s-off and root without revolutionary - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi friends,
I came across a vanilla htc thunderbolt of a friend that he asked me to root. However I'm now stuck on the revolutionary asking me the beta key which I can't provide as revolutionary site is down.
Do you think there's any other permanent s-off and boot loader unlock method?
Thanks.

I wouldn't trust any other method other than revolutionary. I still have my thunderbolt but I doubt I still have the file for revolutionary

I have the revolutionary executable but it's useless without the key that has to be generated from the revolutionary.io website that is down.

You are correct... The executable is useless without the key... Look here:

Many fellow users unlocked and rooted that way, it's a pain, but does work well.

Thanks for your reply but I suppose that guide also won't be help because the ALL in One tool depends on Revolutionary for doing the main thing. I feel the purpose of that guide is to be able to run revolutionary because in the ICS revolutionary exploits are patched. It still needs revolutionary though for s-off thing.
Following is an extract from the steps...
27. Download this ROM This is the .19 ROM from the All IN One Tool. Thanks to [email protected]
28. Place it in the Root of your SD Card and install in hboot (like a radio).
It will install the radio's first then it will reboot by itself and install the rest.
If all goes well you will be on .19 ROM and back to Normal.
Go to the All-In-One Tool and let it do it's thing.
First of all I don't know where to download the .19 ROM, the link is dead, do you have it?
Second, All in One tool in step 28 requires Revolutionary?
Is my understanding wrong or is there something else?

It took a small amount of searching but I think I found the roms. I remember using santods deoxed ICS rom way back when. The links are dead for goo.im but they may not be dead for other places. Did you unlock the bootloader and root the device?
And I was indeed correct. Santods uploads still exist at AFH(android file host). Just verified this via the infected rom website. If you need help getting the files for the rom let me know or post here

I found the files, thanks.
However can you confirm my understanding regarding the all in one tool dependency on revolutionary. If that is correct then I can't Complete the main step that performs s-off.
What about the old psneuter/wpthis method? Do I have to be on a specific rom version for that method?

Good news guys -- although it seemed that all hope to ever use revolutionary again was gone, I was able to get to it and generate a beta key. It seems that the site is still up, and it is just the domain name that expired. So if you open the hosts file on your windows machine (located at C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc, and also be sure to run Notepad as administrator in order to edit it), just add this line there:
176.9.40.155 revolutionary.io
... and the site will come up and function as normal.

You have to follow the instructions on the revolutionary website to get the key. It's specific to each device.

Why would anyone want to use HTC's unlock method? For one it void's parts of or all of your warranty. Second it is not a full unlock and does not allow you to write to all partitions. I would definitely wait for the devs to if I had the latest update, but since I already unlocked using Revolutionary then I will stay on a lower HBOOT.

[Q] How to unlock that damn bootloader...

Good day.
I have a rooted Legend (1.31.405.4), on which I want to load one of these experimental ICS ROMs.
Did it with my DHD, no problem at all.
Difference is, this Legend has S-ON.
I have checked HTCdev, they have only one .exe listed for the Legend. Downloaded that, did not work.
Is there any quick and easy way to unlock this thing?
Thanks in advance.
JD
Nope the htcdev unlock is the quickest easiest method.
You just need to read the instructions carefully and follow ALL of the steps.
Go to the dev section there is a dedicated thread with detailed instructions and ideas from the wonderful xda members
What you can also look at doing is following what blay0 said in the same dev thread about the hboot 1.02 you can update it without having to unroot/install stock HTC firmware.

Few more questions..
I found the posting but err... I am a newbie.
So here are a few simple questions:
1. How do I do a nandroid on a legend?
2. Which bootloader do i use from HTCDEV when my operator is not listed?
3. Where do I find the profile directory?
That is it. I have posted a question to HTCDev but no reply as of yet.
There is a way to work around not being in that list of operators, but I forgot what it was
Anyway thanks for your help.
For nandroids, boot into recovery and select the backup option. Or download ROM Manager and do it from there.

Yes there is a work around, that's the post by blay0 I was talking about. Btw newbies are ok only if they can read lol

