Lets mod the new 5.1 update - Huawei Ascend Mate 2

There are a lot of things I want/need to do with the new update. No one is really talking about it, I know a lot of people probably haven't even updated yet. But I figured it would be nice to have a thread where these things can be addressed and updated as we get them done.
Xposed - The big one. Currently gets stuck in bootloop with the Unofficial version of Xposed for 5.1. Bootloop is easily fixed by running xposed-uninstaller in TWRP.
Change Phone DPI - currently working - *Requires Root* Change it how you usually do. Edit build.prop, or use an app like RomToolBox. I find that 264 works well and looks good. @xordos has a comprehensive guide here.
Apps don't auto-start after reboot - Partially fixed - *Requires Root*use a program like TitaniumBackup to install the apps you want to start at boot as a "system app". This will allow them to start after a reboot, but you will need to reconfigure them after you convert them. Do this for apps like Viper, over-clocking apps, and Tasker. Credit to @Iguanadon
3rd Party Launchers not sticking after reboot - Fixed - *Requires Root* All you have to do is freeze the stock launcher. Use a program like TitaniumBackup, find "Huawei Home" and freeze it. Make sure you have Nova or another Launcher installed first!
Battery Percentage in status bar - Until xposed is working there is a neat little app that allows you to have an overlay on your battery icon like this. It's not perfect, but it gets the job done. The app can be found here. Might want to leave accessibility access off, because it pops up a window everytime you plug or unplug the charger. Doesn't seem to start at boot. Could be annoying to launch the app every time you reboot...depends how often you do it.
Lockscreen - Stock one is horrible compared to stock lollipop. It is kind of pretty, but it takes multiple swipes to unlock sometimes, it doesn't show any notifications, its basically wasted space. I would like the stock Lollipop lockscreen. Anyone have any ideas besides the not so great one in the Playstore? I would rather have an official system lockscreen. On jellybean you just had to freeze the Huawei lockscreen. Now if you freeze Huawei Keyguard, the there is no lockscreen at all. Just the screen turns on and you're on your launcher home-screen. I tried finding the lockscreen app on a cm12 device, but it looks like it's built into the systemUI. I am currently using CM Locker. It's pretty nice, has notifications, and doesn't seem to have a delay like most 3rd party lockscreens.
Multitask screen - Again, I would like the stock Lollipop one, also built into the SystemUI. Once we have xposed, there is a pretty nice app here. Then you can assign the multitask button on your nav bar to open that instead. Worked well for me on jellybean.
The carrier text in the status bar - Fixed - Disabled in settings>display>display carrier name (thanks @xordos)
Boost speaker volume and possibly fix audio cut out bug - somewhat fixed - *Requires root* It's really quiet for some reason, considerably quieter than it was on Jellybean....I have had success with Viper4. Make sure you have BusyBox installed, and run it it at least once to install the framework. Then launch Viper4 and do all the stuff it tells you....Install driver, disable LPA, etc. Enable speaker master switch, enable "eXtra-loud" setting at the bottom, and change "Effect Strength" to Extreme. I noticed about a 20-30% volume increase from this. Might need to be launched again after a reboot, or install as system app. As a bonus, this app/driver also seems to fix the terrible audio bug where audio cuts out, and the phone starts lagging. Only 99% sure, but it hasn't happened to me while its active.
Change boot animation - Pretty standard guide I made here. This post includes the stock Lollipop animation.
If anyone has another thing or two they want fixed, I can add it here. If I find any answers I will update as well.

Carrier text, this can be disabled in settings - Display.

Nice, I was hoping something's would be easy.

Only launcher I have found with transparent navbar is Holo Launcher HD
Code:

The app "Browser" doesn't work at screen dpi 264 & 268. I've tried other higher values, however the soft menus at the bottom of the screen are not properly centered.
Is there a way to change app dpi without using xposed?

Nope. You can either keep upping the whole phone DPI little by little, or maybe use a different browser. I haven't noticed any discrepancies yet in my apps with 264.

