This really really pi##es me off, as where I live I get 1x data, & usually use my home wireless (wifi).
Recieved the pro, and activated it. It seems disabled by being activated by alltel. I even stumped the blackberry adept person at the local store enough that they switched out the phone, I walked to next door (motel) used the free wireless (to prove the wireless would even function) then let him activate it and headed home (30+ miles into the wilderness). got home and again I cant get Crap wifi to work.
Home is wireless b, it connects, can be seen on the 'simple' 2 wire wireless appliance but the PRO, will not see or try to send data through it. turned off security and everything on the wireless for testing. I can check, but I know the pass for the motel, and I could try again, but am definitely sure that this AINT the issue--> again the phone wouldnt connect at the motel (least not the pre exchanged one) with me or the rep at Altel either, while it was activated and on alltel.
who to call? Any help out there?
my 6800 will still wifi, at anyplace there is a signal and that I know the passcodes or is open.
yes I asked this, at alltel-howard forums, but would think you guys here know more (on second thought, when I remembered about all the stuff you do here, I know I probably should've posted here 1st, but Im kinda mad at the moment!)
Pretty adept at computers, I do IS as my real job, anything I can do to help trouble shoot? yeah the 6800 has been flashed & I even noobed around with cooking a few time. appreciate any help you guys
i Have a touch pro and a touch diamond, both under 2 weeks old and the wifi works fine with both of them, maybe you should try a custom rom and see if they changes anything. but there is no reason it shouldnt work with the stock rom

goony,
Is it an Alltel? are you positive that wifi is working, not the "data" connection with alltel towers (cell call)? My proof is that if I goto my basment, I have no cell service so not any data connction, ONLY WIFI (that is where my wireless router is. that is when I found out the 1st time. Everything else looks right, on the phone it says it is connected, on the router I can see it on the connected devices list.
I have my issue that I believe, that it is some setting that Alltel is setting... like I said the phone would connect via wifi until the phone activated. When I activated (full unlimited data package is on this phone) the phone fully rebooted on its own, 3 times as if getting updated via data plan. Im not talking about the 1st time turn on customizations, those were done before I tested the wifi at the motel lobby... For instance, the volume control buttons - the display app were obviously modified, I am not positive what else was.
I'd LOVE to try custom rom, if I wasnt right in the period of time I can get my money back, or not. after that I will...
yes they are alltel, and to test the wifi i just connected it to my router and then turned of my alltel data and it stayed connected so i am positive the wifi works. you can still use a custom rom under your return period, if you want to return just relock it.
I wanted to double check myself sting to make sure i was realy getting wifi, so i connected and went to speedtest.net and did a speed test and sure enough it showed my isp as roadrunner(my home provider). Have you had this problem with multiple phones? are you checking the internet option when it connects? and do you have it diconnected from the pc? my wifi wont work on my diamond hooked to a pc.
Has nothing to do with alltel. Maybe with the rom or the phone. Now I hope you're not waiting for a pop up to show itself on the main screen asking if you want to connect because you could wait forever. Go to comm manager enable wifi/ go to start->settings->connections->wifi and make sure options are set to "all available." If you can even see wireless networks on the list, the wifi is functioning correctly and there is a router settings conflict. If you don't see networks on that list in wifi, then there is a rom/hardware problem.

Hey thanks!
But, it is the Stock shipped rom, I have my HTC 6800 right next to this one, connected and surfing the web, both show up when in the home WIFI router config as connected, yet the pro sends NO DATA to ie or opera, (cant locate any webpages) or any app that uses internet/data.Unless there is something I need to do with PRO that I never had to do with the 6800 (mogul) that I just flashed back to stock shipped rom, ready to sell on ebay...
what I dont know is, well, most of the people wifi to tether a laptop or something, I dont! Sure that will be neat in the future, but RIGHT NOW, Just I use WIFI when I am at home and dont even have signal or evdo near me... (remote locations that I live, the tower coverage sucks out here in ks...) Got to fix this soon, or this Beyotch is going back to alltel.
Another thing, this bad boy pulled this crap, as soon as alltel activated the device (so I could use it as my phone!) when it was NOT activated, the wifi worked (proven at the motel next door to the Alltel store I exchanged this phone). BTW, I was able to test it on the 1st phone shipped to me, while it was activated, it pulled the same thing, when he unactivated the phone, we could almost pickup the wifi from the motel next door (distance was the only issue I think now looking back) but seemed like a chip problem.
Where I got screwed was we believed the wifi to be bad on the 1st phone. So he got out a new phone, and before we activated it, I went and tested the wifi, it worked on the 2nd phone. I thought wall was fine, it worked. then I had him activate it, assuming that proved I will be able to use the wifi. So I leave the store thinking OK wifi works. I get home, and again unable to use my home networking wifi to open web or apps. unacceptable. Yet the 6800 does and still works flawlessly (as long as you slide the wifi sider on side to on {inside joke}).
follw me better now?
What brand router do you have? How many devices are wireless? And it connects to other locations but are you sending and recieving data? Try this link http://www.wmwifirouter.com/trial/ and install on 6800 if you are not normally around hotspots. This will test the t-pro's ability to send and recieve information via wifi. Now it is sounding like an IP address conflict.

