Hey there,
see I know this is future talk, but is the Dell Tablet - which has amazing specs if you ask me - ever going to see the light of custom roms, maybe even Android M? Any idea? Honestly, I have no idea why this tablet is no big seller.

Intel doesn't seem to attract devs for some reason. Does your 7840 have a locked bootloader?

The latest 5.1.0 update for the 7840 has an unlockable bootloader.
The Asus ZenFone 2 (Same Intel Z3580 as the Dell 7840) has TWRP and alpha builds of CyanogenMod.
Looks like the days of no-devs-for-Intel are coming to an end (maybe... I hope).

It's still early days for Intel + Android but the 7840 is overpriced and unpopular. Maybe the next Venue will get some attention.

Yeah, for how nice looking it is, I really can't see why it wasn't more popular except because Dell did basically zero marketing for it. With a few well-timed ads and some product placement this thing could have been the new popular tablet.

After owning a n9, and messing with both the tab pro and the tab s and the shield, I don't think the v8 is that over priced. It's the best Android tablet on the market right now imo. The only downside is development and I can live with that because my v8 is purely for media consumption. If dell had a better reputation for updating and supporting their Android devices I think it would be more popular, a starting price of about $300 wouldn't hurt either.
So far I'm really impressed with this v8 and Dell's software support.

I agree, Intel and Dell need to be more forth coming if they ever plan on getting a device that devs will like to work with, Locked bootloaders, releasing old out of date tablets, then taking 6 months to update them, just isn't what most devs are looking for.
dell needs to stop dragging their feet and start popping out updates, intel needs to stop focusing on locking stuff down.
I doubt the 7840 will get much development, perhaps the next version dell releases, provided they release a current OS with the tablet, and quickly release the source code, and intel doesn't try to lock it down.
Price also plays a important factor, not many devs are willing to pay $400 for a kitkat device when other companies are releasing lollipop, dell needs to stop releasing out of date devices, then taking 6 months to update them.
I think had the tablet came out with lollipop priced around $200-$250 source code released, bootloader ready to be unlocked this tablet would have taken off, but it was over priced, came with kitkat, and locked down with no source code. Over time it was updated and so on by that time devs already got other devices.
The problem is that until the Zenfone2 came out no 3rd party was really actively working on porting to Intel, it wasn't until the past few months until cm even started porting for the nexus player.
There are a few groups now starting to port cm to a couple Intel devices but the problem is with a community so small the benefit is only for a few.
Having to rebase an existing device tree is alot of work so I'm hoping to consolidate the few active projects there are into a common core device tree with the hope that it will make it easier to port to new devices.

My question. At what point will I no longer be able to use the latest and greatest Android version? IE windows 7 isn't going to run on a windows 95 machine. When will my Vibrant be the windows 95 machine? From 95 to 7 might be to much a jump but you get my point.
Its already clear that this time is soon. With all this near field stuff that if I'm correct my vibrant can't do. And of course I only have one camera so all this video phone stuff isn't going to happen....
I also have read that google is going to slow down its releases. Will I be installing Android 2.5?
Just a question I dreamed up falling asleep last night, interesting to think about. I dread the day!
Thanks for all the work! Running Obsidian 4.2, I freaking love my phone. really. Its AWESOME. Came from a jailbroken, unlocked iPos 3g and omg did I hate it.
Thanks again.

Why isn't this in q&a? Anyways gingerbread requires a 1ghz processor. So you are good for that. As for further releases let me dust off my time machine. Considering the nexus s is virtually identical in specs to the vibrant aside from the ffc, I think we may be able to support past 2.3 but don't know.

You need to do some more research to get a better idea what Nexus S is and what the NFC chip does. This topic belongs in general for starters. Realistically there is no one who is going to have an exact answer although chances of you owning a new phone by the time your Vibrant stops getting updates is pretty high.
I'm sure we'll be able to get past 2.3 there's so many nods these days, that I'm sure we will be fine.