Just in case you missed, the builtin percentage (settings - battery - show %) is there. But it is not inside the icon though.

Yeah, thanks. A little too big and bulky for me.

Volume Increase
Any way to increase the volume steps so that the audio is louder? I have the volume all the way up and sometimes I can't really hear what I'm listening to unless I hold the speaker to my ear or wear headphones. I was using an xposed module to do this, but until xposed becomes available is there anything that works to increase the volume so its louder? The xposed mod I was using is called Volumesteps+ and can be found at http://repo.xposed.info/module/com.p1ngu1n.volumesteps . any help would be appreciated.

I'm not sure how to install it on our new update, but I was using Viper4Android before the update. It is capable of making the volume even louder/quieter.

I tried it when I had 4.3 and couldn't really tell any difference. I tried it again this morning with not much luck either. It just doesn't seem louder than what normal volume would be. I know its not going to be extremely loud. I just want something that I don't have to hold the phone to my ear to hear what they're saying. Also with viper it hasn't been setup for 5.1 yet only 5.0.

On my nexus 5(which also had a horrible speaker), you could edit the mixer_paths.xml to boost the volume. I tried it on my Mate2, and couldn't really notice a difference.
After installing busybox, the viper4 driver, and disabling the LPA setting it recommends to, I can say Viper makes a noticeable difference for me. Probably about 25-30% louder.
Make sure you Enable the master switch at the top for speaker, and the "eXtra loud" setting at the bottom, and put Effect strength on Extreme.
Edit: Added my method to original post, with links.

Added boot animation guide.

ArcAngel, I have been trying mate 7 themes that were posted in the mate 7 xda forums. They are emui themes. They seem to work except that the fonts don't seem to load. In fact, I haven't been able to detect any font in the sdcard.

[Q] [MOD REQUEST] Lower Minimum Brightness/Volume

At night even at 0% brightness I find the phone too bright and would like a way to lower it. I also think the minimum volume level is too loud to be comfortable in a quiet room and would like a method to lower that as well. My last request is a technique to seperate ringtone and notification volume levels. If any of these are actually possible through MODs without hobbled fixes by apps in the Play Store, I would love it! I'm running a modded stock non-deodexed ROM with unlocked bootloader and ROOT. Please help and thanks!

Thanks for the reply! Will modifying these values enable the phone to go lower than the stock 0% brightness? I don't use auto brightness and keep my DNA at 0% brightness most of the time, only going higher in sunlight.

I don't know if you'll consider this a "hobbled app" fix, but I've been using Power Toggles to substitute for my CM habit.
You can adjust notification and ringtone volumes from the notification drawer that way.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried it out and while it does have separate sliders for the two volumes, it does NOT actually work. The two volumes are still tied together in practice. After ICS I think I've read its linked at a system or kernel level and I was hoping someone might work on a fix to address this. Also, referring to "hobbled" app fixes, I saw an app that used a workaround by switching to a custom ringtone to adjust that volume separately but was hoping for a streamlined system built in mod so that I don't have any extraneous apps or screens to delve into to adjust settings. I like minimalistic and debloat anything I dont use. Thanks again for the feedback.
i agree 100% with the sound being too loud, which has been an issue since ICS on even the Rezound...so i think their whole upgrade of the newer OS's made the volume louder. the rezound, on lowest sound level, was 20%..that's ridiculous, it should be half that, or around like 5%. even changing volume steps never worked because there was no lower volume.

[Q] Is there a way to adjust the m7's vibration intensity?

