I had this problem running miui, cm7, and now I'm on unnammed. I've used all the modems and still nothing helps. I thought unnammed didn't have this problem? To fix it I haft to flip to airplane mode and back, then its fixed.
Sorry if this has been asked. I'm on taptalk on my phone and I don't know how to search with it

Could be APN settings. I don't know them off hand, but they are listed in post 2 of the miui thread.
If it happens on multiple ROMs it could also be a bad SIM card. Does it do it on pure stock? If so, try a new SIM card.

ok, thanks. ill look them up. this issue is making me want to switch back to my iphone, but hopefully this will fix it cause i like android, just this is getting old
Are you talking about wifi or 3g?
Are you using any battery saving apps like Juice Defender?

This. I haven't seen this issue reported often, and in the past, it's turned out to be an app interfering with the connection. If not, it's likely an apn issue.

I've had the same thing happen to me on other AOSP roms too. On both the SGS2 and my captivate.
I just switched to iscrewed to see if the prob is still there. Its hard to reproduce the bug, but it happens when i go from either:
1. being connected to wifi for a long time and then leaving that area, mobile data doesnt turn back on
2. being in a bad service area for a long time, and then leaving it, mobile data doesnt turn back on.
The worst thing about it is i use google voice for texts, and thats usually how i can tell that it cut out, because i stop getting texts from people.
I love android and google, but honestly if problems like this dont get ironed out, then as long as the next iphone has a decent size screen im probably switching over.
FYI this has occurred when i had the bare minimum installed on my phone, and i never use any ridiculous battery saving apps.

Have you tried a new SIM card? My problem was similar, and followed me from one phone to another as you describe. New SIM card fixed it right away.

Wow, i didn't even consider that.
I will be trying and will report back. If this fixes it i will owe you my life!
I might have to switch back to cm7 just to name sure it's the Sim card that's causing it.

ill try this out tomorrow. just now when checking my email i had to turn on airplane mode and back off to get data to work.
also, i tried the apn settings on the first page of the miui thread and it didnt work. i tried those settings on miui, wiui, cm7, and unnammed but they all made it so that my internet didnt work at all.
so just to clarify, i shouldnt haft to change apn settings and my phone shouldnt be doing this on non stck roms, right? sim is likely the problem? this has gotten really old really quick and its embarrassing when im trying to show my friends something but my phone isnt working.
Your phone should work fine on any ROM you find here. Mine does. I never have to play with APNs, even on miui. I never have to play with airplane mode or power cycle. But, when my SIM was bad I would drop data connectivity all the time. Calls would fail (outbound only), and other glitchy reception issues. Sometimes airplane mode fixed it, sometimes power cycle, sometimes airplane mode on, power cycle, and all times it was temporary. Its worth a try, shouldn't cost anything to get a new SIM. If they give you trouble at the store just tell them you called 611 and they told you to go in for a new one. If that doesn't fix it go warranty route for a new phone.

