Flashed HTC One M8 Stock Recovery, Updates Result In Red Exclamation Mark - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Hello! This is my first post here, mostly driven by my need to download a patch for Stagefright.
My bootloader is unlocked and I am rooted. I was running TWRP up until now, but I want to patch stagefright so I decided to re-flash the stock recovery. Now, whenever I allow my phone to update, it goes straight to a red exclamation mark inside a triangle.
Firstly, I have an AT&T HTC One M8. Here is what fastboot says:
S-ON
HBOOT: 3.19.0.0000
Radio: [email protected]
OpenDSP: v47.2.-00564-M8974_F0.1024
My OS and other software versions are
Android 5.0.2
HTC Sense: 6.0
Software: 4.28.502.1
HTC SDK API level: 6.55
Kernel Version: 3.4.0
Baseband Version: 4.0.U605611
Build Number: 4.28.502.1 CL51189 release-keys
I would greatly appreciate your assistance. As it stands, I am very stressed out.

If you have made any changes to the system, especially the build.prop, the update will fail.

So I would have to do what so that the update won't fail?
Also, does that mean that the recovery isn't screwed?

You need a fully stock ROM, RUU to stock if necessary.

That depends, what recovery did you flash? It has to be the 4.28.502 recovery.

I first flashed the TWRP included with Hasson2000's M8 Toolkit. After that, I flashed an M8 recovery I found on this forum (though I can't remember the version numbers).
If it is related, the RUU updaters from HTC's website do not work on my phone. They fail without my phone even showing a progress bar.
EDIT: got my recovery from this thread

I believe this is the 4.28.502 RUU:

There are tools available online to extract components from an RUU.

That thread is 7 pages long. How on earth am I supposed to be able to tell what you flashed from this?
My guess if you flashed the wrong version recovery. It has to be AT&T, and it has to be the Lollipop recovery.

Yeah, my bad. I did flash an old recovery, though of the AT&T type. I currently have the ROM.zip from the appropriate RUU version, but can't find a tool that can decrypt it so I can access the Recovery.IMG. All the ones I found were outdated. Do you know what I can do at this point?

I got the correct RUU. However, I am unable to extract the Recovery from the ROM.zip as it is encrypted. All the decrypt tools I found were old and didn't support any new devices like the M8. Do you know of a current one?

Looks like there's a 4.28.502.1 firmware zip there that you can extract the recovery from.

So, I downloaded the ROM and inside the firmware zip there weren't any files that look like a recovery. What would it be called?

[STOCK][OTA] 3.15.651.16 - Jellybean Firmware and Stock Rooted ROM

Since there is a lot of confusion about the firmware zips I wanted to give everyone a quick run down about what they are and how they can be used.
Telling Firmware and Update Zips Apart
HTC uses two main types of zip files for their updates. Update zips are the ones most people are familiar with and can be flashed from a custom recovery, while Firmware zips are used for lower level flashing like radios/baseband or bootloader updates. An easy way to tell them apart is by looking at the name, most firmware zips will start with the devices designation such as PJ75IMG. If you open them up you'll also notice firmware zips only contain a handful of large files while update zips contain file folders and their content normally.

Flashing Firmware Zips (If your device is S-ON skip to the next section)
There are three ways you can flash firmware zips:
The first is to rename the file to 'PJ75IMG.zip' (careful not to add zip twice if extensions are hidden), placing it in the root directory of the sd card and then to restart the phone while holding volume down. This brings up the bootloader which will automatically look for the file and try to flash it. Once it completes be sure to rename the file so the phone doesn't keep trying to reflash it.
.
The second way is by command through the recovery. On a S-OFF device, and a handful of HTC Dev unlocked devices, an update zip can pass along a firmware zip to the bootloader and have it flashed once the phone is rebooted. This is how normal updates are installed, however, without S-OFF the bootloader will only accept the request if the firmware zip is from HTC and has not been modified.
.
The third way, using fastboot, is my preferred method and usually the quickest. Simply place the the firmware zip in the folder with fastboot and use fastboot as follows
Code:
fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip PJ75IMG.zip
fastboot reboot
As long as you point it towards a valid file fastboot is not picky about the naming.
Click to collapse
Updating Firmware and S-ON/S-OFF
All RUUs and OTAs use firmware zips that have been signed with a special key from HTC. This allows the device to know if it's been modified.
When a device is S-OFF it ignores this key and allows you to flash any valid firmware zip, but S-ON devices will only accept them when the bootloader is relocked and if the firmware zip has not modified in any way.
Since firmware updates almost always contain hBoot (bootloader) upgrades to prevent people gaining S-OFF I don't recommend ever updating the firmware on a S-ON device.

ROM Downloads
These can be flashed from a custom recovery.
I wanted to keep these as close to stock as is possible, so the only modifications made to them were superuser, busybox, the boot.img being made insecure, and the de-odexed version will be zip-aligned.