If they can read?
Newbies are welcome as long as they can read?
Of course this goes for senior members as well: would be helpful if you could simply read the question, instead of getting so excited about being senior member.
As I said before:
- I checked out HTCDEV to find the appropriate RUU.
- My carrier not listed, but as they seemed all the same I downloaded it anyway.
- While running it I get the message the right ROM is not available yet.
As I have a 2 year old phone, and did nothing else but a standard unroot via a downgrade to 1.31.405.5, I can hardly imagine this.
FYI as BlaY0 mentioned I looked for the rom.zip, but cannot find it.
Dear jaydavidof I sincearly apologize, my comment was not meant with malice, the meaning was purely that being a newbie is not a bad thing. I do realize this was taken as being condescending and I'm sorry.
After you run the hboot1.02 ruu, but before you try to install it (after the wizard has unpacked it) search your entire hard drive for the rom.zip file.
Once you've found it follow what it says in this link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=22613990&postcount=62 snip, should have hboot 1.02 and unlocked by the end of that post.
Sent from my Legend using XDA
No sweat ranger, I say it loud: I'm a newbie and I'm proud.
Here's another newbie question: where do I get the RUU for hboot 1.2?
I have:
- Searched the htcdev site, cannot find my carrier
- Searched the 580 downloads, my Legend's not among them.
- Searched the net, same result
So what do I do now?
Greetings from a grateful newbie..
The hboot1.02 is what you have been looking for the whole time that's what the ruu from htcdev is, the zip component is inside the ruu.exe.
Sent from my Legend using XDA
So the question is: how can I install HBOOT 1.02.
When I run the RUU I get an error message telling me my ROM is not supported yet.
Is there a workaround?
According to Blay0 I have to find a rom.zip, but after running the RUU (and after the error message) rom.zip is simply not there.
Your problem is your not understanding what is written.
When you run the ruu, don't try and install the hboot don't even connect your phone to anything. Start the install process by running the ruu.Exe, after the install wizard has unpacked its files but before you reach the installing phase and while the install program is running don't close it, do your search, it will be in a temp folder on your hard drive.
Sent from my Legend using XDA
Done that.
1. Ran the RUU, found the rom.zip, put it on my SD card.
2. Renamed it to LEGEIMG.zip
2. Did the reboot bootloader command, phone goes to FASTBOOT.
3. There I select BOOTLOADER
Now it looks for files and tells me eventually LEGEIMG: No image or wrong image!
What do I do wrong?
Greetings,
JD
Well done that's a good step compleat.
Sorry my bad forget my last post the screen flashes up to quick to see the file name....the file I was seeing was LEGEDIAG.zip...
Do you have that file in the root of your sdcard? Or in a folder? It needs to be in the root...
Also what is the file size of the zip file...
Sent from my Legend using XDA
Hello Ranger,
I got some news to report: I reformatted another SD card (FAT32), and I put the LEGEIMG file (123,310 KB) on it.
It recognised the file, loaded it, and then..
it said CID incorrect, update fail!
There is some progress, that's the good news.
Any suggestions?
JD
Okay, more progress..
I have reformatted another SD card (FAT32) and put on there the LEGEIMG that has a size of 212 KB.
After adb reboot bootloader it recognizes the file and asks me do I want to update?
Do I want to update?
YES!
But now I go back to my bootloader and it still says S-ON, but above this there is now a line of text that says **** LOCKED (OOW) ***
This I understand means its out of warranty.
Now what?

Ok good, you have successfully updated to hboot1.02.
Now you must go back to htcdev.com and go through all the steps for bootloader unlocking procedure.
The final steps to unlock will be sent to you via email after you follow ALL the steps correctly and compleatly on htcdev.com website. Included in the email you get will be an attachment file I think its called unlock.bin DO NOT LOOSE IT it is probably the most important file you will ever get!
Once you unlock your bootloader you must then follow the S-OFF method for clockwork mod recovery. Goto the thread in the legend development section and read it and follow the steps involved.
P.s. don't worry about the s-on status, worry about the top line that says locked/unlocked.

[Q] [ANoobieInNeed] 3.06 Sense 5 root?

Hello all! I had just gotten the update for my Droid DNA device yesterday and in my opinion, it's just, alright. Not something crazy for me. However, right after getting the update I had discovered an early access S-OFF method titled, revone. It is apart of this thread right here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2314706 . Now, upon going through the tutorial I had of course ran into a problem and cannot report it over on that forum as I am new to this forum as a user with a new account, not a visitor as I had frequently visited this site before but now am a new user here and needed help asap. I have the sdk installed along with everything I need to use cmd and push that revone.dna file into my device. My phone IS NOT ROOTED and IS NOT UNLOCKED . This has been on my mind when I had recieved an access denied error for doing the command : ./revone.dna -P . The publisher of the thread that released this revone mod states, " fail to work everytime or in all cases or on different carrier ROMs - LET US KNOW if you get repeated failure on carrier variants". I plan on contacting them, but I just wanted to know if revone being in early access is causing this problem of not giving me access to S-OFF my DNA or if it is another issue. Thank you in advance!

You don't need to be rooted to do this. The purpose of RumRunner is to S-Off your device, unlock the bootloader, and root it.
Make sure you have all the prerequisites and follow the instructions on the instructions page exactly. If you still need support I suggest posting in the rumrunner thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559232
In order to see S Off you need to reboot your phone and hold volume button down to go to the bootloader page. At the top of the screen will say if you are S Off or On.

Ok well I revisited the rumrunner website and I realized that I was using the HTC universal tool to attempt the S-OFF process and not the Device specific tool for my DNA device (dlx). Is that the reason why access was denied for me to S-OFF my device? Now I understand from you that the tool is supposed to root the device, but what confused me A LOT was the access denied error I got from the tool. Was it due to me using the HTC universal tool and not my device specific tool?

Yes. The universal tool expects root access, and is followed by the disclaimer "Devices that cannot obtain normal root/bootloader unlock (e.g. Verizon HTC one) will still need to use the custom downloads specific to the device an mainver."