Those APN settings have worked fine for me on both CM7 and every Sammy ROM I've used. I always have (unrelated) problems with MIUI, so I can't verify that one.
So i went today and got a new SIM. Its been about 9 hours, but no problems yet. Time will tell if it works, but im willing to bet that was the problem, and this is why.
When i went to get my sim, the guy there told me that when ATT started rolling out 4g phones (which includes 3.5g) many employees had trouble with their data switching on and off until they switched their sim cards.
Then i started thinking to myself - I've had the problem about as long as I had my SGS2, and only had the problem with AOSP roms on my captivate - then i made the connection.
When i used a stock, or stock based rom on my captivate, i had no problems. The second i used an international ROM, or an AOSP rom is when i would have the issues. What is the difference between the roms............. The ATT rom doesnt have hspa+ enabled, so using my old "3g" sim card i was fine. No 3.5g to connect to to cause problems. CM and international Roms would use that new 3.5g network and would then screw up.
That is my theory anyway, and if it turns out true it would have solved one of my biggest annoyances with android. (or at least my android experience)
fingers crossed
i too went in and got a new sim. my phone service actually quit working before going in. id get calls and i could hear them but they couldnt hear me. i replaced the sim and all is good. where miui would hang and data would freeze and id haft to redo the airplane mode trick, it would just hang for a sec or 2 and then start downloading again. ive only had it hang 2x now and i think its because it might be switching from hspa to 3g or even wifi.
so for the sim card thing worked. if it fails in the mean time, ill come back to this and give an update. thanks for suggesting it being the sim card cause i wouldnt have thought of that.
I'm another day strong without any problems. I don't know of its due to the new sim or because i switched to a Samsung based rom. I should switch back to test, but I'm loving the speed of icsrewed right now.
If i had to guess i would say it's due to the sim, and if so, there should be a sticky somewhere that says to make sure your not using an older 3g sim card. Would have saved me months of aggravation.
Will report back after a few more days. In a week or so I'll switch back to cm to see if it fixes it there as well.
That's one reason I generally buy my phones at the att store (authorized reseller, but dedicated to att phones). Usually they will price match, and they know things like that. My SIM went bad when I had my captivate. Later when I upgraded to a faux G phone the att rep knew I would need a new SIM, and replaced it then, even though it was only a month old. They also knew the "3G" data plan needed to be converted to a "4G" (still unlimited) plan on their system for me to get data.
You don't get that kind of assistance when you buy at Walmart, online, etc.

Interesting, maybe next time if my data refuses to work I should bug at&t for a new Sim card. I had problems on different roms including stock rom where I had to turn off and on my data or else it will not work. But I think my modem might have played a role. Data seems fine now.

Yup just show up. They shouldn't charge. as long as your an att customer theyll take care of you. I've never heard of anyone paying for a new Sim. If you lose your Sim I've heard of them charging people, but i doubt they'll charge even then.
I have an original ATT Note that was hacked to use T-Mobile with a Saurom Rom .....not sure which Radio....
My question is when T-Mobile releases their version next month can my original hacked Note be rehacked with the new T-Mobile ROM and radios?
Or do I have to restore the ATT files and sell to an ATT customer...then buying a new T-Mobile Note?
thanks for the help....

yep that's what I thought the answer would be....just hate to take a $ hit on it which I no doubt would...plus with Note 2 coming out soon it would be nice to be able to use the one I have with the real T-Mobile Rom and Radio....until the Note 2 comes out....

Is it because no developer will be working on it or what?
I dont think the t-mobile radio alone will help. But, if a replacement speaker/anntenna assembly becomes available, that should do the trick.
IIRC the phones are internally different. At least the antennas are. Thats the weak point of the at&t model. Personally id sell yours and get the one specifically madefor AWS. Plenty of people will want yours (LTE). Not everyone will want a tmobile branded phone.
Pretty sure the tmob phone will have superior AWS reception

Correct me if I'm wrong but T-Mobile is supposed to be rolling out with LTE next year, will the att note support that LTE since the phone supports it. If that's the case I will stick with the att note in hopes that I could get LTE.

Going to go for the T-Mobile Note
I guess I'm convinced that selling the ATT version and just buying the new T-mobile Note is what I'll do..............I figured that was the wisest thing from the start but was curious as to the "why's"........
I'm on T-Mo with the note too, but have come to the conclusion that I'll hold off for the note 2, assuming it comes to T-Mo, and if not then I'll get the T-Mo note later. I'm basing this on the marginally acceptable d/l & u/l speeds I'm getting and that 90%+ of the time my data use is on wifi anyway.
Just sharing another T-Mo users thoughts.
T-Mobile Note....Wait or Not
[My download and connectivity issues are such that without wi-fi dialing my service at home is unpredictable and marginal....so looking towards T-Mobile having their own Note makes waiting for Note 2 not a good option unless the ATT Note I'm using could be flashed again with updated radio and perhaps ROM.
Was hoping that taking those from the new T-Mobile Note would be possible, but if not then I'll have to go the buy-sell route and move my ATT version as soon as the new one is out and in my hands.
Even with this fix: http://www.xda-developers.com/android/galaxy-note-i717-hacked-to-work-on-t-mobile-3g4g/ you are getting poor results? I am thinking of getting a used note to use with my t-mobile 2 year plan, I will probably not going to be able afford the "no contract note" even if its released for t mobile soon...
I'm getting 3-10mbps average and that's when I'm NOT on wifi. I really see no reason to why you would sell your current note for a newer phone but with the sake exact specs at such a higher price. Wifi calling would be the biggest reason and 42mbps? Even with my galaxy s2 on T-Mobile I hit 5-12mbps all day. But I use data only for BS poker, Facebook and BS like that. I don't see at all why u would bother switching especially if its only to flash roms ans radios. Several threads talk about getting the tmobile galaxy note radio working on the att version.