I just switched to ARHD 31.0 from CM 10.2 (had terrible battery life, but I loved the light vibration notification) and I forgot how intense the vibration is on the Sense ROMs. I turn my phone on vibrate only at work to be respectful of others, but honestly this phone's vibration is just as loud as having a ringtone. It's way too much. Does anyone know of a way to reduce the vibration intensity? I've looked all over the forums and haven't found much info other than taking apart the phone....
I know that you can adjust the length and pattern of the vibration, but I really need a way to turn this down significantly. Thanks.
This isn't quite what you asked for, but is my solution to the same problem.
It seems like most of the volume associated with the vibrate function is due to being placed directly on a hard surface that will transmit and intensify the noise. If you place something that doesn't transmit the vibrations well it drastically reduces the volume while still letting you hear the phone when at your desk. I use a small carpet sample (about 8"x6") as a coaster on my desk and when I put my phone down I place it on that as well. It really cuts down on the noise, but not enough that you won't notice it when at your desk. If the carpet is in use, I just place my phone on a pad of post-its or a note pad, which doesn't work quite as well, but close enough for my situation.

***Easier method***
If you want to get rid of vibration completely, but without putting your phone on silent, just use App Ops! You need something to launch the activity, there are App-ops launchers in Play Store or you could just use a Tasker task. Once you're in, just go through all your apps and untick the "Vibration" permission!
No root required!!!

Powerful friends. You are my idol. If you have time, can you help port MIUI on stock? Hah. I will try this colorful ROM ASAP.
works great and multilenguage on spanish works fine some apps in jap
Most functions are ready and stable.
Except that bugs in CM4.2.2, such as the loudly call volume, as it is in MIUIV5 on CM4.2.2.
Is that possible port color OS based on CM10(4.1.2). As I known, current I717 only has CM10 for stable usage although
it has random reboot.
One more, can the soft virtual key can be truned off? As I717 already has real touch key and the virtual key occupies
the screen and no much usage.
I don't see color OS has more apps and functions than MIUI, but it occupies 400M, why?
As I see, it is another style ROM, but not powerful as MIUI it is.
I check that the color OS is already in V2.0.0 (published on 2014.4.4), but current for I717 is V1.0.0.
I had a bit of trouble getting through the "welcome" screen due to the language but after using it for a day the rom feels pretty stable. I have had one problem though. I'm unable to listen to my headphones through the 3.5mm jack. I get a bit of static feedback through the headphones when I plug them in but the music doesn't play through them. Tried the stock music app and Play Music and no luck. Has anyone else had this problem? Also an option to hide the visual buttons at the bottom would be nice since they take up screen space. Themes work pretty well and look great also.
Overall, I like the animations and my phone runs pretty smooth. Just those little things I noticed.

I didn't check the headphone on 3.5mm jack. Just have a fresh try on this ROM and then switch back to MIUIV5 quickly.
Did you notice the call volume issue? The volume is loudly and you need to press speaker for once back then it back to normal. But it will reproduce again in next call.

Yes I was able to test it out and the first time I called it was pretty loud. I turned the call volume down during the dial tone and the recipient didn't hear an echo anymore through the ear speaker. I hung up and called back. They always hear an echo on the speakerphone but not on the in-ear speaker. I rebooted my phone and tried again and they didn't hear an echo. As long as my call volume is 50% or below they don't hear their voice echoing. I only called one person though so it could be different for another. This was after about 20 minutes of testing.
Rooted by installing flashable supersu binary update. Worked. Installed an incompatible xposed module and it crashed launcher. Love the music place and photo place on launcher screens.(launcher in general was sweet) Would like to get rid of nav bar and receive english interface for color os specific settings. (Example: accounts ask for phone #, name etc in english but agreements and descriptions are in another language making them useless if not deceiving.
Edit: Capacitive keys stayed on as well.

Just the fore mentioned issues with the earphone plug not issuing sound (sound continues to output through and speaker) and lit capacitive keys bother me.

