[Q] s3 i9300 recovery remains stock - soft brick? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Had my device on Cyanogenmod and decided to put stock one back on it H3G-I9300XXUGNA5-20140227080141.zip (used in past no problems).
1. Odin 3.09 new stock rom tar file - success
2. It boots fine and gets stuck on samsung logo forever
3. When try to go to recovery it goes to the stock one
4. When I try to install any recovery via Odin it's getting replaced by stock one (download mode) - even it says RESET/SUCCESS in Odin
5. Yes I do install CF Autoroot via Odin before custom recovery - success (then I get red android logo and messages, one of the saying "restoring stock recovery"
6. I do untick autoreboot in Odin when flashing recovery as they say here - nothing changes
What do I do now? I run out of ideas ...

Try Flashing the stock rom with odin in download mode,You can find yours here

Just tried rom from link provided and exactly same thing happens: boots fine and then stuck on samsung logo.
How would you exactly do rest of steps after that (autoroot and recovery)? Maybe I'm just missing some small detail or is it something more serious?

Need Help badly

While flashing param.tar from TriangleAway thread by Chainfire, Odin showed that its a failed operation. Then when I tried to restart my phone (pull battery) screen only shows "nps_fail.jpg" error message. Is there anyway to fixed this? I can only enter download mode and not in recovery. Will this be fixed by flashing a stock firmware?
*Resolved thanks to guide by Phistachio cheers!

That's what I recommend.
Flash a stock ROM with Odin.
Maybe you will have to do a wipe in recovery ... if your phone will be able to boot into recovery after flashing the ROM.
Good luck !

Had a similar problem just minutes ago but was related to Rom Manager not Triangle Away mod but I couldn`t go into recovery and couldn`t boot the Rom.
This is how I solved it:
Installed Stock ICS 4.0.3 Firmware through Odin but then I got stuck at the Galaxy SII Bootanimation.
Then I flashed Chainfire Kernel and got into CWM and then without a full wipe just installed my old rom and it worked. All apps are still there.

Phone not turning on after factory reset

Hi all,
I've been having a few issues with my S2 (Randomly resetting, freezing, etc) - so I decided to do a factory reset - but it hasn't worked.
When I turn my phone on, it wont go past the galaxy logo. I've tried holding down VOLUME UP, POWER, and HOME - but it doesn't boot it into recovery mode.
I've downloaded odin (the phone is rooted) and was told to download a new ROM and then use the PDA button on odin. But the only file type it expects is MD5, tar and SMD. Whenever I download a ROM, I just get a ZIP?
I'm probably being stupid. Could someone point me in the right direction? I don't care if I lose data, I just want the phone working.

What ROM do you want to flash?
If it's a stock ROM, then extract the zip file and flash the contained tar/md5 file with Odin.
If it is a custom ROM and only provided as CWM-flashable zip file, then use a stock ROM to flash first and flash the custom ROM afterwards, when everything works again.
Here you can get the latest stock ROMs => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1544487, or pre-rooted stock ROMs from here => http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608071, or use Check Fus Downloader from here => http://fus.nanzen.se/ to check for the latest officiallly released firmware versions for your phone in your region and download it directly from Samsung servers.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. I don't care which ROM I use - As long as I get the phone working again. I did download 7comp ROM but I couldn't find any .tar files?
I also converted the ZIP to a TAR but odin isn't picking it up ?!
OK - I've downloaded and installed the latest stock ROM you posted.
It seems to have installed, but doesn't go past the splash screen which says samsung galaxy Sii
Any ideas?
[EDIT] - Phone fixed. I was able to load it into recovery mode and cleared cache. woo
Well done ...now try to go on recovery mode ...if should be able to go....do full wipe...then clear delvik cache...then advance- fix permission ..
Then reboot system ....you are done...
Don't forget to say thanks..

Attempted to root the phone but it didn't work.
I followed a set of instructions, and was asked to wait for the phone to reboot. It now has the "!" rooted icon but won't go past the rooted screen.
System restore and clearing cache doesn't set it back to factory default. Any ideas?

Sorry for late reply. I followed a video on youtube showing you how to root the phone. It looked succesfull as the "!" did appear, but it wouldn't go past that.
So I rolled it back using the original ROM and have given up on rooting it. It's a shame as I really liked Jelly Bean

Brain is about to explode

I am trying to install a stock or custom recovery mode for the time being. I have lost the recovery mode trying to install a custom ROM. Now no matter what I do, I just can't install a recovery mode.
CWM - odin's progress bar is stuck on 0%
TWRP - odin crashes after you click start on the program
Installing from SD Card - soft bricks the phone since it will force into recovery mode.
I truly need a lot of help and would appreciate any assistance or someone to message to guide me step by step. Thanks.

Just in case -- flashing with Odin may require that you are using the stock Samsung USB cable. Are you?
Everything on it is still factory stock, except it is rooted which has been working properly for some time. Worst case scenario I might have to redo this. This is my first custom rom installation basically.
It's the stock USB cable that came with the Note. And I also tried different USB ports.

What's the exact filename you are trying to flash? I remember when flashing recovery to my Note (AT&T-branded Note), I loaded cwm-touch-i717-120414.tar.md5 into the "PDA" field of Odin version 1.85 and left the check-boxes as-is.
Have you used Odin ever before to flash this phone? I'm wondering if the driver has been installed so your PC can recognize the Odin mode that the phone is in. I recall the driver I used was USB_Driver_for_ATT_I717_Galaxy_Note_v1_3_2200_0.exe

I've used Odin before to root my phone and had no problems with it. The file names are:
openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-sgh-879.img.tar.md5 (Crashed Odin)
clockworkmod_touch_recovery_5.8.4.3_i717.tar (Odin had no progress)
openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.1-i717.img.tar.md5 (Crashed Odin)
I can't find any of the latest version of CMW or TWRP for a CM10 installation that works.
Someone correct me if I'm wrong but since you're rooted, can't you install goo manager and have it install the recovery?

