I have a S4 i545 for Verizon. It was on 4.2.2 rooted and I upgraded using Fireflash with I545_OC1_Stock_DeOdexed_ROMwNK4_BL.zip. Everything seemed fine so I was using Titanium back up to remove the bloatware and then my battery died. When I charged it and booted up it got to the Verizon screen and hung there. I reset and tried several more times. I tried to use odin and flash a stock 4.2.2 ROM SCH-I545_VZW_1_20140330160240_yni63xq6zh and I also tried a 4.4.2 rom. Odin gave a an error and failed. I then tried going into the boot loader and flash the I545_OC1_Stock_DeOdexed_ROMwNK4_BL.zip also. Not sure if this was foolish or not but when I booted up I got to a black screen and there was a voice talking, maybe some sort of app that was running, but I couldn't do anything.
Right now when I turn on the phone it says firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again. I tried connecting it to my computer and opening kies but it doesn't find it. If anyone can point me in the right direction on how to unbrick my S4 I would appreciate it. I know I screwed up.
as long as you can access ODIN you can unbrick. since your on 4.4.2 get the original rom and install. re root and install your rom of choice. from there if you have a previous backup in titanium you can restore

I was on 4.2.2. I tried downloading the original ROM for this but it didn't work in Odin.
Problem is I can't get into download mode now, or recovery mode even. It's just at that screen I mentioned above. So Odin isn't recognizing my phone.

so if you hold down VOL- and power it doesn't go into download mode?
It won't be recognized in Odin until you get back to download mode. - in Odin then you'd want to flash the PIT file and the ROM you need.
The only other way to fix would be to get ahold of a copy of Verizon's Software Upgrade Assistant/Software Recovery Assistant, which looks like someone has uploaded here:

The Software Recovery Assistant should fix it if nothing else does, I have used it before.
No when I turn it on it goes straight to the screen I mention with a yellow triangle and it does the same if I hold all the buttons down like you normally would to get in recovery.
I assume a battery pull didn't help. Since you have MDK, it MIGHT be worth it to get the JTAG dongle, which will boot the phone into download mode. It is about 3 bucks.
I tried installing in windows xp, windows 7 and windows 8 with no luck. I clicked the exe and it does nothing. I then tried installing on a MAC. It installed but when I went to run it the software opened for 1 second and then close with an error software closed unexpectedly. The I updated the software on the MAC and the software opened but the second I plugged in the phone it gave the same error. The MAC did find the phone though but windows did not.

Just plug the phone (on that screen) into your PC and see if it shows up in Odin.
If not, pull the battery, and hold the volume down and power buttons as you put the battery back in. Then choose Continue.
Did you read my post? I have done that. My phone is hard bricked. I can't get into recovery mode and therefore I can't get into download mode so therefore odin won't find my phone.

Which ROM did you flash, link?
Ahhh. The linked version of the Verizon Software Upgrade Assistant doesn't work. Sorry about that.

Per npjohnson advice I was able to get the phone into download mode. I misread your post at first so sorry about that. Now I need to figure out how to fix this. I flashed Lollipop originally so does that mean I can't actually go back to 4.2.2 using a stock ROM? Can someone point me to a ROM I should try to flash since the so called stock ROM's I have tried are failing in Odin.

I was rooted and then I flashed I545_OC1_Stock_DeOdexed_ROMwNK4_BL which I think is android 5.0.1. I used flashfire.

Probably should try the full factory image linked here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...pment/odin-i545vrugoc1-factory-image-t3160125
That will put you on 5.0.1 OC1 including bootloader. You'll then root with Kingroot, use Super-sume to replace Kingroot with SuperSu and then you can use the NON-MDK ROM with FlashFire. (odex, or deodex if you want to use xposed modules.

I'm trying to return to stock on my Verizon Note 2. I'm currently on AOKP 4.2.2 and have TWRP. I tried to use the Odin method shown by Adam but my phone is not being seen via USB. I've tried to uninstall all drivers and reinstall. Tried again by using Kies as suggested by many.
Can I return to stock just by using TWRP? Are there steps or a walk through on how to do this? Links? I'm thinking I could go into TWRP, wipe the cache, delvik cache, and then factory reset. Then install, "flash" a update.zip and return to stock. Would this work or get stuck?
Also, not sure where to get the update.zip I'd need. I have the OTA stock downloaded from Adam tutorial...not the "alternate" but it's only one file. Would I just zip that, rename to update.zip and try to flash?
Please help!! Again I'm unable to do this through usb plug in so I really need another route.

