this might be a Question most Moto E users will have when they want to flash a new ROM.
i want to flash cm14/lineage OS. i want to know that can i directly flash the new ROM using TWRP? will it brick my phone?
i have a rooted Moto E xt1022 with stock ROM 4.4.4 with unlocked bootloader and TWRP installed.

so can i flash my stock 4.4.4 android to fully unroot, and then update to 5.1 lollipop with the OTA, and then root and directly flash the lineage rom? i heard that one needs to update to lollipop to update one's bootloader...
that would be the correct and safe process right?

Well for starters and device specific https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e/general/warning-downgrading-information-moto-e-t3062859
But there can be other reasons like flashing unstable, wrong roms recoveries kernels scripts etc..

Do you mean we can't downgrade the ROMs, 7.1 to 5.0 directly, so do we have to go 7.1 to 7.0 to 6.0 and then 5.1 and then 5.0?
No we can downgrade directly. But be careful, we shouldn't go to 4.4.2 we can go to lollipop or 4.4.4. I have tried it myself and went back to lineage too

I have a moto E dual Sim !! my phone is rooted with Cynaogen mod 11 installed!! now i cant install motoral service update from playstore to install Lollipop updates!
Rooted phones cannot survive the OTA's.
Don't even try to go for an OTA you would end bricking you phone.

You need to be on stock ROM to install stock updates. As simple as that.
You need to be on pure stock rom (no optimized or debloated) and you can recieve OTA (after ota update u cant downgrade to kitkat) so if u want easy just flah the flashable 5.0.2 update search in forum (this way you can downgrade)
P.S : why not u just flash CM12 as that has more features then Stock ROM and bug free now...

Either flash twrp via fastboot and flash CM12.
Or flash your stock KitKat and wait for LP OTA.
Its totally your choice if you want to remain on stock or continue with custom ROM.

Hardbrick only occures when u flash downgrade firmware via Fastboot, so if u dont want hardbrick. Flash the ROMs via TWRP recovery as its not flash Bootloader, download Flasheble ROMs and flash via recovery it wont hardback.

you can get it from here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e/general/index-moto-e-original-android-dev-roms-t3000181
. if for any reason the download link doesnt work then search in the general forum for 4.4.4 firmware.
I am running 'Resurrection remix' rom on my Mot E xt-1022. I want to install a kitkat 'custom rom'. Do I need to go through the downgrading process posted here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-e/general/safely-restore-to-stock-t3165344
or
I just need to flash the kitkat custom rom as we do normally?
The tutorial is for downgrading to stock Kitkat once you has updated to stock Lollipop. With custom ROM that only flash the boot and system partitions there is no need to follow that guide.
PS: I can hardly write in english.

to my knowledge yes you can flash your custom rom normally that is if it dosen't have any bugs .
but the link you posted is to downgrade to stock rom. if you want stock rom then yes you have to go though that process.
if you just need rom to flash and not bootloader download rom from http://motorola-condor.blogspot.in/p/xt-1022motorola-stock-firmware-romxt.html and flash it normally do this at your own risk i am not responsible for consequences

Thank you and @GSebas for the replies. Will try it to soon. The phone becomes so slow on lollipop and marshmallow. Kitkat is probably the best rom for low-end phones. But the inbuilt 4G ROM makes to look at custom ROMs.

You can flash any Kenzo rom. You just have to flash Kate firmware / modem afterwards. See here for instructions: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2566258&p=6&#r120

If you want to flash Nougat, you have to use Android 7 firmware. Just use the one by PsyMan. It works and won't lock your bootloader.
Flash the firmware, flash the ROM you want to use, flash GApps (Arm64, Android 7.1)

This one seems to be getting universal approval and seems fairly foolproof . Its written for LineageOS (Strix)

Also performance wise which one better? Stock 5.0.2|5.1.1|6.0.1??

Hi, I ve just downgraded to 5.1.1 coming from Los 14.1
Have been on 6.0 too and went back to experiment a OTA update (from LL to MM)
Have to say that 5.1.1 is fast and smooth, like no other. both 6 and 7.1.2 custom ROMs.
I will stay there since I don't find a new reason to upgrade...

Everything works as expected in 5.1.1 and that is very relaxing: wifi, bluetooth, motodisplay and notification, no forcecloses or crash, no random reboot.
Stock softwares, with last updates from PlayStore, are also very smooth.

Did you flashed all the system files?
Lockin the bootloader isn't necessary or rilevant in my opinion.
Last question.. which os where you at when firstly rooted the phone? Sometimes Android is hard to downgrade..
