So here's the deal...
I have a brand new G850W I wanted to root. I powered it on without SIM and connected to wifi. I did not add any account info for anything... Play, Google, Samsung, etc... The phone immediately started downloading the Samsung OTA update file. At this point I powered down the device before download of updated file completed. I did this because I had another phone that unexpectedly(and unwanted) installed the update and I lost my root opportunity. After the power down I did some research and found a successful root process via CF-Auto-Root. I used CF-Auto-Root successfully. After updating SuperSU app and opening it, it detected KNOX and successfully deactivated KNOX. Now I have a clean, rooted G850W.
CF-Auto-Root only flashes a side loaded recovery to complete the task of root and then erases that recovery and leaves you back with the original recovery... A few moments into playing with the phone, OTA started and completed the update file download and is requesting to run the OTA update install. This install is no doubt Lollipop.
My fear as you may have guessed by now is... If I move forward with the update on the now rooted phone, will the Lollipop update
1) remove root
2) reactivate KNOX
3) update and lock the bootloader
???????
'Cause then, ya know... I'll be screwed'a'rama........
Any thoughts????????

I did an OTA upgrade to LG8 and Rooted with CF-Root6.4 and now every time I reboot it shows the "Android is upgrading" message, so anyone know how to fix this without reflashing Rom because I won't be home until next week.
Try to remove the synchronization with samsung account , if there is still a notification, you have to do a wipe date , factory reset ....
unable to update after root
why did i can run the OTA after root? is it normal? the clockwork recovery said the the signature was not recognized.
Fundamental element in order to be able to complete the update process of the Galaxy is to have a firmware entirely original.
If you have on your phone a test version, root permissions enabled or a modified kernel installed (e.s. , CF-Root) will be unable to update.

Root no OTA update as per then thousand posts .
jje
I was Rooted when I got the OTA update and apart from this problem which isn't really a problem it all went through fine, so guess I'll just wait and use Odin to see if it fixes.
Hi all, I originally rooted my phone using this post several months ag http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2380325
I'm still fairly new to the dealings of root, and have found that I only used it to have access to a couple of cool apps that required root and at that rate I don't even use any more. That being said, I finally accepted the most recent update being okay that I would likely loose my root access. The update kept failing, I assumed because of the root. I backed up my personal data, and performed a factory reset from the phone. The phone still has superuser from the reset and still fails to update. Could someone help me return my phone to fully stock configuration? Thanks!

Find out what odin is. Then..
Google "odin emergency tar (your build number here)" or something to that effect.
If you don't know your build number then you have some more research to do. Good luck.
I'd recommend using the Verizon update assistant. Much easier, but takes about half an hour to do:
1) Connect phone to PC using USB cord
2) When prompted for what action to take when this device is connected, select Verizon update assistant. Installation will take a few minutes.
3) Start the update assistant and confirm that you want to update the phone. The update will take a few minutes.
When the update is complete, you should have the most current update (MK2), and no root access. Should you need root again, try Saferoot - it's quick and easy:

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys, I'll do some more research into both and report back soon.
Help! I've researched odin, downloaded and attempted to flash the stock image. Odin failed. My phone as of now is stuck in the downloading screen.