I read through that one too. Tried all of that. ODIN will not work. My phone is not being detected through USB. Again i've tried all the reinstalls of the drivers etc.... Tried different original cords. nothing.
I need a way to return to stock through my device. Maybe load to the external sd and flash. Can this be done?

Are u sure usb debugging is on?, or try going back to a tw rom before using odin, i also read that kies has to be removed from comuter, and phone before trying this, i had problem originally, manually installed drivers, and went to device manager and checked operation, you also have to be in odin mode on phone( power,home,down at same time, as that way it is in download mode.

Tried all of this as well. I installed kies and tried that route as some were saying the drivers may work through that method. They didn't so I tried uninstalling. I was in DL "odin" mode when trying to run odin also.

My phone was a trade off for a iPhone 5.. Best move ever but the last owner had somewhat messed up the phone modding it. I did a full wipe and the previous owner had never done any backups. I wanted to start fresh. All that being said I wanted to start back fresh at stock and then do any modding that I preferred from a new state.
I just flashed MeanBean after reading back through the posts to my question. I realized I had not tried using odin while on a TW based ROM.

I too am having issues with my Note II not being recognized by Odin on my PC. I know my drivers are installed and I have a good connection with my USB cable/port since when I plug in my phone when powered on, I can see the phone and card just fine. However, when going into Download mode and running Odin 3.07, Odin isn't seeing my phone.
I discovered this while looking into another situation from another thread. While I'm not currently attempting to return to stock and aren't overly concerned about returning to stock since I could probably do it with Mobile Odin if push comes to shove. I am concerned, however, that if I'm unable to use MO and my phone isn't being recognized by Odin from my PC then I might be up the proverbial creek with a paddle.

Mobile Odin Pro did the trick. It incorporated root saver so I didn't loose root when I returned to stock. Great advice!! Now I can start fresh and not have to worry about the mess I had from the trade.

Glad it worked. And as an added bonus now I know if I do ever have problems and dont feel like spending the time to figure it out, I can just use mobile odin.

I thought I would come here because I have tried all other options besides going to Bestbuy. My Samsung Galaxy S4 model SCH-I545 is currently without an operating system for it seems in the Odin process to flash it back to stock it failed and now I am in quite the bind. I cannot access the stock recovery mode or boot normally. Whenever I boot my phone I get the message "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again". I'm kinda stuck at this point help would be much appreciated
I can still access Odin mode and the computer still recognizes my phone so that is a plus

What did you do to fix it, specifically?
All, I am having an issue very similar to this, I'm on MJ7 and have the developers unlocked phone. Even thought the bootloader is unlocked the root functionality is not enabled. In trying to achieve root through flashing a file (it failed because of signiture validation error it went into a boot mode where it sounds like it is booting normally but there is no visual indicators and the LED light is a pulsing blue color (don't know what that means). Does anyone know where i can find an original factory firmware file and instructions to flash it successfully? I noticed there are several people in these forums who say they have had luck with a couple of the restore methods yet none have succeeded for me. If this is a developers edition why is the bootloader unlocked but not rooted? Thanks for any help you might be.

I have a gs4 was on me7 running hyperdrive 9.1. Hyperdrive had been bugging me to update for months, so I finally did. I had installed 9.1 on my stock rom slot so I wiped and tried to update to rls 15 of hyperdrive. I got a black screen with a pulsing blue led. so I wiped and tried to go to rls 14 same thing. I wiped and created a new rom slot installed rls 15 and got stuck in boot loop. Rls 14 did the same thing here. Then I tried to restore my stock rooted back up and just call it a day, but it didn't work everytime I tried it said failed. So then I went to Odin and tried to flash the stock firmware, being very cautious to pick the verizon one every time. I would say I have downloaded three separate firmware files with no luck even tried a one click stock restore with no luck. Please if you have any thoughts. I just need my phone to work.