Hey everyone, I got a art galaxy note last week, try to root it and flash the tmo from to work on tmo 4g.
The first I got the phone, its its already up to pics, so I root it and flashed the ics modems, blaze, kid, and last one(forgot the name)
I can able to get online but the speed is around 500k up, I'm quite upset at the moment. So I try few roms like onlyone beta 4, saurom rc 7.1, also cm9 h0tw1r3 r5 patch 1, tried *#2263# to stay at 1700hz and run hiapn to do wcdma preferred. each rom with all 3modems and still around 500k down. I'm so sad and don't know what should I try next
The best one is under saurom with kid almost reach 1m down.....
Is some had the same problem what im suffering? Please I really need some help....do I need to flash kernel in this circumstances?now is 3.0.8-perf-I717UCLE3-CL577875
PS: I'm in new York area
Please I need some assistance here guys....
there may not be any more help we can provide...
Based on the fact that you have tried all available roms, and modems. and the combinations of both.
I'm not one to give up, but based on the information you have given us, we have nothing else to offer as a suggestion.
It may very well be that your area is a particularly poor one for reception, or network.
Did you have a good speed with the stock rom and modem ?
If so, you may want to revert.......g
Agreed. You tried all the usual suspects. I quit fighting the wrong phone for the network long ago and now buy the phones for the carrier.
20% of the threads around here are about people unsuccessfully using equipment on the network it wasn't designed for.
Since your phone is unlocked, why not get an at&t month-to-month or Straightalk plan.
If you're set on t-mobile, sell or trade the phone on craigslist and get the t-mobile version.
There's no sense in being upset at this.
Thank you ranger and greg for the reply, the only reason I want to make this phone to work on tmo cause I want white other than the dark blue or black....
I know using a phone that not regularly release by the provider doesn't make sense, but just wondering is anyone having the same problem and figure out a best rom/radio or method to get it done.
actually I'm satisfy with 3g speed if it able to. ...
I think I might just give it up and sell it...=[
I have at&t but I rarely get 3g speeds even though that lying network icon is telling me 4g LTE. I don't see much improvement in their network since 3g. Can't you enjoy the phone and forget the network icon? I mean, what are you being prevented from doing?
Hi all, I am considering purchasing an AT&T galaxy Note, but I use tmobile, If I nlock the phone, will I be able to use the 4g network on tmobile or will it be stuck on 2G Edge only?...Thanks in adavance.....Larry
Just buy a t-mobile version of the note. Avoid all the jerking around everyone does when they buy a phone for the wrong network.

Blaze modem use for running the SGHI717 on the T-Mobile network, will give you marginal performance, with the risk of damage to the device.
1 in 10 users have suffered device sim detection failure when running this device on the tmo network.
The cause for this failure has not been identified...but if the problem occurs, the device will be rendered unusable.
Your question did get answered, as a senior member did advise you to avoid the risk by using a device designed for your network, and I agree with his recommendation.
Buyer beware....g

