Hey guys,
I recently bought a Refurbished unlocked SM-G900T to use with my AT&T service. I chose the T-Mobile variant because of the faster android updates and unlocked bootloader. So far, It's been working great, no problems at all with voice, data, etc. The first thing I did when I got it was install the rooted stock OF6 rom Muniz_ri posted, then ran the "extreme debloat" script. Well, I tried to use tethering and it's acting really funny. I can enable tethering fine, and it works for about 1 minute, then it stops working. The connected devices drop to 1mbps connection strength (from the usual 130+mbps wireless N speeds) and have zero network connectivity. I tried the Tethering mod also posted on the rooted OF6 page, but it still does the same thing. PDANet+ also does the same thing. Anybody know what's going on? Wi-Fi works fine on the phone as a client.
Ok, so this only seems to happen when I connect a laptop which has an intel Wi-Fi chip in it. When I connect my iPad to it, it works perfectly.
Alright, the fix was to go into the device manager on the laptop and set the wireless card to Wireless G-only. The issue seems to be resolved by doing this.

Yes, I've done the routing fix. WiFi Tether functions, it just doesn't function well. I seem to be topping out at 20KBps with 4G, which is obviously pretty bad. And a bummer, too, since I was so looking forward to ditching EasyTether (crashes all the time, doesn't handle loss of 4G well). Anyone else had some problems here, or better yet, found a solution?
Using viperROM at the moment, for reference.
Yes!
Can't get the stock hotspot app to work either. My laptop connects fine but no data?
SteelROM_v1.01
Don't you have to have something in your plan to use the stock hotspot app? I've never tried.
I can't get Wifi Tether to work at all.
But Sprint Hot Spot works fine. With a Hot Spot Enabled ROM of course.
Yeah, same here. WiFi Tether doesn't work at all, fails on the starting wifi interface.
HotSpot worked fine in an enabled ROM
Branacle works great for me.

What kind of speeds you getting?
And what ROM?
Ugh. Unlocked hotspot app is even less functional. Stupid thing prevents my 4G from connecting, same as USB tether does on Sense. So aggravating. This is the entire reason I rooted to begin with, and there's no workaround
So I really needed tethering for the next few days so I decided to spend the $15 to enable the feature. I'm able to connect my laptop (tried 2 different laptops) to the phone using AP or USB tethering. The problem is the internet connectivity (exclamation point appearing on the wifi status within 1 min of connecting). The wifi status says no internet access, but it is still connected to the phone.
On the phone side of things, I have full 4G bars (even when the connection drops on the laptop). I have a really good connection in the area (speedtest of ~2000KB/s). Ive called T-Mobile and they can't figure it out. They told me to go exchange the phone for another one and make sure it works with my laptop before leaving.
I just hope the new Amaze will work. The mobile AP feature really comes in handy sometimes... I may have to leave the amaze and go GSII if I can't get this resolved. Anyone else having a similar issue with tethering? FYI, I was able to get USB tethering to work by using easyteher (from android market).

A known issue that T-Mobile is working feverishly on delivering a maintenance release to patch the issue.
Surprised - I have not had problems except when fooling around with some different ROM's here. Back on 1.36 and all working OK.
Did the OTA break it or is this issue right out of the box?
out of the box. not software .6 related. i'm suffering from it too. and i'm on employee plan. same sim in other phones work, just not in amaze. weird as some are not experiencing issues.. or able to connect just briefly, then timeouts occur.
hope we don't have to pay
Looks like they are locking down on it
Friend that wrks for them same issue
All other phones work need to pay for this phone or gs2
????? tethering. get is free!!! double why would you pay????

I had the same issue and it's an easy fix that is not hardware-related at all.
Go into Settings > Wireless & networks > Mobile networks > Access Point Names > Click on T-Mobile Data > Now delete everything in the APN type box and make sure that there is nothing in the Authentication type box either.
It didn't work for me and now it works!
Typical T-Mobile - in their quest to remove functionality, they actually break more.

