3G vs 4G - E 2015 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all!
I was thinking of getting the 3G version, since 4G is almost absent in my country, but I heard SD200 performs poorly - choppiness and noticeable lag during usage. So, fellow xda members, whats your take on this? Do you regret your buying the SD200 Moto E? Also what's your Screen on time like? (I'd like input from the 4G users too for the sake of comparison ofc.)

I have both kinds. The 3G version (otus) gives noticeably better battery life (around 30% more standby, 15% more screen on). The 4G version (surnia) is around 50% faster in benchmarks, but it isn't very noticeable in practice. Neither lag, provided you use an ad blocker when browsing (AdAway), but animations on surnia are slightly smoother. For whatever reason, I actually slightly prefer otus, as it has more "charm" to it for me, though that's totally arbitrary. The 4G version (surnia) will probably receive updates for longer, since it shares the same SoC as the new Moto G (osprey).
For screen on time, I get around 5.5 hours on surnia and 6.5 hours on otus. Standby time for otus on CyanogenMod is amazing - I can go 2 full weeks without a charge when not using it much (2 hours SOT). For similar very light usage, surnia only lasts around 10 days standby on CM.

Thanks a lot. I think you single handedly reinforced my decision to go with the 3G version.

Battery usage with the E LTE is highly dependent on your usage. A month or two back I posted screenshots with over 7hrs SOT, and I noticed with WiFi that would be closer to 8-9, sometimes 10.
One reason I bought the VZ variant was for the cheap price, but more importantly the LTE speeds are good compared to HSPA+. When outdoors I've seen 30mbps+, while not as high as the 70 on my ZF2, this speed is still good considering the tower congestion during the day. Indoors reception is fine considering the lack of B12 for T-Mobile.
Lastly overall system performance is adequate. I compared it briefly with a Nexus 4 and the E was competitive. Obviously the lower RAM amount leads to worse multitasking, however, running 2-3 apps remains doable. Also I should add that the phone boots quickly and it can handle games (Batman was one that ran pretty well ).

What is the price difference? I would go with 4g model for sure.

It's more than the price. Its about buying something that I won't get full use out of & possibly better battery life.

But if there isn't a big difference who would buy something worse. Snapdragon 200 is really old cpu

Purchasing the 3G or 4G variants might cost more in your country, but this is US pricing.
If you plan on keeping the phone for awhile like me, you'd want to keep the best variant. Fast data speeds and battery are very important to me, which is why I switched from a Zenfone 2 to the Moto E. The performance is definitely tolerable, though by 2017 I'd want a Snapdragon 820 phone.

Atrix 4G Screen smoothness & framerates

There's a chance of me purchasing an Atrix 4G and would like to ask some question beforehand.
1) Why do people say not suitable for Bell device on ROM? Is this the worldwide version? And not AT ver.?
2) How smooth is the screen, I mean when swiping, since I came from a iPhone 4 to HTC HD2 and I didn't like the screen as much.
3) Framerates in games? Any much difference compared to LG 2X (Seem some benchmark like 10fps-15fps average lost etc)
4) Does every or most games work? I mean support the resolution?
5) How would the quality be in 1080p in the future update since its a 5MP camera?
6) How many RAM in bootup? 750ish?
7) Battery life? Heavy & Average
8) I've heard the Atrix can get quite hot like the 1st gen snapdragon? Or is it the battery?
Regards, I'm sure a few have already asked this or looking for the same answers.
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA App
1) Why do people say not suitable for Bell device on ROM? Is this the worldwide version? And not AT ver.?
Ans: ATnT version released first and got i think two updates (mostly bugs fixed) and due to this reason developers started working on ATnT and developing it mostly, but as soon as Global Generic version will release bye bye ATnT.
P.S:Root is available for all devices (bell and ATnT.
2) How smooth is the screen, I mean when swiping, since I came from a iPhone 4 to HTC HD2 and I didn't like the screen as much.
Ans:After a fresh reboot choppy for 5 min max after that no lag at all.
3) Framerates in games? Any much difference compared to LG 2X (Seem some benchmark like 10fps-15fps average lost etc)
Ans:Most of the games are now optimized for Tergra2 so no more FPS problems.
4) Does every or most games work? I mean support the resolution?
Ans:Yeah.
5) How would the quality be in 1080p in the future update since its a 5MP camera?
Ans:I think 1080p recording will be ok. after all it is a mobile phone what u expect a 60fps video ???
6) How many RAM in bootup? 750ish?
Ans:With the help of Android System Information i am able to check that 818mb of ram is showed (must be reserved by GPU and DOC ****) and out of 818 570mb ram is available for user and after usage of 2-3 days i am still having 400+ available ram for usage and no slowing down or lag any ware ever.
7) Battery life? Heavy & Average
Ans:My friend play lots of Fruit ninja on my mobile (1-2 hours straight) and that wont even budge battery. And i use internet via Wifi quite a lot. so Heavy usage 1 day and if u use aveerage (sms calls and email then 1.5-2 days max)
8) I've heard the Atrix can get quite hot like the 1st gen snapdragon? Or is it the battery?
Ans:1Ghz Dual core phone (processor with 6-8 cores {audio,GPU.etc}) little hotness is there not burning hand and stuff.
P.S:heavy usage can even make iPhone warm (personal experience).
Hope this answers ur concerns.

