Guys,
I am about to received my SGS 2 tomorrow.
I am in Australia on a 850mhz 3g (read not GSM) network (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_G)
I know the phone supports this band, but I see some region firmwares floating around and am wondering if ALL firmwares support this band? Or is firmware specific.
Thanks guys.
Im on VR1.1 with everything else stock and next g is cool with me. Preordered from UK so mines from release.

Can I ask how you know your on Next G and not just 3g?
You can use non 850mhz Bands with Telstra and get std 3g.
Well im just assuming. But where i live all my family get 1bar with optus/3/voda whereas i get full bars. If u have a way for me to check ill have a look

not really sure how to check, the best I could figure out is install Network Info II and check network type
Should be HSDPA/UMTS?
I cant seem to find any tool to tell you exact frequency the phone is using.
It is not firmware dependent (If someone buys a Vodaphone branded SGS2 it is still going to work with NextG, but it will probably just be SIM locked). NextG is HSPA noted by the 'H+' symbol. When I was on Three is was just 'H' which is HSPDA.
If you dial *#*#4636#*#* and go phone information -> menu key -> Select Radio Band -> AUS2 Band
AUS2 is NextG 850Mhz, so if you get internet access on that, it is running NextG. The Phone Information section will also tell you your current network protocol also. If it is reporting UMTS then click the 'run ping test' button, it will flick over to HSPA
Hspa when data is being used
Umts when data is inactive

Also just rum some speed tests and you'll know if you're on 3g or HSDPA.

thanks guys.
Once it has charged I will put SIM in and test all this, very excited as moving from my HTC Desire
Sorry to dig this post up from the grave, but I'm about to move my SGSii to Telstra, as well.
I was wondering if you found benefit to these changes, and if you've changed anything further since.
Have you found any particular ROM/modem to be better (either in reception or battery life) than others.
And, finally, what sort of battery life do you get? I get about 14 hours before I have to plug it in, but I get terrible reception at work (I'm currently on 3), so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it.
Thanks heaps.
I put a friends sim card from t mobile into my phone and was only able to get 2g data. Does the international version of this phone get better speeds than that with different settings or something? Sorry if this has been posted already, I have not been able to find anything.

The phone does not have USA T-mobile 3/4g gsm bands. For 3/4G speeds you would need AT&T.I don't get more than mbs1 down

I also have same problem in India,
My Photon works well in GSM band, but when I'm manually searching network, it doesn't show any 3G operator!!!!!
I've used Radiocomm 11.12.2 for GSM/UMTS coverage, but there is no change..
Pls help me...

Does your carrier or service provider have access to 3G bands?

Annesh class
actually the phone has 3g capabilities
and since the phone is re-branded i guess the rebrander has locked it but the service provider has support of 3g and hsdpa
any way to unlock it sir?
I think there might be applications that allow carrier unlocking. Try googling some.

You may be able to try some of the modems available for the I9000. There is no way to know how well they will work but a few people from Europe have had a little success.
