Problem:
When I tap on a contact (via the dialer) often times as I scroll down the same information duplicated (four birthdays in a row, for example). Here's the issue - you see multiple same birthdays.

When editing a contact in the Contacts app (I have a non-rooted Note 4 running stock Lollipop) it pulls up all instances of that contact, and often duplicate content (multiple instances of a birthday, same phone number, etc). This is the native contacts app on my phone. I don't know if this is pure Android app or a Samsung skin
I have only added my one Google account to Android (e.g. myemail at gmail dot com). But when I edit a contact I still see 3-5 "google" instances of that contact. See below. When I edit this contact, you see the numerous "google" headers - these are the different instances of the same contact.
Any idea how to merge all this so that I don't have multiple instances of the same contact and duplicate info for the same contact?
Thanks - I consider myself pretty bright, but this has perplexed me about Android for YEARS!

That is a Samsung app. Not the stock Android app. What I would do is use a pc and go to Google contacts and remove all the others after combining the info into one contact account

I have a work calendar in Google Apps here at work which I share with my Nexus 1 and my Dell Streak 7. It won't allow me to share any details, only free/busy, so on the Android devices I see free or busy for the timeframe. No problem. At least I know something is going on and can check in on GApps to see the details if it's an event I don't recognize.
Now I've recently started noticing that events which are deleted REMAIN on my calendar as free. I've recently changed job positions and a lot of my previously recurring meetings are off my calendar now, but they still show up as Free on my phone. Gah.
Daily view.. I have NO actual meetings today OR tomorrow except for the one personal event. I have two, 9:30 and 11, that are from deleted recurring meetings. And a second at 11 I created a few minutes ago testing to see if it showed up, and sure enough it showed as busy while it was valid, then continues to show up as "free" after.

My weekly calendar. Sorry you can't see much, but all but 2 of the dark blue squares are "invalid" free entries... I tried to take a screenshot on my tablet to make it more obvious how many of these stupid things are in my calendar now, but I just kept getting black screenshots and don't have the SDK here at work.
Anyone know how to fix this? I don't see it from my personal calendar on GMail, I don't see this "free" data showing up, although it could be hiding it, not sure how else to figure out if this is specifically an Android issue or something?
Any suggestions are appreciated.
Aha, on a hunch I tried to clear Calendar Storage and all of the old events that were showing as "free" are gone! Interestingly the one I created today as a test is still showing up.
So this tells me it's definitely something Android was doing... but can't imagine why.
Maybe someone else has a better solution, but this is a decent workaround if you have a lot of recurring "Free" entries showing up. Disable Calendar Sync in Settings->Accounts->Your Google Account, then go to Settings->Applications->All and find Calendar, Force Kill, then Calendar Storage, Force Kill, and Clear Data inside of Calendar Storage. Then go back to Accounts and re-enable Calendar syncing. It'll take a few minutes to finish, then your calendar should be fresh.
FYI I don't know if this has any other affects, but AFAIK since it's all cloud based, this should not lose any data. Not sure about maintaining old entries or non-AOSP ROMs, such as Sense ROMs which might do weird combos of local/Google calendar events.
Hello there.
I just updated my Galaxy SII GT-I9100 to the latest official 4.1.2 JB, and wiped my phone beforehand so I could have everything from scratch.
All my contacts are in Gmail with hi-res pictures set there, so I did not worry about having lo-res pictures after Google supposedly fixed the picture quality issue.
Thing is, after I set my Google account on the fresh installation, it indeed synced each contact's picture, but in lo-res!
I noticed sometimes, when I opened up the contact and waited a few moments, the picture was automatically changed for the hi-res version, as if the cellphone only downloaded it "on demand".
Does anyone know how to truly make it download every contact's HD picture properly without having to open each contact's picture? :fingers-crossed:
Thanks a lot! :good:
Anyone with a clue?
Hi guys. Anyone knows this one?
Not sure if this is what you are looking for, it more of a work around.. but I upload all my "Contact Photo" to a private album on Google+ (Using Picasa to upload/replace/etc from the album as needed) - Any photo you upload to Google+ is going to appear in your Gallery on your device (just note there is no way to "Hide" them from the Gallery, so they will always appear)
As you can see (and no comments on picture; its my momma) That the pictures look a whole lot better by using Google+
(the blur is from me using Instagram and altering the picture)

