Hey guys. I've been agonizing over which of these tablets to get. I am an android devotee already. I have a Gnex. What I want most out of my tablet is to be a portable movie/book machine. I plan to use it as my primary netflix device over my xbox because I plan on using it at work on my break and cuddled up in bed. A big issue for me with movies is the quality with black. I HATE when movies get to darker scenes and the blacks are not pure. They appear blotchy and purple-ish. I can't explain it well. My laptop (lenovo y570) doesn't handle blacks well. Another thing I need is for the book reading experience to be superb. I plan on overloading on e-books so I'm looking for a comfortable thing to hold and screen quality to not strain my eyes with words. I'm not a big app user. I just like to read news and watch videos. The most of my app use is with videos and I do plan to use emulators. N64 especially. For my needs, which of these two do you guys suggest?
I would get the Nexus 10 then. I've heard loads of stories of the Nexus 7 having bad backlight bleed. The Nexus 10 isn't immune however, but there should less chance of getting a device with bad backlight bleed.
The sooner they start using amoled screens in devices the better imo.
Nexus 7 for Books
Nexus 10 for Movies
But if you have problems with the black levels, you should get an amoled screen like Galaxy Tab 7.7
I got my Nexus 10 today and came from Nexus 7. I have to say N10 is huge, N7 is a toy compared to it.
N7 is much more comfortable to hold and read, but its rather small.
Double Resolution on N10 could be an argument too. Text is crisp, but the tablet is harder to hold.
For a 10 inch tablet, the N10 is very handy and light, but compared to N7 its so big.
For gaming like n64 you better take the N7. Also reading on N7 is more handy. Youtube and watching series is fine too and its half the price, so I would pick the nexus 7.
I suggest you try out some 7 and 10 inch tablets. The N10 is like the galaxy tab 2 and N7 comes close to Kindle Fire.

My fear with the N7 is that it is too close to a phone. The difference from my 4.65 in. screen on my gnex to the 7 inch screen wont be as much of an improvement in experience over my phone with regards to movie experience. My fear with the N10 is that it will be too big to lug around to work and that reading wont be as comfortable in the 10 inch form factor. I guess I'll have to bite the bullet and jump on the N10. I think there is less downside and more justification for the purchase.

I too have a Gnex and the 2 inch screen size difference forced me to get a n10. Plus n10 got micro HDMI which is essential for me

This idea is interesting. I was about to bring that up. The 8-9 inch seems like a sweet spot. The screen is pretty high res. I don't really want to do any rooting. Its not that I don't know how. I've done it on my old evo and my gnex now. I just want to keep things simple. And the amazon prime deal seems kinda sweet. I'm not sure how I'll handle the limitation with the customization though. That was my biggest issue with the iphone. I hated how restricted I was.
What do you do with the micro HDMI?

I would say the Nexus 7. I own both, the Nexus 10 would suit the movie environment more, which would be suited to home/work etc. But the Nexus 7 is perfect for 'on the go' (literally), its lightweight, perfect for one handed use and great for reading (which is what i do with all the time).
Performance wise, its great, nothing to complain about, i have the 16gb version and i haven't found myself short of space at all. I tether it to my phone via bluetooth and all is perfect.
Aesthetically speaking, its amazing, the bezel is the right size, enough for your thumbs in landscape and enough in portrait to not let your fingers, that are wrapping around, to cause any interference.I had no defects, its a bit soft on the bezel, but well, it doesn't bother me.
Im loving the Nexus 10 though, but i wont be using it 'on the go', rather, somewhere where i would be situated for a while.

I don't like using my laptop for movies because the screen quality is just not good at all. The blacks are terrible. I use it for hardcore gaming. I don't like to Netflix a whole lot on my Xbox because I just don't like going through the menus and I like having a smaller screen up close rather than a TV for movies.

