Whenever I use ANY rom that isn't based on stock I get random reboots. I'm currently on stock ics and really want to be able to run later versions of android. I can run padawan rom and blackstar perfectly fine without any random reboots but for other roms I somehow get random reboots. Am I flashing roms the wrong way or is something wrong with my phone?
Any help is appreciated!

After flashing new ROM, did you wiped cache+dalvic cache and factory resetted your phone?
If not then do so, it'll be helpful for you.
Also try to clean flash your ROM, after wiping system and data.
PS: Also check the ROM your flashing is stable enough and don't have major bugs.

Order is incorrect. Factory reset, wipe cache and dalvic cache, flash ROM, flash a compatible gapps package, wipe cache and dalvic cache again, reboot system. Let rom fully boot. Only enter your wi-fi and google account info at this time (If asked) .Let settle for at least 10 minutes after boot before playing with your newly installed ROM. Best to use gimmeitorilltell's TWRP version 2.8.0.0 or possibly newer or most recent CWM. Use of incorrect gapps, or fiddling with a roms settings before letting it settle in will result in problems. Follow instructions/tips in the OP of the forum thread dedicated to your your chosen ROM.

Ok, I'll bite again....
Many who have had ongoing, unexplainable things going on with their phone recommend 1)a new or different battery (a fresh battery does wonders) or 2)wiping everything and going back to full stock....whatever shipped with your phone. Like a reset. Start over.
Edit: and lollipop gapps come in 5.0 and 5.1 and like I said earlier make sure you've got the right ones.

I did both of those already. I'm currently using a new battery and went back to stock multiple times then returning to a rom. Nothing seemed to work.

Full wipe would be what you're doing.
Factory data reset/cache/dalvik
After you flash the ROM let the phone sit for 5 minutes and before doing anything else...reboot the phone.
Let it settle again. Report back with results.
Hope this helps.
downloading again now will try and let you know .thanks for the info

I'm not using any ROMs yet. My Amaze is still sitting in its box.
I'm just going off my experience with flashing ROMs on the MT4G.
New one every few days. Just some general tips and tricks I learned from flashing ROMs.
It may or may not help with your situation. I know often it did for me.
If it's a technical issue perhaps posting in the BeastMOD thread would better assist you.

Yea, always let a new flash sit for 5-10 minutes. When you change framework, everything needs time to 'settle'.
You also might want to try the Revolution HD Super Wipe for the Amaze, you can find the link in Mikes ROM post. It's simple and I've used it bouncing between the two, I prefer BeastMod and have had no problems, it's much faster than stock and has been very stable. Like the previous post said, it needs some time to settle in and I usually throw in a reboot or 2 and you're good to go.

I've seen a post about this one in the EVO area, but not here amongst us SGS3 owners:
When I reboot my phone, it always goes through an "Android is updating, application xxx of 3xx" counting up - and takes two or three minutes every reboot.
Is this normal under ICS?
Hmm, I'd say this is Not normal. One of the big "selling points" of the gs3 and ICS is the quick boot time. For me it is very quick. Maybe u should try doing a factory reset and see if it stops this behavior??

If you're rebooting your phone after you wipe your dalvik cache, than that is normal. Reason being is that it stores applications for optimization so that the OS can run more smoothly. When you wipe your dalvik, it clears them out, and then when you reboot, it rebuilds the cache for all applications. Just do a normal reboot without wiping anything and see if it still does it.
That is not normal if it is happening on every boot, only if you wipe your dalvik cache then yes it will update.

Yep, just a simple reboot or even a fault / reboot does the same thing. I'm not wiping the Dalvik cache or anything. Happens every time I boot my phone, and I've noticed over the past few days that I never seem to go into 4G/LTE mode any more. Curious - I guess I've laid the hammer on it a bit too much.
Are you using a custom rom or rooted? Or are you completely stock?

what rom r u using ????
with aokp there are setting to which the user can wipe cache and dalvik on every reboot
I read on another forum that a TitaniumBackup odex file may cause this on certain phones. Try uninstalling the apk and then re-install it.

Sure sounds like it. I'm using the "Route66" rooted ROM with the Invisiblek overclocking kernel in place of the recovery.
Most likely the overclock. i ran the stock rooted 66 with no issue. I also have titanium backup installed without that issue.

Worth a shot. I'll give it a rip and report back... Thanks!
hmmm... Uninstalled and replaced Titanium Backup, reflashed the stock recovery: no joy there. I'm still getting the rebuild every time I boot. I suppose when I have more time (read next weekend, I'm working 12 hours every day this weekend, then my niece is in town for a week), I'll blow it to hades and start over.

