Hello Guys!
I'm about to order this phone to substitute my 2013 Moto X. The main reasons (in order of importance) for me considering Z2 are the following:
-Battery Life
-Price
-Waterproof
-Camera
However I'm concerned about getting to know the opinion of well educated xda'ers who have owned this phone for longer now. Do you guys think I should get the Z2? How much would you recommend it?
More specifically: Are you satisfied with the latest stock firmwares? Are you still able to have a nice battery life / camera after flashing a custom ROM? Are Sony devices easy to unlock and root?
Thanks in advance.
I've not long since bought one. It's a flagship phone at midrange money now. The later ones (Z3, Z3+) don't bring any real changes over it to justify the price difference.
Sony are always late to the party with updates but it doesn't mean they fix the bugs! So hold off the latest version for a bit to let them catch up.
4.4.4 is well polished on the Z2 and well worth keeping for now. Get one, you won't be disappointed!

Thank you! Any comment on rooting and available ROMs?

What he said, I switched to the Z2 from the OnePlus One, due to the amazing battery life (It really is insanely good)!!
Why are you still on Kitkat? I think Sony has done a great job with Lollipop on this thing

They changed the way Bluetooth works and it wouldn't pair properly with the Parrot system in my car. Also, I couldn't get a 3G signal with it and that's the best I can get where I live. Maybe these issues will be fixed in later builds, I'll try them from time to time.
To Charlie, no I've not tried rooting or any custom roms. I must be getting boring in my old age but I've been happy as a clam with 4.4.4
Z3 has less battery capacity than Z2 due to the fact that Z3 is a bit thinner than Z2. Go for Z2.
I would suggest Z3 over Z2 anyday.. Differences you ask?
- Better Display
- Better Camera + higher ISO
- Much better battery life
- Slim and better built
- Waterproof'ing improved
I'm not saying Z2 is bad, but Z3 is truly better in my opinion and from my usage when i used my friend's phone a lot of times.. I own a Z2 and i don't regret.. Although we have to agree there were too many defective units in Z2 while there are hardly any in Z3 series. Plus Z3 design is perfect and it has better build quality despite it being slim, its tough and waterproof is fault'less. Display is more sharper and better compared to Z2.. So i would suggest you to go for a Z3 right now..
Just some technical details
Z3:
7.1MM thick mesured (i think sony say 6.9)
3100mah battery
Upto 10hours SOT easily (acording to a couple Z3 owners i know)
Overal improvement of the devices hardware
Z2:
7.9mm thick
3200MAh battery
Upto 7hour SOT with heavy useage
If the difference is less than 80 euros go for the Z3 :good:

Hi All,
I'm in a bit of a dilemma here. Let me elaborate:
[Background]
Currently on my first android phone, the LG Optimus One and considering it's almost a legacy phone, it has an active dev support and even JB Roms were made for this device. However, i'm currently using the MIUI ROM nd really loving it's interface.
[Current Scenario]
A friend of mine will be coming down from USA, and asked me if i wanted anything, So i thought it will be a good time to upgrade my phone, as i am really tired of installing a custom rom almost every other week, also tired of the legacy ARMv6 phone,
So i searched in newegg, amazon for a phone under 350 USD, and narrowed down to Xperia P and Galaxy Nexus.
Now, I know that if i get a Galaxy nexus, I'm sure i wouldn't have to worry about updates and the really strong dev support, but on the other hand I really love the looks of Xperia P. Also i feel a 4 inch screen is perfect and it has a better camera too.
Now I'm really not into gaming on the phone, and would like to use the "phone as a phone" mainly, with internet browsing, music, HD videos and photography as the other uses.
I also feel that a 4.65 screen is way too big to fit in my pocket.
I have a few questions regarding the Xperia P:
So i'd like to know how the build quality of the Xperia P is?
Is having a non-removable battery a major CON?
Is the Sony 'modded' version of android good enough to not use the custom roms?
Will there be a dev support for Xperia P in terms of custom roms and kernels in the near future?
All in all, which phone do i finally choose in that budget range?
Regards,
CD