Sweeny, Im in the houshold router (made by 2wire) I can see it (the Pro as well as the 6800) each get an ip. (I work In IT, so I know what you are talking about in ip conflicts, all that.) I have even set the router to manually setup IPs now, then set the ip inside the Pro, as well as the default gateway, dns all that.) I'm telling ya, it is more like it doesnt know the DNS or the gateway (just like I disable internet surfing on the computers at work that I still must use networking)
I copied the DNS and everything from a working laptop (ipconfig -all) on a wireless laptop today, and still as if it was disabled.
This weekend i will test the dang thing tethering with my notebook i'll bring home from work (use the pro as the internet access). if it wont tether either, then I think allHell is doing something. Again if the device is DE-Activated I will wifi... {I'll bet you $$}. I might call alltel, tomarrow night, and try that. I'll have them inactivate it and if it suddenly works, then the question is, what do I do with alltel? they dont have the right to disable hotspot usage do they?
I feel I feel the presence of VERIZON already in Alltel, Luke is turning to the dark side. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
You all thought I was off my crock...
http://www.htcwiki.com/thread/2073117/Touch+Pro+WiFi?t=anon lots of folks posting same problems it looks like.
Need that group of people who can create a kitchen, and hcak tomtoms, to help us with this PLEASE!
No I don't, think you're off your crock I just know how frustrating problems like this can be. Here is what I suggest you do. And if this doesn't work exchange the phone or try a different router. I know what you're thinking....not the router. Truth is might be. Its just like wireless adapters in wii's and ps3's they simply will not work with a handfull of routers even though not clearly documented.
Anyway, change router to static Ip's, safer anyway.
Specifiy gateway, primary and secondary dns, and limit your ip's within 100 available obtainables. Use a 64 bit wep encryption. Change the channel of your router's broadcast to 1 or 11. Use only simple gateway ip range, not pure server. If you need me to provide you with example settings then pm me because I do not want to broadcast them via forum
Good luck.
Dont take this the wrong way....but are you positive that you are disabling the DATA Connection in Comm Manager?
I have had the alltel touch pro since the second they hit the store. I have used 3 of them since and they all work perfectly on wifi. I primarily use wifi and use diamond tweak to activate the wifi standby so wifi stays connected in standby like data does by default and use modaco nodata to disable data as I live in a house that gets a very lowsignal from the tower and eats my battery superfast if I use data. I have a router in the house and one in my office detached from my home and when I had my mogul it often would not switch between routers successfully requiring me to manually connect more often than not. All the Touch Pros connect superfast and switch automatically. I am running mightyrom 4.12 and telus radio which is light years better than stock with signal, speed and batterylife, but even when I was on stock for about 3 months there were absolutely no wifi issues.

