My phone kept switching to edge because the wcdma signal in my area is very low but 3 bars of edge is worse than 1 bar of hsdpa+ (no lte in enterprise al) so I choose wcdma only and I always have signal. You can set preferences or choose certain signals only but be aware if you change to a specific signal only and it's not there you will loose service... If you ever need to reset the settings and can't remember the code removing the sim card and reinstalling it resets back to default.
Here's where I found this I take no credit but I can confirm it works on the at&t version of the One.

I thought I saw it in the user manual. Looking at tech specs, no LTE. I read this thread because I wanted to disable Edge, I would rather have no data connection at that time then the frustration of NOTHING connecting on edge.

Idk it should have something very similar to that menu but I've never had the device so I don't really know.

This is all I get.
Awesome! I just got mine today (Australian version) and don't have the mobile carrier menu, which I think is ridiculous. This did the trick for me to disable LTE
This is the procedure I have used to disable LTE after finally figuring out that my "missed calls with no notification whatsoever" issue (unless caller leaves a VM) was caused by having LTE enabled. Something to do with the One having to switch to HSDPA for voice and the handoff not working right. Sucks not using LTE but I can't be missing calls....
Works a treat, too bad we have to dive into a Service Menu to choose our network preferences.... Thanks ATT...

I installed an app that takes me right to the service menu so I don't have to use the dialer each time.

How long will this maintain your selected network? I've used this many times on past phones, but carrier settings have frequently reverted the setting automatically. at the least, it will reset itself on boot (which isn't necessarily that big of a deal, unless you're Dev-ing and rebooting frequently.). If rooted, there are a number of ways to be able to easily select your desired connection type and have it stick. glad to hear this has worked for your needs so far.

It will revert back after air plane mode/disabling data and on restarts. I just use the app if I notice I'm on edge which is rare and pretty obvious. This is my first smart phone ever since my htc excaliber windows phone that I haven't run unofficial software on. it's just a great package and I feel I'll deal with more issues rooted than I do stock. Can't wait for 4.3 next week the ONLY thing I miss is battery percentage in notification bar lol
I would like to have WCDMA/GSM (auto), but that option is not present.
I'm guessing WCDMA preferred would do the trick? I currently have GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto but I don't use LTE..

Here's a little trick for anyone that's rooted - If you want to be able get the Preferred network mode list when selecting Settings>Mobile Data>Network Mode, you have to change your sku ID in /system/customize/ACC/default.xml. Using a text editor (I always just use the text editor built in to Root Browser), find
Code:
<item type="integer" name="sku_id">7</item>
almost at the end. 7 is ATT's sku, and gives you things like ATT's Data Icons and lying signal bars, but will also enable the NFC icon in the status bar when it's on and remove the Preferred Network mode from Settings. Changing this to 11 will set it as TMobile - Tmo data icons and other tmo settings (I believe T Mobile has the Preferred Network mode settings as well). Changing it to 42 will set it with WWE device settings, so you'll get generic HTC data icons, signal bars that actually work, network mode settings, etc. Obviously Save and Reboot after making the change.

i want to set my network settings to 2G only, what setting should i use? GSM Auto or GSM Only? Also, does changing these 2G/3G/LTE settings by dialing *#*#4636#*#* have any effect on anything else besides the network mode?
Hi All,
I know its a topic which has been addressed differently in different threads. I am a user from India and have a GSM SIM. I have got a Verizon S4 phone. I tried using it with Vodafone SIM and get a problem in using it. Surprisingly a NOTE 2 from Verizon works just fine. I am able to use it for data with 3G but not able to use it for voice. Following steps have been tried already.
- Default Options of using Global Mode and GSM/UMTS ** Doesnt search the network at all.
- Hidden Menu Changes using # codes. ** Shows network but emergency mode only.
- Phone Info app to change the mode. ** Shows network but emergency mode only.
- RF Band change using the hidden menu. ** Shows network but emergency mode only.
It does say that it has GSM radio but cant be used for some software reason I suppose. I checked with Verizon Rep and was told that it cannot be used in India with a GSM SIM and would need the Verizon SIM only to connect with International Roaming.
Can I install a I-9505 ROM on this and then would it pick up the GSM signal for voice and data. Please help.
I don't think your Verizon rep is correct. I bought a Verizon S4 just before going to Europe for 1 month. I used first a gsm SIM card from Germany, and then a gsm card from France. I had to add APN's to get data (I used "offline sim APN database" from the market to help get the necessary APN info), but had no trouble with voice or data for my entire trip. The gps and navigation services on the phone were extremely valuable on a couple of occasions, as was the wifi hotspot. In France, you can purchase 2 GB of data service for 20 Euros. I checked with Verizon global services ( 908-559-4899 outside the US or 800-711-8300 from inside ) before I left, and the Verizon S4 was sim unlocked out of the box. They did not make a big deal of my plan to use other SIM cards either.

