Introduction:
This is a guide for doing maintnence on your innerSD. By default, user data and temporary files are stored on it.
The innerSD is the hidden microSD card inside the S5, it is not normally accessable without modification of the device.
The purpose of this guide is to show users how to expand/shrink/rebuild the partitions needed for their innerSD.
It does not cover backing up and restoring data on it, that should be done via a Custom Recovery and making/using Nandroids.

A GNU/Linux pc with GParted
Superuser access required on device
(Ubuntu installed in a virtual machine is acceptable)

Instructions:
Dissassemble your device to get access to your innerSD
Insert microSD card into pc
Launch GParted
Consult innerSD partition layout for desired layout
Select desired microSD card in GParted
Delete all partitions THIS WILL WIPE ALL DATA
Create extended partition
Create desired logical partitions from step 4
Must be created in order specified in step 4!
New Size: <specified size from step 4>
Create as: Logical Partition
File System: <specificed type from step 4>
Label: Blank
All other values: Leave as default
Remove from PC
Reinsert into device
Recommended: Reinstall desired rom

For those not familiar with Clonezilla, it is based on linux and you DL and burn the ISO to a CD. You can then boot the CD and use the Clonezilla tool.
I used this method because there are no commands to learn and no software to install on your computer. If you can boot from a CD you should be able to use the images.
I made the images available because many users had asked for them. My experience with just putting an SD Card into the inner slot and doing a reset has been varied. It worked with a class 10, 8 GB card from Transcend but not with others.
Edit: If your inner SD Card is bad replacing it and doing a factory reset may fix your Streak, if not the image is available to restore the proper partitions to the card.
Guys I don't know how many of you are thinking about doing this but for me it was well worth doing because it got rid of the "E:can't find MISC" error message I was getting everytime I went into Streakmod Rexovery

Well I used a class 10 4gb Patriot LX because it has the best specs as far as I could see although therebis some debate on this topic... some believe the class 2 cards are better are smaller files read write.
But when you use a 4 then you have all 4 gigs available to you

I put a Transcend 8 GB class 10 card in my Streak (pic here). I did a factory reset (from the first screen in StreakMod Recovery) and the Streak formatted the card fine. The biggest difference I see is over 6 GB of space to install apps, so I keep all of my apps on the phone. If I want to change the external SD Card I don't have to worry about apps not working.
I am getting my Transcend 8 GB class 10 tomorrow. I already cut plastic in the back to access the inner micro sd card.

I didn't document the cut process but will provide few pictures of what it looks when I am ready to insert the new card. Yet to get the memory card still.
Hope USPS delivers today. I will be out of town next 5 days. So if not today, gotta wait.
I used a scalpel to cut the plastic in the back. Took me about 15 mins.
Didn't get the card today. So Monday it is then.

Here you go. I made it larger than it has to be.
I have successfully replaced my inner SD today. Did restore from Nandroid and now my internal SD shows 6.3 GB available. This was an easy mod, hope it is worth it not just for space but for speed also.
I am using 407 deodexed and rooted. Stable as a rock except for an occasional wifi freeze.

"Can't Mount Data"
I tried to re-install a 4GB class 10 internal sdhc today. I had problems with it in the past, as it quit working after about a month. I was going to use this guide to see if I could get it to work.
Took a Full Nandroid BU immediately before switching internal cards. Still couldn't get the 4GB cl 10 to work so I re-installed the original 2GB sd and did a Nandroid restore. Now I am gettitng an error during that restore:

I have tried a Factory Restore from the Dell screen, and use StreakMod Recovery v0.3.2.8.
I am on bb354 running SimpleStreak 1.2 with perfupdate and oc to 1190.
I have had this exact same problem with the 4GB cl10 card but never with the stock 2GB card. Everything was working perfectly before I started messing around!
Can anyone tell me what this means AND how to correct it and get my Streak back up and running?
Any help would be most appreciated!!!

