Hey there, I have had no problems with my Z2 until today. My screen is constantly flickering on and off as if the power button is being repeatedly pressed, furthermore the window with the options to power off/ restart etc also appear occasionally. I'm unable to power the device off as when I do it will boot itself up again straight away. As you can imagine, this renders the device utterly useless. Has anyone had a similar experience with this? Or does anyone have any fix suggestions? The phone is out of warranty, I'm unable to replace it.
I made a short video of the problem just in case my explanation isn't clear enough.

Thanks for any help you can offer me.

Have you tried to hard reboot the phone?
If yes, maybe you should think about a factory reset and / or reflashing the ROM..

Very annoying problem this, ive only done the ROM update offered by T-mobile to fix some bugs.
Now it will randomly stop responding when you press any button on the phone it doesnt do anything. If you hold down the power button then tap it again sometimes it comes to life. Ive called it when it does this to try and wake it up as it were or send a text, nothing it doesnt even recognise they have been sent after the restart. All i can do is a soft reset. Anyone have a clue what could be causing this?

I have this problem as well. sometimes pressing the power key all that happens is the keys light up but no response on the screen, you may fin dif you leave it a few minutes it will start to work again. I'm not an expert in these things but it seems to be similar to if you have a faulty memory stick in a pc. I'm on my 5th replacement from HTC on just 6 moth of owning the phone. Its a complete nightmare and renders the phone completely useless. Send it to htc for repair. check any return handsets very carefully they send you as they sent me 3 handsets with the screens incorrectly fitted. Take date stamped pics of your handset also before sending so you can prove the condition of it before it was sent to them.

I am also suffering from this.
So I have two of my old Galaxy S2's which needed their charging port fixed. So after a very long time of collecting dust, I decided I'd fix them, and sell them on.
Now we run into a problem. Phone 1 is fine, I'll be able to do something with that since I can access recovery. Phone 2 is a major pain.
It is pattern locked, and for the life of me don't even remember using pattern lock, so who knows what the bloody pattern is. No data is enabled on the device is seems, so Google can't help me.
Also, seems USB debugging is off, because I can't get ADB to see the phone. This surprises me, because I always have it on.
Now the killer. I can't get into recovery. I've tried all sorts of button combinations, but it simply will not load it. There doesn't seem to be any download mode on it either.
Now, this phone has a custom ROM, so this trikes me as odd, but my brain seems to be telling me I may have had a problem with this phone and recovery in the past.
I'd really appreciate any help in getting into these phones so I can sell them.
Samsung have been about as useful as a wet sock, and Vodafone Australia, well, they're the other sock.
Hopefully someone can help me out.:good:
can you get it into downloading mode (home botton + volume down + power button)?
and wich android on it ?

No, that's not working either.
Right, so I just opened the phone again. I have managed to break the volume rocker ribbon. At least now I can move towards a fix. Sorry to bother you all.
No download mode or recovery, no data = you're not fixing it without doing something drastic on the hardware side (as you've just found out).
ask if is there a way to do a factory reset from computer
I'm currently having this issue and it's really frustrating, I had it first on the Galaxy S3 with 4.2.1 stock rom, I don't know if it might be an app that might be causing this, basically when i lock the phone the screen turns off but then when i press the power button or the home button to turn on the screen it does not do anything, I know the phone is still on because sometimes if i get a text message i can see the blue led blinking and it will continue to blink even when it's frozen.
The only way to bring it back is by holding the power and home button together in order to reset it.
I tried factory reset and it would not work, I flashed the phone with a custom rom for Paranoid Android 4.3 and it worked great for about a week, no issues at all, but then it started freezing when locked again. I hate this and i'm thinking it might be a hardware issue since I've tried different software versions.

Even worst, if i'm listening to music and i lock the phone or if the screen times out and locks when i try to unlock it i can see it's stuck but the music is still playing....
Also, if the phone is stuck and i try to call it, it will not ring not turn the screen on, it's not like the problem is just the physical buttons, i don't know what to do since the phone is out of warranty, I have never dropped the phone and there is no damage on it, it have never over heat either so i don't know what can i do.....
Any suggestions or help would be really appreciated.

Thank you for the reply, do you know specifically what kind of hardware problem was it? Were you able to fix it or you just had it replaced?

But it's really strange, It is a hardware issue and it should affect all the time, not randomly i would think... I don't know if the problem is with the processor or the buttons, i don't know how to determine that..

