Hi,
I am returning my HDX after receiving a replacement. How can I ensure all my personal data has been wiped before or send it off. It's had a couple of factory resets, is still rooted, safestrapped and on 4.2.5.
Thanks...

To my knowledge there is no sure-fire way to securely wipe ALL permanent storage on this device. Best suggestion is to remove all secondary Safestrap v4 slots and then flash CM11 or Nexus v4 to the stock slot. Then use Android's native encryption (settings->security->encrypt tablet) to scramble the contents followed by a stock 'factory reset'. Note this may leave your device in an unbootable state. Not sure how comprehensive the encryption is (eg: does it go after unused blocks) but should thwart most casual efforts to recover previous contents.
Thanks for that, but can you tell me how I'd remove the Safestrap v4 slots? Not even sure what they are to be honest!

If you don't know what they are you probably never created any. You can get an indication when booting your device. If the word 'disabled' appears on the Safestrap recovery screen you do not have any secondary slots.
What OS (rom) do you have installed?
Stock 4.2.5....nothing stating Disabled when booting. There are several 'free' slotsin Safestrap. But apart from rooting and installing Safestrap to flash the stock ROM I didn't do anything else.

For clarity I believe you mean 4.5.2
Don't worry about the slots. Just encrypt your active slot. The subsequent factory reset probably isn't necessary unless you distrust Amazon's refurb process which securely wipes the device. As noted the nuances of Android encryption are unknown (complicated by HDX hw and Safestrap) so you are confidently only protecting against casual inspection.
Yeah , that's what I'll do then. Nothing other than personal letters and pics of my kids etc...thanks for your feedback

I see this question posted all the time, but I'm reading a lot of conflicting information. As I've been searching around the net for a solid (and up-to-date) answer, I was wondering if there was a definitive answer to the following question:
Can I flash a custom ROM to the stock slot using Safestrap, remove the stock ROM from the phone, and keep the backup on my PC for later restoration?
I would assume that I should do the following:
1) Make a backup of the stock ROM (using Safestrap)
2) Wipe the Stock slot
3) Install/Restore custom ROM to the Stock slot
Am I correct in assuming this?
If there are any issues, I'd love to hear why. I'm still trying to figure out all the info. If there are any benefits/drawbacks, I'd also love to hear those. I'd consider myself a "conservative" user. I do nothing with themes and major modifications.
Thank you for any advice!
I apologize if this question has been answered elsewhere.
That works just fine and many people already have. AT&T people are in the same boat and do it too.

Just make sure you have the Odin tar file for your phone just in case something goes wrong. Me and a few others ran into some issues messing with the stock slot. Good idea to have that anyways.

Just in case someone comes across this in the future:
Everything worked as planned. No issues to report.
But doesn't this entirely contradict what the website says?
On the How-To Safestrap site:
Install: This is for flashing a .zip file to the currently active system. Currently, this is disabled for the stock system. In a future release I will enable flashing to the stock system.

And yet people are wiping and flashing to stock fine?
Cool, I will try that

Hashcode didn't support flashing to the stock slot when I used SafeStrap. You could do it, but if you ran into problems you were not to expect any help from him.
Now whether or not he disabled that option completely in newer versions of SafeStrap I'm not really sure since I'm on an mdk S4 now.

reason why its called safestrap...and has saved me many times able to get back to my stock rom slot...but we all have our own levels of risk but hashcode made safestrap the way he did for a reason.
I run 3 roms on my S4 and have no issues with memory limitations
So then this is a yes on flashing to stock? Thinking about flashing a SS rom, but not sure how it goes.
I assume I would flash the kernel modules as you have to do that with every custom rom.
If Safestrap lives on the stock system, how does it stay after you wipe? It stays on an unwipe-able area? Because it can't stay on recovery, can it?
If anything goes wrong, I could just flash the MK2 stock with Odin, correct? It wouldn't trip KNOX flag to 0x1?
Out of curiosity, if an OTA was available for stock MK2, and I had it as a custom rom, it would brick the phone or what would happen?
In Titanium Backup, you DON'T restore all the system apps, and only the user apps when migrating roms?
This would be my first time wiping/flashing a rom over the system (and not just over a rom slot), so I'm nervous as almost all people new to this sort of thing.