Installed WamanLite I9505 ROM
Hello All,
I found that Wanam Lite I-9505 ROM can be installed on Verizon S4. I installed it and patched it with Loki-Doki patch to boot up as I got the Verizon Software error. Yet my phone doesnt pick up the GSM signal for voice and SMS. It picks up the signal and I am able to browse internet on it but no calls or SMS. Please help...!!
Is there any way that I can install or flash a regular GSM radio over the phone ? Or tweak it in someway to use the GSM signal as primary for voice and sms.

I have also Verizon's S4 (i545) and use it in GSM network with only one small problem - it will not send SMS with in-ROM SMS apk to international-formatted numbers (+380-XX-XXX and so on), but send without problem to local-formatted numbers (XX-XXX...) All the rest is working good.
Could you tell me please - how did you get to install i9505's ROM on your device? I have also Verizon's error after installation, and don't know how to run it...
Hi I too have the vzw s4 in india.. and niether voice nor sms is functioning on it.
By rooting it and installing apn manager I was somehow able to get the data 3g working for vodafone ind.
I too am struggling to find a solution to this.
Ive haventvyet flashed it. I came across a guy who said he will be able to get it working but somehow I havent yet been abke to follow up with him.
Guess we both are on the same boat.
Lets keep in touch and update if any of us finds a solution to this.

You all can try to flash my port of ARHD 2.0 ROM, that can be found it this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2346365
It is fully GSM and as international as regular GSM-version of S4. CDMA can be turned on only on hidden test application. Everything else is working and was tested in different networks.
I too created a post seeking help in this regard but didn came across anything concrete yet.
Everyone out here believes it to be a world phone and some have even been using the gsm network in europe but its not working in india.
Ive failed to understand that how come its detecting signals with functioning data is not working on either voice or sms.
Tmobile and atnt gs4 guess have this service menu from where they can be network unlocked explicitly..but unfortunately I havent yet come any such thing for vzw gs4.

I tried installing the ARHD 2.0 ROM but still the same issue persists. The phone picks up the signal for data but when tried selecting network manually or automatic using the GSM / UMTS option, it says disable data to search networks, when data is disabled, the phone shows available networks says phone registered to network but the status still says Emergency Calls Only. Also if tried dialing a phone it says no network available. There has to be something in the modem settings which can be tweaked through the service menu which will change the use of GSM for voice and data and not use CDMA.

Did you do a full wipe when flashing ROM? It is mandatory. You will lose all your data though. If there will be no changes after full wipe - then try to install this card into another phone and ckeck if voice calling is working.

I did a full wipe. I have 2 Galaxy S4's and also an Optimus G. The card that I am using is my regular SIM card so its not an issue with the card for sure. The ROM was installed on both the phones and neither of them picked up the signal for voice and SMS.

Ok. To go and chose type of radio-band you may install Battery Monitor Widget from Google Play (well, the main purpose of this app is different, but it is what comes first in my mind). Put it's widget on the desktop, open it and go for bottom right button, named Test. There you can first menu (Device Info) and there you will be able to change all variations of the radio bands and their combinations, available for i545. If non of the combinations will help - mosty probably your operator works on unsupported for this phone cellular format.

I have the Phone Info app which allows band select. Tried on all possible modes. Same issue persists. Strangely the Note 2 purchased from Verizon works flawlessly without any mods or changes. I am thinking of giving to some professional phone guy who may have code level flashing or modding tools to try and fiddle around with settings of the modem or the radio to pick up the signal here.