Not sure which of us you are asking this queston of...
Thanks, for the help so far...
I was having the same issue (Alltel and all).
I found this post in the MS forums:
http://social.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/windowsmobile/thread/561f18a8-5f64-4359-957e-adb003229f1d
Essentially, it says to "Navigate to START/SETTINGS/Connections Tab/Connections icon/Advanced Tab
Press Select Networks Button
At the top it says "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:"
You want to press on the drop down and choose My Work Network"
You need to tell the system that the Work Network connects to the internet as well. While this doesn't seem like the ideal solution (there should be a faster way to switch it, or it should do it automatically depending on location), it did work for me. I'm sure there's a much more sleek solution out there, though.
Btw... I hope I'm posting this correctly. I'm more a reader than a poster.
Ooop... one more thing. Its non-sleekatude rests with the fact that when you want to switch between wifi and your data plan, you have to go through the whole process, and switch the active network from My Work Network to Alltell Wireless. This is where I was hoping for a better solution. As I say, it does work, but it seems like it should involve less hassle.
Might add this to the WIKI, I dunno but there could be a few more thousand users out there on ATT or SWB using the modem/routers that they shipped when you got DSL more than a year ago...
Everyone that has the older 2 wire brand, wifi modem/router that came with SBC (now ATT). Wierd I know. But Mine has just been replaced by the newer version of that modem/router. and I will be dammed, it works. but the phone wont work with the older ones. Mine was the 2WIRE 1000hw model. they are shipping new models, and finally the phone will work with the wifi on that new router.
Thought it might be nice to know...
alltel model uses wifi just fine
My TP from alltel works just fine with wi-fi all i ever do is turn it on and then select which connection i want to make ...really quite nice...maybe you need to exchange yours...
On further testing of my own setup, I'm thinking my issue was the router. I had done several fixes all at once, and cited the wrong fix as the working one. I happened to reset my router at the same time I did the above suggested fix.
I thought it had to be the device, as my HTC Apache never had an issue with the router, but after resetting the router, and going back to the original settings on the TP, I'm having no problems connecting to the network. I wish I could pinpoint the exact conflict between the two, but now that I have it working, I'm not messing with it.
My suggestion is to back up your router settings, reset the router, and see what happens. Or test your wifi on someone else's network.
Isolating a network conflict can be one of the least fun things to do, but from everything I've seen here and in other forums (and my experience with it) I'm going to say that's the issue, and not the TP alone.
I don't think it likes your router being wireless B, you should try it on a wireless G router before Ebaying it.
I have a HTC Fuze. The last few ROMS that i have been using (Energy, RRE, Tael), all the Apps always use the 3G internet to do their work even if a much faster Wifi is connected. Is there any way to make all apps(including things like email) globally prefer the Wifi when available? Also I dont want to have to keep changing settings to do this, It simply needs to be "If Wifi available use it, else use 3G"
Thanks in advance.
What i did was to go to start>settings>connections>advanced>select networks and change the default connection to the internet to "My work network", rather than my 3G network. This way, if theres any connection to the internet needed, my phone will use my wifi connection. The problem with this, however, is that when you dont have a wifi connection available, the phone will not connect to the internet unless you change the above setting back to your 3G network. If anyone knows a better way, please let us know
no i cant keep switching. thats too much trouble. there must be a better way.

Does it automatically connect to WiFi when a known network is within range even when the phone is in sleep? If yes, does it disconnect once not in use for a while?

As far as I know there is no way to do it automatically. You can use one or the other but they must be switched manually. All HTC phones have always worked this way. Maybe if the demand was high enough which apparently it is not a Chef could come up with an app that would do it. But for now you must do it manually.

that is extremely failurous. not preferring the fastest internet connection is major fail. did not know that.
My phone does this automatically. It uses the WiFi whenever it's on. If the WiFi is off, it uses the data connection.
Maybe I'm understanding it wrong?

what the heck? how? u must help me find out..
i think it does prefer wifi over 3g in WM 6.5...!!
to check it out here is wt i've done....turn data connection off...check that its on in the notification manager "when u click on the task bar"..then run any app that needs internet " opera, msn messenger, email...etc" while this app is online..
now there r two ways to check it
1-the notification manager & see if it turned to 3g data connection...if so u should find a timer running in ur service provider section, if not then its only using wifi
2-check the communication manager & see if it turned the data connection on, if its off then its using wifi...
thats how it is with my touch pro...i'm using energy rom nov. 08 build
Indeed it prefers wifi connections 2 data, but You have to :
1. Have Known wifi spots in range
2. Keep wifi connection on, while in stand by
Keep in mind that if a program starts to use the data connection it wont change to use the wifi one. So firstly connect and then open programs.