[Q] samsung vibrant VS samsung galasy s 4g ??

I currently have samsung vibrant ,its battery drains too fast ,might be some problem with it
I have the option of replacing it with another vibrant or samsung galaxy s 4g
which one is better ?
I have heard that samsung galaxy s 4g has only 512 MB internal while the vibrant has 16GB
is that too little to the way that makes it defective or to impede downloading apps on it (since most of the apps should be downloaded on the internal memory )?if so is there any solution for that rather than rooting the phone?
I love the idea of having a front facing camera and a better battery life
but im concerned about that memory issue

I think you're mixing up internal storage (16gb) and RAM (512mb). I don't think you need to worry since those totals are exactly the same as the regular vibrant.

no the internal storage of the samsung galaxy s 4g in only 1 GB of which only 512 mb for apps ,tmobile usually take about 200 mb to preload apps on the phone !
I think you are confused about the memory issue.
Anyway, find out which phone has more dev support, and get that one.

Vibrant has more dev support but 4G have more official support but the memory is a huge problem because it will be hard to update the phone since it has so little space

Vibrant = 16GB Internal Mem w/expandable possible, No FFC
Galaxy S 4G = 1GB Internal w/expandable possible, w/FFC

Vibrant is better except gps and stock Rom performance.
Oh, and the ffc.
Hspa+ download speeds are not consistently good enough that you will beat the vibrant 3G consistently, since I could get almost Mbps down with mine in hspa+ market.
Maybe I'm being ignorant, but if a 3G vibrant can't hit 7.2 down, neither will any "4g" vibrant.
That's why I'm not into high speed hspa+ devices. You get terrible battery life on them for not much, if any benefit.
I think the only benefit is better upload speeds but my 3G vibrant uploads at 2.5+ Mbps in an hspa+ market which is fast enough for most any task.
Get a 3G vibrant cheap and install a custom rom of you like to tinker. It's a better value for the monetary investment, IMO.

I have both and Galaxy S 4G is simply better than Vibrant.
1. Better battery life
2. Better GPS
3. Better speed (best 14.3 MBits/s vs 6.2 MBits/s on Vibrant)
4. FFC
5. Better display (personal opinion)
After deleting bloatware, without doing FOTA mod, I have availaible 274 MB.

First of all, the vibrant is a 7.2 mbps device. The 4g will not consistently get over 7.2 for the vast majority of people so that's a wash IMO.
Battery life isn't that much better. Its only a 10% increase in battery size.
The GPS is the biggest gain IMO, but the storage is more important. I find the vibrants GPS is fine for accuracy. Where it actually fails is how damn long it takes to lock. This affects people which turn GPS on and off on an as needed basis a lot more than those that leave it on all the time since the phone will almost always do a lock on boot which lessens the time it takes to get later locks for that latter crowd.
The ffc is a win on the 4g, though. Can't argue with that at al. Losing that much space is not worth it IMO. I'd still get the vibrant over the 4g just for the extra > 12g storage in it!
In the end which one is better will ultimately depend on how you use your phone.

Your opinion doesn't hold water (as usual!)
The higher modulation that comes with "4G" allows for higher peak speeds. The Vibrant has overhead, 7.2 Mbps is only under optimal conditions, never really ever happening. 21Mbps is also only under optimal conditions, but the higher ceiling allows for higher peak speed.

I said the battery was only 10% bigger. I can get over 11 hours on my vibrant. It's on the charger before it can die. Battery life not a factor for me on these phones. I'm aware leaving gps on drains battery.
16g isn't enough to hold my music and videos. The extra 12 in the vibrant is huge cause 32 gb cards are still too expensive IMO.
And yes very high speeds aren't all that common even Verizon lte customers don't get anything near the theoretical max. I can get ~4 down on my vibrant anything more than that I won't notice much since I don't tether or download ridiculously large files on my phones.