Shouldn't hurt, but mine was fully updated when I ran everything so I can't say for sure
Should we apply any of these if there's not a Rom ready yet? And also can't we put the file on the external sd card and go to the bootloader and it will automatically find and install the file for the firmware on the external sd card? I'm s off. 1.12 h boot.

You are right, I forgot you do flash them in the boot loader. My question now is that I'm currently on 4.1.1 but may in the future update to 4.3. As a result, can you point me specifically to the file that I need to flash in the boot loader. Is the file I need to flash in the boot loader called 4.13.651.4 Sense 5 Android 4.3 - Odex or is it something else. Sorry for asking such stupid questions, but I'm getting confused.
If you want to update to 4.3 you should run the RUU. That will make sure everything gets updated. The RUU will also change how the internal storage is set up. In that same link I mentioned above, there is a link to all the applicable RUU's for this device.

Q&A for AT&T Stock Backups, Recoveries, OTAs and Radio IMGs
Some developers prefer that questions remain separate from their main development thread to help keep things organized. Placing your question within this thread will increase its chances of being answered by a member of the community or by the developer.
Before posting, please use the forum search and read through the discussion thread for AT&T Stock Backups, Recoveries, OTAs and Radio IMGs. If you can't find an answer, post it here, being sure to give as much information as possible (firmware version, steps to reproduce, logcat if available) so that you can get help.
Thanks for understanding and for helping to keep XDA neat and tidy!
When i resturned to stock. I only flash the stock recovery at rom. And i dont the radio. What radio does? Do i still need to flash it?
Little explanations needed !!!
Hi guys, just joined this HUGE community where you can find almost everything you need for your satisfaction:good: !
But since i`m noobie would appreciate some assistance in explaining how to unlock my M8,and install Android Revolution HD ROM !!!
I spent like 5 hours yesterday reading all kind`a info about how, where, why etc ... and the more i read, the more confused i got

So the things i`m clearly too dumb to understand is STEPS from A-Z ,to get Android Revolution HD over Original(full with crap )ROM !?!
Would appreciate if some smart developer could explain step by step what should i do first, and what last... should i get S-off first,or should i unlock it first,or make it bootable ...as i told, i read so many info ,and got rally confused about all that process :silly:
Sorry for my bad english ,and tnx in advance for all who cared to shine some knowledge in my darkness

This forum section is specifically for the AT&T version of the M8, which your phone is not.
You want to post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/help
But all you need to do to install ARHD on your phone is unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com, install custom recovery and flash the ROM.

Its not clear what you are trying to do, or what your current configuration is. The radio is the software that makes your phone work on the cell network.
If you did not specifically flash the radio (s-off required) its still on some stock radio. Although it might not correspond to the software (main version or OS) version you are on, since its also not clear what software you are on.

If you don't know an abbreviation, than look it up. There are a variety of threads that already explain what you are asking about, or just Google for it. Here is one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52484527
It doesn't tell you what AT&T is, but it explains a great many other common acronyms and terms.
AT&T is a mobile carrier...

Not an android term...just a mobile carrier network
where would i find the firmware for 4.4.4.? I tried downloading the android revolution custom rom 22.1 but i couldnt get any wifi after flashing.
didnt realize i had to update firmware(however when i received phone i was on 4.4.2 and i tried doing software update and was told up to date)
i was told go back to stock and take stock update but i never received one in the first place.
is there a way that i can flash 4.4.4. firmware now that im bootloader unlocked/rooted and s-off?
would i flash zip firmware then reflash android 22.1 or the other way around?
sorry for the noob questions but after searching for awhile i can say im honestly stuck without having to go back to 100 percent stock and hope i get an ota update
there is no att 4.4.4,if on an ATT variant, change your cid to BS_US001 and flash the 3.28.1540.5 ruu if you really want 4.4.4

This is discussed in a great many places. Euro firmware and instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2696282
US Dev Edition firmware here (included with WNC's ROM): http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/development/att-4-4-3-2-22-1540-3-debloated-sense-6-t2837365
Assume you are on AT&T, since this forum section is specific to the AT&T version. Note that Euro ROMs may create some network issues on AT&T (most prominent of which is LTE issues with Google services). The best combo for AT&T is WNC's ROM and the matching firmware.

Yes i am on att. currently 4.4.2 rooted with s-off running twrp as my customer recovery.