apparently its some sort of combo of this. i am using 6.5. any apps that have been using 3g continue with it. and i have to go to the comm screen and turn off data to force new apps to consume wifi. which isnt too bad, certainly not as bad as going to the network options. i would wish they made this a bit more seamless like with the desktop technology, i can switch from wired to wireless lan without even dropping a skype call.

now i have discovered a new problem. even if i open the app after i have wifi turned on and data turned off, some apps just dont want to use the wifii.
Bing maps and google maps for example just tell me there is no internet.
this is really pissing me off, whats the point of having wifi on a phone if the apps wont use it. i dont really care about the google location service if the data is through the internet, but atleast turn on.
lame.
So I got my self to thinking; What is the best way to handle connectivity for my devices?
I have a rooted/rom'd Evo Shift, and will have my gTab soon (hopefully). I generally leave BT on my phone on all the time, and it is currently paired with my Car's head unit to stream audio and hands free calls.
Do I pair my table to my phone via BT and tether?
What are the consequences of leaving that on all the time? How would that affect the battery life of the phone and tablet? I know in the old days when you used the PAM (phone as modem) your phone didn't get any internet connectivity. Is that the case with BT tethering?
Do I pair my tablet with my head unit? I don't know if it can be paired with more then one device. I doubt it though. Maybe just pair hands free from my phone and a2dp from the gtab? Not sure if that is possible, have to read the head unit's manual.
I apologize for the incoherent ramblings. I'm trying to figure out what other people have done along with what works well, or what doesn't work at all.
Thanks,
So I've read up a little more and found some answers.
Looks like I can get GPS information from my phone via blue tooth. This will be awesome in the car. Any one who has done this, is it possible to get internet tethering via blue tooth from the same phone at the same time?
Using wifi to tether data while i use blue tooth for GPS information is possible, but doesn't seem very elegant.
It doesn't look like my head unit can have multiple BT pairings active at the same time. Guess I will have to use an aux cable for the tab and BT for my phone.
An ideal solution would be for my tab to use wifi for internet if available, and tether via BT to my phone if a wifi network is not available. It would be nice to leave the tethering open all day, but I think that would drain my phones battery something fierce. My over all concept it to have a personal network of interconnected devices with my phone acting as their connection to the internet.
Any advice, comments, death threats or criticism (constructive or not).
Bluetooth GPS sharing is very doable. There are several threads dedicated to setting this up. Looks like you may have found a few of them.
Tethering BT data to your phone is also very doable. Again, there are several threads on this, and I'm pretty active in most of them. Been working on this for a bit.
Start with this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1001496
Wifi tethering is much easier. The issue I've had is mostly around BT and Wifi signal conflicts. I don't see it much in just using BT GPS and WiFi Data, but if I receive a call (I use a BT headset when on the road), the quality of my call is in the toilet for at least a minute or so. My guess is that the Tab is trying to get WiFI data from the phone (which it won't be able to because I'm on the phone - VZW CDMA - can't be on the Net and on phone at same time). After about a minute or so, it calms down. Unacceptable solution though.
So, I've now been mostly doing GPS & Data through Bluetooth to the phone. The problem with this hookup is again when I take a call, of course my Data drops on the tab (no way around that). But even worse, the GPS signal gets degraded too. I'm thinking just not enough Bluetooth bandwidth to support Headset, Data, and GPS at the same time?
So my most recent setup (just tried it for a bit today) is to use an external Bluetooth GPS (got one on Amazon for about $25.00) and then Bluetooth Tether to the phone for data. It's a little bit complicated, and involves yet another 'gadget', but I am getting the best results from this setup so far.
Thanks for the info.
I'm on sprint and know the "no data and voice" problem all to well. Even when using maps for navigation on my phone, if a call comes in, the GPS becomes retarded and inaccurate. Once the call ends, all is good.
with getting data from your phone via bluetooth, is that something you leave on all the time or do you have to turn on BT tethering when you want data?