Hey phrozenwire, I am able to use both voice n sms now in my VZW GS4.
And I literally did nothing to make the voice n sms functional. I too had troubles for like 2 weeks and it didn work for me then.
I rooted the phone to add apn settings and the data got activated. But today morning when I woke up ... surprise surprise .. it began to work.. rcvd sms and calls and I was so happy. . Last I remember I switched on the power save mode and my cell fell down twice and guess it did the trick for me.
Thanks all for your help and comments.

I finally cracked how to domestic unlock the N900P (Sprint Note 3) for use with T-Mobile/AT&T or any other U.S. GSM Carrier. Im writing up the tutorial now and finishing up the tools required to make it a little easier. However i spent over a month working on this and am asking for donations before i release the tutorial. As much as i hate to do it my car is on its last leg and i desperately need to find a new one. So please help me out as i hope getting this phone unlocked helps you all. I'm currently using mine on Straight Talk (can't beat $45/Mo using AT&T Towers). This is a fairly simple procedure it just has quite a few steps but if you follow every step to the letter it is cake. I am really trying to get to around $2000 just to find myself a little clunker so any donation is appreciated. I will post up a video for proof that i have accomplished this just so you all know this is not any kind of scam.
Disclaimer: YOU MUST HAVE YOUR DEVICE INTERNATIONALLY UNLOCKED FROM SPRINT FOR THIS TO WORK. I AM WORKING ON INTERNATIONALLY UNLOCKING WITHOUT SPRINT BUT IT IS REQUIRED IN THE MEANTIME. ALL OTHER TOOLS REQUIRED I WILL PROVIDE. YOU DO NOT NEED AN ACTIVE SIM CARD IT WILL SHOW BARS AND CARRIER INFO WITH INACTIVE CARD.
Disclaimer 2: ROOT IS REQUIRED FOR MULTIPLE STEPS AND THIS PROCESS WILL MORE THAN LIKELY TRIP KNOX. I AM WORKING ON A WAY AROUND THIS BUT IN THE MEANTIME THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY DOES TRIP KNOX. YOUR WARRANTY IS NOW VOID!
Disclaimer 3: IF YOU BREAK YOUR PHONE THEN YOU BROKE YOUR PHONE I AM IN NO WAY RESPONSIBLE. (I BRICKED MY PHONE MANY TIMES TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THIS PROCESS A SIMPLE ODIN FLASH AND WAS GOOD TO GO.