[Q] Droid DNA unlock bootloader/root?

my phone info is in the screenshots below. I was curious as to how to root my Droid DNA, but in order to do that I believe you're supposed to unlock the bootloader, which I haven't the slightest idea to do. Rumrunner works well. http://rumrunner.us/downloads-2/ the 306 version will work. At that point, if you want the 4.4.2 ota you can accept it as long as you have a stock recovery. You will still have unlocked bootloader and s-off after it installs. Then you can flash a custom recovery (I think TWRP is what causes less problems now), and whatever rom you prefer

Because in that thread I wrote an entire step by step for someone else.
For someone that had no idea how to root, I thought that would be easier than simply suggesting a program.

I used weaksauce alongside firewater, that step by step guide that was linked to is amazing!

[GUIDE] S-Off, TWRP Recovery and SU on the HTC Droid DNA

I recently got a HTC Droid DNA on Verizon and it's been stressful getting to the point where I can install custom ROMs from stock. More so than on any of the previous HTC devices I've owned. I've had to glean information from different sources very carefully to achieve this since the majority of the guides out there are outdated, misleading and even brick-bait. This guide is meant to help the recent converts to the Droid DNA go through this process smoothly and safely.
If you follow instructions TO THE LETTER and CAREFULLY and meet ALL the prerequisites for every resource on this post you should have not problems.
Credit goes to the owners and developers of all the resources following most notably beaups, fuses, WindyCityRockr and jcase. These guys have made our device much more powerful and fun to use. None of it is mine. I am neither a dev nor a coder. I just know how to type in basic, decent English
As usual, following this guide is voluntary. You are responsible for your bricked device. Turn on your brain before your proceed. Your warranty will be voided. I suggest you read through the ENTIRE guide and follow the links to all the resources listed before you actually attempt this. If at any point in any of the guides you realize you do not have or have not downloaded any of the resources listed, make sure your get EVERYTHING you need before you proceed. Your best bet is to have a working connection on both your device and computer while you do this. You will need ADB setup and running properly. Pay close attention and note when you have to change a file name and WHERE you need to put the file on your computer before every step.
If that scared you, read no further. Thank you for stopping by.
If any of that excited you, welcome. Proceed.
1. Make sure you actually own a HTC Droid DNA from Verizon Wireless. Not a clone or a lookalike or a butterfly. Make sure ADB is intalled and setup properly on your computer.
2. Start by following (STEP BY STEP AND OMITTING NOTHING. NOTE THE PREREQUISITES) Beaups guide to achieving S-Off using firewater here http://firewater-soff.com/ I followed the guide to gain temproot FIRST and after that followed the steps that apply to a rooted device. I'm not sure it says this in the guide but make sure you copy the temproot and firewater files to your ADB folder immediately after you download them. This guide allows you unlock your bootloader WITHOUT HTC Dev
3. Follow Phaded's guide to installing a custom recovery from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2318159
You can get TWRP's latest recovery image here http://techerrata.com/browse/twrp2/dlx Once again, omit nothing. Meet all the requirement before you do a single thing. Download every file and check the MD5 before your proceed. I renamed the TWRP recovery image to "recovery.img" since that is easier to type in a command line and copied the image file to the ADB folder on my computer.
If you have followed every instruction to the letter, you should have S-Off, an unlocked bootloader, root, custom revocery and SU.
4. If you like, you can download the WinDroid Universal HTC Toolkit, select your phone type, wait for it to download the appropriate binaries, confirm that it recognizes your device in ADB and fastboot modes and you can use it to perform various operations including update your recovery, issue ADB and fastboot commands and flash a new ROM. You can find that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2437614
5. Find a ROM of your choice and flash to your heart's content :victory:
Congratulations.
Once again, I take no credit. All I wanted to do was consolidate information that was scattered in different sources to make this easier. Hope this helps someone out there.
I'm pretty sure I've seen this method a few days ago but you made it a bit easier for me (because spanish is my main language).
I can't wait to get my droid dna. This will be my first htc device so I'm going try this method. Thanks a lot!

Firewater takes care of that.
I share your frustrations. I'm going through that now, because only now have i decided to root my phone after almost 2 years of having the phone.
I must ask, would these instructions work with the latest OTA?
Yes, they should. Make sure you use the latest version of Firewater though. Once Firewater does it's thing, you're basically home free.
I can't get firewater to run on my insurance replacement. I tried all the methods on firewater's page.
After running the last command it doesn't bring up any prompt like step 5 says

Are you on 4.09.605.5? That one has the anti firewater patch. Try sunshine. It may work. theroot.ninja

I had the same issue on Windows. I tried numerous Windows machines and had the same issue as you. But once I got home and plugged into my linux box, I was s-off and unlocked within minutes. Try a Linux system instead of Windows. And make sure you are S-ON or firewater will not do anything.

It's a refurb so it is s-on I'll try booting into linux and trying firewater. If that doesn't work I'll pay for sunshine

On a stock 4.09.605.1 using Windows 7, I was able to use firewater by following the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2742127 . To address any problems that may arise, read the entire thread.

I will have wait and see if anyone can crack the latest update. My daughter had my phone the other day and brought it to me because it rebooted. She allowed it to update not knowing I didn't want to let it