Ok, I have XP for couple of weeks. Build quality is excellent (aluminum unibody) and screen is gorgeous (bright and colorful). I think that non removable battery isnt a major CON, but the capacity could be (about a day on single charge). Sony ICS ROM is fast enough and it looks ok. We have allready couple of custom ROMs and Kernels including CM9.1 so I think that future of developing on XP is bright.
Which phone to choose? Hm, I dont know, both are good, its up to u and ur taste.
Edit: XP will get JB in Q1 2013.
P looks more slick and feels solid to the hand than GNex.
But spec-wise and current software(buttery JB), it's GNex advantage over P.
Tapatalked from my Xperia P
So Galaxy Nexus's only advantage is the super fast OS updates?
How does the camera and music compare between them? The screen isn't that important to me, as i feel there will be a negligible difference between them... Please correct me if i'm wrong

Build quality is sexy, recieved a lot of compliments from my friends, really looks and feels like a premium product despite its mid range price. Having a non removable battery is only a con if you're the type to carry around a spare battery (I dont tend to this) for when youre running low, but with quite a small battery this might be a phone that people would have liked to able to remove the battery, but you can still reset the phone without a battery pull. I very much like the experience of Sony's android, looks nice and is quite smooth in my experience, but up against JB on the nexus not so great i guess. Im hopeful for some dev support in the future, because Sony arent the best when it comes to updates right now we're close to getting cm9.1 i think, i cant really say much on what the future of this phones development holds i dont know much about development... But if you're picking between the Xperia P and Nexus, the nexus has more future support and a better screen and better chipset. Dunno about the nexus camera but ive found pictures and videos taken on my P a bit grainy, and shots taken with auto settings arent always great.. I'd still go with the P because i like the look of it, that was a big thing for me, how the phone looks.

It's kinda sad that Sony ditches it's products even before a year is completed for the phone, for example the 2011 models aren't getting any updates and i'm sure the same fate awaits the current series of Xperias.
To be honest, I'm really tired of installing custom ROMS frequently, but then i have to depend on them as my current phone(LG Optimus One) has a pathetic stock rom. But Hats off to the devs at the optimus one thread, they even managed JB(CM10) on that phone.
As long as the stock rom is decent enough, i don't mind using an 'older' version of android. Therefore the advantage of frequent updates that the galaxy nexus enjoys doesn't apply to me. i just want a stable phone.
Even the bigger screen of Nexus One is a deterrent for me. Atleast thats how i personally feel.
I'd like to know how the battery life of the Xperia P is, as i'm reading a lot of conflicting reviews regarding this part.

Battery life is decent, about one day on moderate use (1 hour of talk time, 2-3 hours on wlan, couple of sms, couple of camera shots). And about updates, I got ICS update, and one small update after that (bug fixes). XP will get JB in Q1 2013 (new rumor say in early December 2012). Three updates in less than a year, enough for u?

If you just want to use your phone as a phone without gaming or watching videos the battery should be good enough in the p.
The stock roms are great and look amazing, I prefer them to vanilla android.
The update policy of Sony is okay, even if the 2011 only 'got' ics. I mean, not many other companies update their low end / not flagship phones. Many people I know didn't even update their 2011 Xperias to ics because they don't like it (or don't care). For anyone who depends on the newest firmware there are custom roms.
I'd get a p because of the look and the camera. You can update the p to a newer firmware with custom Roms but there is no way you'll ever get a better camera etc. for the nexus.

