is also my understanding the tmobile will have 1900mhz coverage in every place that has 1700mhz coverage. I could be wrong though.

Is there any reason in particular that you're using the stock SCH-I605 ROM? I'm curious if this would work for CleanROM....
Also, a few other quick questions:
1. Which method did you use to add APNs? (Flash the zip file? .xml?)
2. Where did you get the T-Mo SIM and how did you get it "activated" ?
Thanks! :highfive:

I never really gave the stock firm a chance before. I wanted to try it out before going with Cyanogenmod. I like the samsung tools (multi-window, s-note) and everything is running smooth right now. I will probably flash to cyanogenmod later though. I'm pretty sure it will work on other roms. Not sure why it wouldn't. I think my issue before was that I had the device encrypted and it wouldn't take my changed apn.
1. I manually overwrote the APN file in /system/etc/. I found that it was the easiest method. The flashable apn setting did not work for me until I added this apn file.
2. T-Mobile is running a special on their activation kit right now. You can get a free micro sim delivered to your door. After that, you can just activate everything online.

No you do not. You become a customer of course when you activate it. Here is the link to get them:
http://prepaid-phones.t-mobile.com/prepaid-phones/prepaid-sim-cards
Here is the APN file I used: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35369426&postcount=3
After you overwrite the existing APN file and restart your phone, you can use this flashable mod: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=35368049&postcount=2 and it will display your APN information in Settings -> More Settings -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names or you can use APN Manager Pro (I had issues with APN Global) to select the T-Mobile US APN.

So are you still on a contract with Verizon and are trying out T-mobile for giggles?
What type of "customer" account did you get upon activation and what is it running you?
Btw, much props and thanks awarded for all of the info you've provided thus far!!

I'm actually trying out both t-mobile and the phone. I got tired of paying for Verizon so I transfered my number to tmobile (which was free). My brother bought the note 2, but he's currently using his old phone and I'm trying out his new one. I will probably buy myself one, but I'm not sure if I would get the tmobile one or the Verizon one.
I got the $30 a month unlimited data and text. It only includes 100 minutes talk. I don't use minutes too much, but if I was in danger of going over, I could always use the app sipdroid which will make calls using my google voice number over my data connection.
No problem. This forum has been a tremendous help to me so I will provide any information I can in return.
Has anyone had any luck getting anything other than Edge on tmobile? I was using my Verizon N2 on Net10 with an at&t micro sim. It worked great and I stayed connected to the hspa network. I live in Memphis and had tmobile in the past so I know coverage is no issue here. So I decided to try it out thinking I'd still get decent speeds. No luck. I think I've just wasted $60. I've tried several different apns. Called tmobile tech support and still nothing. Even tmobile told me I should have better than edge but nothing they could do either. I've tried beans and clean rom. I previously had a DNA using it with the net10/att but I had to use a certain rom or it just wouldn't work. I know it has capabilities to run on a faster tmobile frequency right or did I misread that somewhere? Is there something else I need to do to unlock that capability? I'm rooted/unlocked and running beans. I didn't want to start a new thread asking so hopefully someone sees this and can help. If I'm stuck on edge I definitely will be going back to net10 service.

the towers around your area have to be running on the newer 1900mhz spectrum or the hspa wont work.
heres a website that will tell you exactly that. http://www.airportal.de/
Hello everyone currently have the I605 and having problems keeping full signal (i mean the "No Service" icon) using a carrier call Solavei which runs off of T-Mobile's network... I have the correct apn settings, unlocked bootloader, rooted and running Liquid Rom. But no issues when I put my Verizon sim in...
is anyone else having these issues using other tmo networked carrier?
i605 on tmobile how to
Install jedi x2 rom (4.3)

Well, it worked! I had crossed fingers and a chest full of dread as I began the move from Verizon to Straight Talk. Read many a post that said it could be done, some that said it couldn't, and a few nightmare posts about something going wrong. I did this with a rooted, but otherwise un-modded Galaxy S4. No added ROM's, kernels, or hacked or cracked anything. I'm not even sure you need to root it, but I was bored the other day and thought I would give it a shot.
I went to Straight Talk and ordered the SIM card kit for the BYOP program which was a $55 investment with the 30 day time card. I chose the AT&T Micro Sim Package which doesn't matter as the SIM I received was a normal sized SIM with a micro break away cut out as well.
I fired up the Registration/Activation page from Straight Talk, filled out all the info being sure to use the SIM card serial in place of the MEID/IMEI, and ported over my number from Verizon. Verizon has no PIN, you just need to provide them with your Verizon password for your account.
After that, I called ST which was a PITA, but I wanted to make sure everything went through fine. After hearing the verbal warning about how the SCH-I454 may or may not work with their service, and hearing how there is no refunds for the SIM card or the time card, I said go ahead and activate the SIM. He did so after reading me about three pages of BS and then telling me it could take up to 2 days for the number to be ported.
I continued to play with the phone with the VZW SIM in it until it went dead (about 30 minutes later), then switched out the SIM and began the conversion.