Well, you're asking a lot of questions that have been already answered, so here's some quick answers.
1. Flashing the modules won't hurt.
2. Safestrap lives in separate directory on your internal storage. As long as you don't wipe the internal storage, it'll still be there. However, if you flash a stock ROM into the stock slot, then Safestrap won't be run during boot and can't be activated.
3. Yes, you can always flash an OEM stock ROM. Factory images from Samsung won't set the Knox Warranty Void flag. This does NOT mean that you can downgrade to an earlier release.
4. OTAs won't brick the phone - they'll fail if you have modified anything that the OTA will be patching.
5. You should only restore user apps and data. You must have the restorecon fix for that to work. Restoring system apps is pretty risky.
None of these are new questions or new answers. Yes, there's a lot to read here, but you really need to spend the time.

Oh I remember you! You made the Saferoot method I used. Sorry for asking some dumb questions, I just wanted verification for 1, 3, and 4. I'll have to search for the restorecon fix. I'll be flashing Eclipse because I was only looking for an AOSP experience and Hyperdrive has more than I need (leading to larger rom size). The rom is going to go through a big update sometime this weekend so I'll wait for the update.

I just installed hyperdrive to the stock slot and everything works perfect.
Hi. I bought a near-mint S4 on Swappa from a seller who had already rooted it and installed a custom ROM (one similar to Samsung stock). After verifying that it worked I did a factory wipe, deleted the caches and used the existing TW recovery to install CM11, which so far I just love -- it's extremely close to the stock Android on my Nexus tablet, only with other great options like running Titanium backup and a firewall, etc. The lack of VZW and Samsung bloat is also great, of course.
However, do I need to worry that the phone could still be infected with or vulnerable to malware, perhaps because of something left over from whatever process the seller used to root the phone and install recovery? Would using the Avast firewall protect me, or would I be wiser to unroot the phone, take it back to stock and start all over again? (I'm reluctant to do that because it has the MK2 baseband and I'm afraid of not being able to get back to having a custom recovery.) Am I worrying needlessly, because the willing and installation of CM would have deleted any dangerous stuff that may have been lurking?)
This is my first time dealing with a rooted phone or a custom ROM. I really like the idea of having more control over what I run on my own phone (similar to running Linux on my computers, which I've been doing for years), but want to make sure I'm not being foolish somehow.

Since you're able to run CM11, it must be running the MDK build, which is pretty amazing as you can run what you want with the Loki exploit allowing you to bypass the locked bootloader.
If you really are concerned about what's on the phone, you can always flash a full-wipe factory MDK ROM image and start over.
DO NOT - Don't - no - never- take any factory updates. Or flash anything past MDK from Verizon. Ever.
Thank you -- I do indeed feel fortunate about having the MDK build and don't want to do anything to mess it up.
How reasonable are my concerns about some vulnerability being left on the phone by the prior owner? I did two wipes of the phone (system, data, cache and dalvik cache each time) before installing CM.

You'll be fine if you hop into recovery and do a Factory Reset where it includes the Internal Card.
Most likely your all set though with what you've done. Enjoy that MDK phone! I also have one and being able to run non Touchwiz Roms is the only way to go if you ask me.
If you have anymore questions regarding MDK feel free to hit me up or ask here... Were all here to help

Did you wipe the system on the stock slot or the slot one that you created ? If you wipe your stock slot which is a complete misuse of safestrap I am sorry but there currently is not a repair for that for this device . We are awaiting a unlocked boot loader to be able to flash anything to this device on the stock system (from brick state or fast boot). That is why it is advised not to mess with your stock system unless you are a very experienced super user . I am sorry but you are welcome to look around and see if there is any useful information here for you there are several pages in each section here . If you in fact created as a slot and are just boot looping on your slot try holding your power for over 20 seconds then release .

it's really not if you know exactly what you're doing . I would advise reading the biggest part of this whole forum though. At least reading the whole thread of which each MOD you wish to use . And with safestrap you never flash to the stock . You always create the slot and use the slot . That way if it Loop it loops directly back into safestrap . If you wipe stock system you wipe safestrap. That information is all in the safestrap thread. Along with any other problems any other user had and their possible fixes ..