I haven't been using that often to be honest. So when I do, I turn on BT tethering at that time.
I also use Co-Pilot for Navigation. It doesn't need data, just GPS. Map data is downloaded to the sdcard. Just depends on how I feel at that moment. Both nav systems have their advantages/disadvantages.
I'll have to check out co-pilot. storing maps for offline use sounds like a good idea, as long as they don't get stale.
OK, so I've kind of got blue tooth GPS data working. Using an app called "ShareGPS" on my phone and "BlueToothGPS" on my gtab, I've successfully gotten gps data to my tab. Using the BlueToothGPS app on my tab, i can see satellites and GPS data flowing. Unfortunately maps doesn't seem to get location data, and there doesn't appear to be a way to enable GPS data in any of the settings.
Running TnT lite. Any one know how I can get maps to see the GPS data?
I just got my Tab last night and while at work, decided to download a book that I'm in the middle of (Amazon archive). Our wifi at work is weak (to say the least) and I couldn't keep a connection long enough to download one book. It finally dawned on me that my rooted Evo has wireless tether. It worked like a champ! It's the first time I've used it and I gotta tell you, that alone made my day. Nice strong connection and I was able to websurf to my heart's content. I'm running TnT Lite 4.40.
Google Now gave me a rather interesting message: For better location, please enable Wifi. This works even when not connected to a network.
How can the phone figure out my location by using the Wifi antenna without connecting to any networks?
Here's how I originally thought it worked: The phone sees what cell towers are available, then uses data or Wifi to look them up in a database and determines a likely location. But now the app is telling me it really just wants the wifi antenna on. Why?
Because its like when you turn on your Bluetooth it scans near by devices..you connect with them or not its not the question but you can know that how many devices are in your range got it..
Same like when you turn on wifi it searches near by connection you connect or not Google find out your near by wifi networks.. By using that nearby wifi network already registered they find you approximately locations..
we all should be polite enough to press thanks for anyone who helped US.
Oh. Then Google records the location of Wifi networks, so visible networks can be used for location lookups?
Actually, that makes sense. I remember a couple years ago they got in trouble for wardriving and said it was unintentional. It could have been related to an effort to record the location of all visible networks.
That makes sense, but I'm running JellyTime on an Inspire, and it doesn't have the biggest battery. I don't want to leave wifi on all the time. Would it make sense to use Tasker to turn wifi on for a few minutes every hour, or would Google Now even be able to gather enough location info in such a short time?

Why not test it without Wifi? Leave google maps open with Wifi/GPS disabled while you're traveling. If that looks reasonably accurate, just leave them off.
As for timing, the phone can tell your location pretty quickly, but I don't know how Google Now is written. It would probably need to have specific logic that says "check location whenever wifi gets enabled". I'm not sure whether it does.

I'm wondering. There's a lot of info out there on what it does and how it does it. But I'd be interested in the nuts and bolts, finding out exactly what it's doing and when and how.
It is kinda neat. But kinda unsettling too.
I've noticed that whenever my wifi is on, and also the "always scanning" option is on - my phone suddenly connects to a network called "0x".
It doesn't really work - there is no internet. It happened in different places, inside and outside my country.
Does anybody know what it is?
UP
Old post, but happened something similar to me. Sometimes when I have just connected to my wifi network and I look on the menu it displays "0x". Your phone was probably connected to a public wifi or just bugged.
Still doesn't explain it though
In my understanding, the 0x is a garbage SSID that indicates that WIFI configuration data is obsolete.
Ite wonderful if u ask me ☺?
I booked a hotel room and when i arrived thr...my device got connected to Ox wifi and it has over 2Mbps speed...so i was curious about this Ox wifi hotspot so i searched on google and i found ur post and now i am more curios about it. What the hell is going on lol...
.
In my opinion it may have some connection with rooted devices bcz my device is rooted and i have samsung s8 as well and it neither finds this Ox wifi nor gets automatically connected☺:fingers-crossed:
Edit: As far as I see, it might a bug of Android with special cases of bad connection. Like it connects somehow, but can't get SSID. Turning on "avoid poor wifi" seems to fix it.
Same here. I've saved two wifi connections: one is my home network, other one is a network of free wifi transmiters offered by my ISP (UPC Wi-Free). My phone is Motorola Moto G with Android 5.1. It's not rooted and never has been.
I live around elder people and there were no strangers so I doubt some grandma suddenly established malicious network. Probably a bug, but the bug of what? Android? Some external software? I use Nova Launcher and Wigle Wi-fi. Do you?
0x seems to be prefix of hexadecimal numbers, but it doesn't make much sense. It wouldn't mean "hexadecimal zero" (which would be 0x0), but "hexadecimal nothing".
