Hello guys, new user here, so please exuse me for any mistakes I made (posted in different thread for example). So recently I finally managed to root my Lollipop Sony Xperia Z2 (D6503). I decided to make a backup of my current rom using ROM Manager, so I did so. I chose it, then my phone restarted into recovery and did the backup. When I went back to the OS, I saw that I hadn't any space available left on the phone's internal storage. I found the folder clockworkmod/backup/(name of the backup) and I deleted it, but no space got freed. I found out that after android 4.1 it doesn't actually save it on the sdcard but on: /mnt/shell/emulated/clockworkmod/backup/(name of backup). I tried deleting the folder using Total Commander, but every time I was trying to delete it was giving me a: "Permission Denied" message, so I decided to try and change its permissions. It said that: "Function Succeeded!". but still no luck, and the permissions actually didn't change. Any suggestions anyone could give me? It has been getting on nerves lately because it seems that there is not way to delete it. Thanks in advance.

As I said, when I was trying to delete it, I cannot. It says 'Permission Denied'. Tried with adb from the computer aswell, running as root, still nothing. I cannot delete it from the ROM Manager app because it says that it does not exist... Any other suggestions?

Check this location too
Data>media>clockworkmod
Nope, still the same. Tried with ES Explorer, root checked, granting superuser, but still, when I go to delete it it says: "Permission Denied". And yes, it is read/write.

Hello
I have recently rooted my GT-I9100 and I have a small problem that is driving me absolutely bonkers.
I am trying to edit a file in the directory SDCARD/ANDROID/DATA. I need to change the file permissions but for some reason every time I try to it says "permissions change was not successful. Please note that some file systems (e.g. SD card) do not allow permission changes."
I have mounted it as r/w in root explorer and also used mount / system app to mount it as r/w to no avail. I don't know if it is something I am not doing or something that I have missed but it is driving me up the wall. I have checked the permissions for root explorer and it has the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission so I don't know what else to do and couldn't find any more info on the net.
Also I know this is probably a really noob question but I am in the UK on carrier Orange and I just wondered if I have the right firmware. My phone says:
Android version 4.0.3
Baseband version I9100XXLPW
Kernel Version [email protected] #3
Build number IML74k.XXLPW
All I wanted to do is install unbranded firmware to get rid of all the Orange loading screen. I got rid of the other bloatware using Titanium BackUp
Thanks for your help peoples.
try using super manager
May I ask, how exactly have you rooted?
[email protected] is a stock kernel...
I just downloaded super manager and that can't even find the file when I go into the folder (?)
And erm well I just rooted it using the steps on galaxys2root.com. Is a stock kernel good or bad? I got the little yellow triangle that comes up when I turn on the device (?) LOL. I am a bit worried now lmao.
Nothing to worry about. You could do with flashing a proper CF-Root kernel though pal. As described here http://galaxys2root.com/galaxy-s2-root/how-to-root-galaxy-s2-i9100-icsandroid-4-0/ and all information can also be found here at xda.
Okay thank you. I will do that now. Will that mean I am then able to change the file permission that I was trying to do earlier?
Yes you should be able to. Use https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.estrongs.android.pop&hl=en and set the setting to access and write root.
CF-Root thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399
Okay so I have just done the new kernel thing and got the green PASS on ODIN but my phone is still saying the same kernel version as before. Is this correct?
Hmmm. Now try the ES file manager and set the setting to access and write to root, should be all good.
Thank you very much for your help sir/madam

Hi all.
I'm trying to copy some files to the system partition after enabling write on read-only partitions and remounting it and everything is success, but when I restart the phone, files get deleted and partition back to original. I tried ES file explore and Total Commander.
Galaxy S2, cMIUI 2.10 JB
Hmm.. seems like a hard question!

Hey,
no not a hard question but a bit confusing
So the copy to system works without probs?
Do u have root-enabled on it?
U can try Solid explorer once, too, to be sure.
CHEERS
I enabled root explorer and I mounted the file system to be writable, yes I have a rooted phone.
I can copy to system root folders anything (media files), the files stay there until I reboot the phone then they disappear, they get deleted maybe? how to disable that?
Thanks

That listen like u have to save changes?!
Pls try the Solid explorer (for me the best explorer ever)
Copy files and have a look for root-acces request (should be asked for Solid, if it's new)
The copy/replace the file.

Thanks Hannibal for reply, I got no luck on doing it, they still get removed after reboot. Is there a way to flash these files that I want to copy to system as an update.zip?

Sure there's a way, but I can't help u with it, sorry.
With new Titanium Backup u can create flashable .zips but for sure only from isntalled apps.
Maybe u have a look at google. I remind for a tool which u just say what u wanna flash an it creates the flashable .zip.
Much success....