I did not have a stock, I just had a fire OS backup. So after I wiped the "system", there was no system (or a broken system) in it. I know a little about how system worked. Maybe safestrap recovery relys on a existed system to start. I need to enter safestrap to invoke my backup but the LOOP has a priority to start over the safestrap . I wanna know how to enter safestrap directly ,but there is no hot key like fastboot or download Mode. I think this is the crux of my problem.
Thank you anyway.

Huh, maybe you are right. I'm impatient bcz the new terms will begin and I really need my pad to kill time...or learn English. Well I don't have any high-end Android substitute.
Thanks for the video you quoted. Previously I only read some instruction in my language which is a little not exact maybe. I would make an adequate preparation in next flashing.
I'll just get to the point.
I rooted the HDX using the towelroot app. Installed SuperSU, verified root access., all was successful thus far. At this point I installed Safestrap recovery, using the. apk.
Here's the problem. I thought I transferred the ROM and gapps package to the internal SD card. Could have sworn I did. Well I didn't. My second mistake was wiping all on the stock ROM slot once in Safestrap thinking I had the new ROM on the internal SD. Well I realized I didn't, had to leave the HDX in safestrap for a while and came back to the battery dead. Now it does not boot past the stock recovery where my options consist of reboot system or perform stock recovery. Stock recovery does nothing which is expected after my slip up.
What I'm wondering is if I can somehow flash the recovery back to my device via ADB? Or maybe the stock ROM? If not, do I have any other options.
Disclaimer: yes, I made a stupid mistake, I admit it. Please keep the flaming to a minimum.

Good find. I'll check it out. Thank you.
I have a Kindle Fire HDX 7, rooted it, installed safestrap, then CM 11 in stock slot..
Running great for agres, but suddenly some CM 11 nightly updates appear, then start to download and update.
Update doesn't work, but the tablet will go into TWRP recovery that is part of Safestrap. But it says no OS installed, so it won't boot.
It did say safes-strap disabled, but last time I turned it on it said safe-strap enabled. Still wouldn't boot, though.
Factory reset didn't help.
The tablet isn't recognized by windows, so unless I can find a way to get a new rom onto the tablet, I can't flash a new rom, so I have a brick.
This is why I don't like tablets with no SD card slot. If I had an SD card slot, no problem.
Does the mount option in TWRP do anything?
Thanks for your help.

Unfortunately there is no way to move files onto this device (specifically 3rd gen HDX running Safestrap v4) without a functioning rom. Best bet is to use the File Manager in Safestrap recovery to search the device for the CM11 zip that was originally used to populate the Stock slot. If found you might be able to use that to recover the device (install to the STOCK slot).
You mentioned a factory reset. If performed from the stock recovery menu (outside Safestrap) the device is likely toast.

I had the same issue myself (I had actually formatted the system partition and the sd card without thinking), you might try another USB port and/or another cable, even another computer if you can get access to one.
after trying to get ADB to see my tablet for 3 hours I finally moved to another USB port and it worked right away.
once it saw the tablet it only took a few moments to sideload another rom.
on a side note when it happened to me I was on an unlocked bootloader and was not using safestrap so I cant recall if the ADB sideload feature is even available in safestrap... but if so its what worked for me.

It might turn on with a long press of the power button (20-30 sec) but that will just get you to Safestrap v4 recovery. Beyond that there isn't much hope; factory reset may have killed it (resetting is a no-no with Safestrap installed). Sorry for your loss.