I really like 9" tablets. For me, I'm able to interact with the screen without worrying about spraining a thumb. I had a 10-incher previously and that little bit has made a big difference for me. I actually thought I'd get a KF or the Nook+ (or whatever they're called -- the 9-inchers). Then I found a 9" Tegra 3 budget tab that quieted the German voice of frugality in my head...
In my opinion:
Nexus 7 Benefits:
- Tegra 3 (can take advantage of Tegra/THD-only games and game effects
- Smaller (Portability)
- Stylish Back
- Better Development (currently anyway; device existed longer than Nexus 10)
Nexus 10 Benefits:
- Faster (better RAM, CPU, and GPU; likely to receive more Android updates longer then N7)
- High-res Screen
- Larger Screen (less zooming on websites, bigger buttons, etc.)
- HDMI-out
- Dedicated Front Left/Right Speakers (N7 has 2 tiny L/R speakers in the rear)
- Rear-facing Camera
- Better-quality Front-facing Camera
I had a Nexus 7, and it worked fine and all (no backlight bleed; very minimal screen lift), but I would love the chance to try a 10-inch tablet. Now that the Nexus 10 is out, and with better specs, I can do so I'm really interested to see how gaming is on it mostly. Plus I would find a rear-facing camera very useful (I don't have a dedicated camera; trying to use the N7's front camera was a pain lol).
If it was a comparison between Nexus 7 and a Kindle Fire HD though, I'd choose the Nexus 7, unless you did a good bit of reading I guess (not that the Nexus 7 doesn't have ebooks and magazines, but perhaps the Kindle might have a larger collection). Overall though the Nexus 7 is more versatile and has a lot more features available for it, even without rooting (rooting is particularly easy on the Nexus 7 too, should you go down that path). I can't speak about the hardware of the Kindle Fire HD though since I never owned one, or even looked into it
Oh, and another suggestion. If you can't personally try out a 10-inch tablet, I might suggest making a cardboard cut-out with the exact specifications on size as a Nexus 10 (size specs are on Google's tech-spec page for the N10), and then just try holding it and stuff (that's what I did anyway lol). I learned that I seem to like 10-inch tablets, but I guess I'll find out for sure once I do get a Nexus 10 Can't really simulate weight though, so idk how heavy it'll be...
I think no reason to buy the nexus 7 except for reading books. It's too small to do anything. (well, I assume you have your smartphone to do other stuff liike mail checking etc..)
nexus 7 is really great for on-the-go and gaming.
it is light and small.
playing asphalt 7 on nexus 10 for a long time will be quite a workout but playing on nexus 7 is just right.
nexus 10 is more for watching movies.
it all comes down to you, if you like to bring it along with you anytime, nexus 7 is really the best. It doesn't attract too much attention, it fits perfectly to hold with 1 hand. If you like to watch movie before sleep, nexus 10 might be better.
I also find the Nexus 7 screen wanting, the playbook screen looked better with a much lower ppi. I also preferred the ipad 3 much better than the Nexus 7 for browsing the internet, which I assume is 90% of the tablet's use for most including myself.
I won't know for sure if the Nexus 10 is also much better when browsing the internet until I get my hands on mine but I assume the above applies since the Nexus 10 should be effectively the nexus 7 software in an ipad 4 body with an even higher ppi.
You're better off with N10. I sold my N7 and don't regret it. Anxiously waiting for N10 get delivered.

I have a Galaxy Nexus, and the screen size is no comparison. it may not seem like 2.35" is a lot more, but that is diagonal space so it goes both vertical and horizontal. It really is a lot bigger than a phone screen and the perfect size for reading a book or taking with you on a trip. If I were in the market for a new smaller tablet for reading, it would be a really hard choice between the perfect portability of a 7" and the great specs and still somewhat good size of the Kindle Fire HD 8.9"
Really it just depends on if you want it primarily for reading or if you want to do a lot of video watching. Since you started with movies, then mentioned portability to work, then said you want to load a ton of book on it, I honestly think the Kindle Fire HD 8.9" would be the best choice for you. It is a compromise between both sizes (7" and 10"), a compromise on screen quality between both devices, and is a compromise in cost (but closer to the N7). It is just the perfect balance of all things you listed as wanting to do for your situation.

