just curious but does anyone happen to have a list of bloatware that is safe to remove? I guess at this point I can just disable the apps I don't want and after some time if everything is still functioning right....then I guess it's safe to remove them.
I've removed mostly everything like the AT&T drive mode, AT&T Address Book, and such. The only things I kept were the account balance and data balance check apps. Is there an app in specific you're wanting to remove? If so, I can tell you if it's safe or not.

As much as possible and still keep system stability
I don't really need anything that came preloaded except Facebook...I take it that it is safe to delete anything that deals with AT&T. I don't use Google+that came preloaded on the phone but I don't know if that might affect other functions of the phone

Just don't remove system dependent apps. I just checked my apps and literally the only preinstalled apps I left on my phone are:
Account Balance
Data Balance
Mobile Hotspot
Visual Voicemail
Everything else that was preinstalled by AT&T I have removed. Make sure you keep the system dependencies though. But apps like the internet browser (as long as you use a different one like Chrome), Lookout Security, Zoe, FX Editor, etc...those are all safe to remove.

I've deleted Google+, but kept the one that says Google+ for HTC Sense because that ties into the contacts. I've also deleted Drive, Hangouts, Movies and TV, Newstand, and the other Google apps, those are completely fine to remove
Sent from my HTC Desire 610 using Tapatalk
thank you for the info on that and I do have one other question. all the preloaded apps that are on my phone are also listed as system apps. if I did want to keep some would it be okay to convert them to user apps by using titanium backup? the reason I'm asking is because apps such as link2sd has a tough time storing system apps to my second partition without making my phone go a little crazy
Yeah that would be completely fine as far as I know. I barely work with Link2sd anymore because I used it on a budget android tablet that has 3 partitions which none can be changed so I have trouble with that app sometimes as well. But yes, you should be fine using titanium to convert them.

Through adb manually. su mount -o rw,remount /system then rm /system/app/*.odex you can do that for priv-app/*.odex and framework/*.odex
I'm wanting to root my att desire 610 so that I too can remove the unwanted bloatware, its seriously pissing me off every time they need an update and there's not enough room for them to even update. This is after moving everything to my sd external. I don't use them, I want them off my phone. What do I use?
If you have root and wp_mod, use 3C Toolbox it's much easier. I'm down to 84 apps @ 374.83Mb and could lean it out probably 10 or 12 more apps.

I recently bought a Droid 2 Global and decided to get my feet wet with android development. To familiarize myself with the platform I wrote a simple utility for managing the bloat that came pre-installed on my phone. I thought there might be other people who would get some use out of this so I am posting it here. You will need to be rooted and have busybox installed to use this application. If you used z4root to root your phone then you should have everything you need.
The application is pretty simple. When you start it you are presented with a list of the Bloat that the application recognizes. Each item in the list has a checkbox that indicates whether it is enabled or not. To disable bloat you just uncheck the boxes next to what you don't want and then press the Apply button that appears at the bottom of the screen. You can save what you have disabled as a profile by pressing the options button and then choosing Save Profile. This is convenient because you are going to need to turn all of this bloat back on if you want to receive updates. If you have saved a profile and a new update becomes available you can launch Bloat Manager, press the options button, choose Enable All and then click Apply to get your phone ready for the update. After the update installs you can launch Bloat Manager, press the options button, choose Load Profile and then click Apply to turn the bloat back off.
The following applications can be toggled on or off using Bloat Manager:
Amazon MP3 /system/app/amazonmp3_1_8_14_signed_zipaligned_Signed_2010-09-09_15-23-51.apk
Blockbuster /system/app/Blockbuster.apk
City ID /system/app/CityID.apk
Friend Feed /system/app/FriendFeed.apk
Kindle /system/app/Kindle-1_0_2-OEM-SingleSign_Signed_2010-09-20_17-31-57.apk
My Net /system/app/Mynet.apk
My Verizon /system/app/MyVerizon.apk
News Widget /system/app/NewsWidget.apk
Performance Manager /system/app/PerformanceManager.apk
Skype /system/app/Skype_mobile.live.apk
Social Messaging /system/app/SocialMessaging.apk
Social Share /system/app/SocialShare.apk
VZNavigator /system/app/vnav_6.1.0.160_Droid2Global_rel_PROD_signed.apk
Visual Voice Mail /system/app/Vvm.apk
Weather Widget /system/app/WeatherWidget.apk
World Clock Widget /system/app/WorldClockWidget.apk
When you disable an application using Bloat Manager it simply renames it to .bak. When you re-enable an application it is renamed back to .apk.
Bloat Manager remounts your /system partition as writable in order to make changes to applications. I came up with this list based on what other people have had success with removing, but I have not personally turned off everything on the list. Changing things in your system partition is always dangerous so please be careful.
So this only renames the app filenames? Is the app still affecting the phone in any way (ie. sucking battery life) once it is renamed, or is it completely "disconnected" from the phone until you rename it back to .apk for updates/etc.?
Thanks I will try this out soon.
Correct, this simply renames the apps so that they are no longer recognized as launchable applications. The applications will not be able to run anymore after they are renamed so they will not affect your battery life directly. I have heard that the operating system will continually try and restart some apps if they get renamed, but based on what people are saying in the bloatware removal script thread on droidforums where I got this list of applications none of these should have that problem.
Let me know how it goes.
The application works, any chance you might add more programs to the list?
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App
Are there any specific applications you would like to see added? I designed it so that the list can be extended but I haven't implemented an easy way to add things yet. If you know your way around a SQLite database you can add new items to the Bloat table to put them in the list. I plan on adding an import feature that lets you add a group of applications from a file in the near future.
Well some programs I can do without are files, car dock, backup assistant, the social networking widget, and news and weather, if you can find a way to ad the .bak extention to them without it hurting the system, it would be greatly appreciated