Hello forum-goers! It seems that I am at a crossroad right now. I have been researching switching to T-mobile for the past few months now (I was sold on the Wi-Fi calling feature). I just had a few questions before doing so.
1) Would you guys recommend switching over to T-Mo now or should I wait for the new, new to to switch over (I haven't owned an HTC since the Touch Pro 2 and the One is a pretty sweet device).
2) Does anyone have the insurance/JUMP program, I am pretty clumsy with my phone so I have the insurance with Sprint on my current Samsung Galaxy S II? Would you recommend getting a different type of insurance (like SquareTrade)?
3) Does anyone have any experience using this device in the SF Bay Area? I have heard plenty of good news, but it's mostly in different states.
4) I was flashing ROMs on the Touch Pro 2 (Windows Mobile 6.x) and the E4GT is my first Android phone, what is the learning curve with HTC Android devices?
I don't have much to add but I will say WiFi calling is great to have considering T Mobile's poor building penetration. Sending and receiving text is not an issue but when having an actual phone conversation the other party can't hear you to a few seconds after you said it and the whole conversation sometimes become awkward and confusing deciding who needs to speak next, but its serves its purpose.
As far as the jump program goes its really not a bad idea as long as you get approve for no money down on the original headset or else it really makes jump seems like a bit of a rip off considering you could sell the phone yourself outright and not lose out on the initial deposit you made on the phone.

i just switched from sprint to T-Mobile and havent looked back once. was worth the 180 ETF. I really really wanted to stay with sprint but their service just kept getting worse and worse as they "upgraded" towers. I do have the jump program and i dont see why you want to use a different insurance. its ten bucks for full insurance (sprint was 11 or 12 now i think) plus it allows you to upgrade every 6 months if you wanted to. I have the ONE and i really dont see myself upgrading anytime unless something amazing comes out. The phone really is fantastic.
I'm in NJ so no experience in SF.
Flashing is pretty simple once you do the initial setup which there is self contained programs here in forums that can help simplify that for you. right now im still on stock because i really like the wifi calling and most other roms beyond 4.2.1 dont support it yet. hopefully in the next month the update will be out.
hope this helps a bit.

I ended up pulling the trigger and so far the experience is great.
Stock, out-the-box the device is fantastic, I've never seen something so fluid without some tweaking done to it.
The service in my house is a bit similar to Sprint but WiFi calling negates that. When traveling around I get 4GLTE pretty much every where I go. I have yet to try it in my work environment, but since that is in SF I'm sure I won't have any problems. The only thing is, I signed up for the 2 GB plan. I've never really tracked my data usage since Sprint was unlimited, so I'll just have to wait and see if that is enough.
I am still reading up on how to flash the device, it's a completely different process from my old E4GT. But I am definitely excited to be onto something new and can't wait until I am able to figure out the whole process.
Thank you both for responding to my questions!

Thanks, so far I am definitely loving everything. The phone is super sweet and T-Mobile's Wifi calling helps when cell reception isn't up to snuff. The only downside is the lack of T-Mobile ROMs.
Overall, I couldn't be happier.

No kernel needed. I assume you're going to get the T-mobile One and not keep the S4 right? Then yeah, no kernel needed. Just root, install twrp/cwm and flash any rom you want from the international XDA section. Its what I've done (except I have the att model unlocked to tmobile) and it works great. You can even flash the Google play edition roms too.

I am using the $30/month 100 min/5G-4G Data. Since for prepaid, t-mobile wifi calling still eats minutes......I've swapped to using Groove IP + Google Voice for all my needs. Ported my old Sprint # To Google Voice for $20.00 and have been happy ever since.
Just have to make sure to setup Google Voice app to get all SMS's and call or chat with T-mobile CS to turn off T-Mobile voicemail, as prepaid cannot forward to google voice properly as post paid.
All in all, I'm very happy with T-mobile, and will never, ever miss sprint. Ever.

Coming from the Sprint GS 2 E4GT, flashing seemed so easy, with all the videos from QBKing77, the thorough guides on how to flash the phone, even the super easy one-clicks, flashing was a cake walk. After reading guides on how to flash the HTC One, I thought that I was going to end up bricking my phone.
Luckily I was able to find some videos from Flow Wolf and QBKing77 which basically walks you through the steps on Unlocking the Bootloader, obtaining root, and flashing the recovery. From there, flashing the ROM works just like it does on Samsung devices, with the exception of having to flash the kernel separately.
Last night I flashed TrickDroid 5.6.0 due to many people saying that you are still able to maintain WiFi Calling. So far, I'm loving it!