Yeah the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 seems like a sweet spot in size. I don't know how I like that Amazon software with the ads and stuff though. A girl here at work has the original Fire and I haven't taking much of a liking to it. I wish there was a Nexus 8.5 or something. That would be perfect. I think I'm going to go with the N10. My biggest want out of the tablet is to be a portable movie machine. I'm sure books will be just fine on it as well. I used to have a Galaxy Tab 10.1 and it was great but I gave it to my sister for her birthday. I thought that my laptop would make it obsolete but due to the poor screen resolution, I'm not satisfied with the movie experience. And I cant bring it around to work.

So I got the Nexus 10 (sold iPad 3 to get it) and I am impressed with it. The screen is amazing, I have good battery life, and excellent performance.
However, streaming Netflix is not as crisp, the lack of tablet optimized apps is annoying, and reading is kind of awkward. I don't like landscape reading and portrait mode is too tall.
It seems like the huge resolution is ahead of it's time and I am sure it's just a matter of waiting for apps to catch up.
These are a few things that have been bothering me lately with this tablet.
Anyone else have these thoughts or know how to get passed the early adoption period? I am debating whether or not to sell it and get the Nexus 7. Seems like a reasonable (more universal) screen resolution with plenty of power. Also, seems like a good size for reading and web surfing.

After writing this post, I found some awesome review videos from YouTuber "oode". After watching those, I spent some time tweaking and getting my n10 set up. It helped me realize what a rad tablet we have in the n10.
I still have a few annoyances to figure out with movies (best player to use and rip settings), HD Netflix streaming, and better battery life tips. I am sure more Googling and XDA searching will help answer these.
Before you sell it and get a Nexus 7, see if anyone you know has one and try it out. It would suck for you to sell the 10, get a 7 and find out you regret it. This is my second 10 inch tab, and at first it can see overwhelming, especially with the 10's resolution, but just keep playing with it. It will grow on you. Before long you will have no issues reading in portrait mode. For me its like reading a hard cover book without the weight and thickness. I hope you grow to like, and as for apps, I dealt with that with my last tablet.....not to many tablet optimized apps, and now I am seeing it again. Not a deal breaker for me. I would rather have apps playing catch up then my tablet be out dated in a month. Just my opinions.
Don't get a Nexus 7. The screen isn't very good and screen lift.
I just got mine today and well i can say i am really impressed with it , and i love it. I know there are not many apps optimized for the tab but yeah its not that bad for me. Also My netflix streaming is awesome, whats happening to yours ?
If you feel the screen is too big try using a 15 inch laptop for a while which will put the Nexus 10 inch screen with it's higher screen resolution in/to perspecive.
I have not touched my laptop since getting the Nexus 10 which was not the case with my Galaxy tab 7.7 inch screen which I have sold.
I find, just like my laptop, that I don't need any apps for using the Web and there are plenty of stand alone apps for navigation, music, office, games etc.
I hold the Nexus 10 in landscape like a laptop for viewing videos and web sites with a lot of full width detail so that I don't need to zoom, otherwise I use portrait.
Think twice before selling the Nexus 10 for it is the only tablet which gives a high definition Netbook performance in an even more portable format.
Try the Ocean browser too for it makes Web browsing on the Nexus 10 very fast and it supports Flash too.
I feel the same way OP. I had a nexus 7 and I loved it. Netflix and video media on the nexus 10 is a turn down. The screen is amazing but I sold my nexus 7 for a better media viewing experiece. The watching of media or movies isn't good at all on the Nexus 10.
I'm also debating of keeping or returning.

I don't see the problem with Netflix. Seriously. Plays fine and looks as good as it can considering Netflix streams at 720p at best.
Don't see the issue with any other media either. There are issues with codecs but that's a problem with the Nexus7 as well, just comes with the AOSP territory.

Same here i cant find the problem with netflix, mine looks great. As good as it gets i can say.
Netflix video and audio don't match on my tablet. Also, Frames skips after a while.
Is my tablet defective??

