So I am getting my LG G3 in the mail today. Is there any recommendations that you guys have for me? Do I need to block OTAs right from the get go if I want CM12 on it?
Thanks!

Blocking OTAs is generally a good idea. As the other post says you MAY have to downgrade. 10B firmware is what you want to be on to stump root and flash the bumped TWRP.
Once you are rooted
you can use Titanium Backup to freeze "System Updates" or use a file explorer to rename or delete the file (I recommend freezing or renaming)
If you are on 10b root it with stump, flash the twrp image with flashify, and freeze system updates. Download cm12 nightly, and some 5.0.x gapps, I recommend pa, then go into maps, search for like McDonald's, and set a navigation route to it, then boot into twrp, backup stock (optional, but recommended), then do a advanced wipe and wipe everything except your storages (I do it twice) then flash your cm12 and gapps. And boom. Set it up, sit back, and enjoy.

Prologue: I myself own a Sprint G3, and I'm rooted and running Bumpd TWRP just fine. I'm running the unofficial Sprint CyanogenMod 12 and all is well.
The Problem: My friend asked me to do the same to his Verizon G3, so I downgraded his G3 to 10b so that I could stump root it using a .kfz I think, I forget the exact file name. Well any who, that went well and then Stump Root worked, but it had to use bruteforce mode (My Sprint Variant didn't require BruteForce) but it worked so I wasn't very concerned. Then I used Flashify to flash the Bumpd TWRP to his G3. That went well too, I rebooted into TWRP immediately after flashing it and while in TWRP I pushed the CyanogenMod 12 .zip and the Lollipop PA GAPPS to his phone. I totally forgot to push su. That was my big mistake. So I flashed CM12 and GAPPS still not knowing that I forgot to root too by flashing su. It booted and the phone runs great on CM 12, but I do need to be able to flash him back to stock and he does need root.
This is where I need help: I've tried Stump Root and Towel root, and I've attempted to push su, but the binaries won't install of course because it isn't rooted. So my friend has a G3 running basically a stock version of CyanogenMod 12 with no root and no custom recovery. Is there any way I can install root and custom recovery without losing CM? I know I can just flash the stock if need be, but I'm curious if there's any way I can fix it without all those drastic measures.
Recovery is gone? What do you see when you try to get into it? Also, you can enable root in developer options or security I think.

When I boot into recovery, its the stock LG recovery, it just has LG factory reset options. Somehow it got reflashed over the TWRP

This is how the Verizon g3 is. When you boot I to recovery it will always show stock recovery. Scroll down to factory reset and hit yes. Then if it really is bumped it will boot into twrp

Yes, when you try to enter recovery using the button combo. Otherwise it goes straight to recovery.
if you download quick boot you don't have to deal with the buttons.
I've been using this LG G3 for a few weeks without any issue. Bought it used and have been happy with it. Getting down to business tinkering I downloaded Stump Root and SuperSu. When I fired up Stump Root grind was already greyed out and it said my device is rooted. If it's rooted why am I getting this screen from SuperSu. My G3 is at 4.4.2. Trying to research before posting is there no root currently for 4.4.2? I'm confused why it says I'm rooted if I'm having this issue with SuperSu.

This happened to me yesterday after I had flashed a rom and I was stuck for hours till I had the brilliant idea of flashing super su again and it fixed just download and flash in recovery and when it reboots you have to download supersu from the play store and the first time you open it, it will ask if you want to update binary normal or using recovery I clicked normal and fixed. Hope it helps

Did you flash the superuser zip I linked?
Sent from my LGLS990 using XDA Free mobile app
Are You On stock zv6? If your On stock zv6, you have to use flashtool to go to zv4 so You can use stump. There is no root for zv6 from stock, unless that has changed.
Sent from my LGLS990 using XDA Free mobile app
Have you checked to see if twrp recovery is on your phone? If it is flash the SuperSU zip linked a posts before mine. If not check and see if your on ZV6 or ZV4. If your on ZV6 you need to flash tool back to ZV4. If your on ZV4 and it doesn't let you root it's because your phone was already rooted then the person you bought it from unrooted it so you will still have to revert back to ZV4 then use stumproot.
Once your phone has been rooted one time by stump root and then unrooted (probably what happened in your case since you bought it used) you will have to revert back ZV4 using the flashtool and return to stock. Then you can use stumproot and then use bump to put a recovery on your phone. Your phone has to be completely stock in order to use to use stumproot.
Thanks guys. It's because the phone has been updated ZV6. I will look into using the flashtool to get back to ZV4.
I have rooted stock ZV8 on my G3. OTA update to ZVA fails every time, similarly using the OTA update file via ADB update or via SD card update give the same results - fails in the beginning of upgrade process.
Is there something I can do to make the update go short of completely blowing everything away with .TOT restore to stock?
Thanks.
OM
Why not just download engine95's ZVA? It's the same and you get to keep root. You can't accept OTA because I assume you have TWRP. You must have factory recovery to accept OTAs. Most folks are against dirty flashing, but I flashed zva right over zv8 with not 1 issue. All settings and apps stayed intact.