Lollipop (5.0)...feels like a downgrade

So, my LG G3 updated yesterday from kitkat (12b) to Lollipop 5.0 (23c).
I have to say, I am on the fence about it being an upgrade. Here is my thoughts: 2 major annoyances and 1 feature I love.
First, "Quite mode" is GONE! It has been replaced with a less functional, yet more confusing and complicated feature called "Interruptions". LG's Quite mode worked perfectly and did everything I wanted it to and was super easy to setup. Google's Interruptions thing is just plain horrible. First, I discovered that I can't set certain contacts to be allowed to ring though, only options are to allow "Priority only" which the Contacts options only gives u "Anyone" (everyone), "Favorites" (those who u add to your favorite list) or " Contacts Only" (all contacts). So, I had to use my "Favorites" list as my "allow" list. Ok...fine. BUT then, I discovered last night, that Interruptions does NOT silence system sounds like charging sounds or the LED notification light. I set my phone on the charger when I went to bed, and it made its chime and the LED stayed on. I was woken up a few hours later when the phone chimed again for Charge Complete and the LED was bright green. LG's Quite mode allowed these features to be silenced. I also dislike how the volume bar pop-up now has tabs added to it to adjust enable/adjust Interruptions...clutter and can easily be accidentally pressed. (SoundHud app helps with this) I have read that this Interruptions is a Lollipop thing(baked into the OS) and is meant to replace any custom manufacture add-on Quite Mode or Blocking Mode(Samsung). I found many folks complaining about this in other forums. I was able to address this annoyance by finding a 3rd party app (Do Not Disturb by Cabooze Software) but I am greatly annoyed that I have to now use a separate app to do something that one once a built in feature of my device.
Second, I am not a fan of how notifications work now. That is that the notification bar and lock screen notifications are one in the same. You can't have one with out the other. I want my weather app to have its notification in the drop down bar, and keep its little temperature figure notification in the upper left of my notification bar.... NOT the entire notification cluttering up my lock screen. I set the option to not show notifications on the lock screen, and it removes the notification bar notifications for that app too...wtf? I can set something about Private or sensitive notifications are hidden, but that only changes the notification to say its private and to unlock to view...doesn't actually hide anything. The new way of dismissing notifications is nice, but if I recall, I could swipe away certain notifications like call or txt on the lock screen before (LG thing maybe). I suppose I can adapt to and get used to the new way notifications works....but does the clock have to be so tiny even when only one notification is up? Seriously, the text is too small.
They still haven't "fixed" the LG keyboard so that u can adjust height of the keyboard when the phone is rotated to landscape mode....still only adjustable when in portrait mode.
On the good side....I LOVE the "Smart Unlock" feature. Only thing I recall having this kinda feature is if you had a Android Wear device. I love how u can have a Bluetooth (or NFC) device paired and it will set the lock screen to swipe....and not have to use knock or password code. I have this set for when my headset is paired and also my Pebble Steel watch. Very convenient feature to have. (I don't get NFC option though....what?! Do I need to get an NC chip implanted in the palm of my hand, so that when I hold the phone, I can use this feature to bypass the lock code...LOL!)
As far as other things go...the phone does feel more responsive. The new animations are quite welcome. I can't really say anything about battery life at this point. I got excellent battery life on KitKat.
I have read some discouraging things about the Lollipop update for the G3. Many forums filled with complaints about it...not just for VZW. A few of my co-workers who have a G3(various carriers) each one of them has issues and/or complaints about the update and discouraged me from updating. I also was quite confused as I was seeing VZW G3's for sale online starting over a month or so ago(swappa, ebay etc) that already came with Lollipop 5.0 and they claimed it was the official release. I was indeed suspicious of these phones that they were installed with a leaked OTA, but 23b as far as many insisted was the official OTA, but I(and several others I know in various states) never got 23b. I went from 12b to 23c. I checked the OTA option on the phone and the Update software on my computer frequently enough, never gave me any other update. Maybe VZW waited to push out the OTA in my area(Twin Cities, MN)...and thus we got the latest version.
Anyway, I guess its a love/hate relationship with my phone at the moment. :silly:

