Q: Unable to update t ZVA on stock rooted - any suggestion? - Sprint LG G3

I have rooted stock ZV8 on my G3. OTA update to ZVA fails every time, similarly using the OTA update file via ADB update or via SD card update give the same results - fails in the beginning of upgrade process.
Is there something I can do to make the update go short of completely blowing everything away with .TOT restore to stock?
Thanks.
OM

Why not just download engine95's ZVA? It's the same and you get to keep root. You can't accept OTA because I assume you have TWRP. You must have factory recovery to accept OTAs. Most folks are against dirty flashing, but I flashed zva right over zv8 with not 1 issue. All settings and apps stayed intact.

Unless you OTA updated to zv8, you are likely still on the zv4/zv6 partitions. Stock rooted ZVA works great for me with a dirty flash also. That would be your best choice if you want an easy upgrade.

Thank you for your response. I got the device when it had ZV6 on it, and upgraded OTA to ZV8 right away.
How do you perform the dirty flash? I am still on stock recovery, As I said, any update using the OTA update.zip file fail.
Thanks.

I think that is most likely the only way you are going to be able to go to ZVA without going the .tot route and losing everything, if your planning on keeping your data.

I found individual partitions .img files. I've used TWRP and I know how to install individual partitions with TWRP. I am not sure if the order matters, and if it does, what order should I use...

[Q] Sprint's OTA

So I just bought a Sprint SIII, and avoided the OTA like any tinkerer would. I flashed CWM, and rooted successfully, but I don't know what to do with the OTA. As this is a shared device, the other user is likely to install the update. Will we lose root after the update? There's been a lot of talk of updates here and all the searching still hasn't gotten me the info I need. Can a fellow get a hand? If it takes root, will OTA root keeper work? Can I just re-do the entire process using the toolkit and the AIO option?
You can't update with the OTA if you're rooted by going into Settings, so you should be okay.

So it won't touch CWM
Edit: The notification was there before we rooted, which is why, I imagine we still got it.
Clicked thanky.
Total confusion. So I have to apply the update and reroot in CWM...then the update will rewrite the stock recovery, and I reflash CWM...say, with the toolkit?

Yes pretty much. If you apply the update on the stock rooted ROM you will loose CWM recovery , but you can get it back by using ODIN or the toolbox to guide you through it

Hey guys,
It might be a little early right now but as soon as any one of you are able to get the VRUEMJ7 (Android 4.3) update from either Samsung Kies or the Verizon Installer please post here. We need someone to pull the file for us so we can mod it and make it rootable.

It hasnt been released yet. You dont usually respond when I quote you in anything related to achieving root but would it be just as productive to try to pull the partitions from a device thats already taken the ota and retained root? Or possibly getting the partitions you need from an emmc dump via qpst. We already got the modem and NON-HLOS.bin signed (thus odin flashable). What specific partitions are you in need of?

We need the full original system.img.ext4 (as would be included in the normal ODIN TAR for this build) and must be identical to the one included in the factory TAR or ODIN will refuse to flash it.
I have the update on my phone right now. How would I go abouts getting the file from Kies or the Verizon program? I have both.
I updated OTA to 4.3.

Unfortunately you can't already be updated or it's too late. Kies and the VZW Installer get it as part of the update process for them but they have to detect that the phone is currently on an MI1 build to get it.

There is an emergency recovery feature in Kies. Now if I can get it to kick into that mode, but not reset my phone, wouldn't it make the file begin to download?
Usually the updates are released via the vzw updater first..... Wonder if they did it this way on purpose trying to get as many as possible to get locked down?

It is possible but my guess it would probably download VRUDMI1 build instead since MJ7 is not available as of yet for most people.

If they are monitoring these threads then they must surely know how we got root so quickly last time. It might be very likely this theory is true in fact. So far every update broke the previous root method and has required a new root method every time.

Yep, kies does not have it yet. I'll keep my eye on it though.
I havent seen any indications of it by other means either. But if getting a stock.img.ext4 is our end goal then there are a few other means by which we can create a correctly sparsed and properly sized system.img.ext4 that will flash with odin

I've been able to dd my already-rooted MJ7 system partition, copy it back to my pc, mount it, modify it, img2simg it, and reflash it with heimdall AND have the changes stick. You do have to do a chcon on the file to make it executable by non-root but I'm trying to modify the context in the mounted image.
would it matter if the current ME7 is rooted? i'll check my Kies when i get home in an hour or so

Help with 4.4.2 in global mode.

Okay I am deployed over seas. I am bone stock mk2. I would like to take the update to play around with it but I have my phone in global mode using a different sim card. Every time I check for update it says update unavailable at this time. Thanks for any help.

You have to go to back to full stock mk2 to be able to update. If you want to keep root you can use the guide in the general section on how to keep root and update. The guide works for the leaked KitKat build we got, nc2, but I'm not sure if it works for the official nc5 update, you can check the thread for that.

Since you're not on the Verizon network, you won't be offered the update via OTA. I'd wait until someone grabs the NC5 update
Since you're factory stock, you could install the OTA by downloading it to your internal SD card as an update.zip and booting into stock recovery to install it.
Note that you can't "play around" with it. You'll have NC5, no root, and very likely no way to go back.

The update comes from VZ over their network. If you're not on their network, the update servers aren't reachable.
Oh - another thing you can try is to use Kies to check for updates. I don't think that VZ has made the update available there yet, so have patience.

I'm on the NG6 update which I'm assuming is the reason it won't install. When I was on nc5 the terminal emulator trick worked.

Assuming the answer is no to the above question can someone try the following and see if it allows you to update to NG6, Keep your root access, and allow you to continue to use ss v3.75 after the update:
This "KeepRoot" method uses a modified version of the official NC5 to NG6 OTA Update.zip to upgrade while maintaining your User Data & Root Access!
**Prerequisite** This method requires that your NC5 system is 100% stock except for root and Safestrap. The update will fail if any system files have been modified or deleted, e.g. thru Xposed, etc. You must first restore the stock files or reflash back to stock NC5 and re-root. If you are not 100% stock please don't waste your time by attempting this method.
Here it is: I545_NC5_to_NG6_KeepRoot_OTA.zip
1. Place the I545_NC5_to_NG6_KeepRoot_OTA.zip in the root of your ext sdcard.
2. Use Towelroot-v3.apk to root your device.
3. Install Safestrap-I545-3.75-KitKat.apk
4. Boot into Safestrap recovery but Do Not Wipe!
5. Flash the I545_NC5_to_NG6_KeepRoot_OTA.zip in the "Stock Slot." Once flashing is complete press "Home" and reboot into "Download Mode".
6. Last, flash the I545_NG6_Stock_Kernel.tar.md5 in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
Once complete the phone will reboot then "optimize apps" before completely rebooting. Done!

Blocking OTAs is generally a good idea. As the other post says you MAY have to downgrade. 10B firmware is what you want to be on to stump root and flash the bumped TWRP.
Once you are rooted
you can use Titanium Backup to freeze "System Updates" or use a file explorer to rename or delete the file (I recommend freezing or renaming)
If you are on 10b root it with stump, flash the twrp image with flashify, and freeze system updates. Download cm12 nightly, and some 5.0.x gapps, I recommend pa, then go into maps, search for like McDonald's, and set a navigation route to it, then boot into twrp, backup stock (optional, but recommended), then do a advanced wipe and wipe everything except your storages (I do it twice) then flash your cm12 and gapps. And boom. Set it up, sit back, and enjoy.