wtb one for sprint phones, i.e. the Epic 4G
Great solution, how about a "Bloat Manager for Samsung Galaxy S" next ?
How about a general android bloat manager?
General Android bloatware app would be a major win!
The way you implement (renaming to .bak) is brilliant in it's simplicity, well done. I'm curious how it compares to the 'freeze' function of Titanium backup. Anyone?
^^^That's what I want to know too.
i am just wondering but would this work on other phones like the HTC Droid ERIS or any other devices???
Any chance you can port this to the Droid X? Also, do you need to be rooted to use it, or does it work on stock devices?

Any chance for a G1 or G2 version?
I plan on making the next version a lot more flexible in terms of which phones it will be useful for. If you guys can get me a list of which apps can safely be removed from your phones I can add them to the next version.
Technically this version should run on other phones so long as they are rooted and have busybox installed in /system/bin. If your phone has some of the same bloat that comes on a Droid 2 Global you may be able to use this to remove it. Any applications that the program cannot find when it starts will have a ! on the front of their names in the list. Bloat Manager won't be able to turn those off.
I installed this and chose disable all, and clicked apply. The applications can still be opened. Skype still shows that it is running even after I force stop it.
LOL...installed on my G1....all apps had the !

If your looking for away to remove bloatware on the G2 go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=809231
super easy did it myself.
Ok so I’ve seen a few people asking what apps are safe to remove on the EVO 3D, so I thought I would make a list of app names, what they do, and the effects of deleting them. I take no responsibility to anything that happens to your device, but I am or have already personally tested these. I would recommend doing a nandroid backup previous to deleting any bloat, as well as making a copy of all the apps you delete and placing them on your sd card, flashdrive, computer, or wherever else you feel they are safe. This is just a beginning list and I will come back and add more apps and details later!
If anyone wants to contribute just pm me, this list is taking quite a while to do and I am a full time collage student working a part time job as well haha. Please dont flame me for stupid things, this is my first guide posted.

Also, I think these two can be safely removed:

I think they're just themes or skins or something.

That's the one required to watch Green Hornet right?
I'll probably delete it. I liked TGH3D, but it's kind of a dark movie, poor choice to launch this phone with. Avatar on the other hand, wow! But, it probably costed to much to put on the phone.
It's the watch app that is used to watch movies and you can rent movies through it as well. Your pretty safe to delete it .
I noticed that if you delete this:
SetupWizrd.apk
Then, Google won't backup/restore your apps and settings (like Wifi password) to your Google account. Even though, I enabled it in Privacy settings, it still wouldn't restore if that APK was missing.