I flashed FlappJaxx Beta 3 and had a bad down load or something so anyway tons of reboots and nothing just the non stop vibrate.. well i i finally got it back to the down load screen after pulling the battery several times. and got it Odin back to unrooted and turn on followed the unroot instruction well i left it stock and have had same issue where i click something and it flashes and just vibrates over and over until i pull battery.. well is this phone dead is there a fix?
I odin back again and same thing im going to odin back to stock again then do a stock root and flash another room but its doing the stupid reboot over and over vibrate thing even with the non-rooted stock rom. i just can't seem to find any direction on how to fix this or is it just a lost cause. wanted it to hold on till Note 2 hit shelves but looks like a s3 in my futures.
OK didnt work still FC and boot looping this time i installed Kies and put in download mode and updated the firmware and im getting same thing. GOSH DOGGIT hahaha.. Yea i need some advise i tried everything ive read i must be missing something somewhere.

First of all, I'm no pro at this stuff but I feel your pain.
It sounds like you are getting stuck in a boot loop of sorts.
What I would do if I was you, after flashing a rom, go back into Recovery mode on the phone and clear out the cache partion, wipe Dalvik cache, and then wipe data/factory reset. After that, reboot your phone - it should start up normally. This is what I do to my phone to get it to function as it should.
Hope that helps
i went in to the advance tab and formatted everything hahah.. it juts wiped and odin back to stock again bout to wipe it and try to odin root see if i can get it done. worth a try ive tried to much stuff im bout to take phone out get my 338 tape to a zombie target and have some fun!

Agreed ...
When returning to stock via Odin ...you must reboot into your recovery and wipe data and factory reset the device prior to rebooting.
Even though you wiped prior to flashing the stock Odin .tar image.
These devices stay dirty even after wiping data on occasion ...g

oh really? wow i didnt even think about that im wiping again and flashing odin to stock but this time after it boots i will wipe factory reset. then root factory reset and fix permissions. thank for the help!
Always welcome ....
Fixing permissions is overlooked a lot ...
And the wrong permissions will cause FC's all over the build ..
I always fix permissions after any flash or modification ....it's just a good habit to get into ...IMHO ...g
I tried CM a while back (WAY back, actually - pre-ICS) for the i717. It wasn't bad but after a while I went back to stock because for me it just 'felt' better. Hard to explain it other than that. In any case, I've been on full stock ever since and was happy with it.
Then Official JB comes out from the carrier and my phone is laggy as all hell and it's gotten to the point of royally pissing me off to the point that I'm considering my options.
My question is this: Do we know the cause of the lag? If so, is it fixable via custom kernel or something similar, or do I need to go to a whole separate ROM to get away from the problem (and are there any in particular that are recommended if that is the case)?

I don't recall, but if I had to venture a guess I'd say probably not. I followed the above thread to the 'slow 4.1.2' and disabled everything I could on that list and did a restart, not sure which one did the trick but now it's nice and speedy.Hoping it stays this quick and isn't just a factor of not a lot built up in memory yet. I'll try a factory reset if it bogs down again.
there could also be some existing apps that continue to run in the background.
you might either go into app manager and force close them and clear their cache individually
OR
maybe reboot phone every day or two. clearing any cache build up. kind of a preventative maintinence thing.
if you ventured new ROM, may I suggest Padawawn.
every phone is a bit different, but I have had the best results ever
4.2.2 ROMs perform better IMO. Good luck
™
i prefer stock as well and was also experiencing lag until i found the right setup for myphone. started out by debloating. then flashed phasekernel_jb.3 and use setcpu or whatever tuner app you prefer and set governor = fantasy/scheduler = sio/min = 384/max = 1728. all phones are different so you may need to try different settings to find what works for yours. i have not had any lag since.
Here is what worked for me. I had the same issue as you and posted it a while back. This also greatly increased my battery life. I suggest that if you are rooted go ahead and wipe the device - in fact do it twice! You will have to reinstall of you your apps but it got rid of all the lag and almost doubled my battery life.

I am ready to do the factory reset twice. My Note is rooted and have SuperSU. If I factory reset, wouldn't it remove SuperSU also but NOT TWRP?
If yes, can I just install the SuperSU zip from TWRP? No need to re-root?

It can be done by pressing at the same time Volume up and Power buttons until the display lights up, which is when you have to release Power button, while at the same time you should keep pressing the Volume Up button.