GSM Mode Speed Test Results with 2 bars of H service: 351 Ping - 1.63 Mbps Down - 0.38 Mbps Up
Global Mode vs. GSM Mode:
Make sure your phone is set to Global Mode or GSM Mode by going here:
settings/connections/more networks/mobile networks/network mode
Voicemail:
I noticed I had a Voicemail icon, but when I clicked on it, it routed me into the *63 loop of "Call can not be completed, blah blah".
This is due to Verizon using a different access for voicemail than ST. It is easily fixed.
Go to settings/my device/call/voicemail settings/voicemail numbers
and enter your cell number.
Now when you click on the VM icon or press and hold the 1 key, it will take you to your VM.
If you have a VM icon stuck on your screen, simply call your cell from a different number, leave a VM, then retrieve and delete it and it should disappear.
Verizon Bloatware Removal (sort of):
I figured since I wasn't on Verizon anymore, I could go ahead and get rid of the VZW bloatware all over this thing. There are ways to do it, that I found on these forums but I'm not very savvy when it comes to installing ROM's and such on phones so I chose to just play it safe and go to
settings/more/applications manager/all
and Turning Off everything that said or started with "Verizon".
Day 2: Continuation of Self Education
So I started receiving annoying pop up messages asking me to sign into my Verizon account. I could menu tab out of it, but it was mucho annoying. So I started digging deeper into this glorious website and the forums and learning about Safe Strap, ROM's, and flashing modules.
This led me down a bright path.
I ended up following the directions on this site in regards to installing Safe Strap v3.71 from Hashcode and the RootJunky (Tomsgt) Youtube installation video. Backing up the Stock ROM and then decided on the Hyperdrive RLS14 from sbreen94. Following the directions as outlined in the RootJunky (Tomsgt) YouTube videos, everything installed easily and I had zero issues.
Now in order to use Safe Strap, you will need root access, but finding that information on here is fairly easy. Easiest way is to search for the Tomsgt post where he links a lot of his videos. I believe it is even a sticky.
If like me, you are brand new to this whole thing and a little intimidated, it's okay. Just take your time, don't get in any hurry. Watch the installation videos prior to beginning your own installation, and just be careful. You are in good hands here.
Continued Discovery:
One of the side effects of switching over to ST from VZW was the addition of having the + sign added to calls in the call log. Now this didn't affect making calls or sending texts via your contact list, but if you tried to call back from the call log, the carrier assumed you were trying to make an international call and would drop it.
There is no way to fix it via the Calling options in settings but I did find a work around. An app by the name of Prefixer, put out by 253°Below (253below.com).
With this app, you can set rules to drop the + sign from outgoing and incoming calls. It's still going to show up in your call log, but when you tap a name or missed call to call them back, Prefixer automatically removes the added symbol and everything works like a peach!
Reclaiming Device Space:
Flashed HyperDrive RLS15 over the stock ROM this morning. Flashed the Modules before reboot and after install. Only issue I had was TouchWiz Home crashing on occasion, but a kindly soul on here told me it looked like it was an issue associated with restoring data. Although I didn't restore data, I also chose to just flash over the Stock ROM and use the installers Wipe/Factory Reset option instead of wiping the ROM slot first (Dumb move). All I had to do was boot into recovery with SafeStrap and Wipe the new ROM, reboot, and good to go. Now have close to 6Gigs of free space on the Flashed Stock ROM.
Update 13th April 2014 at 10:52 AM:
Over a month in now and everything is still working fine!
Update 30th April 2014 at 06:36 PM:
Got a new job that takes me all over the state of California and can absolutely confirm that I have 4G LTE from ST on this phone, with the above APN, when I am in an area that supports it.
Update 25th November 2015 at 03:57 AM:
Just upgraded to 4.4.2 VRUFNC5 using the info posted by Surge1223, as well as Hyperdrive RLS20 by sbreen94. Everything still working like a charm.
have you gotten 4g to work with your at&t sim? the bands are both the same so just curious.

I haven't even tried. I may look into that a bit more and see what I can find. I tried a few different listed APN's, but to no avail.
Cool thanks. I would definitely appreciate it. My friend is looking at switching so I'm trying to help him out. I think I may have read somewhere that the 4g capability was dependent on the sim card number.
I'm told in my area that the Straight Talk service uses Verizon towers. Does that sound plausible? If so, I imagine the switch over would even be less of a hassle :fingers-crossed: $70 a month savings sure sounds tempting as my contract runs out this fall.

It doesn't look like ST has 4G in my area, so I can't really help out with that other than just making wild guesses and such which wouldn't really be any help to anyone. Sorry.

I believe they do, but it's all really dependent on phone model and area. You won't be able to use an S4 on a Verizon tower through ST. You would need to have ATT or TM service in that area to support the GSM for the Galaxy S4.
Verizon S4 will not work on ATT LTE, but will work on 3G. This is due to different LTE bands. As far as ST using Verizon, the older CDMA ST phones use verizon. ST is moving towards GSM hkwever.

When you order a SIM card from ST you have two options to choose from, the AT&T based version or the TM based version. Both are ST SIMS, they just run on different networks.
Yes, I am on the ATT based Sim, all is working for me, but receiving MMS....
MMS fixed, using hangouts as default SMS/mms

Strange, I haven't had any issues with MMS. What APN are you using?
Update: I actually had this happen to me the first time I renewed my monthly plan with ST. Just have to call and have them restart your plan to fix the issue. I used to work for Virgin Mobile and knew exactly what the issue was but it still took the ST guy about ten minutes before he grabbed a supervisor and they confirmed it.
This is assuming it worked in the past.

It would be phone dependent, if you are using a ST phone it would need to be one that has the letter "c" at the end of model number. I do not believe you can use VZW towers with a BYOP SIM, but I could be wrong.