***UPDATE***
I was able to get the stock 2GB internal card to work and am up and running. I was not able to get the 4GB cl 10 card to work leading me to believe it is defective.
What I did:
1. Factory Reset from the Dell Screen.
2. Installed the custom ROM (SimpleStreak 1.2 in this case) from the zip on the external sd card.
3. Installed the PerfUpdate zip for SS 1.2 from the external sd card.
4. Boot completely and open and close several apps once booted.
5. Rebooted and did Full Nandroid restore.
6. Rebooted and opened back into my familiar launcher and apps all fully working.
7. Sighed heavily in relief!!!!
I did a reset from the first screen of StreakMod Recovery yesterday and the Streak would not boot. I had to use the image I had made of the inner SD Card to restore the inner card. This was from StreakMod, with a heavily modified Stock 351 ROM (rooted, many system apps removed).
I got an error with the 360 image so I used the 406 image and had no issues. I then booted into Linux and used GParted (a partition editing tool) to resize the smaller partition to use the full card. When the Streak booted I installed stock 351 and did a reset from the stock recovery and the inner SD Card formatted properly.
My points are:
If the inner SD Card does not format properly on a reset you can fix it. Don't panic.
It is probably best to use a stock recovery to do a factory reset.
I have also read that to use a card larger than 4 GB you need to change system files. You only need to do that to use the space on the inner SD card in ways that it isn't normally used. See here and here.
How to benchmark your internal SD card? I didn't do before with 2 GB card but here is mine after the swap with Transcend 8 GB class 10 card. The second screen capture is on the external 16 GB Dell provided class 4 card.

did a stock systemtest and came out on 2559 and after a new test came out 100 points higher.
over all performance looks improved, less freezes when memory gets a bit full.
Just a standard installed OTA android 2.2.2, after crash first reinstalled the default card and then swapped it straigt forward with the 8 Gb card and stock recovery.
No special software used
now 6 Gb internal memory available.
when installed with 200+ apps it's a huge difference instead of app to SD now that i don't have a needed copy of my apps on every external SD swap saves a huge amount of work reinstalling.
I used the systemtest from george android(android market) to compare

I read in some threads that using a class 10 micro sd card reduces the battery life due to increase in read/write speeds. Wonder what is the optimal class for the Streak.

Thanks for the tip! I installed a Kingston 8GB Class 4, and worked like a charm!
When I rebooted, it prompted me to send my unit to have it debugging, but it was formatting the sd card as well. It rebooted to DSC and prompted me to sign in my google account again..
So I rebooted into StreakMod and did a full restore nandroid.
I'm seeing 6GB available space! Hope I won't run into any problems *crossing fingers*
Now I wonder if there's a way to mount the inner sd with USB? hmmm

I am curious as to why would you want to do that? That is where your /cache and /data directories reside, and I would think it dangerous to mess with those on a running system. FWIW, they are mounted r/w, so you could copy files to them with adb push/pull , but, again, why?
With all the "fun" people have recorded in this thread tying to initialize new or corrupted cards, it seems that "set it and forget it" would be wisest. Leave that space for the system to use since you seemed to wonder if 6GB in /system would have problems.
FWIW, I got a used DS 5 with no inner card, and put a 4GB card in it (after a lot of research as to where it was - fuzzy closeup pics/vague desriptions - and how to format it - easy on my primary platform, Linux ;-} ), and the 3.5GB /system partition still has over 3GB free after adding several dozen apps (even the piggy Nook app), so I am not the least interested in playing games with moving apps to the "normal" SD card (/mnt/sdcard).
It seems "casual" (maybe better described as "personal" vs "system") file management is best suited for the standard SD card that normally shows up when enabling USB access.

There was a problem with my streak 5, it wasn't switching on (no power, no dell logo, no lights, it was just like trying to switch on without battery), this was happened after using fastboot erase command.
And i cant use factory reset because the device was not switching on.
Do any one have any idea on this.?

Many tutorials seems to be based on using SD card, i dont own one right now , I have a microSD card for my Xperia X10 , but its currently in use and has data/apps in it , so i cant format it . Is there a way to root / install CWM / Install CM 7 without SD card ?
Also if I am to buy a microSD card , which one to get ? i mean i am not going to store videos on my NT , so will a 4GB be sufficient ?and what class should i buy ?
Also why is it taking long time to charge from laptop / USB ? I cant use wall charger for now , since i dont have a converter yet. is there a way after rooting / installing CM7 to better the USB charging ?

As for the USB charging, it seems you're stuck with the slow charging until you get the adapter.

Oh, didn't know what version you were on. This method does not require you to format your SD card, but you'll need to use it:

Using a new SDCard (not one you have info stored on) make a new MSDOS partition table and add a 50 MB FAT32 partition as the first primary partition. Then make sure you enable to boot and lda flags.

But here it says to create a partition using gparted , IIRC after doing all partition , Gprated will erase the card and do the partition from the beginning ..
I have linux mint 12 as dual boot , I can use it there for partitioning.

