Updating to 5.1. help needed! - Moto E Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey!
I'm currently on 4.4.4 with a custom recovery and rooted. I got the official Motorola 5.1 update yesterday. I want to know whether i need to flash the stock recovery and unroot before updating? Do i need to do anything else? like updating to 5.02 before updating to 5.1, cause i didn't get the 5.02 update, only the 5.1.
Thanks!

You don't need a 5.02 update, that's why Motorola announced they were skipping 5.0.2 official and going to 5.1
The soak test was 5.0.2 but only works on Indian retail versions (xt1022) of moto e and should not be flashed on other variants.
I think I've read that you need to be unrooted with stock recovery.......
Please don't take my work for it, its here on XDA that's where I read it.
You are lucky to get 5.1, UK is not getting the update at the moment, but I have 5.1 on my moto e via cm12.1.

If you have stock recovery and on rooted or non rooted stock rom, you will be able to update to Lollipop.

most probably u need the stock package as the OTA will check each and every file and will patch them so an unmodified stock is needed...

The more secury way is apply stock 4.4.4 to your phone via fastboot, and after this, apply the lollipop ota zip file.
I also am stuck on 4.4.2. What could be the reason I never got the update to 4.4.3 or 4.4.4? I didn't do anything to the phone at first when I got it. I checked for updates and it always said its up to date. It came brand new with boot loader unlocked and a custom recovery. How did my carrier block updates?

I tried it, and didn't realize I had to hold buttons in order for options to show up. Lol Do you think its just the recovery holding back updates?

you have 4.4.4 recovery and 4.4.2 rom in your phone? if so, you need to to apply entirely 4.4.4 rom via fastboot and after this you copy the lollipop soak test zip file in root internal memory.
To apply lollipop soak test you need to stock recovery and rom 4.4.4, bootloader unlocked is no problem.
How are you from? you need to download 4.4.4 rom and lollipop soak test from your country.

Update 5.1 India

Well after wandering here n there behind ROMs for a month or so im now looking for OTA update 5.1. As im in india and motorola has already announced it here so it can land anytime. As i told i was on custom ROMs and fairly i had custom recovery and unlocked bootloader, will i have an OTA or i need to do something with my device??
Im on stock rom now.
I asked same to motorola guys but they didnt seemed to know anything.
So i have one straight qs.
Will i be able to get OTA despite having unlocked bootloader, custom recovery and root?
You need stock ROM, stock recovery and a. Unroofed phone to receive OTA.
From Customer Support motorola
If You are unlocked your bootloader you can get OTA update !
If you are rooted your device you cant get OTA update.
So, Revert to Stock ROM, and Unroot your Device to Get OTA.

I don't think... so downgrade back to 4.4.4 root it then flash pre-rooted 509 firmware it's available in z3v Android Development.

no, you will have to flash back to 4.4.4, re-root, install recovery and flash the pre-rooted lollipop zip.
Am I able to keep my data? Its so annoying to redownload everything. I know there is an option on flashtool to keep your data but some people say it can corrupt things.

What bricks MOTO E ?

this might be a Question most Moto E users will have when they want to flash a new ROM.
i want to flash cm14/lineage OS. i want to know that can i directly flash the new ROM using TWRP? will it brick my phone?
i have a rooted Moto E xt1022 with stock ROM 4.4.4 with unlocked bootloader and TWRP installed.

so can i flash my stock 4.4.4 android to fully unroot, and then update to 5.1 lollipop with the OTA, and then root and directly flash the lineage rom? i heard that one needs to update to lollipop to update one's bootloader...
that would be the correct and safe process right?

Well for starters and device specific https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e/general/warning-downgrading-information-moto-e-t3062859
But there can be other reasons like flashing unstable, wrong roms recoveries kernels scripts etc..

Do you mean we can't downgrade the ROMs, 7.1 to 5.0 directly, so do we have to go 7.1 to 7.0 to 6.0 and then 5.1 and then 5.0?
No we can downgrade directly. But be careful, we shouldn't go to 4.4.2 we can go to lollipop or 4.4.4. I have tried it myself and went back to lineage too