Tutorial to Unlock Sprint Galaxy Note 3 For T-Mobile/AT&T/MVNO's
Tools required:
Hidden Menu Enabled(modified for galaxy note 3): http://goo.gl/y4k2EG
MI3 modem (modified to be flashed via odin): http://goo.gl/W0f3Za
Odin 3.07 or 3.09 (google for it theres a million mirrors of it)
Device must already be internationally unlocked via sprint for this to work (must perform uicc unlock from system updates menu) im working on a way to do this without sprint but for now this is how it is)
Region Lock Away: (Free on chainfires thread or consider buying market donate version) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2470551
Device must be rooted: (rooting via this method will trip knox however the modem flash we have to do will likely trip it as well): http://download.chainfire.eu/362/CF-Root/CF-Auto-Root/CF-Auto-Root-hltespr-hltespr-smn900p.zip
Any root browers from play store
ServiceMode Shortcut: Grab from play store
prl helper or anything with an apn shortcut: Grab from play store
Step 1: We need to root the device so put device in download mode holding vol down+home+power while it is off. Flash cf auto root to obtain root (this will void knox).
Step 2: Grab a root browser, ServiceMode Shortcut, PRL Helper, and Region Lock Away and install your att/tmobile sim.
Step 3: Place device back into download mode. PAY ATTENTION HERE: you need to add the mi3 modem to pda and uncheck auto reboot. LEAVE ON F. RESET TIME CHECKED. After flash has completed remove battery from your phone place it back into download mode and flash mi3 modem again this time leaving auto reboot checked. When your device boots up to to settings->general->about device and check your baseband version to make sure it ends in mi3. if it does not redo step 3.
Step 4: Run regionlock away (not required for this all to work just for good measure), And switch your device into gsm/umts only mode in your settings menu.
Step 5: Plug your device in and enable usb debugging. run hidden menu enabler. open TestMode Menu. Follow these steps perfectly.
1. click ue setting and info
2. click setting
3. click protocol
4. click as- go to security control and make sure fake security is on, ciphering is off, and integrity is on. after you have seet these hit menu back twice to get back to ue setting and protocol menu.
5. open nas-go to network control go to band selection and pick number 5 wcdma/gsm mode only. after hit menu back.
6. Click pref mode set and choose number 2 gsm wcdma only. menu back once
7.hit aquision order and choose umts_gsm. hit menu back until youre back at ue setting menu.
8. open gcf and click number 1 and make sure it is on. hit menu back to ue settings.
9.go to sim and then sim class control. make sure umts on and gsm on both show. if not click to enable. hit menu back once
10.hit bip block control. hit number 3 bip block off. once complete go to bip block status to verify it is in fact off.
11. go all the way back to main menu. hit protocol state, sim information, check nv, and make sure it shows sim lock is disable, spr bip unblocked, and sha256 on or off shouldnt matter. ( i have had mine off and on and it seems to work either way)(mine is currently on)
12. power cycle device.
13. when it comes on device SHOULD show service it still may not.
14. get into your root browser, go system, and open your build.prop with a text editor
15. add these lines to the very bottom to enable apn editing. (credit to ingenium13)
ril.sales_code=LOL
ro.csc.sales_code=LOL
16. reboot device once more. now use prl helper or your apn shortcut and create a new apn for your carrier. delete all the sprint ones and make sure you highlight the circle next to your newly created apn. reboot once more.
17. device should come up with full service bars and data/mms active. (if you have an inactive sim card it does not always show service)(my inactive att card would show service my inactive tmobile would not)
18. Donations appreciated now you should be 100% unlocked. if you need to undo this for any reason see post 3 to get fully back on sprint.
19. Profit!

Steps to get back 100% to sprint.

congrats youre back on sprint

It'll stop working on sprint while its working on gsm it can easily be undone
There is no way to toggle it? Lije it does when you go overseas? Ie just insert the gsm sim card? Any chance of that in the future? Just curious. I am out of my scope of knowledge with this kind of stuff.
I'm working on a way to as I still have sprint myself as well as my straight talk. However at this point in time sprint needs to basically be disabled. If the phone detects sprint it won't pick up on gsm even in gsm/umts mode. In addition the phone needs to operate in wcdma preferred which is not currently an option available in the default Samsung menu. This menu in fact gets changed to only reflect gsm options and does not offer CDMA as a working option.

Will 4G LTE work? I assuming not because the carriers work off different frequencies that the 4G radio that's in Sprint's version of the Note 3. Is this correct?
huh post is gone. the XDA app is not very reliable. anyway makes sense now sprint phones very aggressively revert to sprint towers so if it see's any it reverts.
I am assuming "getting" it to work was the hard part so easier methods of switching should be possible even a dual boot would be a nice clean solution
I bet a lot of people will appreciate being "able" to do this. one phone now works with everyone.
another method??

Hi everyone.
I did all the steps carefully but in the step 11. Mine says SIM LOCK ENABLED and SPR BIP Disabled. I bought my phone from Ebay as a BAD ESN PHONE, im from Dominican Republic so a BAD ESN Phone works without a problem when u unlocked it. The 1st i tried with my sim from CLARO DR it doesnt shows any sign to be blocked it didnt asked for a PIN to unlock. So i thought it was unlocked.
Sorry for my bad english.