I feel the same way OP. I'm on my second one after returning the first for light bleed, go figure this ones worse. I like the size it just doesn't have the performance I was expecting. Yeah its got a huge rez, but my N4 feels 10x more fluid than the N10. Even just basic stuff like swiping to another screen feels better on the N4. IMO the android experience is just a lot better on the N4, which I find myself using even when I have the N10 sitting next to me.

I did a factory restore a few hours ago wanting to return the Nexus, I reinstalled Netflix right now and it is running good. That's strange. I'm also not getting any WiFi drops like I was getting before. I'm going to keep an eye on this.

Did you get tired typing so much information about your conclusion? And you must be very well placed in the tech community to pass judgement on a device that SOLD, not shipped, sold, one million units last month alone. Screen lift? Seriously? that is so last month's news.

Apples to Apples the N10 is the better hardware platform. No question. It has both a front and rear facing camera. Has a display that might rival the retina display on the iPad, etc.
Get the N7 if you want a tab that will fit in a jacket or back pocket, can be held in one hand and can be bought for under $300. It really comes down to size, and your intended use. The N7 is not for bragging rights. It's for having a pure Google device in the same price you can get a Kindle or Nook for.
I'm here to read about how the new 10's see what problems they might be having, etc. But I am VERY happy with my N7 and take it everywhere with me. When I get the N10 I'll be keeping the N7.

Well, my own anecdotal Nexus 7 experience is that I account for FIVE of the devices. 4 16gb units and 1 32gb. Every single one of them had a major defect, including my current 32gb.
First one had a bad USB connector as well as major light bleed, but never had time to develop the screen lift issue because it was on the way back to Asus in a matter of hours.
Second one had astoundingly bad light bleed in 8 places, once again sent back before the screen had time to lift.
Third one had modest light bleed, but creaked, and within a week the screen lifted an epic amount. I was worried I might slice my hand.
The fourth also had bad light bleed, came shipped with a broken tab on the back cover so there was always a gap on the left side, and (wait for it) the screen was doing an epic lift. Still waiting on its replacement to come back from Asus.
And my final and current model is an October production 32gb that seemed pretty good at first, almost no light bleed and the least washed-out looking display of the bunch. And within two days the screen was lifting.
Now, I only purchased 2, my first 16gb and my current 32gb, both at retail stores. I should also note that it cost me $80 so far in RMA shipping.
I like the form factor for some things, mostly books and surfing on the throne. I'm satisfied with the performance, and not unhappy with the purchase price. It does what it does pretty well. But it's built like a 80's Hyundai.
Love the N10, playing full encoded BD 720p movies with no problems. Haven't tested the 1080p BD encodes yet.
Netflix runs great, Slingplayer runs good.
My N7 goes everywhere with me. It has no issues and was a first run batch.. light bleed? who knows, i dont put mine in a pure black enviorment with max brightness just to find a problem. IMO once it's reported a few times, some poeple go out of thier way to find fault.
I agree the N10 gonna take some time to get used to to read on. But playing games on is fun....

It either increases performance or causes stuff to break (well, I guess it could also do both ). It's worth checking out if you haven't though.
As for being bummed out; meh, I sold my Nexus 7 for a Nexus 10 because of the specs. A15 ARM processor, Mali-T604 GPU, 2560x1600 resolution, that just destroyed the Nexus 7's specs. It seems the Nexus 10 can run hot enough after a long enough period of load to throttle the CPU frequency lower, which is a slight concern. Nexus 4 also does this, but I'm not entirely sure if such a thing occurs on the Nexus 7 or not.
My main interest in getting a Nexus 10 was gaming. However, when playing DEAD TRIGGER and SHADOWGUN: DeadZone, I feel that the N10's size is a bit... too much. Getting a controller should easily solve this little problem though
But in any case, the Nexus 10 also has HDMI-out, rear-facing camera, 5GHz WiFi support, LED light notification, better front-facing camera, and front-facing speakers. Nexus 7 doesn't have any of that (unless something changed with the newer models).
No issues with Netflix for newer videos, older stuff doesn't look great on anything. Videos I'm streaming from PC look awesome and I just use a Nook touch for my reading, need eink for that. Yea some apps don't look as great as they could, but nothing as bad as an iPhone app on the iPad.
I think a lot of my thoughts and feelings stem from just coming from an iPad with thousands of tablet optimized apps, down to less than 100 on the n10. When it comes down to it, I use my tablet primarily for reading, web browsing, videos (YouTube, Netflix and Movies), taking notes, and very light gaming. I don't use that many apps on my tablet. However, I have a lot of apps on my gNexus since it has an internet connection 24/7. The only reason I use my laptop is when I want to do some real PC gaming.

