Most of the time my tablet has no screen lock as I use it at home. I put a pin lock on it while I was out but now I cannot take it off, the option to have no lock at all it greyed out and says it's been disabled by the administrator. How do I reactivate it please?

Sorry, I have just seen this has been answered before. I have cleared the credentials and it's fine now. What does that do though?

Kind of like having the pass code locked in a secure place by an administrator, the only way, as you found out, to clear it is by clearing credentials which releases the pass code from the safe so you can remove it

Hello everyone.
Today I left my phone (galaxy S2) in my cousin's hand, and he tried to unclock my screen lock pattern. After too many attempts, my phone got lcoked and it asked me to sign in using my google account. I did so, and the phone got unlocked.
But when I press the lock button, or the phone gets locked automatically and I press the lock button to unlock it, the "too many pattern attempts" screen comes back again. Also my sim card is not being detected even though its there.
I have tried rebooting the phone, disabling the screen lock patten in security settings, disabling google account. Nothing has helped so far!
When you disabled the screen lock setting, what happens? You could try booting into recovery and wiping cache. If that doesn't work, then you'll probably have to factory reset.
When I disable it, nothing happens, as in it shows that it is disabled on the security settings. But when I press the lock button, the too many attempts screens comes back again. I tried a fctory reset too. Its still there! This is so frustrating!
Flashing a new rom should do the trick.
No you don't have to Flash
Try this please:
It was all about this "Two-Step Verification" security of google!
I tried everything... and I mean EVERYTHING (except flashing my XooM), but at the edge of giving up, I signed into my google account and issued an "Application Specific Password" for Xoom from my Google account.
I used my [email protected] with that Application Specific Password and it worked. (do not enter spaces in the password)
There is one solution
Hello,
I had similar problem with my Motorola Xoom WiFi. My friends was playing with my tablet and they was trying to guess my login pattern. Unfortunately sign in via Google account did not worked and WiFi network was turned off. So I was looking for way how to unlock it without root access.
Finally I found it. I wrote an application which turns on WiFi. It is quite simple. There is one requirement, you have to have enabled debuge mode. After installing app via IDE (eg. Eclipse) WiFi is connected to known network and you can log in with your Google account. There is also possibility to set network parameters in app code before compilation.
I hope this helps someone with this problem. At the end I want apologize for my poor english

Sometimes simple is best. If you saved the rom, go into recovery and restore the saved rom.
For Rooted Devices.
I have a rooted Galaxy S4 Developer Edition Device running I545OYUFNC5 KitKat and I have FoxFi installed. As much as I enjoy FoxFi, I hate using Pins, Passwords and Patterns for my lockscreen. I know there is a way around this (as per the FoxFi app in the Google Play Store) by entering your Pin, Password or Pattern incorrectly a few times and then entering your Google account password, but I found another way which seems to work on my device.
As I stated, I have FoxFi installed. Upon first boot of FoxFi it installs a VPN certificate. This can be viewed under System Settings->More->Credential Storage->Trusted Credentials ->User. After running FoxFi a few times I kept receiving the "Network may be monitored" warning in my status bar.
Following this guide, Foxfi now appears as a System Certificate and I was able to then set my Unlock method back to Swipe. I have never been bothered to set a PIN, Pattern or Password again.
Before you move the certificate, however, take note of the name and date associated with the file in case you ever wish to remove it in the future.
I would think that this would work on other verserion of Android as well (i.e. 4.3, 4.4.3, etc). Just an FYI to anyone would like to take advantage of this.

If it's rooted why even bother with FoxFi???

Just an option. Personally, I favor FoxFi for what I feel is ease of installation and use.

I guess you have to be rooted to see that directory where the certificate resides. I have an unrooted S5 and I cannot see those cert files in order to move them.
I am having to "CLEAR CREDENTIALS" reset to SWIPE (remove PIN security). If I want to use HOTSPOT again, FOXFI reinstalls the certificate and forces me to restore PIN or password security.
FOXFI's site says:
"In order to skip the mobile hotspot plan (an extra $20/month) FoxFi needs to install a certificate to bypass the carrier blockage. A certificate installation is considered "security changes" on your phone, and Android system requires a screen lock if *any* security changes is made. Here are possible ways to get rid of the Lock Screen if you don't use one:
If your phone runs Android 4.3 or below, it should support the following way to remove the lock screen while keeping the certificate: set a PATTERN lock (can not be PIN lock) and try to unlock the phone with a "bad pattern" for 5-10 times, it will show you an error message, close the message and on the lock screen you should see a "Forgot Pattern?" link somewhere on the screen. Select it and enter your Android email/password. After these steps the screen lock will be removed.
If your phone runs Android 4.4 (KitKat) or above, please do the followings: first make sure the FoxFi Certificate is not installed (if you have already installed it please go to phone Security Settings and select "Clear Credentials"), now turn on FoxFi and it will display a message box that says "Name the certificate", below it there is a drop-down named "Credential use" which is set to "VPN and apps". Please tap this drop-down and change it to "Wi-Fi". If you continue it will still require you to set a Screen Lock, just do so. After the certificate is installed, you can go back to phone's Screen Lock settings and it will allow you to change it to "None" or "Pattern".
However if you no longer need to use FoxFi, simply go to phone's Security Settings and select Clear Credentials. This will remove the FoxFi certificate (it will NOT remove any other stocked certificates). After that you will be able to set Lock Screen to "None" in phone settings."
Closed at OP request.
I just recently got the 5.0.2 update and have a couple of questions.
1. When I set up a pattern lock, then decided I didn't need it, I went to change it back to swipe unlock, only to find it grayed out and the message "Disabled by administrator, encryption policy or credential storage"
Tried looking through any settings I could find that related to those reasons but could find nothing that seemed to relate to resetting swipe unlock as an option. Has anyone encountered this or know how to fix it?
2, So I decided to set up Smart Lock with my home as a trusted location. But the device is still locked every time I turn it on, even though the Smart Lock setting shows my tablet at home, right in the middle of the radius of dots it says is the trusted location and I still have to go through the 2 step process of swiping on the main lock screen with the notifications on, then entering the security pattern on a separate screen then finally getting into the home screen.
Any ideas on this one?
And when lollipop comes to the z3 phone is pattern unlocking going to be a 2 step process on that as well?
Regards for any information on these questions.