If your only gonna keep books and magazines then a 4gb card should suffice.. Movies and games will need a bigger card.. I got a 16 gb transcend class 10 from flipkart for Rs.1600.. its decent for that money.. oh and if you plan to run cm7 from externel sd card, you should know, the image itself is 4gb..

Have you reclaimed the B&N reserved space ?
Also which converter are you using for power supply ?

I installed the [DEV] [WIP] ICS / CM9 (4.0.4) Alpha 5 - 3.1 kernel - Last update 21/04/2012. Compared to the previous notice that has changed the home screen. The problem is that to reinstall my applications I have observed that Google Play three partitions: Toshiba Folio100, Unknown Rk29sdk and Motorola Xoom and my applications are for either. Is there any android program to view / join these partitions?. How I can fix this?

I don't understand the problem. Is External SD card in your Folio? Add some pictures. Dev manager is an app? Does Folio recognize Internal SD?

Why don't you use simple SD card for your apps. And one more thing why to have backed apps if they are on the market? Upload your stuff to Google Drive or other FTP server! Maybe I don't understand something?

When I enter the PC Play Google and downloaded an application to install it gives me a choice between Folio100 Toshiba, and Motorola Xoom Rk29sdk Unknown. When I connect via wifi tablet apps are downloaded, but it says out of space, but I have 14 GB free. I do not know if the tablet has three partitions for Folio100 Toshiba, and Motorola Xoom Rk29sdk Unknown or this is not true. I do not know if I explain well. Thanks for your instructions.

When you downloading apps from tablet(Folio100) says out of space.(You have 14GB free space on your INTERNAL SD).Yes? Try cleaning "Dalvik cache" via recovery or delete everything via fastboot: erase userdata,system,cache,linux,recovery and flash recovery and ROM.

What kind of "partitions"? What tablet have three partitions? I thought partitions are only on Hard Drives(PC)?

the problem is - folio recognize internal memory of 1 GB like space for install apps , rest of internal memory is recognized like sd card ( but it is the rest of internal memory !! ) and the most funny part is - that part of internam memory can not be used for install apps or move installed , in real - you instal dungeon hunter 3 + zombies from madfinger games and you are out of memory :laugh::laugh::laugh: but yes , i try fastboot ... unfortunately that i was unable to make work on my pc ever whit folio ... grrrr

Fastboot can only save you(Wipe everything). Keep trying to install it. Can't suggest anything...

Everything is going well? Do you mean that now you can move applications to the SD card? If you still don't have that option, like me, then you haven't solved the problem, you just temporarily freed some space.

and another one I can't find the link but it required creating an ext4 partition on the SD card (and my Folio wouldn't load Android anymore)
I have not solved the problem: I have understood. Now I know that I have only the first GB for applications and the rest to mp3, avi, epub, etc. etc.

Some research in the DEV-forums could've given you sufficient information on the subject... The latest Android ROMS cope with insufficient space on the application partition. The new ROMS will use a different partitioning scheme which leaves you with less room to store files, but a little bit more room to install applications...
Hi every1, fairly simple question... but in true xda style you need some info.
Sgs3 ultimarom 8.0 running LOTS OF MASSIVE GAMES. Ive almost got every gamelost game. It will be a sandisk mobile ultra class 10 64gb micro sd card when it arrives. I currently use a 16gb (below) and with nothing but game data, 4gb music and my titanium backups I only have 300mb left. all of the games that use more than 200mb data in /sdcard/android/ are running off the external using directory bind. So I ordered a 64gb. Also I DONT WANT to use the 64gb as internal. I will be using directory bind. I know I have to use partition magic to make it fat32 (and still manage to keep 64gb). So cmw can use it. Correct?
My question is though would it be beneficial to partition it with 2 partitions 1 for games n one for everything else? WOULD IT BE FASTER???? Or shall I just dump them in a folder as I do now? If I do have 2 partitons will my phone mount them both without requiring an app to do it ? (like I do to mount ntfs - note I freeze this app when not in use as I dont want it always running)
Is there anything else I need to know?

i hv hcl me u1 tablet. and it is behaving weird. last time i try to install a iron man 3 game and wont install so i get it at my shop.
(actually it belongs to my kids).. i do all reset. and delete things but nothing is working
i go in recovery and wipe formatt .. but nothing is being deleted.. all thing is as it is.
no new thing is being copy or being deleted in it..
so i open it and try to short it out. rediculously i found one more sd card of 4gb inside tablet chip.
i remove and put it in reader . connect to pc. it shows 1.8gb total and free around 800mb.
i guess rest of part is rom part in sd card bcouse without that memory chip tablet is not booting up. i replace another 4gb and 8gb but nothing working..
and i put back that sandisk 4gb back in hcl chip and it boots up as regular ...
problem is it is not being formated or not being hard reset in recovery.. i use MPTOOL . i updated with it. but nothing working out for new game or installations
for me the only solution left is to replace that 4gb SANDISK sd card which might cotain rom part..
so how to make that vimicro disk to make tab work normaly...

