Only able to partially paste a "hosts" file into /system/etc - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Device: Dell Venue 8 3830 (32GB)
Version: 4.4.2 KitKat
Root process: Temp CWM Session
I'm trying to paste a 31MB hosts file to /system/etc. I'm able to delete the old one on ES File Explorer but when I try to paste the new one ES File Explorer gives an error message saying there isn't enough space. So I tried using Root Browser and it will only do a partial paste of the file totalling to 18.09MB (I even get the superuser permissions popup), so of course I'm still seeing some ads that should not be there. So I deleted it (which worked perfectly fine in Root Browser this time) and tried the Terminal route by mounting and pasting. It did the same thing Root Browser did, a partial paste of 18.09MB. The only thing I ever change in the /system directory is the hosts file.
FYI: I had no problems pasting the 31MB file in my LG Volt's /system directory.

[Q] /system folder read only ?

Copying a font in /system/fonts resulted in a 'read only file system' error.
Googling around looks that the /system folder is mounted read only.
How can I (temporarily) set this folder to read/write ?
By using a rooted file explorer or Super Manager .

Thanks, this works.
When I set /shystem to r/w I can manipulate files / copy files to this folder even from an SSH terminal from my Mac.
Worked extremely well!
Thanks for the help guys. I had installed Beans Stock Rom and lost my VVM support. The market even said my device was not compatible. Tried all prior versions of VVM and none worked until I got this file and used Root Explorer to install it and set permissions as described. Thanks heavens.

[Q] Rooted Kindle Issue

I have rooted my Kindle Fire with the Burritoroot tool. I have successfully rooted the device but I am unable to move my Vending.apk file to the System>Apps directory.
I have installed several file access programs incuding ES File Expert. When I attempt to change the root permissions inside of File Expert it will not let me and in all other programs it will copy the file but not paste it.
I have mounted as read/write and done everything! This is my last step before Android Market is accessable.
Please someone help me!!!!

Delete the ES File Explorer on ICS Buttah

Am trying to fix the ES File Explorer Root access issues by following the steps posted by Joker Fuel in one of the TP forum.
I cant get to delete the current apk under /system/app using any of the File Explorers. How do i get this file deleted ? Any help.
This is what am trying to accomplish:
OK guys, for u guys that are having issues Using ES File Explorer Root permission.
The Root does not work while the app is in /system/app.
so to get it working, u must delete the com.estrongs.android.pop-1.apk
couple ways to do it. u can download a free file explorer off the market and delete the file under /system/app
---------------------------------
reboot your new BUTTAH
download ES from the market
If I am understanding what you want to do correctly you need to remount /system as read/write so you can remove the file.
There are many ways to do this. I like to use RomToolbox, available on the market. Once installed you can open up "Scripter" and there will be a couple of pre-defined scripts, one to remote System is Read/Write.
After you run that script you can jump to the Root browser, one button above, and delete what you need from the /system/app directory.
Remember to remount your /system as Read-Only using the other script, or reboot when your done. It is a bit dangerous to leave it as Read/Write. Better safe than sorry
Thanks. gonna give it a try !
Titanium Backup works on Buttah. Downloaded through market. Then I was able to pull ES through that. Then re-install through market. Now root access and mountable system.

[Q] No /data/system directory

Fro some reason, I don't have system directory under /data (I'm rooted using Da_G's mthod). Any idea why?
Edit: Neglected to turn on Root Explorer in ES File Explorer. D'oh.

Can't Change hosts file to rw (noob)

I'm using a Huwei Pronto and a friend rooted my phone a while back so I factory reset. I was unable to connect to Google servers and I've tried everything I've seen so far.
I am once again rooted using kingroot
Device is running android 4.4.4 KitKat
Every file explorer I've tried has root access
Es file explorer, total commander, fx explorer, etc...
I've come to the conclusion that the hosts file in etc is the file at fault, as it has an extra line.
I couldn't edit or overwrite the file so I looked to forums and found that I needed to remount.
When I try to remount I get
Remount error: read only file system...
I've even tried commands to remount in terminal emulator but my device is not listed when I type adb devices
Pls help it has been 6 months. I just want to be able to use Google play again.