That's faster than some high speed internet lol
First off let me start by saying that you will need root access on your phone which will void your warranty. So if you care about your warranty stop reading now.
Secondly I'll tell you right now this is only confirmed to work on this model of phone(sch-i545) with build LRX22C.I545VRUOF1 on AT&T. You will only have H+/4G signal NO LTE. H+/4G seems to have virtually unnoticeable speed differences in my opinion. If this is a deal breaker stop reading now. If you wish to try this on other networks feel free and let me know if it works. Now on with the show.
Step 1.
Gain root access on your phone. If you need to know how please check out this link. This is the method I used to root mine.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/general/root-of1-t3249971
Step 2.
Enable "hidden menu" feature on your phone.
To do this you will need to download Root Browser and superSU from the play store.
Once both are installed and set up use root browser(a window will pop up asking for you to grant it root access. Select yes or "grant") to access files.
Find and open file named efs. Inside that file open another called carrier.
Inside the carrier folder is a file called HiddenMenu
Open this file as a text Document using RB Text Editor
Once open it will say OFF. Change it to ON and then click save.
Next go back and find a folder called system.
Inside this folder scroll down and find a file called build.prop
Open this with RB Text Editor.
And the following text to the top of this page: sys.hiddenmenu.enable=1
Click save and close all apps and reboot phone.
Step 3.
Once phone has rebooted open your phone dialer and enter *#27663368378#
A service mode window will open up.
Click on LTE
Then click on PREF MODE Set
Then click on GSM_WCDMA_ONLY
Close and reboot phone.
Once your phone loads back up you should have H+/4G (depends on your area) and you should be able to send and receive text messages, make and receive calls.
You will need to set up an APN for AT&T if you didn't already after you rooted your phone. Settings for those can be found on AT&T'S website.
After you reboot a window will pop up asking you to chose a network. Click cancel.
Like I said in the beginning if you want to try this with other carriers feel free to let us know how it works for you. If you have any issues with this method or have questions feel free to ask. Good luck and I hope you are pleased with my method.
Thanks for the info there another way of doing this. Which does not involve coding. It requires rooting, and loading a custom rom. If you root your phone using your methods then use flash fire to down load stang5litre version of lolipop. Afterwards you can go to the play store and download advanced signal status app. You can use this to toggle between gsm and lte and other networks. select gsm and you will be able to text but you will not have 4g lte . I got it to allow my s4 to send texts on t mobile. at&t also uses gsm so it should work on at&ts network also.

I had that same problem but that was with samsung default rom and rooted. After rooting it i was able to load one of stang5litre's custom roms. THis allowed me to acess that portion using the signal status app. His custom rom http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/development/stang5litre-ediition-5-0-t3132555

Yeah I downloaded that one. Not sure why the app didn't work for me. How long ago did you do this method? Is it possible something has been updated since you did it?
I can get text messaging working now but have one other issue. I cannot change the default voicemail setting so that the phone doesn't try to dial *86.
I have two S4's, one on 4.3, and one on 5.0.1. On the 4.3 phone, I can edit the number the phone dials for voicemail no problem, and have full working voicemail with T-mo. But on the 5.0.1, I try to edit this, it allows me to change it, but after clicking OK to the prompt that the change was accepted, it goes back to *86.
The 5.0.1 phone also does not show any notification when a voicemail is left, the 4.3 phone does...
EDIT: HOLY CRAP NEVERMIND, changing the default network preference using your method also fixed the voicemail issue and now I can change the voicemail preference... WTF LOL... I've been working on this for HOURS trying to get this fixed. Why would changing the network type allow you to change the stupid voicemail setting??!

So you followed my method and everything worked for you? The dialer code for the hidden menu and everything?
I did all the steps and worked fine I'm using a Movistar carrier it's GSM I belive used the 2 bands speaking of LTE and got h+ working already but no signs of 4G so I belive need to test speed to see if I notice any diference
H+ is 4G bascially. I did a speed test on mine and it's right around the same speed. I'm glad to hear my method was helpful for someone. I hadn't received and confirmation from anyone that it worked.
Does anyone know how to get around the mms compression limitation? I can only send smaller mms files not larger on verizon phones through att network.

I thought I saw something in either the build prop file or the csc features file. I can take a look in a bit for you.