OK, I guess you like your Vibrant. That is perfectly fine, yet it does not make Vibrant better than Galaxy S 4G.
I used to have a vibrant before the insurance got me the galaxy 4g. I can definitely say that the 4g is better. My speeds doubled which is almost the same speeds as my cable
internet. I don't have a problem with my battery especially since the 1800mah battery from the epic 4g touch is working wonders. I do miss the 16GB on board but I have a 32gb card and never had a problem of having low internal storage. We also have some great developers so not worried about development. Also we have official gingerbread!

I had both and I think modified vibrant is better.
Some apps on 4g were losing their settings after reboot.
Inernal memory on Vibrant is faster than external SD on 4G.
Also 4g drains more power than 3g.
In 4g they made 2 copper GPS contacts in vibrant it is only one

Rezound with double Data or wait?

Right now I have an opportunity to get Line for 15 dollars a month and 50% off data through work. This means I can get a 10gb data plan for $25 a month totaling 40 a month.
Of all the phones on Verizon right now, the HTC rezound and the galaxy nexus are the two phones I'm considering but mainly leaning towards the resound due to its ridiculously crisp screen and great camera and because I'm fed up with Samsung GPS issues. The phone would be $100 for me.
Now should I get it? Or should I wait for the next verizon phone to come out? The only phone coming to Verizon that I could think of is the new incredible. If I wait I'll lose the chance at double the data
Are you guys happy with the resound? What are your complaints ? Likes?

I keep mobile data on, though its usually on 3G and looking for 4G (which uses more power), WiFi at home, GPS when needed, sync always on, etc.
With those settings, I get over a day each charge. That includes checking emails and XDA app a few times an hour. If you browse the internet on mobile data you'll see your battery drain pretty quickly, so use WiFi whenever possible.
Honestly, HTC built a beast of a phone here. Sure, you can get better battery on the RAZR MAXX, or pure Android on the Nexus, but we have the best overall specs in terms of processor, camera, screen (720p is a rarity on phones). Definitely worth your money.
The only other option I can think of other than getting it now is waiting for the incredible 4g to drop and getting the rezound then because the price will drop. But then again you probably won't get the double data so I'd definitely get the rezound now.
Not to be a doubter or anything...but 50% off data? Are you certain about this?

I'm not sure Inc4G will be better than the Rez. Sure, it gets the latest iteration of Snapdragon, but a 20% loss in CPU frequency can negate that.
Incredible 4G:
1.2GHz S4 MSM8960 CPU
qHD display (960x540)
8GB internal storage
4" screen
Adreno 225 GPU
Rezound:
1.5GHz S3 MSM8660 CPU
720p display (1280x720)
16GB internal storage
4.3" screen
Adreno 220 GPU
EDIT -- nevermind...i realized afterward you're saying to get the rezound when inc4g drops.

Uhhh.. the Inc 4g will be much better than the rezound, the drop in clock frequency is negligable, the Inc 4g will run faster then our processor and have much better battery life due to the new architecture of the CPU and the smaller 28nm manufacturing process. Clock frequencys don't mean much when your trying to compare processors from different architectures. Also not having an HD screen and a newer GPU will make it run a lot better with anything graphically intense.
I love my Rezound, but as soon as it's out I'll be getting a Inc4G. If you can wait for the Inc4G to be released while still getting that data deal then that's what I'd do. But, 10 gigs of data at 50% off is a sweet deal. If that deal expires soon, why not get the Rezound, and upgrade later?

This is true...if you never have had a phone with an HD screen it may not be a bad buy. I will doubt you will be able to beat the price of the Inc 4G if you can get the Rezound for $100. It's also an added bonus getting some decent headphones too.
Also consider development. I wouldn't expect too many Devs jumping for the Inc 4g to be honest. It may be better to get the Rezound because once resource is released for the for Inc 4g our devs will tear that Sense 4 apart and make our roms soooo much better.

to the guy about recalibrating the battery... it doesn't do anything, a google engineer said so, the system wipes the battery stats file at every full charge so if you charge to the green light it's the same as manually clearing the battery stat.bin thingy ...
regarding battery life to the OP the mugen slim extended battery fits in the regular battery door so more life and no more bulk.
I've had my rezound for over a month now. I'm coming from a sensation 4g and then an EVO. This is the best phone by far. The screen is amazing the cam takes awesome pics. I have no lag at all and get a days use on a fully charged battery. Once CM gets the RIL fixed we will have cm9. Overall great phone I think a lot better than the gnex.