Edit: Sorry but couldn't answer u yesterday.
XDA had a prob for a while
When I try to install the premium version of Rom Manager i get "youre trying to replace a system app , do you want to continue ?" .
I click yes and then get "App not installed"
Any help or suggestions plz ?
Thanks
do you have root access? because that is necessary to change any system app in any case. Super User should pop up if you do have root. If it does not, maybe you accidentally denied it root privileges on first start.
Yes im sure its rooted and i checked Superuser logs on rom manager.
"created allowed allowed" and its in the allowed list.
Im guessing the installation is failing because its a system app thats in use or something ?
Since its a system app and installed via CM7 i cant even delete it.
It doesnt show in the installed apps list.
Any help is appreciated.
There is a directory under the /system folder I believe(bin?). Under that directory are a series of apk files and I bet there is still a file there for the rom manager. If you remove that with root explorer or something similar you should be good to go.

To anyone having a similiar problem this is how I solved it.
-remount system/app dir to RW
-delete offending APK
-remount /data/data to RW
-delete offending dir (in rommanger's case it was com.koushikdutta.rommanger
-reboot
-reinstall.
Unhappy [Q] Problems with deleting files and replacing sounds
HI all! New use here.
I superuser'd my phone, routed my phone, installed CM11 and all is well. It was my understanding that with apps like RootBrowser and or SuperManager i could browse to files change permissions and delete and remove them or replace them.
I am unable to change my lock sound or boot animation.
Ive granted the permissions to the apps and am operating the root browsers in Root mode. (sorry if my terminology is wrong but im new to this) When i try to replace the files in system/media or system/media/audio/ui they simply dont work, "operation failed". I am able to change the permissions on the replacement files going into these directories to match those im overwriting but its still fails.
Ive even successfully deleted the default lock sound but when i paste the new one into the folder it fails and says stuff like "out of space" or "no room" and then when i shut app and go back in the original file is back!
Can anyone help with this as my lovely rooted phone is being very difficult.
Your partition is mounted as read-only, that`s why you get "operation failed".
Mount it as read / write and should be ok.

When i use the app SuperManager to browse the file system to "system" folder it asks me "If you want to modify the file in teh system, you have to mount the system image first. Please choose access mode: System IMage: R/O"
then
"Do nothing Read only R/W" so i chose R/W but that does not fix the problem?
My errors i get are "not enough free space" well there is plenty of that!
So confused....
Any thoughts
Just ignore the "not enough free space".
Cant help you with RootBrowser or SuperManager because I never used them. I use ES File Explorer, and mounting partitions with it always solved my problems with not being able to delete / modify system files / apps.
Hi,
I'm rooted yet cannot mount system folders as r/w. I am definitely rooted (confirmed by using su command in terminal and the fact apps that require root are working) and noticed this issue when trying to install busybox pro.
It warned me that there was an existing busybox in /sbin and would remove it before trying to install in system/xbin but the installation failed.
I tried to remove busybox from /sbin but the folder would not mount as r/w in root explorer OR solid explorer.
I managed to remove the file in TWRP recovery though.
Weirdly, I've been using titanium backup to uninstall system apps without any issues.
How can I fix this? Repair permissions int wrp?
I presume you followed the same instructions as I. I am on the 621 and currently have the same issue (also rooted). But on my end it is actually worse. I cannot mount the system partition in TWRP either (I mean I can mount it but when I try to delete or move a file I get error messages), and something happened to my download manager (which basically means that for the time being I cannot download apps from Google Play or from the internet, etc). I have a good download manager apk, but when I try to install it it asks me if I want to update the existing app, and the operation fails - I have to try and find a 3rd party alternative for the time being). It is kind of a problem.
(to update, I have very limited r/w permissions in TWRP. If I get lucky I can make small changes.)

I don't think so. I tried this, and I eventually was able to view/attempt to edit file permissions inside of X-plore file explorer (don't know if it is a coincidence, but I first had that success opening X-plore in 'mount system r/w' mode after changing the i/o scheduler to cfq). Anyways, it consistently shows all 755/644 permissions, so the permissions are not being re-written upon boot from what I can gather. But if I try to edit permissions or copy files to System folders, I still got error messages to the effect of "you cannot do this,' even though it is a root file explorer and the system partition is purportedly mounted as r/w.

Thank you for this. Has anyone ever tried this on the Z3TC? Mine is running smoothly enough such that I am reluctant to fix what isn't broken. It seems that early issues I had with freezes, TWRP, etc, probably had to do with my SD card and the Android media scanner.
I've tried it on the Z3TC SGP621. Thus the recommendation.

I have the exact issue in lollipop and I have tried flashing RICDefeat and I get errors.
Sorry for the Hijack :/
Use my RICDefeat from here and run it from terminal. Works only if you are rooted. Afterwards you should have r/w access.