Excellent! Just installed it. SoundHud is perfect to address the annoying larger volume sliders default to Lollipop. (its not a Quite Mode or D.N.D. app) Thanks for the recommendation.
Still, yet another 3rd party app I have to install and having running to "fix" things that Google changed....hope it doesn't affect battery life at all.
Both apps arn't free though....hate that.
That's what I use all of my Google Opinion Rewards money on, apps I don't want to buy.
LOL
BTW, I haven't played with it on Lollipop yet but the description on SoundHud says...
Description
SoundHUD is a highly customizable volume panel replacement that doesn't require root access. And maybe best of all: It comes with a true silent mode for Lollipop users!
What's in the box:
• Multiple styles - choose between an expandable volume panel, a statusbar volume panel, or just a thin line that stays out of your way
• Lollipop silent mode - tired of the lack of a true silent mode for Lollipop? Yeah, so are we!
• Long press actions - launch any app simply by long-pressing one of the volume buttons
• No root required - leave the drill at home: no root, no Xposed - keep that sweet, sweet warranty!
• Volume stream lock - got a media tablet? Turn on volume stream lock to always adjust the music volume instead of having to deal with a useless ringer volume
• ...and much more!
Like Lollipop's design and simplicity? It sure is swell, but it seems the stock volume panel didn't get the memo - if you've tried getting Lollipop to shush while still getting woken up in the morning, I'm pretty sure you were on the verge of feeding your phone to Rusty (pro-tip: plastic doesn't make a very good dog treat!). Enter SoundHUD, which comes with a true silent mode for Lollipop, an expandable volume panel with separate, draggable volume sliders for every volume stream (ringer, music, notifications, alarms, in-call volume), and much more!
Silent mode HOW-TO
1. Go to System settings -> Sound & notification -> Interruptions
2. Turn OFF all priority interruption switches
3. Get up, do a little dance, and enjoy the silence! No more calls, notifications, reminders - just alarms!

Works fine for me. But I did not got to settings and adjust Interruptions settings as they said to. That would interfere with the Do Not Disturb app I have....I do want some things to be let through.
Honestly, I don't care nor have ever used a pure Silent mode during the day.
Only time I want everything (except alarms and certain contacts- mainly my work contacts) "Silent" is at night set to a schedule(10p - 9a).
Downgrade? I feel the exact opposite. I think it's a huge upgrade and I love the way LP runs. Both stock/AOSP based roms are awesome. I hope you get the issues worked out so you can enjoy it.
12b is rootable, so is 23x (a,b,c). Can be done in situ, no need to downgrade, root, and then upgrade.

Phone not rooted. Not sure if it can be. I know that 12b was not rootable. I have no intentions of rooting requadless.
Either way, Do Not Disturb app works fine.

Welcome to Lollipop, Google is your friend.
Oh and by the way, alarm clock won't sound if you set to "No Interruptions" even if you set it as a priority notification.

When I was using Interruptions, the alarm did sound fine. First thing I tested.

I was told (and read) multiple times, even by a dev that 12b is not rootable..directly. HAd to downgrade or something.

A new root method was discovered a week or two ago that works with pretty much every current LG device regardless of firmware version or carrier. It's not Stumproot, that was patched after 10 b, yes.
This new root method seems to involve zeroing out the laf partition, causing the boot process to fall through to fastboot, or something like that. I did not understand It, no, but theroadwarrior here and others seemed to. Works on the G2 also, if I can get hers away from My Lady Susan !

I don't care for 5.0 as much either. I'm heading back to my 10B backup where everything works. Also, I missed Xposed in just a few days. When Xposed can run on Stock 5.0 I'll give it another go.