Thanks for the reply but I have already solved the problem.
It wasn't that I couldn't follow directions. My **** was soft bricked.
After hours (26 to be exact) of scouring the forums, I finally found a combo that worked.
For any one else having this problem I posted steps to fix it here

After I did that my wifi was stuck on the dull green light but I read on a forum on how to fix that by going into the system and deleting one of the wifi files. After I did that everything worked fine for a few days! Then I went out of state and when I got on the airplane my phone was put on airplane mode, by the time I landed and took off airplane mode wifi wouldn't work at all. I tried to do the same thing I did earlier but it didn't work. Matter of fact, i cannot even find that file anymore Wifi will no longer even go dull green, i can hit it as many times as I want and it will stay in the off position. I thought if I flashed a custom rom it would restart the wifi, so I looked up how to install cyanogenmod and followed the YouTube vid from wwjoshdew (30minute). I didn't get through the whole thing because when my phone restarted it had an unlocked padlock at the bottom of the Samsung start up logo and when it went into recovery mode it came up with a yellow triangle saying that system software is not authorized by Verizon wireless. I can boot it up normally or I can go into download mode but I can't access recovery mode meaning I cannot do a factory reset. I took it to Verizon and they said they couldn't help me cuz I void the warranty. If anyone could please help me get my phone back to normal I would appreciate it so much! Thank you!

Sooooo.... you soft bricked your phone by flashing an unsupported ROM on your particular firmware. Cynanogenmod or ANY OTHER pure AOSP Rom is not compatible with firmwares later than MDK. Don't do that again.
You need to flash one of these http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2735172 in Odin. Instructions are in the thread. You are going to be downgrading back to NC5 (the firmware version before NG6). This may fix your wifi issues as well.

Thanks so much for the reply. I have downloaded the full wipe and have unzipped it. When i try to put it in Odin it says "md5 error! Binary is invalid" i cannot continue to start the process because of this.

Download the file zip again and check the md5. You may have a bad download.

Thanks so much for everything. I got it passed in Odin and everything is working this far . One last question, will I be able to root without it messing up again? Id love to have my phone rooted but if it means it wont work while rooted i would rather have it just be able to work regularly

Towelroot.com will work for you as far as root goes as long as you stay on NC5 firmware. Just download the APK, install it and go into the app to "make it rain"...profit.

I tried to flash an Android 5.0 ROM earlier, and my phone was only booting to the stock recovery (Safestrap was installed but I did a factory reset). Now, if the phone was turned off by removing the battery, it won't turn on when I hold the power button, or attempt to go into download/recovery mode. Nothing happens. If I plug it in, I can use whatever button combinations as normal. However, I don't think I can get to recovery mode. Both volume down/power and volume down/power/home enter download mode to the phone. I tried to flash a stock ROM in Odin, but it failed. Otherwise, it shows a screen that says " Firmware Upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again" And when I open kies, it just says "connecting" for an extremely long time until it eventually says "Device not responding" and I can't do anything. I've tried a few different things so far but flashing nothing in odin has worked. Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Here's the issue: since you have safestrap installed that means you're on the new bootloader. We cannot install anything other than TW based roms from nothing newer than nc5 base. If you can get into download mode, you'll need to flash the full wipe nc5 tar file through Odin. That will get you back on stock and you can re-root from there.

Crap. You're right. I completely forgot about that last night. I was getting frustrated with Hyperdrive because when I was trying to install version 20, the WiFi would never work no matter which modules.zip I flashed.
I got fed up and just wanted to flash something else and I did this without even thinking about it... I can get the phone into download mode, but when I try to flash this in odin, it fails.
I saw someone with the same screen as me with a Note 2 and someone said something about flashing a PIT file or something like that? I think I'm going to look into that next, hopefully I can find some useful links.

Sorry I didn't see this post at first. The file I'm using in Odin is mentioned in the above post. Before I had done anything, I was successfully using Hyperdrive 17.something. I did a factory reset, flashed the Hyperdrive 20 rom, flashed the modules.zip (I used like 3 or 4 different ones and none of them got WiFi to work) and rebooted and let the phone sit for 10 minutes, and when I would try to toggle WiFi, it wouldn't work. To make things worse, every time, when I rebooted, SafeStrap wouldn't load. So I had to go back to the ROM and install Towelroot and root the phone again, then install safestrap and install the recovery again and then I could boot to it. But I could never get the WiFi to work a single time.

Thanks for this, but right now I need to be more concerned with actually getting to Safestrap... or stock touchwiz for that matter. Hopefully this will work if I manage to fix the phone.

Using the Full Wipe method on that link, I was able to resolve the problem and at least get back to a working phone. From here I'll use towelroot to root and install safestrap and then install hyperdrive 20 with those modules you linked. To be more specific for anyone reading years from now with the same problem as me, I used odin 1.85 (though many versions work) with the pit file provided from that link with "re=partition, auto reboot and f. reset time" checked in the options. At first, I was having some trouble, but I think it was because the phone had low battery. I plugged it in for a bit, booted it up, and am setting it up right now. Thanks for the help everyone, it's much appreciated. I very much hope that the modules you linked work for me, because if they don't, I have no idea what ROM to use.
I was reading a thread last night where someone listed all of the ROMS working with SafeStrap, but it was from like 2 years ago and almost all of the ROMs had been abandoned.... Is there a more updated list of options? Or just something to look for to make sure a ROM will work right away?