Why? These are hardware and driver related. What is the issue removing the drivers? Like the FFC mod just needed the drivers and implementation into the Rom. Or are you referring to what these do and Vibrant being outdated?
Thread moved to Q&A.
The issue we will meet first is not whether our hardware is up to the task, but whether we have a kernel. The original Nexus One is actually slated to get Android 2.3 before the Nexus S launch date and both the Nexus phones will go well beyond Android 3.0 because there will always be kernel source code available. Contrast that with the Vibrant where we have to rely on Samsung's good will to release a kernel. We'll probably get one for 2.3 (albeit several months if not a year from now) but I would not be surprised if 3.0 is out of the question. Once Samsung stops releasing kernels, it will be entirely in the hands of developers who will be working without source code.
Have those "previously suggested but also previously confirmed to be innacurate spec requirement rumors" now NOW official? If that makes sense. .. (?)

SWYPED from my SUPASONIC
Have no fear. As near as I can tell, the Nexus S is basically the same hardware as the Vibrant + FFC. Eugene tweeted that he plans to port 2.3 over to the Vibrant once the Nexus S source is released. If he can get it to work, I see no reason our vibrant's will not be able to be updated anytime the Nexus S is for the foreseeable future.
And its not necessarily Samsung that's causing the update issue. T-Mobile is pretty dang slow when it comes to releasing updates. I'm sure, if the Nexus S is supposed to be next in the line of Google dev phones, that Google has some kind of contract with Samsung about developing drivers for any new version of Android that gets released.
My G1 is running the latest and greatest.
There is NOT a minimum processor speed.
Our phones have incredible hardware.
Have no worries about the future.
Guys, I'm working on developing an AOSP ROM. I need your help in choosing a phone I can use for the testing. I was thinking of starting with a cheap Samsung Galaxy series phone since they have dual bootloaders (boot.bin and sbl.bin). Better safe than sorry, right? My work partner suggested we start off with a Vanilla Android phone, like an old LG. Can you guys recommend me one to proceed with? Is there a phone out there with Vanilla Google Android and possibly two bootloaders ?
Anyone?
c'mon guys !!
Most developers like the Nexus series phones since they are easy to unlock the bootloader and have a lot of other devs.
Thank you for replying But is the Samsung Galaxy series the only one in the Android universe with dual bootloaders?
Also, what phones run on Vanilla Android other than the Google Nexus series? I take it the old LGs do? If so, which ones?
Someone, please respond...
bump!
Someone please provide some input on this..
I REALLY gotta know this at the earliest so I can acquire the phone. Someone, please help out !!
not sure if this helps but the pantech burst is getting the ICS update shortly (they have it ready just having server issues trying to get it out today) its a cheep but badass att lte phone
I don't live in the USA. I need something available internationally. Also, it needs Vanilla Android. Is Google Nexus my only chance?

If your serious about development and testing pure vanilla Android is the way to go and the Google's Nexus line of phones and tablet it the way to go. You can easily compile AOSP for these devices, easily unlock the bootloader and root to flash custom ROM's. Also kernel sources are easily available, along with other great resources that will allow you to learn a lot about development.

I wouldn't go any lower then the nexus s, since that's the oldest pure Google device that officially supports compiling AOSP JB from source. Personally I'd pick up the galaxy nexus if you want something right now. If you can wait until around November (November 5th) it's rumored Google is launching several (Supposedly five new nexus devices) new nexus devices to celebrate androids 5th birthday

x86 code is in AOSP now the nexus player is a Intel device manufactured by Asus.
android-ia is Intel's open source project for tablet like devices that have a traditional UEFI.
android-x86 is a project for more PC based
I believe Dell , Acer, and a few other brands use an Intel reference design so Intel supply's them with a base image and they customize parts and such then the manufacture distribute the updates. So there damned by what ever Intel release to them.
clearly Intel's focus has been on Android 5.0.x and bay what ever based devices I have to assume having your chip in a nexus based devices is the launching point Intel is hoping will bring them into the mobile market so, I imagine they put a lot of their resources there.
4.4.2 is the highest version I have seen for clover view plus except the Asus line. I believe based on how often they get updates Asus must build their mage in house.
The V7 / V8 1st Gen I fear are stuck at 4.4.2 forever.
The V7 / V8 2nd Gen will probably get Lollipop before the first of the year or shortly after.
Being the 1st Gen V8 has an unlocked bootloader I figured someone would be trying to build lollipop for it by now.