What did you try to flash ("couldn't get anything to work" doesn't' tell us a thing)? And what was the result?

your right i should be more specific. i went under the firmware section for the revolution rom and downloaded the firmware (3.32.531.2.zip). Now learning that this is euro rom and not att specific rom i guess the firmware i installed had nothing to do with att. the result didnt change. it was as if i flashed the rom without the firmware again. everything worked fine just no wifi. Before doing any of that i did a backup with twrp with just stock settings. right now im rooted and s-off. Looking into the rom you suggested and reading before i do anything. Its quite confusing this go around for me not too sure why.
appreciate everyones help though ! :good:
Backup your files [email protected] pics music etc, change cid and run the 3.28.1540.5 ruu, this is the same device(att variant) as us developer edition, will put you to latest compatable firmware and enable you to run any 4.4.4 builds out.

Did you flash the firmware with fastboot, following the instructions from the first link I supplied?
I think you are doing something wrong, which is probably why WNC is suggesting the RUU (which is a executable, and pretty much self-running).

yes i flashed the firmware with fastboot. i read both those posts before attempting even watched a few vids to make sure i did everything correct. However i think i am just going to go with WNC rom. i honestly had no idea there were euro roms and att specific roms. I figured everything in the att section was att specific. live and learn

What is your current hboot and radio numbers (both are displayed in bootloader).
Also, you often have to flash the firmware zip twice in order for all the modules to install.
Connect phone to computer with fastboot in power settings turned off, open a command prompt navigate to your adb/fastboot location and run adb reboot bootloader, once phone reboots it will connect to fastbootusb ,once this is established run this command fastboot oem writecid BS_US001then run fastboot reboot-bootloader,once this is done can run the ruu from fastboot connection.

radio 1.22.21331147a1.296

The hboot and radio numbers indicate you are on the latest firmware. If you did in fact flash the firmware twice, I would be confidant the firmware is all properly installed. I would try either:
1) Flash the desired ROM again after wiping data, cache and Dalvik
2) RUU as WNC suggests
3) Try WNC's ROM with corresponding firmware

[Q] CM12 on HTC One (M8) with HBOOT 3.16

Hello,
I'm looking for some guidance on trying to install CM12 on HTC One (M8) with HBOOT 3.16.0.0000. Currently, when I try to flash the firmware in TWRP, I get a message that says HBOOT 3.18 or 3.19 is required. I do have S-OFF. Other information: CID-CWS__001. I'm not sure of the next steps to take.
Thanks!
When you say flash firmware are you talking about the cm12 ROM zip?
You flash firmwares in hboot/bootlooader.You will want to have Supercid for it to flash.

Yes, my mistake. I want to flash the CM12 ROM and I can't seem to do that because I (apparently) need a newer version of HBOOT.
My question is what is the next step? If I get supercid, will the CM12 ROM install or is there another intermediate step (upgrading HBOOT? How do I do that?).
Thanks!

Yes another step is needed,
Because your S-OFF,Supercid you can flash other firmwares to your device that will allow anything based on 5.0.0-5.0.1 and still run smoothly.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/htc-one-m8/development/firmware-flashing-panic-attacks-t2824048
I even recommend converting to Dev edition fully and once fully converted it will OTA to the latest firmware for you .once your up to date you just use twrp/philz recovery and flash away

Thanks jball. I ended up doing something very similar (http://intoandroid.com/turn-gsm-htc-m8-google-play-edition/). Worked flawlessly and now I'm running Lollipop.

Your welcome
I came from that very conversion but what I don't like about the full conversion is the system is full to the max .
Now by converting to Dev edition and flashing the ROM instead I have all this system left cause of the Sense partition table
I'm still on GPE conversion...I had thought about switching to Dev edition though...which firmwares have y'all used ? I was thinking 3.28.1540.5...
Well I was going to screenshot boot loader, but I forgot the key combo for boot loader screenshots. Here's what I with
Hboot: 3.19
Cid : 11111111
Mid: OP6B17000
FW : 3.11.1700.5
Im using graffixnyc's android l firmware

You would want to use the 3.28.1540.***** cause if you did the earlier ruu you won't be able to OTA unless you change your CID

You think it makes sense to upgrade FW to 3.28.1540? Are the OTA updates the main benefit to upgrading?

No not the only benefit,
Stability when flashing the most recent Roms is another reason.
When flashing lollipop Roms it helps to be as up to date as you can in my opinion.
I found that when I flashed a lollipop firmware and then flashed a lollipop ROM it basically converted me to full GPE and left me with the system being about 200kb chey of having no space left (just like taking the OTA to GPE lollipop does)

Why would this matter? It allows you to go back to Sense ROMs. But aside from that, I don't think that having system storage available yields any benefit. Or am I missing something?

It mattered when I tried to move an 815kb file to "system/bin" when there was only 225kb of system left.
It's a known issue ,
So I went back to Sense and flashed the stock GPE 5.0.1 ROM and have over 1.5g of extra space (not that I could soak up that much space)

Ah, I see. So obviously if you try to add something to the system partition, and its maxed out, then that is a problem. Figured I was missing something.