You need to flash the same stock image as what was previously on your phone.
If you don't know what version you were on previously, flash MJ7 or MK2.
Just purchased a used 6806. It is running what appears to be stock 4.4.4. I had to remove root by clearing it in the SuperSU app so I can install my corporate email - I don't require root normally. That worked fine, but both before and after "un-rooting", the OTA update, which I get a notification about, fails before installing. Any easy way to verify what needs changed, or is the solution to use flashtool to flash the latest? If so, will this further allow OTA updates to complete in the future?
Update - while the direct download OTA failed, I was successful installing the update using the Sony PC Companion Windows software.
As many of you Verizon S4 owners are aware, Verizon recently provided a two-part update, to update our phone to Lollipop. The first one simply updates the firmware from NK1 to NK4, and the second part updates it to Lollipop. Many of us, myself included, did NOT want to apply these updates, but mistakenly pressed the button to install the first update, to NK4. [It's pretty easy to avoid the second part since it requires loads of space to be cleared on your device before it can be installed.]
Sadly, when the phone updated from NK1 to NK4, we lost our root. Well, be sad no more! Thanks to my research & testing, I have put together a solution. I have done this on my phone and experienced no issues for the last 2-3 days.
These steps are similar to the steps for rooting NK1 - first flash NC5 through Odin, root using towelroot, and then re-flash NK4. I have seen many posts asking about the NK4 stock kernel, and no one seems to have it, even the sammobile site. Well, I got my hands on the Verizon update.zip for NK4, extracted the boot.img, and then turned it into a tar.md5 file that can be flashed via Odin.
So, here are the steps:
1. Go to this post and get your hands on the Towelroot apk, NC5 stock kernel, and Odin.
2. Download the NK4 stock kernel attached to this post (I had to zip it, to comply with the forum posting rules, so please unzip it)
3. Install Towelroot on your phone.
4. Shut down your phone, then boot your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the Home, Volume Down, and Power keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press Volume Up key) and Flash the I545_NC5_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
5. Once your phone reboots, open Towelroot from your app drawer and press "Make it Rain" to root your device. Note that at this point, your phone may be acting funny because of the flash of NC5. Don't worry, it will be fine once we flash back NK4. For now, just get Towelroot to root the phone. If it says it worked, then shut down the phone. [In my case, Towelroot said it worked, but the Root Checker app I had said I did not have root, so don't trust those, if Towelroot says it worked, it worked!]
6. Boot into Download Mode again, and this time flash the I545_NK4_Stock_Kernel in Odin. Once your phone reboots, you should have root!
7. Download SuperSU from the Play Store to manage root access. Done!
If you are unfamiliar with Odin and like a guide with pictures, there is a giude written for the original NC5->NK1 rooting, so you can follow that here, but remember that the second flash should be NK4, not NK1 that it says in that guide.
Ok, this is my first post here, so be gentle. I hope this helps everyone having the same issue as I did. I am so excited to finally be contributing to the xda site, after so many years of using it to root my various Android phones over the years!
Please Note: As mentioned in other threads on this site, you should NOT try to flash NC5 if you have already updated to OC1 (Lollipop).
You're my hero!
I'm working on one of these for a customer. The phone in question belongs to his wife, who is cheating on him. I needed root access so I could run Dr. Fone for Android and scan for deleted text messages, but couldn't afford to lose any of the existing data. Your method worked on I'm scanning the phone now. Thanks a million!
Thanks shmod, it worked for me as well, however it took multiiple tries because it would keep rebooting on itself, quite rapidly, so I had to move quick. Also, i had a previous version of towel root installed and somehow it was showing as installed apps but it was not in the apps menu, so I had to uninstall it and then reinstall to get it to work, it was a bit odd.
one question when i put my phone into download mode and i connect the usb cable i get no response on the pc. in odin i get no blue light at all and im on nk4 and with usb debugging on. any help would be lovely. please and thank you.
Hello! Sorry for my panic and sense of urgency, but I'm currently away for school and my lease is ending at the end of the month and I have no way to contact my parents, real estate agents, movers, or anything now. All I have is my phone and computer, and I haven't renewed my internet for the month so it should be shut off any day now as well.
But I was running Lollipop (OC1) and rooted my phone the other day with the terrible KingRoot. I attempted to use this app that was supposed to remove KingRoot and replace it with SuperUser but it only removed KingRoot - nothing else. So I lost root access, but still had all the KingRoot crap on my phone. Today a Verizon update appeared on my phone and I clicked install - I didn't think anything of it because it wasn't a major OS upgrade, just a small patch. Plus I thought it'd help remove KingRoot. Uh oh. I was wrong.
I installed the update, it went into recovery and then attempted to install. next thing I know all I see is a black screen. I tried pulling the battery and rebooting it, but I can't get passed the Samsung logo - it just goes to a black screen (but I believe it's still on, draining battery). If I try to boot into recovery it INSTANTLY starts auto-installing this update, which it of course always fails to do and gives me an error message.
My brother said I need to use 'ADB' but he's busy and can't email me much more information. I'm entirely lost, panicked, and scared! I need my phone working soon. I'm assuming theres no way to 'fix' my phone - so I'm just going to have to suck it up and realize I lost everything (man I wish I saved a lot of people I was texting as contacts *face palm*). What can I do now?
P.S. If I need to install a new ROM or whatnot over this, then can I do so with a pre-rooted Lollipop ROM? That way I don't have to risk using KingRoot ever- ever again. NOTE I NEED ROOT FOR WiFi TETHER! My internet is being shut off very soon, so to get by in the meantime I planned on using my phone and its tether.
No... You need internet access..
BUT... If you backed up everything to the external SD, then you can regain contacts..
Otherwise, Any attempt to fix it won't do anything...
ADB won't work on this phone either...
What you need to do is download a program called Odin, and a OC1 stock tar... That will recover your phone, but you will lose all contacts unless you had the Verizon contact thing...
I had the exact same experience as you yesterday... I had to put my phone in Download mode and start fresh with the Verizon Software Update Assistant. All I really cared about was my pictures, and they were on the external SD card. The other response about using ODIN to go back to OC1 works just as well... Best of luck!
Odin is your friend
Don't panic. You're contacts and other media of a similar nature are usually backed up regularly enough if you don't mess with the default sync settings of your stock rom. We can all agree Kingroot is a terrible way to root because of it's unnecessarily bloated bundle that it installs along with its super user app. To get your phone working you need to 'Odin' back to stock and from there you can root and install a custom rom. However your choices are very finite because of the new SELinux enforcing files on the OC1 build for the Verizon bootloader.
Step 1) Download Odin here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...08-2013-odin-3-09-odin-1-85-versions-t2189539
Step 2) Download the stock OC1 Build ROM for the SCH-I545 (Verizon Galaxy S4) here ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s4-verizon/development/odin-5-0-1-lollipop-oc1-t3174850
Step 3) Once the download has finished (use DownloadThemAll add-on in FireFox to boost download speed) load the tar.md5 file into Odin
using the AP button.
Step 4) Put your phone into download mode and plug it into your computer. Make sure the cables aren't loose and click start in Odin.
Step 5) Wait for the phone to reboot and for the com-slot in Odin to turn green (will say "PASS!!" when complete).
If you use KingRoot to root the phone then I suggest googling how to replace KingRoot with SuperSu and following the tutorial W0lfdroids website here ---> http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2015/05/How-to-Remove-Replace-KingUser-KingRoot-with-SuperSU.html