Dell isn't interested in updates just sales, they could simply release their kernel source codes and unlock all boot loaders, to allow the community to modify and build their own ROMs, but that might hurt sales.

How does it hurt sales to release the code for older devices? There are plenty of people that have to have the latest and greatest around. Enough to cover the perceived loss of revenue.

Oh, that's what dell's tech say, they want a reason not to release the source so they say it hurts sales, so they don't have to release source.
In a way it's true it would hurt sales, as less people would buy a newer devices if they could upgrade their older device to latest android.
most people that want to upgrade to latest android want to do so without having to buy a new device.
If the only way people can get the latest version of android is to buy a new tablet, then naturally sales would decrease by releasing source code, allowing people to build the latest version of android on their device rather than making them buy a new device.

For those users that want 5.0 on their tablet, I see two possibilities.
1. Wait for Dell to release 5.0.
2. Setup a fund to buy a Dell V8, as 7 simply is out of the question.
3. Give the tablet to a dev or to someone who is willing and able to build you guys a usable rom.
If enough Dell V8 owners are interested the cost to each would be almost nothing.
The paying members get the rom first, as they are the investors, The dev or person agreeing to build the rom gets to keep the tablet, the rest of the community gets a rom in due time, those not wanting to wait can simply become an investor as well.
The tablet is less than $100 so, divide that between members, 200 members cost each member 50 cents. 100 members cost each member $1 and so on.

My problem with Dell and their lack of updates or worse, the updates they have pushed (kitkat) has many flaws to it. Heck, I'd be happy if they just fixed the kitkat version and got all the bugs out of it. (laggy, unable to read sd card, reboots etc..)
Now, if Dells argument is they wont update "older" units then I would have to disagree. I bought 2 Venue 8 (3830) at Office Depot only 2 months ago... I certainly wouldn't consider 2 months old..
My wife still uses her venue (rarely) but I am currently using my old nexus 7 for the time being... Too many bugs in kitkat have prevented me in using the venue as a daily driver.
Will keep my fingers crossed a dev is able to put together a nice stable custom rom for this as it would be rather nice...
My Dell Venue 3830 out performs newer versions of the same tablet. I love it. I have tried newer versions of the tablet, and have returned them favoring this 3830.
Would it be smart to start a bounty for someone to develop a lollipop based ROM for it?
Who else would be interested?
How does one go about starting a bounty?
Asus Zenphone 5 & 6 received Lollipop June 2015
I use the same Dell Venue 3830. The spec of our tablet is almost equals with Asus Zenphone 5 & 6 (Atom Z2580 2Ghz, 2GB RAM). Asus just announce upgrade for Zenphone 5-6. So we could expect XDA developers could port it to our Dell.
I certainly hope so, I love this little tablet. Quick, snappy, and beautiful.
Have you tried the ART runtime ? I always failed enabling it. Stuck in boot logo then restart to Dalvik

I meant the 3830 LOL. I will drop $20 or more on a ROM for this puppy. 4.4.4 at least, CM, Lollipop would be GREAT.
Would anyone be kind enough to add on 3840 for this CM? I'd literally appreciate it so damn much, thanks!
I hope you succeed, because seems that dell already forgot the 3830 tablet. I would like to offer my help but my knowledge about this stuff is pretty basic. It will be great if you were able to release android lollipop for this tablet.
I have absolutely no knowledge of even where to begin. However, I do have money to contribute to a person who can make a working complete, working ROM for the tablet.
Like it was said above, this was a case of bait and switch. This was the first version of the tablet, and had the best hardware. It was sold at a loss for a while, then boom "Upgrade", which had worse hardware and ran like ****e. I have a 3840, and no one in the family will use it. The damn thing is too slow even to load a Kindle book right after it had been factory reset.
Building a ROM for this will net the ROM builder a bit of cash and do a great service for the community.
not feeling any love, looks like no one cares about our poor pathetic tablets...
DELL really sucks doing this.... its very much like an Apple scam ... mine is the 3741 which supposedly has 8gb but after the android system with system apps and all you have around 3.5gb free.
then you cant even move apps to EXT-SD so good luck installing many large apps.