it takes lot time and two time factory reset .. but working now but ram is as low below 300 mb
any body hv problem with hcl me u1 with hanging restarting or anything is not installing and deleting
change sd card of your choise 8gb or more and install rom
any question can ask me i just solved it

I have an HCL Me V1 tab. My problem is something similar to yours. I was copying an apk (FL Studio Mobile) and a folder related to it (extra downloadable contents) from my laptop to the tablet (from laptop to /sdcard/Android/obb). Basically I had downloaded the apk and dlc from Pirate Bay. I'm sure there was no problem with these files as I had not even run these files in the tablet when the problem started.
First my laptop got hanged, but somehow I disconnected the tablet safely. However after I rebooted the tablet, it got stuck in a loop in the boot screen. I tried resetting it but it did not work. Also for some reason I am not able to do a hard reset on that tablet. The device simply refuses. When I remove the external SD card, the device won't even start when I press the reset pin hole.
There is one peculiarity to my problem however. The power button has stopped working. I can only start the tablet by the reset pin hole. I am sure this is not a hardware issue as I am 100% positive the tablet did not experience any physical shock.
It is a rooted device with rooted apps. Android ICS 4.0.4, kernel 3.x.x.
I plan on doing exactly what you did, i.e. open up the device, get a new sd card, load the ROM on it and put it back in. However, can you suggest any other alternatives before I do that?

I once encountered the same problem exactly as you described, but the device was in warranty and the service center fixed it.
Now i know what was the issue.

i have hcl me u1 tablet.
it is behaving crazy.
I can't save data on it.
whenever I restart it ,it is reset.
I tried to do factory reset, but nothing is changed.
I have also opened it and take out that internal sandisk of 4 gb.
inserted it mmc reader and connect it to ubuntu.
however I am not able to mount it.
but I managed to view partitions on it.
to my surprize,
there are six(believe me) partitions.(thanks to DISK UTILITY)
1. maximum size 2.5 gb. which I see in.xplore.
2. system 700 mb
3. data 400 mb
4.tmp 40 mb
5. and 6 are unallocated (I think).
(I will upload screenshot of it.soon)
but I am not able to mount any of it.
that 2.5 gb is fat32 but when I tried to mount it I got some superblock type error.
what is the problem.
and why xplore (file manager) shows two sd cards each of size 2.5 gb.(and identical to one another in context of files and folder.)
however its spec says 4 gb.(I have not attached any external sd or pendrive)
so here is my sd card partitions::
1:: 2.6 GB FAT :: that is what i see in file manager:: I can mount it.
2:: 1.3 GB Extended :: What is it? . there is no option to Mount it in Disk Utility.(Only one option 'Delete Partition').
3:: 403 MB ext2 :: I cant mount it.
(Error :: "Error mounting: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sda5, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so" )
4:: 786 MB ext2 Userdata :: same as system ("Error is also same")
5:: 67 MB ext2 cache :: same as system ("Error is also same")
6:: 34 MB unknown :: only three option (Format Voulme,Edit Partition,Delete Partition)
7:: 34 MB unknown :: same as above

it takes lot time and two time factory reset .. but working now but ram is as low below 300 mb
any body hv problem with hcl me u1 with hanging restarting or anything is not installing and deleting
change sd card of your choise 8gb or more and install rom

Thank you i finally reset my internal sd card..but as you said my tablet is very slow and always hang then turn off..is there any way solve this problem?

my tab is again corrupted and not being reset or copy data or delete data from it... may b the reason i found out is tab stays non used or on low charge bettery
or the poor quality of sd card which i replaced..
i am willing to replace with the original sandisk or the samsung class 8 or something best quality with some warranty....
slow tab >>>it may b due to sd card becoz this fools install rom on sd card. can you believe it?? i was shocked
i will post results when i replace another sd card of samsung class 8 of 8gb..
one more thing you can also extend your internal memory of tab by replacing the provided 4 gb.. 8gb will give you 5 gb of free internal storage..
this may help those whose mmc slot and usb are not working