I feel the screen legibility outdoors is unbeatable in the case of the XP (maybe due to the extra white pixel) , though I have only compared it to the nexus s and HTC legend...
I like the feel and class of aluminium finish (HTC and Sony) more than the plastic feel of Samsung...
Outdoor shots using the stock Sony camera are truly brilliant in detail, but I wish I could say the same with indoor photos and low light photos -both are afflicted by a great amount of noise...
For music, as mentioned earlier, you get the Walkman app, nuff said
I get a day's worth of battery life with moderate 3g/WiFi usage and 1hour of calls, but I carry around my charger just in case and I have a car charger for busier days... Sony's implementation of fast charging is also good, the battery reaches 90% within an hour...
The software updates for Galaxy Nexus will definitely extend beyond JB, but the same cannot be said about Sony...
I ordered the Xperia P guys
Thanks to everyone for helping me making the decision
Ladies and Gents,
Last year, I was lucky enough to get myself after the demolition of my Galaxy S3 a smartphone called, Sony Xperia Z1 Compact. I really really like the phone but the scratchy (it looks after a year with cover like 3rd world country province street) and basically, I found some things that really doesnt go with me. Xperia Z1 compact responds sometimes a bit strange. Maybe i just need to reset it to factory setting.. I dont know. But I do really love the camera of Z1 Compact. I think its far one of the best!
Now, I have seen yesterday some nice offer from our local electronic store for both Galaxy A5 and Samsung Alpha and I am thinking getting one
Now the criterias for me are:
- Camera, I do love city trips and I rely always on my phone camera to capture some very nice memories.
- aesthetics
- responsiveness and easy swyping or typing
- screen good enough to read and to look at pictures
now ladies and gents, what would you advice? Keep Z1 compact? go for Z3 compact? or get A5 or Alpha.
Thank you very much in advance for your help and answers.
Kind regards
Z3 Compact has better battery than any of the other phones you mentioned. I dunno if that´s important for you, but thought it was worth mentioning.
As far as looks go, I would settle for the Alpha. Some people diss its screen for not being HD or cramming a lot of dpi in it, but I like it better than the one on my Nexus 5 (probably the AMOLED thing going on with saturated colors)
The camera on the Alpha is good enough, I find it ok. Tried shooting in HDR mode but I couldn´t see much difference between it being on and off (again, compared to my Nexus). Samsung has some cool software touches on the camera for selective focus, skin softening, etc.
When it comes to typing, just get the google keyboard instead of the stock Samsung one and you´ll be set, no problems with swiping or typing.
For me, the choice would be between the Alpha and the Z3 Compact. Get whichever costs less or, depending on where you live, has better customer service, service, parts (in my case, Samsung. It´s hard to find Sony parts around my location).
Go for the z3 compact. The alpha is good but it's lack of support from the developer and the bettery life is not that good if u coming from the the z1 compact .And the A5?not worth mentioning

I've used z3c and alpha and I like alpha better in terms of screen size. Battery life on alpha isn't bad either but if spend 50$ more and get the extended battery it rocks on battery life front too.xperia are supposed to have better cameras but none of them work good enough in auto mode compared to samsung phones.
Infact I'm going to list my unlocked att alpha version for sale soon as I like the phone a lot and ordered the exynos version because it is supposed to have even better battery life and I don't want to be at mercy of att for updates as I use the phone on tmobile
Battery life is certainly not as good as S5 or other flagship phones but its not Unacceptable either. I have seen mixed reviews on the battery and found that 850F model of the alpha has better battery because of exynos 5430 chip which is 30% more power efficient than snapdragon 801 (alpha 850a) model.
thanks guys for the feedback!
I have looked at the Z3c today and compared it to Alpha and A5... Is it me, or Sony could have extended the screen more vs the space that arent used?
Talking about looks, I find Alpha more better in terms of simplicity and luxury.. it feels like a premium phone...
right now, Z3c is like 70 CHF more than Alpha. So we will see
Hello everyone I have a question that I'd like opinions on if possible. I had a z5 compact and sold it because I wanted to try a nexus 5x. I loved the smoothness of stock Android but the size was just ridiculous for a 5.2" screen. So I gave the phone to my 14yo son who needed a phone after his Iphone 6 was acting up. I really miss the z5c and I'm using an old z3c right now. so I was all set to purchase the US model(even though no fingerprint reader) I didn't think it worked great anyway..but here's the thing, I know that htc, lg, and Samsung are coming within weeks. With my main criteria ease of use with one hand, the lg may be too big right of the bat. My hangup with Samsung is that the s6 I had, had terrible battery life and the lag because of TouchWiz. HTC has me intrigued but not sure about sense UI. So should I wait to see the actual phones when they arrive or is the z5c still a good contender? Part of me wants to just buy the z5c and wait for Marshmallow but part is still getting curious about the s7, even though my hunch is that the same old Samsung problems will be there,, or the m10 to see what it has going.. You know there is something to be said for having the latest hardware and software. What do you think?