Does anyone here NOT have the weird screen battery drain issue?

What the title said. Does anyone not have the issue where screen is draining the battery even when its off? Also I read a lot of people complaining about 4-6h SOT time, so much that I'm beginning to think that's a feature not a bug. But the idle screen usage thing is weird. If you don't have that issue could you post a screenshot of your screen usage? Everyone is showing at least 70% and that I assume is too high. On my current phone its nowhere near that much with max brightness and actually on. I currently own an LG Optimus L7II (P710) and it's near the end of its life span, so its time for a new phone. Yes RN2 screen is bigger but its not that bigger to cause such a huge drain.
I'm preparing to buy this phone (Prime version) and I've only found it in one shop in my country (where on their site says 2.0ghz 32gb internal memory version, but afaik if its 32gb its prime and should be 2.2ghz, so error I guess, I'll call them to confirm), so I'm trying to gather as much info about it and whats gonna be an issue with the phone. I'll be happy if it gets through the day with about 3h actual light gaming or chatting in viber. I occasionally only play PokemonGO when I go out for a walk or cycle for 2-3h, and some card games at home, nothing too heavy. Not that I'm able on my current phone anyway. lol
Also a side question if I may, whats the deal with the kernel? The source is needed to fix issues like the battery drain and make truly custom roms, right? Are they ever going to release the source code? I'm guessing the answer is maybe, we don't know yet. Just thought maybe someone has an insight to share about previous Xiaomi phones and kernels.
Xiaomi RN2 is the only phone out of 3 that have the things I want(Min => 2gb RAM, quad-core, 3000mAh removable battery, gyroscope, gps, sd-card slot, and under 250 euros), and the only one in my country barely available. So I'm freaking out a bit over this battery drain issue.
EDIT: Crap, the only shop I found it at, at reasonable price doesn't have it. Only Note 3s, and I don't want note 3 cause of built-in battery. Guess I'm stuck ordering online and paying 30% custom fee... So instead of 150$ it'll be 200$ and no warranty.
Anyone?
@ChrisBunny You wrote it little complicated Do you want to see this? My battery was not fully charged.

Thanks for the info. It looks like your screen is not using as much as people reporting it uses 60-70% of battery, if I'm reading it correctly, while yours is using only 16%. I'm gonna call the phone shop in a bit (waiting for them to have their morning coffee lol) and see if they still have the phone. Then I just hope mine doesn't drain too.
@ChrisBunny I forgot to say about Core clock. Your shop has wrong information about CPU frequency. Prime version has 2.2GHz (exactly 2.1x GHz) and non-prime version has clock 2GHz (exactly 1.95GHz)

Yeah that's what I figured. I found a couple ads for the phone, so I might still get it, it just won't have any warranty.
So your Xiaomi RN 2 screen uses only about 15% of the battery? That's really good if I understood correctly. How long does your battery last when you leave it alone and when you use it a lot?
@ChrisBunny
I'm fully charged now, later will post screenshot when i will get 5 or 10% on battery.

Are you happy with the phone? And do you by any chance play Pokemon GO with it? I'm curious how the game works on it and how long.

I'm happy with the phone. Speciffication for that cheap price is great. It has everything what i needed except Qualcomm processor (with Mediatek it's hard with sources so the phone can't get custom kernels, you know) Games works good. I have played pokemon for a short time- no problem with playing but nothing speciall for me so I uninstalled it.
GTA San Andreas - no fps drop
Shadow warrior - no fps drop
League of stickman - no fps drop
Gangstar Vegas - no fps drop
Dungeon hunter 5 - on some maps fps dropped but i think it's weak optimalization
Sim city - no fps drop
The sims free play - no fps drop
Thats the most (i think) advanced games i have played on my device. Don't remember more xD

Cool, 12h on idle if I'm reading it correctly, and only half the battery depleted.

No, 12% battery loss in 12 hours - mostly idle time, but with some slight use (email, text, etc). Wireless and Bluetooth left on (the battery was on about 63% when the phone was switched on).
BTW: I am running a "Skinnified" MIUI 7.5.10 ROM.

Ah that's even better! Whats your guess whats the reason a lot of people experience those crazy screen battery drains? I hope the reason is just some fluke with the rom, and not with hardware.