Nah, that's not quite it mate. I did the same thing on Picasa, by the way.
But my contacts all have pictures stored on my Gmail account, so when I add my Gmail account to the phone the pictures automatically get downloaded. Problem is they are all pixelated.
When I open a contact and wait a few seconds (if connected to the internet), the lo-res pics gets replaced by a hi-res pic. But ONLY if I open each contact and then wait some seconds for the hi-res pic to download...
Hi there. I really hope this can be solved as have looked everywhere today and no luck.
Also, really sorry the long description. But this is best I can describe it with as best info provided
Having an issue with WhatsApp strangely backing up/saving GIFs that I am looking at/scrolling through when replying to someone, and its backing up/saving the GIFs to my Google photos/ OnePlus Gallery.
All I am doing is looking at the gifs, not saving them, not clicking them. Just looking/scrolling through them. If I scroll/look through 6 gifs, it will save 6 in total. If I look at 20 gifs, will save 20 etc... I did a test to see what settings made this happen;
-Show media gallery is ticked on, and the Media Auto Download (using mobile datal, Wi-Fi and roaming) is on made the GIF backup happen.
-Then, having Show media gallery on, and Media Auto Download off still made it happen.
-Then having both off still backs them up.
I have found that if I view the GIFs in WhatsApp when replying, then go to Google photos>Device folders, it all of a sudden loads the GIFs I viewed in a folder called gif preview cache. I then go to OnePlus Gallery and then it automatically shows them there!. There is some correlation here but can't figure out This is the odd thing, if I was to view GIFs in WhatsApp again, then view in OP Gallery first, it doesn't show them. I have to go to Google photos> Device folders first for it to somehow display them there, then the gallery when I go to it after!
Does this make sense? Its been driving me nuts!
I also Emailed WhatsApp and they said: On Android, it's not possible to preview WhatsApp media files without downloading them to your phone. Auto-download only controls whether this is done automatically, or upon tapping on the file . Remember, I am not clicking on the media/GIF which saves it. I am merely looking/scrolling through them!!

New to me V30 and Gmail shows only last 30 days of messages.
Any messages show up only on laptop or desktop. Nothing from March 2019 show on phone.
Have checked Settings, Accounts, Google and Sync -- there is no date limit on any of these settings. Have also checked Settings from Desktop logon to Gmail and there is no apparent location or setting that allows or restricts "days to show" -- or I am not seeing the setting.
Where may I adjust it to unlimited or at least 90 days ?

It's a simple app setting.
Has nothing to do with V30, but the Android Gmail app. Default is 30 days, but you can set for more if you wish. There's also app settings for auto downloading attachments, etc.

In the Gmail app settings, click on your email address. Retention period is customized per account. Some people have more than one Gmail account.
You can also go to gmail.com on your phone web browser if you want to see your computer view.
Have only 1 email account and it is gmail
When I click on Accounts and select my gmail account, a long list of permissions to various parts show up, calendar, sync etc but nothing that has a days to send./sync value
Holding down the area with email does nothing and Sync button by itself has no function other that sync now
Still elusive -- if step by step can be posted, would help a lot.
Also tried on laptop, logged on in normal desktop mode and Settings does not have an area to set anything with value in days -- in fact, it shows All mail in Inbox from years ago to present day

In the Contacts tab of the Phone app I select "three points", then "Settings" -> "Display options". Then I set
Sort by - Last name
Name format - Last name first
Nevertheless, the contacts are always displayed being sorted alphabetically by First name! Irrespective of the setting "Sort by".
Phone ver. 82.0.448635518
Device model RMX3301, build RMX3301_11_A.16
realme UI 3.0
I hope, that annoying "feature" can be repaired.
I have Google contacts. To display by last name in Google contacts choose Fix & Manage at the bottom of the screen. Choose settings. In the settings screen set Sort by to LAST NAME and also set name format to LAST NAME first.

Thanks. Yes, I am using the Contacts app, and in it the sorting is correct in accordance with the mentioned settings.
But my question is about the Phone app. It has "Contacts" tab in it. It behaves independently of the Contacts application. It would be convenient if it was working correctly as well.
Perhaps somebody knows how to fix it. Or, I hope, developers read this and repair the bug.
In display options (in the phone app) I choose sort by last name and name format last name first and this works for me.
P.S. I asked a friend with another smartphone, which is not Realme, but Android 12. In his device the Google Phone application sorts contacts correctly, as the user setting prescribes. I suspect, the problem is related to Realme UI rather than the Google Phone application itself.

Oh, thanks for checking! It is astonishing that in my case the setting is ignored. I have all the latest updates installed.

I do have exactly the same issue with my realme GT 2: contacts are not sortable by name in Phone by Google app (contacts tab), even if properly set in parameters.
It does work correctly in Contacts app.
Phone app is 90.0.477356402 and my GT 2 is in its latest realme UI 3 update (RMX3311_11_A.20).
Has anyone find a solution ?
I haven't. I think the best way would be to reach the developers., but I don't know how. It's interesting if this "feature" is due to some of our settings or not. However, I have no time to play with it, i.e. to reset the phone completely to the factory state to check if the behaviour remains the same.
I'm now on Android 13 C12 and this bug still isn't fixed.
I use Google dialer and it doesn't register this problem.
Ak je kontakt uložený správne, funguje mi to.
Edit:
I understood after reading the first post. Contacts are still organized by first name.