stay with z3c and wait for snapdragons 820 devices
I think you should wait for a future compact phone.
The Z3C has solid battery life and performance. 720p screen and small, like the Z5.
Since the Z3C uses x86 Android and the Z5 uses x64 Android, you'll probably have more free RAM because both devices have 2GB of RAM. (Same happened between Nexus 5 and Nexus 5X).
My case: the best scenario for me is a Nexus device with [Moto_X/Z3C/Z5C/iPhone] size/resolution. The last one was the Galaxy Nexus (because Nexus 4 and Nexus 5 were too width for my hand).
I didn't buy a Z3C (I'm coming from a Nexus 5) because the price was near the Z5 Compact..It was like...400€ vs 550€ at that time.
If the 6.0 serving us well, then Z5c still a recommended choice but who knows.... we're still waiting......

Yes. Ideally it would be an easier decision if 6.0 were indeed out.. But...

In my case, Marshmallow will decide if I keep that Z5 I bought in October and is currently gathering dust... or if I sell it and buy a different brand.
The current firmware (Lollipop) is awful. My reccomendation: If Sony can get its sh*t together and release a proper 6.0 firmware , the Z5c is probably a good choice (price should drop when the Z6c is out)... but if Sony's iteration of Marshmallow firmware is as bad as Lollipop is on the Z5, STAY AWAY from Sony.
Back in October, I had to choose between a Z5, a Moto X Pure and a Nexus 6P. I finally got the Z5, and I've regretted that choice every single day since. I don't blame the phone though (hardware), but I blame the firmware quality and Sony who doesn't seem to care at all (Certains bugs were known and reported back in October. They're still present. That says a lot)
Wait for Marshmallow... then make a choice

It must be better, I didn't see one Marshmallow which is worse than Lollipop but I have no idea how great of MM on our Z5c. Since the Z5c still worth some money, if MM turn out not reach my expectation probably I will sell it out.
Overall 6.0 is good at battery and improved memory management, pretty sure issues like lagging and battery draining been fixed. The only problem is the camera.

There are very very few phones that can provide both one-hand-operating ability (or portability) and the real experience of a flagship if I don't consider Sony's compact phones. I may think that iphone 5s can do, but its battery life just sucked.
Well, you can take a look at z3c, that is able to flash to CyanogenMod and then get mostly the same experience with stock Android or even better, and as well as better battery life than z5c
I'm actually using the z3c now. There are things about the build quality that I like better in the z5c though. I don't flash or rom because.. Well I just don't know how and I don't think I really want to. Apple is coming out with with a 4" updated 5s on the 15th of March so this is yet another option but it IS an iPhone lol. Btw, thanks for the replies guys. Very helpful

i well buy it with second hands.
For me it's a really good bargain for its price.
Good hardware, & a lot of devs, -> incredible rom choice
Last OOS 3 are good too.
For battery life, depends on usage.