This is common for all tablets, no tablet or any android devices has the listed amount of space free.
16GB 32GB and so on don't have that much space free either.
As far as bounty for rom, posting here isn't going to get much exposure, unlikely this thread will even be seen by anyone that builds roms.
If there is enough people willing to fund this project, and buy a developer one of these tablets, then perhaps you can get a rom.
If it ever gets to that point, find a developer and ask him, how much would it take to get a custom rom.
Right now I can only think of one developer that is currently producing x86 cm12 roms. @nels83.
Seeing he is already making x86 cm12 roms for 3 x86 devices, he could add more if he had those devices.
@nels83 would be the person to contact once enough money is raised to buy him a tablet, or if someone has a spare tablet to give him.

What would be great is in the wait for a decent custom ROM such as Cyanogen or Paranoid, maybe someone out there could throw together a cleaned up, barebones custom ROM based off the current stock ROM but with all of the crapware thrown out and maybe some changes to improve the overall performance. This would be good for both 3830 and 3840 users and hopefully will make the wait for a CM or Paranoid (if it ever comes) a little shorter as atleast our tablets will run, decently.
The 3840 is in desperate need of a custom ROM. I see 3830 users also wanting it but to be honest, I'm sure they can stick it out with their 2GB of RAM. The 3840 is suffering dearly with only 1gig and is total hell running stock Android - so if there's a dev out there, priorities to the 3840 please. I've heard that the 3830 has decent performance.
I doubt you will ever seen a custom ROM for 3840.

@nels83 is probably the only dev that could, also the 3830 kernel source has finally been released, it was a big set back waiting over a year for kernel source.
I used the kernel source to build myself a custom kernel and when time allows I will start back working on my asop rom for my 3830. I stopped working on it due to no source code.
My ROM will only be for my personal use, as I have no desire to continuously update a rom.
@nels83 is the best choice for building a community ROM, if he chooses to.

Who said you have to continuously update it? As long as most of the functions work to a decent standard and it is a solid ROM, then I am sure the community will be more than happy with it.
Also, 3840 users: http://forum.xda-developers.com/dell-venue/development/v8-3840-lollipop-rom-bounty-t3185076

F*ck Asus. Was waiting for Oreo update for my ultra.
Well this surely pisses me off!
I'm officially learning how to build Android for our phone. I only have a few years coding experience, but I'm going to give it my all. Wish me luck boys.

all the best-good luck!
while i had this device, I tried to port miui eu (deodexed) from the mi max 2 pro (same processor, resolution, graphics) but could only get to mi boot animation. Not many resources out there (mostly old and understand porting is a very case-by-case task)
might get interested in the device again if some rom development starts. Weird as it has a qcom processor but all interest is in samsung, sony, and even some smaller Chinese brands but not this one. (6.8 screen maybe) admit i have very little knowledge if any on development but tried it anyway
So that certainly means kiss off Android p. Asus definitely doesn't mind stepping on their own crank. Such a great / fast device, but it was almost abandoned from the first few months.

Well custom rom/kernel development for this device was pathetic enough now the ****ty people at asustek decided
not to update the ultra to oreo. They just updated zenfone deluxe and posted @ zentalk fourms that ultra will not be getting the oreo. Reasoing : in order to ensure the stability of ZU680KL system and user's best experience,
the company finally decided not to plan further software update to Android 8.0 system which
caused inconvenience. We are very sorry thank you for your ASUS product. Support . Well i request u all to send email or contact the asustek in anyway and make them to update the ultra to oreo . What a shame. Its one of the better devices i have owned screenshot of conversation is attached. :crying::crying:

Boycotting Asus pissed off...
What about rumors that Zenfone3 Ultra at last will get 8.1Oreo upgrade? Lot's messages everywhere around Jan 3rd 2019 and no word from ASUS.
Any clues?