Oode's reviews are the main reason why I bought my Nexus 10! After seeing his enthusiasm for the tablet I was sold. Google need to cut that dude a cheque.

I need a pro advice so this is the perfect forum to ask...
I just don't know which tablet to buy , The aging but still rocking Nexus 10 or the new and shiny Nexus 9.
My only turn-off about the Nexus 9 is the screen. I just don't like the 4:3 aspect ratio because my main use is media consumption and if it was a 16:10 like the Nexus 10 there was no question at all. Also , The screen is a bit smaller than the Nexus 10 which is another thing to consider.
What is your opinion?
Is the nexus 10 still a good buy , Is it gonna serve me well for the next 2 year or so?
Is the newer cpu on the Nexus 9 gonna be considerably faster for everyday use?
Is the nexus 10's screen much bigger than the 8.9 inch of the Nexus 9?
Is the Nexus 9's 64-bit cpu worth buying regardless of the things I mentioned?
It's either 9 or 10. I won't do less than a nexus!

I had a nexus 10 for a few days and the screen is gorgeous. Can't say anything about the nexus 9, but I find I prefer the 4:3 on a tablet. I'll be replacing my iPad 3rd gen with the nexus 9. The only thing that would concern me with the 10 is its age.
I can't imagine the nexus 10 being anywhere close to the performance of the nexus 9. A lot happens in two years. That being said, I don't have hands on experience with either, but I have preordered a nexus 9.
Nexus 9 performance will be a MASSIVE improvement over the Nexus 10. In both CPU and GPU. It is horribly outdated already because the SoC cannot do high CPU and high GPU at the same time, one side throttles badly which means very low gaming performance. In addition, that version of the Exynos processor consumes a huge amount of power, making battery life not that great. You can fix a lot of it's shortcomings with custom ROM and kernel, but in the end it is still nowhere close to the Nexus 9 in any way.
You need to future proof your self full stop! I would most definitely buy the nexus 9. This will last you well !

You can get a refurbished Samsung galaxy tab s 10.5 inch really cheap! also comes with a years warranty! But just has performance issues sometimes laggy and GPU is not much kop, but all the main reasons you mention above, I personally think this would suit you better.
Well , after a deep thought I eventually pre-ordered the Nexus 9 (Tomorrow is launch day isn't it?)
I hope I won't be disappointed from the display's aspect ratio and size.
Other than that I'm sure that it's a beast of a tablet!!!
Just a general poll here. Which tablet have you guys found has the best web browsing experience? This is all encompassing also. From screen clarity/brightness, to tablet weight and scroll lag.
So far the best tablet browsing I have used is an ipad mini 2 (ughhhhh). Fast scrolling, good battery life, but 60%ish RGB gamut makes everything seem dull (and, ya know, iOS).
Here have been my notes over the last few months:
Galaxy tab s 8.4 - fantastic screen, great speakers, quite sluggish scrolling, ok battery. capacitive buttons are not preferred, and speaker placement sucks (a lot).
Nexus 9 (day 1 haven't used since sending it back) - bad light bleed, mediocre speakers, good performance, heavy
Venue 8 7000 - great speakers, best scrolling I've seen on android (with very minimal lag), can run quite hot at times, wifi is very iffy depending on location to router, and how you hold it
Xperia z3 tablet - ok speakers, great browsing, screen is good AND horrible. Good if looking right at it, but if you move it at all the screen puts off a horrible rainbow shimmer. Ive heard it has to do with screen polarization on a large number of devices. A week of reading manga gave me a headache as the shimmer is worse on white colors.
What im looking for is a tablet to browse the web, play music/youtube, and the occasional light game (FF record keeper mainly right now).
Judging fro my list, NVidia shield is a possible option. Also, nexus 9 after software revisions. Or maybe some random tablet I don't know of. Or waiting til a new nexus or galaxy tab come out. What is your all input?
As we know it, the Nexus 6P just got released and there are some big questions out there. I have the Note 4 and the iPhone 6 Plus. Some questions that other people ask as well as I is what makes you want to buy the Nexus 6P or use the Nexus 6P over a phone like the Note 4, Note5, or iPhone 6S/6S Plus? Any thoughts or discussions?
Price. Pure android. Thats about it.