did you check the ram..
do you know the ram before?
there are options in selecting ram ,
if you hv flashed rom with 512 ram selection it will b slower .
there are two models they(hcl) hv launched. 1 512mb ram and 2, 1 gb ram...
1gb ram was lilttle more speedy than of 512.
go to settings and apps and check ram in RUNNING...
NOT MUCH WE CAN DO WITH IT. COZ ITS REALLY OLDIE
TRY TO FLASH WITH 1GB SELECTION , IF YOU GOT BOOT LOOP. HANG ON HCL LOGO THAT MEANS YOU DNT HV 1GB RAM MODEL. YOU HV TO FLASH IT AGAIN WITH 512 SELECTION
EVEN ONE OF MY FRIEND HV ONE GB CONFIGURATION WRITTEN ON BOX AND 512 IN DEVICE..

I don't know how to check the ram. If i use again the mptool can i change the settings to 1gig ram? and how to do it?

Hcl ME u1 hardware looks similar to BSNL penta is703c. I just installed the official stock rom of HCL u1 to my penta tab. IT does seem to work..
oh yeah, i changed SD card to 32 Gig...
using mp tool, try using different DDR settings.. (Check attachments)

go to settings > application manager> slide to see running app. at the bottom u can find the ram and the free ram and used ram
the tab only can support 1g ram if it is build with that . some tab come with 512 and some with 1g.b
so try various selection in mp tool > go to ddr setting. select elpida or micron wich supports u that u will have to find out. and be patient after flashing dont do any fulish. if it does not work it wil go in boot loop . just hcl and nothing. than try other selection like elpida or micron.
to go in boot loader mode u need to remove mmc and data cable and than
insert data cable nd press power on button u find the disk iand vdfu driver will install and than put 4 gb or 8gb mermoy card and flash it

HCL ME tablet U1
Sir,
My hcl tablet is behaving awkwardly. firstly, after every 4 to 5 weeks it starts hanging up and i have to send to centre to fix it. secondly, Everything gets stopped be it settings, gallery, file manager or anything and i have to factory reset it and loose every game i installed. But curiously this time i dont know what happened and i cant even factory reset it! it just reboots and nothing else. Even when i uninstall an app, it reboots again and what i see is that the app hasn't been uninstalled and it appears again! the only thing that works at its best is the calculator.
Suggest me what to do.

I have solved the problem of it being reset evertime we restart it.
things you need ::
1 :: A new MicroSD card ( I prefer (actually used ) Sandisk Mobile Ultra 8gb Class 10).
I brought it from Flipcart for just Rs.340 .
2 :: Stock ROM for our tab , Dont download any other rom they have some performance issue

After Having these 3 thing ....
Steps ::
1 :: take rear cover of tab , take that metal cover over circuit.
see that sandisk microsd 4 gb ?
that's the problem ! take it out.
and put new sd card there.
now fit rear cover again as it was .
DONT TRY TO TURN ON THE TAB
on to the computer ::
connect tab with pc via USB cable. (in Switched OFF state.)
U should see a new drive in my computer (dont open and close that popup window)
2 :: Extract file U1_0421_Image.rar
:: open mptool.exe ( I prefer run as Admin.)
:: U should see the message "1 device reddy".
if not Dont Worry .
3 :: then go to the setting on mptool.
select the "vortex.pak" for PAK File.
now the tricky part : Carefully
look at your tab specs ,
If it says RAM = 1 GB
then In partition setting set System(MB)=1024
and DDRtype = elpida 8bit 1024
If it says RAM = 512 MB
then In partition setting set
System(MB)=512
and DDRtype = elpida 8bit 512M
DONT TOUCH ANYTHING ELSE !
4 :: OK done ? then Save it .
5 :: now click on scan if it doesn't say "1 Device Reddy".
6 :: click on Update.
7 :: wait and let it complete.
8 :: now tab must be restart automatically. It will take some time for first boot so dont panic.
I hope u now have a working tab.
open apps and u will see "Market"
thats it !
Nowadays HCL is providing market app with new tab (I have not when i purchased it).
now it has market not play store
and it will not update itself.
so,
Find any android device with Google Play Store inbuilt.
open xplore on it (if it doesnt there just download it (nearly 2 mb))
in config set root = normal works on all device.
now go to /system/app
copy "vending.apk" file to sdcard and send it to OUR HCL ME U1 tab and install it .
after a network connection it will update itself.
and u can enjoy working latest play store.

Hi ,
same thing is happening with me. When I try to flash my u1 tab with mptool.exe,after 2-3 seconds it's givig a long beep and download error message is getting displayed .
