Google Play Services - Kindle Fire HDX 7" & 8.9" Q&A, Help & Troubleshoot

A while back I had to freeze Google Play Services at 7.0.99 so that the store would continue to work, but that meant I couldn't run a few apps that were prompting for GPS to be updated, like the Gmail app (and Netflix, when installed from the Kindle store, prompts for this as well, oddly... but just tapping elsewheres on the screen lets you bypass it). Is the current version still buggy, or has that since been resolved so that I can update things?
Thanks.

Google Play Services will always be a compromise on FireOS as the two were never intended to work together (at least through v4; suspect v5 will be even less accommodating). Your best option is to install a different ROM (Nexus v4 or CM11) via Safestrap v4.

[Q] Google Play Store and other apps

Has anyone gotten google play store working? I tried following the steps from android cowboy but I get back to back errors for google services no matter what.
On a different note, is there a way to remove the ads/special offers for free?
Thanks,
Sean

Google play is a system apps so it's gonna need a rooted or modified rom with bootloader cracked. Same is needed to disable kindle offers.
So is there any good way of getting apps beyond side loading?

Only the second part is true. You can get the Google play store apk on any device, regardless of root or not.

You can get it on the device, but it won't work. ... from experience. If you know how, ... do tell!

Try this link.
Although it says Kindle Fire HD, ignore that. Ignore step 3. Also ignore anything that says about copying to /system/app.
Just install the apps in the order he has listed then install the "Vending.apk" (That is the Google Play Store). Please also note that you will most likely not be able to install apps from it. :/

Did you ever try 1mobile market?

One way to get a lot of Android apps onto Kindle, until we get root.

Seems to me like there should be some kind of app you can run on your rooted android device to pull the apk. Then install the full version on the Kindle via sideloading.

Better results
You'll get better results in the interim from installing:
a) 1MobileMarket
or
b) Aptoide
or
c) BlackMart Alpha (shh..)
Tinkering with Google Play Store components before we have root may be an exercise in futility.
The content of the link is quiet useful to me. Thank you for sharing. I decide to buy a licence. :good:
Anyone tried SNAPPEA TO passthru GooglePlay?
I saw a utility SnapPea that seems to allow a pass thru from a PC to Kindle Fire HDX for accessing GooglePlay. As I still have not ordered my HDX I was wondering if anyone has tried this.
Thanks in advance;

The SnapPea app that I just tested is a way to control your android device from a browser on your computer, similar to AirDroid. It does not allow access to Google Play for the Kindle. What it does do is help you to install an .apk file through the browser, but then we can do that already by allowing sideload anyway. So maybe you were thinking about something else?

Same here.. Just bought a Kindle Fire HD 2013 and tried every possible attempt described on many how-to to get it rooted for Google Play. Nothing worked. Device current version is 11.3.0.5.
Tried the side load as well described for HDX. Gmail app works but that's about it.
Anyone succeeded on this version?
Thanks

I basically got pretty much every app to work except for Hangouts and Play Store. This includes everything from Voice to Gmail to Map to Google Earth to Google Plus to whatever. The key for me was to start with base configs that Android Cowboy posted, but then add bunch of dependencies from android 4.2.2 and update with latest version of backed up apps. For example, I have had to install Google Play Services 3.2.66 first and then was able to update to 4.0.31 after reboot. That version was required for Youtube to work properly (i.e. allow account sign-in). Things still crash sometimes, but it's not a huge deal.
Main thing is Youtube, Music, Gmail and Calendar are all working more or less ok. Chrome signed into my google account, but its not pulling down settings (bookmarks, open tabs from other computers, etc...). Google Plus crashes sometimes but works. Hangouts is clearly missing a dependency of some sort. I installed most things I could thing of from default Android 4.2.2 CM10.1 apps package and from backing up my phone (galaxy s4), but it's still no go. It would be nice to get that going as well. Oh well, Skype can cover most things there.

Wanted to confirm that I also have Google Voice working on the HDX 7 (since I rarely see people mentioning it as a Google App). Interestingly, I also got Talkatone working on the HDX with my Google Voice number, even though the app's FAQ plainly says that Google Voice will NOT work with it. As a result, as long as I have wifi, I can now easily use my Google Voice number to make and receive calls.
When I download apps from other sources (1mobile) they don't show up in the multi tasking bar. Anyone know of a multitasking app to fix this?

I'm using the paid version of floating toucher to access recent apps.
To get apps to show up on the stock multi tasking bar you have to open them from the stock home launcher.

Correct. The multitasking feature on the HDX is basically just the Carousel, with exactly the same shortcuts in exactly the same order. The only difference is it's hidden on the edge of the screen until you pull it up. So, just as apps launched from alternative launchers won't show up on the Carousel, they also won't show up on the HDX multitasking bar.

