Hi guys,
I've been trying to connect my s2 to my 5ghz wifi network but it doesn't seem to connect. I've read some reports that it works on gingerbread, but after ICS, the s2 has problems. I have a feeling now it is a hardware problem but I can't jump to conclusions.
What I've tried so far:
- NeatROM 4.1.2 + Apolo 4.15b
- NeatROM 4.1.2 + Philz stock kernel
- Slimsaber 4.4.4 + DorimanX kernel 10.45 v27
- Slimsaber 4.4.4 + Apolo 7.3
- Slimsaber 4.4.4 + Gustavo kernel
- Allow scanning on AUTO and 5ghz networks
- Change WiFi region code (Tried Australia, United States, Europe and Japan)
What I haven't tried?
- Stock 4.1.2 ROM and stock kernel
- Any AOSP ROM with inbuilt kernel
- Stock Roms before android 4.0.4
Now here are my possible conclusions:
- Dorimanx said that a WiFi driver update since Dorimanx kernel v7 removed 5ghz capability. This was when s4 WiFi drivers were ported, which means all other kernels have the same driver.
- Dead hardware? Unlikely since I take care of my phone and still running strong in 2015.
- Router? Well I bought the new router for a reason and I don't think that it has problems since other devices can connect. WiFi channel is 36 which is non-DFS. Encryption on WPA2-PSK which I'm pretty sure the s2 is more than capable to support it.
Now I found something interesting when using neatrom 4.1.2. Instead of immediately disconnecting, it gives the error message "authentication error" meaning that some went wrong during the connection. However, on 4.4.4 Roms, the phone won't even bother connecting not even giving any error messages.
Let's solve this problem once and for all for all s2 devices since only a handful of people have 5ghz connections whereas a majority don't.
What do you guys experience?
5ghz s2
For me works fine. Neatrom 4.1.2 + aplolo 4.15b
EDIT: Neatrom 4.1.2 + DorimanX 8.45 v001 TRIM works too.

I have a SGS II with Simplistic ICS RC7 and my main problem is that it doesn't seem to find the wifi hotspot created with connectify(software that shares your internet connection thru a wireless card) in my work (no router there).
Previousily i was on Miui 2.3.7 and it worked . Doesn't seem to be an ICS issue , more like a STOCK firmware issue, as my coleagues on stock 2.3.6 didn't find the hotspot eighter so i'm thinking it must be an modem driver issue or kernel. any help would be apreciated.
nobody knows????
I've no experience with connectify, but you could try changing out your kernel. Wifi drivers are in the kernel, I believe. Give Siyah a shot.
well the only custom kernell from siyah for ICS available right now is an alpha version. tested it. wifi still doesn't detect my hotspot.
Sorry, totally missed the part about you being on an ICS ROM.
I'm having problems in trying to do WiFi tether in my Xperia S. When i try to connect any device at my portable hotspot (at least i've tried with a Galaxy S3, Optimus 3D, Linux Notebook and Windows 7 Notebook), the device just cannot lock the IP address. It stays a bit in "Obtaining Ip Address", disconnects, tries to connect again, "Obtaining Ip Address", disconnect. Are any of you having issues like this?
Could we try to pinpoint the problem? It would be a custom kernel problem or a custom rom problem, a combination of custom kernel/stock rom problem and others? Maybe someone know somenthing that i dont, and it would be nice to have it documented here, so i created this topic to ask for your help in this issues! How can I solve it? Better, how can we solve it?
So above is the list of kernels and roms that i have tried and failed miserably in make my tether work:
Stock Rom Generic UK 6.1.A.0.453 with:
XSX Kernel 3.1
Advanced Stock ICS Kernel 11
The only mod i have at the phone is QuickPanel
i've been trying, using my self compiled kernel and stock ICS rom, nothing wrong with tethering, it just working fine...
Thanks for the test fajarep!
Here i got nothing!
Failed trying now:
- Flash LT26_6.1.A.0.452_Generic_CH_1257-3740_.ftf (read somewhere that generic/international firmwares have no restriction in tethering)
- Many tethering apps, rooted and non-rooted ones (max i got is a message of failure in setting ad-hoc)
-Adding a ",dun" at the end of my "APN Type" in Data-Management-mimimi-i-dont-remember-put-the-name-here-later-menu

hmmm.., I don't use Generic version, only using our SEA ICS version, it maybe doesn't have any problem with tethering stuff. So, I can't help anymore..
No problem with wifi tethering on stock ics and also on miui (both 2.7.20 and 2.7.27 with advanced stock kernel build 11). During the last two weeks I used it every day without any issues.

How is the battery life in comparison with stock?

Battery life is absolutely great in standby and just as the stock with the screen on. I have no complaints regarding the battery with miui.
In a quick test it seems that with MIUI i can tether. I will do further tests and report here
Glad to read that and to be somehow helpful!
Hi all
I have installed both AOKP build 4 and CM10 nightly Jelly Bean on my Samsung Galaxy S3 I9300. Unfortunately, in both ROM, the WIFI works but very unstable. It dropped after 10 mins or after the phone went to sleep for a while. I have tried a few methods to work around including the *#0011# trick, reflash to stock, turn on wifi then reflash JB. There are only two methods that work. First, using WifiFixer which is an app that can be downloaded from Google Play Store. And the other is to install Siyah kernel latest version (1.7b4) which has updated Wifi driver. Hope this helps
i have new problem in my i9100 ..i am now in rootbox rom 4.2.2 last nightly with dorimanx kernal 9.16 and wifi work good but when i update new dorimanx kernal update over the old one the wifi not work ,at all kernal ..even stock one but when i remove my sim card wifi work with all kernals again sooo any help please
Read about it in the dorimanx thread, either development or support. The wifi drivers were recently changed for the kernel. If the recent kernels have wifi issues, then you'll have to stick with the old ones or change to a different kernel. The new drivers work for 80% of users, the other 20% are our of luck as your hardware is incompatible. Bad luck mate :/
Sent from a galaxy far, far away
I got this problem that wifi won't work. But didn't tried no sim cart input!
Anyway I found the solution. If the rom you are using has the wifi region code setting in wifi advanced option, set it to a country (I chose Australia) it will do the trick and your wifi will work! And any rom without wifi region code option you will have this wifi connectivity problem since dorimanx said he won't investigate to solve this issue.
thanks my friends i fix it by wifi fix manager apk and change my region automaticaly and work again ...thanks again
Hi,
I have installed custom jelly bean CM 10 from this link after going thorugh forums.
-Flashed the kernel.
- installed CM 10 from downloads of CM site.
-Installed gapps.
every thing works fine including camera , internet on wifi etc but for some reasons 3G and bluetooth doesnt works after CM10 installation.
does 3G and camera supported in cm10??
Every thing works well check your network settings... Now we have stable jb roms
What kernel did you flash?