So right now things aren't going as smoothly as I would've hoped.... The first time I flashed Hyperdrive and then that modules zip you linked, and the phone got stuck on the Samsung custom screen in some sort of loop. I reset it with odin and just the PDA from the link from before, and I then installed towelroot and safestrap again then flashed hyperdrive and modules and now I'm stuck on the hyperdrive red screen... It's just the boot animation and nothing else. When I take out the battery, the power button does nothing if the phone is not plugged in. When I plug the phone in and hold down the power button, it just shows an empty battery with a loading icon in the middle. I can't do anything else.... I'm going to reset it again now and maybe try installing this echoe rom.... Are you talking about this?

With EchoeRom, where do I find the signal bar fix? Is the wifi fix the thing you linked already? or is it separate from modules zip?

Sorry! I had started this reply earlier in the morning then got busy with work. The link for the signal bar fix is in the OP from the forum you found by jds. It's down by the link for v26. I sent you the wifi fix that works for me. If you're going to use v39.1, you will need jrkruse's nk2 patch found here:

No need to apologize!! Your job isn't to monitor me, and I can't thank you enough for all the help. I'm going to give this a shot at some point today, hopefully it'll work. I'll comment back in the thread whatever happens... As you can probably tell, I typically have horrible luck with these things.
So I have had the same issue as the OP after trying to flash to a 5.0 ROM, but my issue is still ongoing, as when I try to flash the stock ROM from this link I get the error that it failed in Odin.

Are you flashing the full wipe? Good download? Check MD5? Using the cable that came with the phone? Try a different USB port?

Well the OP said he did the wipe with that link I listed, and I would assume it's a good link. I am flashing the full wipe with the PIT file, using the cable that came with the phone, and I have tried using a different USB port. I have tried 3 different MD5 files as well and still have had no luck.
Edit (2:13 PM Eastern): Had the wrong file after some digging, and got the NC5 instead of the MK2. Phone is booting normally. Thanks for the help.
I was a fool and flashed TWRP without using Odin. This is my first Samsung that I have attempted to root. Keeps trying to boot recovery. Any advice?
Could please provide some more details? It sounds like you flashed a custom recovery using the stock recovery. However, if you know your last firmware version, i.e. NH7, NK4, or OC5 you should be able to flash a stock image using Odin.
All I know it was running 4.4.2. I flashed with rom toolbox. I know, big mistake.

Running 4.4.2 boot looping " recovery booting....
Recovery is not SEANDROID enforcing
Set warranty bit : recovery
I would just flash a Nk4 or OC5 image in Odin, then use Odin to Flash TWRP.

I cannot get into Odin on the device itself, will the computer pick it up?
Odin is a PC software to flash images onto devices. Mobile Odin works for somethings but I personally have never used it so I can't say much on the subject.
You need you to get Odin on your PC, make sure you have downloaded the proper images for the device. Then open Odin and where you see the PDA slot, click browse then find where you saved the image and click. Next, boot into download mode, via hold volume down, home button, and power, then plug a usb cable from your PC and wait for all the drivers need, you may need to download them and install them before you can continue. Then you can flash the image.
This is a basic Odin procedure but before you do anything else search for Odin here on XDA and read everything. I can't stress this enough.

Pull battery then reinstall the battery. Now boot into download mode and use the odin program on your computer to flash the custom recovery.
I am not at my PC right now so to save a lot of typing, go to rom flashing basics in the general section. Or click on rom flashing basics in my signature.

okay, I guess I am missing something. I've read and read and read over and again. I AM STUCK IN A BOOT LOOP. I CANNOT GET INTO DOWNLOAD MODE. THIS IS WHAT I'VE ALREADY SAID. This is all the device will do over and over again. Read my previous posts to to read what it says

I have read you're posts and I understand what a bootloop is. Also you haven't mentioned you can't get into download mode. Have you tried power cycling the device? I know you're getting frustrated but outside of give you the help I have and jimz, I or no one else can do anything more.

Okay I hard power cycled it and it finally let in download mode. Thank you. Flashing NK4 now. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the help
Okay it is now up and running. Just running 4.4.4 instead of 4.4.2. I guess I'll download the correct image and try again.
No worries I know how frustrating it can be when yiu do something and it goes wrong on a new device.