Bluetooth issues
Another thing to report. My co-worker reported issues with his car stereo and the G3 after he updated to 5.0. U pair the phone to the stereo and it will play music or sound from any app fine for about 2 min, then it goes all frizzy. Only way to restore proper sound is to toggle bluetooth on and off and re-connect. Tried with a few different apps. I paired my phone (we have the same phone and OS version) and I can confirm the same issue. My phone was rest recently before the 5.0 update. He also reports that he tried a few other phones(not sure models or OS version) but the worked fine with his car.
Weird, thinking it must be something with his car stereo, as both of us have paired our phones to several other Bluetooth sound devices and have had no issues.
Underwhelmed in general
Just like with Apple products, the more hoopla about a release, the less I should expect. Android 5.0 on the G3 is no exception:
Despite the changes in "Notifications", there doesn't appear to be a way (as with v4.4.2) to just have Notification icons appear on the lock screen, without any content.
Despite the change, the recent apps list is a mess, with multiple pages per app for some apps.
What was wrong with the "home" icon??? It looked like a home. Do a lot of people live in a hole rather than conventional house? If they do, how do they have enough money to buy a phone? I have no objection to the new icons per se; it just seems like so much of the rest of the commercial software world, making changes for changes sake. Or perhaps Google assigns meaningless GUI changes to test new software developers ...
Then, for the crowning achievement, lets take more screen space with the new "floating buttons", which block content, and for which there is ample space for the button in the top bar of the app.
I had hoped for LG to fix the sharing of the "recent apps" button (primary function) with the (app-specific) "settings" function, but no; let's keep that UI not only different from most other Android devices, but even different from the LG G Pad 8.3. The latter has the "recent apps" functionality as a secondary function of the "home" button, a much more consistent idea.
Finally, does anyone at LG or Verizon, beta test the GUI? It is my imagination, or in the "Sound & notification" section of "Settings", there is a line titled "Interruptions". Under that, mine always says, "Have no interruptions from notifications" as the current setting, despite the fact that is NOT the current setting.
At least they fixed the QSlide version of the text message app: you can now get to the contacts list from within it. I don't think you could do that before.
Ah well, that's progress, I suppose.
Just my opinion....I like the new lollipop. I've not had any issues as of yet. VZW LG G3... OTA'd to 23C.... Manually flashed 12C aboot and 23C bump'd kernel...then flashified TWRP. No reboots...great battery. Now the thing I most dislike is that there's no silent mode.. I really miss that. Seems the interruptions thing is just more complicated. Other than that...I'm happy.

New user; several issues

Hello guys, Mate 9 user since it launched but just got a M10P last week. Unrooted BLA-L29 8.0.0.141(C636patch01)
I have a few issues and I think it'll be better to put them together here.
1. I feel power saving is more aggressive. Sometimes my WhatsApp only update messages when I open the app. I've set it to manual allowed autostart, also run in background still it does that. Also in network under mobile I've ensured everything is ok.
The above problem also applies to Twitter, yahoo and others.
2. The Mate 9 has an average sound and unfortunately the 10 pro is worse. So I got two apps; volume booster GOODEV (which improved sound level) & Trumedia (which improved sound quality; bass and treble). Unfortunately, they keep going off and I'll have to reopen them. Also at reboots or if I close all open apps.
Is there a way to get them stick and work permanently?
Or is there a very good volume app that doesn't require root?.
3. I use navbar app an also roundscreen corners. Unfortunately, the roundscreen corners app overrides the overlay of navbar app. Is there a way to get them work together?
Thanks guys.
For Notification & Sync of whatsapp & other application do check ignore Battery optimizations & Launch in battery Settings. It will work for sure.

I have heard of this issue but never experienced it. I recommend leaving whatsapp on Auto in battery settings
I think the Mate 10 has great Sound. Note, that on the highest Volume Level there is a boost. It becomes notably louder but bass is goin away... for best experience use the second loudest. I dont thin you can have those apps running all the time... my mate 10 pro sometimes even kills google maps navigation while driving. I really wonder why they put 6gb ram in this phone lol
I only use the XDA navbar and it keeps working... I dont really think you can have both. Personally, proper corners are one reason why i bought the mate...hated rounded corners on my s8+

Ok, I did that in "special access" settings and it seems to be working though taking it back to auto seems to work also.
Thanks

Thanks a lot, I'll try it. Once saw it, like an iPhone x navigation I think.
You should try adding your Google maps to excepted apps for battery optimization in "special access" settings.
If you're looking to increase volume or have presets then I would recommend equalizer pro. No root required and I'm using perfectly with Spotify.
Other than that I understand you can install the audio fx APK package from lineage but it doesn't work in basic speaker mode.