Unless you're getting it at a really cheap price, I'd suggest you look at something newer. The SD801 is full 2 generations old. There's most probably going to be at least some noticeable performance difference even with the current gen mid-range offerings with SD650/652 (all other factors like skinned UI, bloat, etc. being equal).
Plus Nougat has already been released, but no SD800/801 device will be getting it; they can only go upto MM. So OOS 3 is officially the end of the line for this device.
Having said that, I'm plenty satisfied with the device personally.
So you'll have to weigh what would be better for you

The only area where the other phones you've listed surpass the OPX is the camera. And the screen size to a small extent, in case of the 5.2" Xperia Z2. Other than that, OPX should be good.

what about battery life i'm gamer specially the game with 60fps; in the test of gsmarena the battery life is really bad (54 hrs) before i have z3 compact (101 hrs) and he's nice so the battery life on OPX is bad is that true? and i don't like the biggest size like z2 1+1 and i hope the OPX is good in one hand

I find the OPX pretty comfortable to use with just one hand. And battery averages around 5hrs SOT for me, but I don't play games, so it may vary for you. My usage includes watching a lot of videos, and quite a lot of browsing.

I love my OPX! Sexy AF. I'm actually on the lookout for a second one. LMK if you find one for a decent price
I don't have huge hands, so this size of device is perfect for me. I like the fact that OnePlus caters to rooting and custom ROM's because I like to tinker.
- Battery: I was a little off-put by the battery life at first, but then I realized it was the OOS ROM. I moved to RR, and now I get over well over a day without having to charge. When its less than that, I know its some app messing with my life.
- ROM: go with CM13
- Camera: use Sultans HAL mod; I've never had any complaints with the picture or video quality
- Multitasking: the 3 GB RAM has always been more than enough for me
- OTG: a bit finicky, but it may have been the native app or my adapter. I use MiXplorer now and it works a charm
- I love the display. I have DPI set at 400 and black theme everywhere.
Other points:
- wireless charging would be nice, but for the price I'm not complaining!
- the tri-state notifications button is pretty useful.
IMHO this phone is by far the best in its class - I have owned a lot of phones. Now when I find myself considering a new phone, I compare it to my OPX and it doesn't come close.
I've had a few mishaps with it; but always been able to repair it.
cheers!
Yes, yes, it's possible to love a phone. Heck, you sleep next to it, don't you? Rate this thread to indicate your love for the Sony Xperia X Compact, all things considered. A higher rating indicates that the Sony Xperia X Compact is an incredible phone that you enjoy tremendously. You love it.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Plastic housing feels AMAZING, sharp corners do not!
I totally agree. The X Compact is the best Xperia i've ever owned. The only downside of it is the slippery back. Without a sticker or a case it's simply not usable because it slips out of hand like… yeah. Whatever.
I love my compact. If the battery withstands time I'd love to use it for the next ten years! Size, performance, battery life, audio jack, micro sd card... Everything is just that perfect for me.
Does anyone have reason to think we'll see any more updates, or have we reached the end?

Yes, there is reason to expect updates: http://www.xperiablog.net/2018/08/1...e-aosp-build-instructions-for-xperia-devices/
I am also very happy with my X Compact. Slippery back is sometimes annoying. Also my old headphones do not work with the phone. And WIFI sometimes loses the connection without a real reason. But the phone was still a great bargain as Sony had to sell it for less than they initially had planned.

I would expect dev/custom stuff, but I was thinking more of official updates...

Well if Sony is working on it, it gives a reason to expect an update. Not more not less. In the press this phone is not on the list to receive a 9.0 update which gives a reason against expecting an update.
I like Sony ROMs (with customizations) but I believe the custom ROM support for this device so far is also excellent, so I will not be worried to switch when the need arises.

What ROM do you think is the best for x compact?
I suspect, based on the phone's original release date, that we'll see security updates through September 2018, but perhaps not thereafter. That would be the 2 years support which I understand to be Sony's policy. Of course, we might be surprised. Considering that the phone went from Android 6 to 7 and then to 8, that's not bad at all, in my opinion.