The first week with Paranoid Android 4.3 it worked greatm even faster than the stock rom and I also liked it because it is android 4.3, the issue started one week after, and i'm thinking that during the first week i did not install all the apps i use, once i installed all the apps it started happening.
The first time i had the issue was right after the facebook messenger app was updated, i tried uninstalling it and the issue was still happening, if i check the running apps and i can see several of my apps running in the background such as Facebook messenger, Viber, Skype, Avast (6 services) Applock, GO weather EX, whatsapp, Facebook.
Maybe i'm just reluctant to think that this is a hardware issue, cause there is no way for me to get some logs or a hardware report that may show any crashes or anything.. I like this phone, it have everything i need and i refuse to think that it's a piece of crab but i've had nothing but troubles with it since day 1...
I dont think it is SW problem because even flashing multi package stock firmware doesn't fix the issue.I tried replacing lcd and display driver but still remain unsolved.
Edit:I think there is a defective sensor chip which I don't have a unit to test already.
hello, i have same issue, and stil stuck with it, anyone can help me?
Hello Everyone. I have my new Samsung S6 Edge about 3 weeks now. It worked flawlessly the first week and a half but lately I've been getting an intermittent problem with the sensitivity of the touchscreen and it is very annoying. I have to swipe, touch a letter (if texting), or touch an icon, multiple times before it will execute the touch. Sometimes it seems as if it is in slow motion where the execution responds 4 to 5 seconds after the touch. There has not been any new software added and I always close out of any running programs.
I have tried all of the following to which none had any effect:
a) Restarting the phone by using the on/off key dialog box
b) Shutting it down for a couple of minutes and starting it again
c) Using Samsung's method to restart the phone by holding the on/off key and down volume key simultaneously
After a day and a half of frustration I was ready to take it back to my mobile supplier when it all of a sudden starting working properly after checking to see if my phone volume was at the maximum volume by hitting the up volume button. It worked well for about 3 days and then started to do the same thing. So again, I played with the volume down and up buttons until the touchscreen sensitivity worked.
I'm currently having the same issue again which prompted me to post this message. Playing with the up and down volume keys seem to help it at a ratio of about 7 out of 10 times. I've searched the web but haven't found anyone else with the same issues. A look at the Applications Manager under Running apps, System is taking up 1.1 GB, Apps taking up 530 Mb, leaving 0.99 GB of free memory.
Any suggestions? Maybe I should be taking it back for a hardware replacement?
Thanks for listening.
OK, so now I've come to the conclusion that hitting the volume up key was just a fluke although It seemed to help sometimes. S6 touchscreen returned to normal again yesterday afternoon. It just comes and goes which makes it rather difficult to show a mobile technician. I'll have to wait until it malfunctions again before taking it in to a Samsung Repair shop.
Me too....
I have subscribed to this thread, in hopes of finding some clues, because I too, have noticed the same exact behavior that OP described and was searching for a remedy/explanation. Also, had the volume up and seemed to somewhat fix it, but like OP said it is sporadic. I, by accident in trying to clear the cache, completely blew away my phone and had to rebuild my phone as I had before and even after a complete reset, I still have the same behavior.
Hi Chris, I stumbled across another interesting behaviour. While the phone is acting up, if you press and hold the UP Volume key (keeping it depressed) you will be able to scroll and press icons as normal. As soon as you let go of the volume key, the issue continues.
This is a link to a video I uploaded today to You Tube that shows exactly the issue I am having.

Just saw your vid, looks like yours is more pronounced than mine (non-Edge btw) and happens once in a while and then it goes away - I am hoping it isn't progressive. I can't seem to identify what triggers the sluggish behavior. I typically clear all apps from the recent apps as a matter of my normal operation in all my previous smartphones. When I notice it the most is when pulling down the notification center and either nothing happens or I have to pull down the shade all the way down for it to stick, otherwise it slides back up.

Thanks Alex, I tried your suggestion and disabled Briefing, cleared the cache & data, then restarted the phone. It did not fix the problem.

for me it's much better..still think it's also the memory problem..as around a half day all is fine..than the lag starts..
Took the phone to a Samsung Repair Shop today. Turns out the LCD display was malfunctioning. It took them 1.5 hours to repair and replace under warranty. Hopefully I won't have anymore issues with it

actually it really helped a lot
thx bro
Yes, I did that same thing, and it did help a LOT.. however after the latest update (I have the Edge+) the issue returned.. did it again, and it "fixed" it, but for how long?
And why is this happening??
my xperia iii just started acting up. I tried to log in to siriusxm and the screen timed out because I was away for a bit. I tried to turn the screen back on when it got stuck in accessibility mode with the screen off and constantly fired the Google assistant. pushing and holding power does nothing except fire off the assistant three more times. if I can't get it to come back to me I can do a factory reset since I just received this phone yesterday and haven't done much with it. anything I can do here?
This isn't normal behavior. If you can return it.
Assuming you didn't install something stupid it's likely a firmware or hardware issue.
+ 1
Was this a new device? Rooted?
Are you sure that you long pressed the power button and not the Google Assistant button by mistake?

Try pushing and holding power + vol up until it vibrates it'll force restart the device.
1. bought via swappa, listed as mint.
2. unrooted
3. it was the power button. it's below the volume rocker, first button on the side. the assistant is the second (and smaller) button on the side.
4. eventually the phone unfucked itself. I did nothing but wait. this actually happened a second time later on except this time the screen displayed my wallpaper at least. I rebooted as soon as I had control and so far so good. I will try power + vol up next time. btw I'm guessing it may have been a software issue. I was moving from a note 8 that had a bixby specific app that got transferred and activated. however a similar thing happened to me with a galaxy tab 4 (without any kind of software mod) so I don't know. I had to wait for that device to unfuck itself too.

Try Safe Mode. It will temporarily disable a lot of user-space configurations that can cause boot loops. It's good for broken launchers, bad widgets, impossible settings, etc.
Take the microSD card out too. Google worked hard to disable expandable storage starting with Android 11. There's the floppy-disk-slow, absolutely useless SAF and nothing else. Performance workarounds from other phones, even if they're as simple as legacy mount options, will cause bootloops.