I think it would most likely be a software (ie, ROM) issue (ie, something is behaving badly in the background). Many of us spend a lot of energy trying to get better battery performance from the phone - but it is all really about how the software is configured. Without the sources to the kernel code, the best that can be done is tweaking bits here and there. This is what makes the Skinny ROM guidelines from @jajk very useful (to remove Xiaomi bloat and battery hogs). This requires some effort, patience, and nerves; but it can be quite rewarding. For me, I have been far more concerned with idle time than with "screen on" time, because my phone spends most of its time doing nothing.

MokeeOS compiled by vova.vafin. For me, his roms are better than for example Bulee. Device not overheat and have some power tweaks.
Okay, I gave you screenshots and now I can flash my lovely ResurrectionRemix
Thanks guys. After all I decided to get Redmi Note 3 Pro (the one with Snapdragon and 3gb RAM not Mediatek), there's plenty people and shops selling it. Now I'm just waiting on reply from the seller and he should send tuesday and it should arrive wednesday. Yeah it doesn't have removable battery, but from what I researched its an awesome phone and battery isn't an issue.

Xiaomi+MTK=mega problems with custom ROM development

First time Sony user

Hey, i got a sweet deal for brand new Z5 compact, and bought it for a family member (previous phone galaxy s4 mini)
Compact size (and good reviews) were deciding factors
I'm a long time nexus user and don't know anything about Xperia in general, apart from reviews for Z5..
Can you help me with a bit of tl;dr what should i expect from software in general, and Z5 model? quirks, problems, something i should watch out for or modify?
I'm not gonna root/rom if not necessary, want a stock stable android and maybe cosmetic changes with a good launcher or similar
any help appreciated
Overheating, bad camera image quality, battery drain, lagging due to old CPU, 2G ram and aggressive throttling..
My advice would be get newer model instead like X Compact or XZ1 Compact if you have higher budget.
I'm a old Nexus 4 user too. I bought my Z5c when my Nexus 4's screen become unusable after it was dropped. I've installed official Lineage OS on my Z5c. I'm not a heavy phone user but occasionally in the day i look up reddit use firefox to read/search something and listen music when I'm using subway and of course use Whatsapp to communicate with my friends. I don't use Facebook on my phone. Installing Lineage rooting via Magisk and installing Brevent app for increasing battery life made phone my favorite. It endures my daily use for 2 days without charging sometimes it may go 2 and 1/2. The features of stock rom like Bravia engine were not interesting for me and considering the bloatware included it's hard to call that they are worth it. I generally don't use my phone as camera but sometimes take quick photos of the landscapes with scenic views. Camera quality is enough for me. I'm not taking 4K videos w/ my phone anyway. There is a feature of stock ROM that I miss though. The iOS like selection magnifier for text boxes was a killer feature of stock ROM. RAM usage dropped 200 MiB and responsiveness of the phone is significantly increased with LOS. It is a great phone overall.

Well, i bought it already X or XZ1 would be in much higher price range than for what i got.
It's gonna be very very lightweight usage, basic stuff only, so only thing that concerns me is that 'battery drain' after nougat update?
Is that issue fixed with some recent updates or still a problem?

Huh man, now i'm thinking of Lineage ^^ i know it's better os, but i used nexus because i didn't have time to constantly updating my roms and guessing will my camera work properly with new one etc.
If i decide to flash Lineage, can you tell me is it streamlined and documented properly for Z5 so i don't waste hours on research?
And also, is nougat battery drain still present? any major bugs in Lineage for Z5?
tnx for replies!
I'm running latest stock rooted. Having overheating and lags when browsing webs..
wipe calvik data cache...remove bloatware (spotify, moviecreator...) try again...after that the phone works as it should
100% use LineageOS. Performance and battery life life are phenomenal compare to the latest stock firmware.

I just tested to see how much battery drain will happen when phone is not in use, no sim card, connected to my wifi, with stamina turned off.
It's siting on my desk for 3 days, currently 45% battery left, thats not bad right? i'm sure that with sim card it will be more, but still..
If i go for LOS Can you tell me what version should i go for, for most stable performance? I see there is Stable Release Date: 2017-08-27..
tnx

Hey, look for the official LineageOS rom. There was an unofficial that was compiled by someone but it seems that he's stopped.
I've recently gotten an Z5 Compact too.

Overall it's a good camera in Z5C.
Camera quality is pretty much same same for Z5 Compact and X Compact, the XZ1 Compact has somewhat better image quality though.