Pure android, good camera, good battery life, and so many options to select rom / kernel. Came from note 5 and now I am happy with my device.

reeeeally not trying to be an arse, but the device has been out long enough now that there are countless posts, threads and articles on this exact topic
I also had all 3 and this phone hands down is better then the other 2.. I really think my Note 4 was a lemon because it lagged really bad right from the beginning and after numerous hard resets I sold it and just got a 6+ until this came out. Wont ever look back and wished I hadnt

I've had the G4, iPhone 6s, and Note 5 this past year. The 6P is by far the best phone out of all of them with the lowest number of compromises. After using the Nexus, I never want to use an OEM-skinned phone again on an ancient OS!
I'm surprised to see I can't even record video in 1080P at 60fps with the Nexus 6P. I use that mode all the time for video.

Here is my feedback on it..
Nexus 6P: absolutely stunning design, feels good in the hand, one of the fastest and stable phones to date, beautiful camera quality, and yes pure androird.
Now the bad, BATTERY!!, for the size of the battery, i would not get over 4.5hrs of sot, this is crazy having most of the stuff and services i did not need turned off. Display very very low, no facebook app to drain, timed syns, it has to honestly be one of the worst batteries i have had. I actually sold it due to the battery.
I then went to a note 4 on kit kat. And my sot streaming netflix, facebook, over 2.5 hrs of calls, everything on 4glte no wifi what do ever since im on the road, i get from 6 to 7.5 sot, even though the note 4 isnt as fast, i cant see myself investing 500$+ for a phone whose battery wont last.
And the note 4 has the good old removable battery and sd card.

7.5 hours SOT? Wow. Never needed that much SOT.

Pure android
Good camera
Good battery life
Easy to root
Stereo speakers
Fast fingerprint reader
I change my note 5 for nexus 6p. For me is better, more fluid, more roms, more updates, no lags.
Best phone I ve used in years.. Keep up the good work google!!! Pure stock is flawless, no need to root!
Only down side is the too sensible power button

You write a lot regarding comparison to Note5/S6E+ and similar.
Currently i own Note4 and here are main factors which stops me from going to 6P.
- camera (OIS and overall quality)
- on screen buttons (making in fact screen smaller during daily activities , not movies or gaming)
At the moment i can't imagine phone smaller than 5,7 and use my Note for photo and movie watching.
DO You think this particular experience might be better on Note5/S6E+

I think for the majority of users, images taken without OIS are good enough for what they actually take pictures for: social media sharing, sending to friends and family, putting on their blog, keeping in photo albums, etc. I'd imagine most folks in those audiences can't tell the difference between an image shot with OIS hardware and the same image shot without, especially considering the 6p has a fantastic camera to begin with. See some examples of images shot from both devices and judge for yourself.
Aesthetically, you can hide the on-screen buttons much like you hide the taskbar in Windows, if you need to reclaim your screen real estate. You can even run a full swipe-gesture navigation setup (or something like PIE) if you really don't like persistent on-screen nav buttons. I also think the Nexus 6p looks much sleeker without hardware buttons on the front. There's nothing to accidentally press either when storing or transporting the device.
The dual, front facing stereo speakers on the 6p sound wonderful, and I can't emphasize this point enough. Coming from a mono speaker like an iPhone or a Note, you really can tell the difference. Add Viper on top of that to tune the sound, and you've got a clear and rich soundstage produced from your phone. Mono speakers just can't hold a candle to the 6p's.