You can't remove Sense from a Sense ROM otherwise AOSP ROMS would be simple to make
IF YOU REMOVE SENSE ASPECTS WITHOUT A NANDROID OR HAVING SOMEONE TEST IT BEFORE HAND PREPARE FOR BOOTLOOPS
closest thing I can recommend is this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16467400
It hides Sense but doesn't completely make your phone implode

Hi all,
What I want to do: remove all Timescape elements from stock Sony ROM safely (avoiding force closes, not random deletion)
Why: I noticed that a Sony executive announced a week or two ago that their 2013 phones will not have Timescape running through the phone because it did result in performance lag. Instead they will use one app for the same purpose. I want to test removing the lag in my phone by removing anything Timescape.
News on Timescape: http://www.xperiablog.net/2013/01/14/rip-timescape-long-live-socialife/
You need a rooted device and an explorer with root access like ES Explorer in order to delete the apk files in the System/App directory. You can find more information at the bottom of the first post in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1546253&highlight=bloatware.
I would recommend not to delete them actually just in case you want something back. In my case I have only change the file extension so the app won't start. For example gmail.apk has been renamed to gmail.apk1
A few months ago I clicked 'allow Facebook to sync with contacts' and similar options, I thought some features were useful. I tried disabling them all today and it has already made a helpful boost in performance. The true test will be a few days performance.
What I did was root my phone. Then I used an app manager that would allow me to disable system apps. That way I could easily restore any app that are really required. Anything with time scape or Facebook got disabled. I also disabled all system apps that were available from the app store.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using xda app-developers app
No need to root. Just goto the app manager and disable all timescape items and anything else not needed.
I rooted and used Titanium Backup where I uninstalled all "Timescape"-related (appr. 5-6 entries...)

You still need root to delete system apps. Once you have disabled them and decided that causes no issues, deleting them will free up a little space.
A few days ago I disabled as much Timescape as I could and so far it really does remove a lot of lag. The phone is already usable...
It can be nice seeing friend's Facebooks pictures etc. in your phonebook but the lag is not worth it. :victory:
ROOTED JellyBean Safe to Remove Apps List
If you have found other apps that are safe to remove with NO adverse effects, please comment, and I will update the OP.
FROM POST 10, by chicguy
+ Update from carriers (OTA updates) will not work after removing even one of the bloatwares. Disabling the apps will not affect OTA updates however.
+ Don't just remove thing because of the sake of removing it. Know your stuff!
The purpose of this is to show you how much junk you can remove from stock rooted. Most of this stuff can be reinstalled from the Play Store if you want it back.
I would suggest removing ANYTHING that can be donwloaded again later. This gives you full reign over the app...Not just it's data and updates.

Hey good post man.
I just wanna add 2 things I've experienced removing bloatware from this phone. After removing all this an OTA update will most likely fail. Also if you for any reason perform a hard reset it will hang during phone setup and you will need to KDZ flash to make the phone usable again. So to be safe I recommend backing up system/app so you can replace missing APKs if you need to get an OTA update or if you're stuck on initial setup following a hard reset.

Good one here!
In my opinion, best advice is to disable apps. Removing and disabling apps is not different except for disk space and aesthetic. You will not gain much space from remove system stuff, but introduce a whole new troubles of reinstalling stuffs when you want to get OTA updates. Frankly, just buy a bigger SD card (few $ different), use an SD swapper script or program and be with disabling all those unwanted.
Again, my point is: "unable to do OTA updates" shouldn't mean "safe apps to remove".
One might argue... If you are rooted and go to all the trouble to remove these apps, why would you want an OTA?
This list is made under the assumption, this is the Rom you are keeping for a while. If you got this far, then getting to an OTA, if that's what's wanted, "should" require you to do a bit of work. And since there is currently no OTA from this point, it shouldn't matter... yet.
Good job

First, for a newly released phone, OTA is expected to be regularly, so why not OTA?
Second, unless you rely on very popular ROMs, the chance you got updates on customized ROM are rare. So you might miss out security updates (and I know I am paranoid ).
Third, again, disabling apps is not different from removing apps except for little disk space and the aesthetic of a setting page. But disable apps will save you from troubles in case of anything happen (not just only OTA), you can always revert it back in a few clicks.
So, I would say "ROOTED JellyBean Safe to Disable Apps List" is better for the sake of whoever use the list

Might I draw your attention to the second item in red, on the OP...
Oh yeah, now I notice two things:
NOTE: I personally remove this. Most will opt to simply disable it. ... Remove/Disable at your own risk.

This one ... should be accomplished with a "known risks" section, like a "bug" or "not working" section in almost any comprehensive posts in XDA. Otherwise people just think it is totally safe, with the 0.0001% chance of breaking thing. A few thing to consider:
+ Update from carriers (OTA updates) will not work after removing even one of the bloatwares. Disabling the apps will not affect OTA updates however.
+ Don't just remove thing because of the sake of removing it. Know your stuff!
Excellent post! Thanks for this... wish there was more i could turn off on the phone to make it lighter and battery last longer after rooting to jb haha
Doesn't the included script do this?? not remove, but at least safe disable allowing the OTA...?
By the way i know is not the section but any one working on a rom for this phone without having to flash it to p760?
I mean we are rooting, unlocking bootloaders, recoveries, removing bloat and all this for .... i want to get a rom on this thing already lol!
excellent post! thanks for it! I wish there was more i could remove from this phone.
Useful Thread man !
Thanks a Lot.
Useful thread saved me fromlot of trouble

So just to clarify is I freeze bloatware with Titanium Backup do I need to unfreeze them prior to OTA update or I can update with them frozen?