Editing on me normal wifi: this thing was super slow! is there a way to make it faster?
my mytouch 3g was way faster than this
I've been searching the forums, but didn't find this exact question. I want to tether my rooted NT to my non-rooted droid 3 phone to provide 3g internet access when I'm not around a wifi connection using a USB cable connecting the two (I have a USB female to male micro USB adapter to connect the nook cable to the phone). I would prefer not to root my phone and not use the mobile hotspot or pay verizon an extra $30/mo, etc. I have used Easy Tether for my phone and laptop previously and it has worked well. I've looked at pdanet and pdanet tablet, but it wants to use bluetooth which has not been enabled on the NT yet. Is there any way to even do this yet until the USB hosting is enabled on the NT?
This is not the answer you are looking for, but I have been using WiFi tethering from my T-Mobile MyTouch 4G (with CM7) for a few days now.
If you could tether via USB and not get in trouble with VZ, I don't see why you couldn't do the same via WiFi. Since you would be tethering to another Android device instead of to a laptop, I wouldn't think that even if VZ is checking the data going through the phone, they would notice anything all that different, since both devices are running Gingerbread.
You'd have to put a WiFi tethering app on the Droid, which may require you to root. My MyTouch 4G came with WiFi Tethering capability from the get-go, so perhaps you can find a non-root WiFi app to let you do it.
wifi tethering works but I dont think USB will because B and N didnt put the drivers for the nook to recognize another android device... or rather any device except a computer through USB. They stripped many things out of this Android OS

I was able to do so but I had to play with the configurations of the phone (not root it) since it was a connection thing and not touching the OS on the phone. I work for the company so I have access on how to do so. However that being said I deactivated which I will explain below.

Carriers can tell the difference on what is using what. This is why AT&T surprised their customers by billing them for tethering usage on their network. It has nothing to do with whether both devices are Gingerbread or not but how the traffic is moving on the network. It simply requires a sniffer. Also, I removed my phone fix when I found out that Verizon is also planning on doing the same thing AT&T has already done; wouldn't be good if they discovered many of their employees are doing this. The two carriers normally follow suit. I'm just surprised that both have taken so long to respond since they are loosing revenue. I think it's a ridiculous charge and customers shouldn't have to pay for the service that was already built in. If the user has a plan then it should be based on their data plan not on how they are using on connecting nodes to it.
If you look in the forums there is a special driver that has been ported over from the Nook Color and rewritten for the tablet. It allows for an Ad-hoc or device to device connection via wifi. That would solve the problem with the Wifi issue. Be careful however because it is an advanced procedure requiring you to be rooted and install root explorer and copy over the new wifi driver... Good Luck!
It looks like the Droid DNA has some tethering/hotspot connectivity issues when connected to some Apple devices such as the iPad. The 4g connection would just drop on a random basis when tethering using the official options in settings. Hotspot issues have somewhat been confirmed in the Slashgear review of the phone. Anyone have any solutions?
I'm glad somebody posted this. I was at the airport, all excited to try out my fancy new hotspot, but got disappointing results. It initialized fine and my computer was able to connect to both the phone and the internet. But the 4G constantly dropped to the point where it was basically unusable. I'd get ~30 seconds of blazing fast speed, followed back a DNS lookup error that would persist for seconds to minutes. Hoping it's a software issue.
I have not had any problems with my hot spot. I was able to play a few hours of CoD black ops 2 with no lag or disconnections.

I've also not had any hotspot problems. I'm rooted though and using wifi tether from the market and it has been working flawlessly. It has an option to ping servers and download a few packets at set intervals in order to prevent DNS issues and connection drops, works like a charm.
I think issues with the stock wifi app is common on Verizon. Before my DNA I had a droid Incredible that had connection issues. If only doing light web browsing the app seemed to work ok, but if you went to a site with a large number of images, or tried to watch a video, or download a file it often would lose the network. I looked into the problem and it seems like the app had issues with most phones. My solution was to root and install Wifi Tether. Not only do I like the functionality of Wifi Tether better but i never had anymore issues after installing it.
With my DNA the stock app seems to be much better. I've been getting download speeds around 15-30 Mb/s all day. I'm still considering rooting for Wifi Tether though for the functionality and stability.
I have to return the DNA because I need to be able to tether to my iPad and Macbook. The phone does tether properly to my Windows 7 notebook though. I really don't feel like using a third party solution for tethering/hotspot functionality.
I have problems when I use my iPad. Very annoying.