Alternatively, you can download and install "phoneinfo" by vndnguyen from the PlayStore. Since your phone is already rooted, you can use the "Secret Codes" menu to display all the secret codes and access the menu that was referenced from dialing *#27663368378#. (Just another way to display the hidden menu if you don't feel comfortable editing the system files.)
APN settings for Tracfone as of 4/22/2020
For those who love their SCH-I545s and don't feel like switching phones just because Verizon killed off their CDMA, you may (depending on coverage) be able to use the phone with TracFone /AT&T (AT&T-compatible SIM), until early 2022, when AT&T plans to kill their UMTS/HSPA. I have done this, and after working through the SNAFUs with TracFone, my SCH-I545 is fully working. Voice, Data, SMS, MMS are all there, just a little slower than 4G/LTE, but quite tolerable in my area. I have a Sony Experia XZ2 Compact, and it gets 4G/LTE (with same SIM/APN settings), but I am mothballing it and sticking with my SG4, for now.
*After* you put the AT&T SIM in (not sure if I activated it first), you can add a new APN with the following settings:
NAME: TRACFONE
APN: RESELLER
AUTH_TYPE: None
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS PROXY: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS PORT: 80
MMS_APN_TYPE: default,mms,supl

MVNO TYPE: GID
MVNO VALUE: deff
I recently purchased a refurbished phone Samsung Galaxy S21 5G. I just got it yesterday, and found that I am not able to use my mobile network. The sale said it is factory unlocked, and according to the descriptions, it should work just fine with my US Mobile SuperLTE network as well. When I switched on the phone, I see Verizon on the screen and so, I assume that it was locked to Verizon in the past.
When I tried to change the network settings, specifically the APN settings, I get the message "Access Point Name settings are not available for this user." The three dots on the top with reset to default is also greyed out along with Network mode in the previous page. When I click Network Operators and try to connect to the network manually, I am only able to connect to Verizon Wireless and no other. But, calling and messaging seems to work fine. Is it that the unlock process has not been completed properly? Did any of you face the same problem before? It would be great if there is something that I could do to unblock the APN settings as the rest of the phone works really well. The specific model is SM-G991U.
Thanks!

So, you need to go into the settings menu and find about phone, software info. What you want to find is the CSC information.
It will basically look something like this: XAA / XAA-XAA / XAA (or some other letters like VZW or ATT or TMB etc etc.
What taht will tell you is very helpful in determining what rom the phone is running and what kind of device it was originally. Find that in your device and post it and people will help you to figure out what it means.

Thank you so much for your reply. I looked through the software section in the about section. I found the following codes about the rom.

So the csc info is complicated, I'm no expert on it. But it does look like the OYN indicates it's a multi csc rom. It does have XAA as a part of the code, and that indicates it's 'open' for that specific part. But all the others are VZW. So it's running a vzw rom, obviously.
Your sim US Mobile uses both verizon and t-mobile networks. So it working for calls and texts makes sense, as a vzw phone. You could use patched Odin and flash a different (open) rom, but first you should verify that the device really is unlocked from vzw.
Best way to do that would probably be to insert another carriers sim card and see if it can make calls / texts. If not, it's not unlocked. But are you saying everything works now except mobile data? IOW, no internet access?
I had an international sim card at hand and I put it in. Interestingly the APN settings are no longer blocked. But, I do get a notification from setup wizard saying the inserted sim is not from Verizon and some services may not be available. But, messaging still seemed to work and I was also receiving 4G.

Oh then yer okay. That message from verizon can be gotten rid of a couple of ways; 1) use adb commands to disable the specific packages 2) use patched Odin and flash a different rom
VZW is the only rom I think that does that, and it's very annoying. I don't remember exactly which packages have to be disabled, but search google and use xda and vzw in keywords and u should find it.
The 2nd option would be my choice. It would do away with vzw crap and with an open rom you may find volte and vowifi will work also.
cheers
Thank you so much for your reply. That sounds great! To just give it a try, I tried putting in a TMobile sim and phone restarted to install software for TMobile. After that the APN settings were unlocked and now I am also able to connect to the internet using my US Moblile sim. The only problem is the the network mode is greyed out.
This rom I think only recognizes network from major telecom providers. So, just flashing with an unlocked rom would just help to unlock all the features and also remove telecom specific crap. I will try to flash it today.
Thank you again!
I also just flashed the stock firmware which is fully unlocked. And there is no bloatware from telecom OEM's. I am now able to use the network and set the APN's, but the Network Mode is still greyed out. Is it possible to know why? I am guessing that if the phone is fully unlocked, I should be able to change the Network Mode. Is there any other info that I can give you to help understand what is happening? I do not see vowifi as well.