Same question here. I have a lot of things frozen/removed and attempted to update via OTA; ended up getting a dead android with a red triangle coming out of his belly. I disabled the SD (internal/external) swap script but that's about it.
Rooting and freezing/deleting apps screws ur phone after ota.
Hence never try ota afterwards...

guys did anyone remove any of these apps and knows that they are safe to remove 100%. I am on an unofficial build of cm10.1 rom?
Cell Broadcasts
com.android.backuconfirm
com.android.sharedstoragebackup
com.google.android.voicesearch
com.android.smspush
Google Backup Transport
Google Partner Setup
Nfc Service
Service Mode 1.0
Im debloating my rom further just want to see if its safe to remove these (no fc or any other problems) (uninstall via titanium backup pro), Im not really sure what they are or what they do but they keep running in background. Thanks
I remove NFC service and voice search (amongst others), Iirc, I used to remove backup transport and partner set up with no probs on cm7, not tried the latter on 10.

so now on cm10.1 you only remove nfc service and voice search?
btw removing nfc service will make nfc not work completely?
Do u know what each of these removal will affect exactly? what will not work? thanks
Is there somewhere a list where I can read all these stuff? I tried searching, found some lists but no explanation at all.
I remove between 25 and 30 system apks depending which rom I flash. I can't remember them without seeing them.
Check out slim, there's quite a few less.

Do you remove the system app:
com.android.smspush
Im not sure if its an actual visible application, I just see it in my task manager as always consuming about 12Mb ram
I like to freeze apps (not removing them, so that if anything goes wrong i can just unfreeze them)
-com.android.cellbroadcastreceiver (cell broadcasts)
-com.google.android.inputmethod.dictionarypack (dictionary provider) : i never use the dictionary, so i don't need it running 20mbs in the background!
-com.android.providers.userdictionary:
-com.android.email & com.android.exchange (i use gmail so i don't need stock email services)
-com.google.android.backup (backup transport): this app runs like 50mb in the background, ever since i am on custom roms i freeze it without any problems
-com.google.android.partnersetup
-google search
-launcher (i use novalauncher instead)
-picasa uploader
-search applications provider: i dont know its use but i freeze it without any problems
-sim toolkit
-com.android.talk (talk) : i dont use it, i dont need it running in the backgroun
-com.android.voicedialer
-com.google.android.syncadapters.bookmarks (bookmarks sync): i think it syncs the bookmarks in the stock browser, but i use chrome. so dont need it.
these are pretty much the processes that i freeze on every custom rom that i use (either cm10.1 or sammy based).
Some of the services are essential to some people (like talk or dictionary), so freezing them is up to personal preference.
I also use the greenify app to hibernate processes such as maps or youtube that constantly run in the background with no reason, even when you dont use them.
Freezing these apps saves me about 200mb of ram. So multitasking is a bit easier on this ram-troubled device.

Thanks man this helps.
Do you know anything about these in specific? They also run in background but I don't know their exact use.
com.android.smspush
Network Location (com.google.process.location)
Google One Time Init
Google Account Manager
Package Access Helper

com.android.smspush: i don't know what it does, but reading its name i think it has something to do with receiving sms (push, as in push notification and sms). I am not sure about that, and i haven't tried freezing to so i cant tell you for sure.
network location: it is the service that runs in order that apps can find your location using the network. for example when you check in on facebook. It finds your approximate location without gps. If you turn gps on, then you get an accurate location. Havent frozen it as i use apps with location services (such as yellow pages apps, airport apps and stuff that need to know my location).
google one time init: don't know what it does, i've frozen it (didn't see it before, so i forgot to mention it in the previous post)
google acount manager: very important. it handles your username and password to log in in google services such as the play store, the contacts sync etc. if you freeze it you can't open the play store app (for example).
package access helper: i am not sure about it. I've searched a lot on google but didn't find a definitive answer. I've read that it has to do with installing/uninstalling apps. I've tried once to freeze it but i got some force closes. So, leave it intact.