Ye you could install it from there or from ROM manager either way though quick ? Is Ur USB cable a good working one? Have you tried attempting the odinizing through another pc? That's for the fella havn issues.

additionally have a look at this link:

I've used it twice and it's very easy to follow. download the zip they have under "sponsored link" and use the Tar in the zip. Also verify that your phone is being seen by your computer, it should display in your device manager as well as show a COM in odin.
USB is fine, no bends, kinks, or frays. The computer recognizes the cord for charging and accessing the phone and the Yellow or Blue COM shows up properly in Odin. I tried the GooManager to install TWRP and it downloads the recovery, says it is installing it and after about 10 minutes goes back to the home screen. No successful installation notification or anything. ROMmanger just fails for me. It shows my recovery as 5.X.X.X and when trying to flash it just hangs on the Flashing popup forever until the screen turns off or a button is press or the screen is touched.
The phone is rooted fine, I just need to put the samsung recovery, twrp, or cwm on it to update it to the latest version to install CM10. Right now there is no recovery mode, just download mode for Odin.

If you tried installing all those recoveries in odin and failed, I would try starting over from scratch. When people soft brick their phones they go here and follow instructions. That link has an odin .tar prepared with the stock AT&T Kernel, System, and Recovery. Notice it says RECOVERY! After flashing that in odin you should be able to boot into recovery and take over from there.
Try that and report back!
I have an idea...do away with Odin altogether
but it's advanced and could potentially brick you.
Take a tar with the recovery you wanna use and extract that file. Take recovery.img and put it on your sd-card (put it on the internal and external sd-card just to be sure).then connect to pc.
Now Issue the following adb command. I SUGGEST YOU COPY AND PASTE IT, IF YOU TYPE IT WRONG YOU WILL HARD BRICK YOUR PHONE
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p22
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK

[Q] This idiot installed CM 10.1 over 10.2. Help?

Hello everyone,
I am a complete and utter idiot, and accidentally installed cyanogenmod 10.1 over a fresh install of 10.2 without gapps on my verizon sgs 3. Now my phone is stuck in bootloop and when I try to enter recovery mode the original samsung logo flashes and then nothing. I am at a complete loss for how i can go about trying to salvage this hardware; I can't get it to talk to my pc using adb either. Any help on initial steps would be very very greatly appreciated.
flashing stock rom with odin via download mode should do the trick.
When I enter into ODIN download mode (by pressing down vol + home + power) its gives me a message saying downloading, please do not turn off target. Do I just need to leave it in this mode and let it do it's thing? It seems dubious that ODIN could download something without fully booting the phone. Am I going to need to download an image of the stock rom to flash? Thanks so much for your reply!!
No you need to download the stock rom to your pc and use the odin pc app to flash it. At this point you can turn off your phone.

1. You can either boot into recovery, flash CM 10.2 and gapps again, and wipe everything when you're done, or...
2. Fire up Odin (PC) and flash the stock ROM and start from scratch.

See that's just it; I can no longer boot into anything but download mode. I'm currently downloading the default kernel, OS image and the ODIN desktop application. I'm not sure I'll be able to get it to flash; we will see
Add it as PDA, not phone. Also make sure repartition is NOT checked.

Recovery Modus is not working

Hello,
I have the following issue:
When I try to start the Samsung Galaxy S2 into the recovery mode with Volume Up + Power
it won't start. The samsung starts shows just Samsung Galaxy II boot screen.
If I release the buttons it goes of and on again and then trying to boot but there i have a boot loop
The only thing i can access is the download mode.
I tried to flash Philz Kernel with CWM, Siyhas Kernel and I tried to reflash the complete Samsung rom.
But also ends up in a boot loop I can't clear the cache or so because i can't access the recovery..nothing is working.
Before that I had Cyangogen.Mod 10,2 on this phone.
Any advise what else i could try to overcome this issue?
Thanks
If recovery is broken you only have one option - get a stock rom for your carrier from Samfirmware, flash it in download mode with Odin, re-root your phone, restore your most recent nandroid backup if you have one, or reflash the custom rom/kernel you were using & start again.
You haven't been using Rom Manager by chance, have you ?

Nope I tried already with stock rom. But it ends up the same.
I use Odin 3.07 and the I9100DXLSD_I9100OLBLSD_I9100DXLS8_HOME.tar flash as PDA one file.
But this didn't solve it. The recovery menu won't boot it is really strange.
I can get into download but this is all i have - nor flashing of stock rom is giving me back the recovery nor the flash of any recovery system.
CWM 6.3,0,6 - TWRP, PHILZ nothing
You need to keep trying to flash a stock rom because that's the only way you're fixing it. Search for Hopper8's 'Odin troubleshooting' thread; try the stuff in that thread. In particular, flash a 3 part stock rom which will wipe your phone & more than likely fix the issue & enable it to boot normally.
***Gosh how to delete in this forum a doublepost?...
Hello,
I could fix it somehow. I just made in Odin a Nand erase all - let it take time and flashed the stock.
Now it works again without any glitch.
muha what a birth