[Q] Preventing automatic update of Google apps?

I would like to stay with Google Maps 6.14.4 as it is the one that plain works as I want it to (simple, easy to use, fast, precise(!)). This is the version I have in my rom.
My problem is this: Something is automatically updating my Google Maps to version 8!
I think it is related to the last release of Google Play Store which I am also trying to downgrade as it doesn't list an apps new permission requirements in red or marked with 'new' anymore. This causes people to install apps believing it doesn't require new permissions when in fact it does and now can spy even more on the user. Something is also autoupdating Google Play Store quite agressively (i.e. sometimes it is updated within seconds of being downgraded and usually every time I open it). Of course I have setup Google Play Store to not update my apps at all but as even the play store is updated despite this, something must force this upgrade!
So, how do I stop Google Maps (and Google Play Store) from being upgraded? Can I hack my android to prevent this from happening? I do have it rooted if that can help.
I am very frustrated with the Google offerings lately. They make stuff worse all the time for no obvious reason.

Apps want Google Play Services update but it doesn't like Kindle. Ideas?

I've got various Google apps running on my Fire HDX - Gmail, Google calendar, and so on. Last week I started seeing a notification that Gmail wanted a new version of Play Services, but I know that the latest Play Services (or any version past 7.099, I think it is) doesn't run on the HDX. So I downgraded Gmail, and it's happy.
However, another app I use, Business Calendar 2, is no longer updating itself properly. Since it piggybacks on Google Calendar, my theory is that it wants something in the new version of Services. Which I can't run.
Any ideas, short of replacing the stock ROM?

I heard the latest version of Google Play services (v7.5) integrates well with Fire OS. Look around the forums for conformation. I have no first hand experience as I run a different ROM

I saw that in another forum thread, but when I installed it, I got the dreaded "Google Play Services has stopped". I'll head over to that other thread and see what they have to say.

Rooted HDX Saturn - Problems with Play Store

Hello,
I own a Fire HDX 8.9 Saturn (4Gen) with FireOS 5 rooted.
I installed Play Store etc. and everything was working fine for months. All of a sudden the Play Store is not working anymore. Error DF-DFERH-01
I searched the Internet and deleted the account of accounts.db. I also deleted the cache of GApps but none of them fixed my problem.
I uninstalled all GApps and installed it from scratch (with elder App Versions. Then the Play Store worked again but when the Apps updated themselves the Play Store broke again.
Anyone knows how to fix this error?

Newest version of Play Services is proving problematic on various devices - especially those with custom builds. Well known liability of running Google services on FireOS v4. Your choices are to roll back to an earlier version of Play Services (very temporary solution) or consider Safestrap and a custom ROM that is more hospitable to Google's ecosystem.
Hello, problem is that Play Store updates itself immediately, so installing an old version is useless without blocking the update process but how could this be done?
Safestrap is not available for Saturn so this is not an option.
But thanks for your statement.

Sorry - missed the Saturn reference (d'oh) and FireOS v5 (d'oh again). The latter has typically been the best solution for Saturn users ... ie: upgrade to FireOS v5 which plays nicer with Google components.
Tough situation as you don't have a lot of options until Google gets their house straighted out. Play Service v9 has been a nightmare for many devices. It sometimes take a few weeks for things to settle down.
There is a technique to block updates but I'm not familiar with the details. Perhaps someone else will jump in with instructions or a link. I'll take a look as well when time permits.

As expected there are numerous home brewed methods for blocking updates to Google Play Services with variable outcomes and side effects. Suggest you wait for a compatible update or poke at some of the suggested work arounds to see if you can stomach the consequences.

Google play services stop working after Fire OS 5.3.2 update

After I updated my kindle fire HD 7 to the newer 5.3.2 version, the google play services stop working correctly: the YouTube doesn't launch (white screen on the startup).
I've tried to reinstall the app from the Play Store without success for that problem. After that I tried to install different google play services versions and I tried to install again the 4 APK needed to get the google play store working on kindle fire and I it get worse because I was stuck with a older play store version... after many tries I decided to restore the OS...
How I fixed that:
I did a factory restore on kindle fire, applied all the updates.
I didn't login with my amazon account
Installed the google play store using the instructions from this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/amazon-fire/general/how-to-install-google-play-store-fire-t3486603
YouTube working
After the google play services automatically update, I had to restart to device to YouTube start working again.
As long I can use the google play store and the google apps I will stick with the stock ROM. Also I noticed an overall increased performance with this fresh install

Did you install 5.3.2 with root ? Or just by itself (unrooted) ?
No root. I never rooted my kindle, no need of that yet