I picked one up on launch day and used it for about a week, everything was fine except the data dropped repeatedly with the Mobile Hotspot app. I went back to the store I bought it from and there wasn't any more! They found a store at Stonestown that had 2, so I zipped over there and they swapped it out. We tested it by swapping out the Sim card on the original unit, after I also did a factory reset, but it was still bad. So got a fresh one and it seems to be better but when I first turn Mobile Hotspot on, it drops a couple times but then its good and stable. Not ideal, but usable whereas the first one was not. Hopefully they'll give an update for this, it'll be super badass when this is solid.
I'm still having issues with my DNA hotspot. It works for a few minutes, then the connection drops.
Internet works fine on the device itself, but tethered devices have problems.
I've tried in multiple locations. I've tried with the following devices: iPad, Android tablet, MacBook Pro, Dell Windows laptop. The result is always the same. My devices are able to connect to the hotspot on the DNA, Internet works briefly, then stops working.
Made a few calls to Verizon tech support, and I've done all the troubleshooting with both tier 1 and tier 2 reps. Next step will be swapping out the device at the store...
Glad to see I'm not the only one having these issues... Tethering to either my iPad or Macbook pro over wifi is horrible. My workaround has been to use USB or bluetooth tethering instead. I haven't tried any of the 3rd party tether apps yet, though since I'm rooted I'll probably get them going at some point.
I just swapped out my DNA at my local Verizon store. So far, the results have been mixed.
My connection pauses briefly, then kicks back in after 20-30 seconds. This is slightly better than before--my connection just plain stopped.
Laptop and Android tablet are faring better than my iPad. The connection with my iPad 4th gen. freezes and doesn't come back.
Verizon reps said there were no known issues. But clearly I am not the only person having problems with hotspot.
Tempted to root, cyanogen mod, and wifi tether the old fashioned way...
Either that or take my DNA back and just get the iPhone. By the way, my wife's iPhone 5 is attached to my account and works flawlessly with all devices and in all locations. Her smug smile is starting to grate on my nerves!
Never used the stock tether app but i use the rooted wifi tether app with the following settings as my main source of internet on my laptop without any issues
Profile - HTC rezound
Method - Netd-Ndc (master)
Wifi-Driver reload - (check)
MSS clamping - (check)
Routing fix - (check)
I don't have any issues when tethering with my Windows 8 installation, but tethering with my Linux installation has been iffy.

My 17" MBP kept timing out trying to connect to the stock Hotspot.
I had this same exact problem with the I first got my Rezound, and then it got fixed in an update later on. Can't believe they're having the same exact problem again!

I was afraid of that. I've heard of other people having problems with other HTC phones and the Apple devices that try to tether. Guess I'll just have to wait for the fix.
Well, I called VZW today, they had told me that it IS a known issue and HTC has not responded yet... so they forwarded me to HTC and HTC had told me I needed to send my phone in. I called VZW back and they are sending me a new device! will follow up once I get it.
For me its my Android Tablet and Windows 8 PC that is connecting to my phone. So its not just apple products.
On my third DNA already. Still having the same problems with hotspot. At this point there is no sense in swapping devices. Guess i will just have to wait for them to fix it with a patch.

Just installed the Wifi Tether App from the app store, and used the settings that Cdoan34 posted above, it it works reliably for me. I think there's something messed up with the way the stock tether app interfaces with the radios or something. Using the stock thether app you can see the 4G/3G icon flap on and off like the phone can't keep the data connection up.
So at my new place i can only get satalite internet, no dsl, no cable. I setup a 4g repeater and get awesome signal in my house now. Set up a router with dd-wrt to connect to my phone's wifi hotspot. My problem is when i use it, 4g drops after a while, maybe 5-30 min. tethering usb to a computer works fine with pdanet+. Ive tried different roms, resetting to factory, rooting with 3rd party wifi tether apps, sqllite editor hack for the build in wifi. Ive seen some other people are having the same issue with jellybean on other phones on verizon. Foxfi worked great on ics, 4g never dropped. streamed netflix for an hour no problems.
Anyone found a fix yet?