Unless you OTA updated to zv8, you are likely still on the zv4/zv6 partitions. Stock rooted ZVA works great for me with a dirty flash also. That would be your best choice if you want an easy upgrade.

Thank you for your response. I got the device when it had ZV6 on it, and upgraded OTA to ZV8 right away.
How do you perform the dirty flash? I am still on stock recovery, As I said, any update using the OTA update.zip file fail.
Thanks.

I think that is most likely the only way you are going to be able to go to ZVA without going the .tot route and losing everything, if your planning on keeping your data.

i recently rooted my Galaxy S4 verizon SCH-I545 5.0.1 My main reason for doing so is because i want to install CM12 (to improve battery and no bloatware) but need to back up my stock ROM before wiping anything, so i can restore if anything gets messed up but when i installed CWM via ROM manager app , i booted in recovery only to discover that i didn't have the option to back up my stock ROM...nothing that says "back up and restore" or anything remotely close...so after alot of reading a searching it looks like TWRP was the one that most suggested for my phone. My question is, can i just use Flashify and flash TWRP over the existing CWM?? will this mess anything up or brick my phone??? please help and excuse my ignorance

In your phone settings, about phone, it'll tell you what BL you're on. If you aren't on MDK and haven't taken the OF1 and OC1 update then you'd be safe with busybox and safestrap.
Looks like I have MDF

Keep it! You can install CM, and whichever recovery you want. I never had the MDK phone so I was limited by recoveries and ROMs. You could use TWRP for your recovery. You're able to flash AOSP ROMs. I would keep your phone on MDK at all costs.

I rooted using the desktop version of kingroot (all in Chinese) and it worked for me...did it about a week ago. No problem, I'm not sure if you wanted to but SDM system app is the update app I'm pretty sure. You could freeze that in Titanium Backup and it should keep the update from appearing. I'm going through that but I'm not rooted so I can't do anything about it. It's all good, if I can help I try to and you have to start somewhere, if it has anything to do with just about any phone, you'll find on XDA.

I did want to mention if you're really new that I'd be careful with the apps. Generally it's not good to uninstall or delete system apps and sometimes Google apps are the same way. A lot of times but not always, you can freeze those and be alright, other times it'll make your phone go crazy so I'd check out the posts on the safe apps to freeze. Another good thing about freezing them is if you have any issue, just unfreeze those.

sorry mate, can't do cwm or twrp or cm.
Of1 rooted, roll back to MDK?
I have vzw s4 rooted with odin on OF1 and took the 5.0.1 OTA update. Is it possible to rollback to MDK or earlier version of Android so i can install TWRP or CWM, to be able to flash whatever custom rom i choose? Like do i need to downgrade say to 4.3 so i can upgrade to 6.0 cm13? If this is at all possible which android should i downgrade to?
Similar question here. I have a Verizon S4 (SCH-I545) and am on OF1. I just did a full factory restore using the recovery assistant software, I did not get an option of a version. From what I have been reading, it sounds like there is no way to get back to an earlier version, is that really true? I find it very hard to find current information, most of what I dig up seems to be dated. I just rooted the phone. All I really want is to install the AOSP ROM. I don't care what hoops I have to jump through, if only there is a path! I have tried Odin but keep getting an error that again I have not found any useful info on.

The BEST way to do it is to flashtool zv4. Root and unlock it.
As for rooting zva-e, there are procedures linked in the thread. Unlocking the boot loader are there too, I believe. Doing it this way may cause issues. So I all depends how much work you want to go through.
Personally, just use ZV4, root/unlock. Then flash modem and whatever ROM you want.

I appriciate your help! Yes, the phone restores just fine using flashtool with the ZV4 .tot file, but once it reboots it wont make it past the LG logo bootup screen. One time it made it all the way into the OS, and went through the activation process, then powered itself off. Now it wont reboot past the second animated LG logo.

I should also mention that sometimes when restoring the .tot with Flash Tool, it powers itself off in the middle of it and just keeps booting into download mode. It always happens anywhere between 30-60% when it says SYSTEM in the progress log. Could it be that my phones internal memory that stores that information is bad?