Do you have an exchange account setup? I know my work email server has restrictions where I have to have a screen lock.

Currently having the same issue. Tried deactivating all device administrator but still could not revert back to swipe unlock
www dot reddit.com/r/Nexus5/comments/2mptwm/lollipop_can_not_disable_passwordpattern_to_unlock/
Does anyone know if deleting credential storage will result in any adverse effect?
Well still no joy, although Smart Lock did recognize my location once, but then 10 minutes later it wasn't working again.
And no Spectre51, I don't have an exchange account set up.
Do you have anything under Settings->Security->Device Administrators? I just removed my outlook/exchange account and had the same issue but under device administrators outlook device policy was still checked. Unchecked that and I could change it to swipe.
I know you said you don't have an exchange account but maybe something else in there is still enabled causing the issue.

Only thing turned on under device administrators was Protection by myXperia, turned that off, no change.
so with the update to MM I'm finally able to use the fingerprint unlock with a case, but either I missed something or it's still somewhat annoying to use. after booting up I need to enter a password, which I'm okay with, however after using my device for a bit and letting it go to lock there are times where I need to re-enter my password instead of the fingerprint and this is without rebooting. is this normal?
EDIT: so I came across a few places that mention the use of Nova Launcher or 3rd party lockscreen apps... I don't have any of the latter, but I do have Nova Launcher except I'm not using that to lock my screen. am I missing something here?
It will do that I believe as a default. You can set up a smart place, like home, on your person, whatever, and it won't lock with a password. I use it on mine for the house, and certain devices it connects to.

I believe there may be an issue now... I just unlocked my device using the fingerprint and I have my device set to lock after 10 minutes. Less than 10 minutes after my screen goes off I wake up my device with a double tap and it's locked, prompting for a password!
Hi,
I am using fingerprint sensor and smart unlock but several times a day and every morning the phone is manually locked and I have to enter my pin again. Is there a setting I am missing here?
same here. also it keeps asking pin through the day!
also I'd appreciate if I won't need to confirm pin once is entered correctly (just numbers then unlock instantly)

Is it that your phone is rebooting? There have been people reporting random reboots with their devices ..

Thats true, the extra confirming is annoying as hell...I think smart lock introduced this issue, so I will try to turn it off for now...

I have not noticed any reboots yet but I dont think that the problem. I still see notifications on the lock screen. I believe that would not be the case if the phone rebooted.

Smart lock relocks after 4 hours of inactivity and apparently defaults to PIN or Pattern, not FP.

Doesn't seem to matter whether it's active or inactive. It seems to re-lock and require a PIN every 4 hours.
Extremely annoying. SmartLock on my Samsung phone didn't behave like that.
Disabling smart lock fixed it for me, make sure are smart lock triggers are gone

So now it is always locked and the FP is the default? I like having it unlocked at Trusted Places for 4 hours better.

I might just try this. I used smartlock on my Galaxy s20 FE because the fingerprint sensor was way down at the bottom and was difficult to reach, so I would just press the power button and swipe up on the screen.
However, I discovered with the Pixel 6, that when it's smart locked, if you just touch the fingerprint sensor icon, it turns on the screen and opens the phone. (without it actually triggering the fingerprint sensor) No pressing the power button or swiping required.
So I've started getting into the habit of just pressing the fingerprint icon anyway, even when it's unlocked with smartlock. So, as long as the fingerprint sensor is reliable enough, I don't really need the smart lock. I would be doing the same motion to unlock it with the fingerprint. (Although it will be a little slower and possibly a bit more unreliable)
Well, I don't think it's smartlock related. I turned off smartlock a half hour ago and used the fingerprint sensor to unlock it several times since then, and then a couple of minutes ago, it forced me to enter the PIN. Almost exactly 4 hours after the last time I had to enter a PIN.
I was wondering exactly the same... it's a weird behavior.
I think it may be a 'feature'. A fingerprint is considered somewhat less secure by Google. Ironic, given on a P6 it seems to lock folk out a lot of the time!

As you say, annoying though.

Did you reboot the phone after changing the smartlock setting? Perhaps the phone has held onto that setting in memory.
i am having the same nightmare here. Considering i am wearing gloves most of the time, i need to usesmart unlock. but then every few hours i need to type pin, plus i need to press entre. it really breaks flow here

Smart lock resets every four hours, which requires you to enter your PIN to unlock for another four hours.
Confirming a pin makes it more secure, as now the number of digits in your pin is also hidden. In theory, this would make a 4 digit as secure a as 10 digit one as a potential thief would not know which to try.