I'm using Beanstalk on my phone and I get a lot of random reboots. Mostly when I'm unlocking the phone. I press the button and the soft keys light up the phone freezes and 5 or so seconds later it reboots. It also happens during calls sometimes when I take the phone away from my face and the screen turns on and sometimes when I'm listening to music. It's also happened a few times while I was using the phone. I don't restore any data(unless you count the apps that automatically reinstall from the playstore when I boot the phone, and a few apks from blackmart) I've tried reflashing but that was only a temporary fix. I always have problems with roms being really buggy even though I always to clean flashes.
Can someone help me to fix this? I use this device to play music over a sound system for crowds of people so I really need this bug fixed. (preferably without reflashing but I will if need be.)

This is the one that works for KK
[TWRP_Recovery_2.7.0.0][Unofficial][quincyatt]
Alright i managed to fix the damage but i'm back to beanstalk with cwm. (i had to go through cyanogenmod and put it on using rom manager)
I'm still getting the bugs though(as far as I can tell. I've had one reboot already)
CWM is now functioning normally.
You mentioned a kernel? How would I go about that? I'm still relatively new to rooted devices. So please provide a detailed step-by-step information if you can.

you can go to the Original Development thread and find the thread for the Uber kernel. pay attention cause one is for JB and the other for KK. whichever Beanstalk your running get the right kernel.
you will flash it just like you flash a rom, or more like you would flash the gapps. you don't have to start over flashing rom again, you are just flashing the kernel to it.
the reboots sound a bit off to me as if you are flashing completely clean, KK is very stable for me and most others. maybe try flashing rom twice as you can get 2 different reactions on 2 different flashes.
flash rom
flash rom again
gapps
boot and wait
reboot
go back and flash your kernel
make sure you get all your wipes in middle of all this.

I followed your instruction with the kernel(http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2326786) Had to download it directly to my phone. It didn't like it from my laptop.
Successfully installed.
I'll let you guys know if my problem continues,

I flashed twrp with odin and now I can't flash most roms. (I managed to get an old cyanogenmod 10.1 to work). Not even my backup of my stock will work. I tried switching back to cwm but I get the same problems. sometimes it say they are invalid sometimes it say they aren't for my device(These are all roms I've flashed before). I've even tried new roms. Please Help Quickly!

You are not using twrp from the thread linked. Also do NOT use the twrp app for the recovery as my recovery is not found there. It can only be found in my thread. Flash it in recovery & you're good to go.

If you are using Beanstalk you should probably read the BeanStalk thread, both of these common problems (screen flicker and failure to wake) are solved with a Aroma package made by p0llution. You flash it in recovery and all is good. Link is in 1st post, right next to ROM link. You can also switch kernels and boot animations with same package.

As instructed, you need to do some reading. In my last post I gave you instructions on how to add kernel.
Help yourself first, then others will be more than happy to assist.

I'll give you some slack 'cause I am still close enough to my first flash that I remember being full of questions, but at least read the OP and most recent pages in your ROM thread. You should skim through it all ideally but some are 100+ pages so....
Kernel switching in general does not require any ROM action, there are likely cases that it might be useful but I've never had a problem. You will need to ensure that the kernel is matched to your ROM; KitKat or Jellybean or whatever. I usually do it as I flash a ROM but I have gone back and installed a kernel on a running ROM plenty of times; Uber for instance was released after I had BeanStalk up and running, it is a good kernel so I switched to that.
As a more general point the Note is hard to brick, as long as you don't somehow mess up the recovery (CWM or TWRP) you are just a quick restore away from back to normal. Use the backup function in your recovery, it is your friend and savior. Keep a copy of the back-up on your PC (or Mac) and you will usually be golden.

If you are on BS Rom you should know that all you need to to know is on the OP post-the rom and the patch. The latter contains about 5 different kernels which you can switch betw. to your hearts content. The patch is n00bie proof to make your switches. Really hit BS OP.

Just like all the other kind gents adv'd, it's all in patch's OP:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2535857
Including polluti0n's patches thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=50529734&postcount=854
He uses aroma installer, so when you flash it (personally, I did it with CWM) you don't need to wipe cache/dalvik nor wipe phone, he mentons this on patch's thread while answering questions I believe. The screenshots show you some differences between the kernels he has available, either CM, Uber or PAC.
Personally, I'm using PAC since for me it seemed to work better with the Xposed's Netflix workaround, whereas it didn't work that well with Uber.
Also, the patch provides fixes, for camera, screen flicker and such.. Give it a try, and you'll definitely love your phone more!
