Simple Tablet for FooBar or JRiver - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Simple tablet for FooBar or JRiver
I am looking for a quality Chinese Android tablet that has a retina hi res 9" or greater screen and used exclusively (90%) to drive my 'audiophile' music using the Foobar or JRiver android app. It will operate on a dedicated wireless 802.11n point to point network linked to a dedicated audio notebook running Virtual Router. It must be light, have a large battery life (8 hours?), easy to charge, non glossy screen, sensitive to the touch, not leave sticky finger marks all over the screen, and not too expensive. I am not interested in internet access (maybe once a month?) nor 3G.
The only other major app is an RDP interface to manage the notebook.
I was looking at the Onda V975M or CubeTalk 9x. Both are a bit heavy and probably overkill for my processing requirements.

im not very aware of what the chinese market offer ,but here are my recommandation for what you need
galaxy tab 4 (wifi only are cheaper)
lg g pad 8.3
both asus and acer offer a lot of budget tablets you may like one
finally the amazon kindles (i think you can sideload android apps)

[Q] Best 7" Android tablets with 3G?

I currently have a Motorola Xoom and I do love it, but I have come to realize that comfortably holding it with one hand while using it is not easy. It's constantly slipping out of my hands while I try to maneuver it around. I would like something just a bit more portable and maneuverable. So I am looking for a good 7" android tablet with 3G capability. Here are the specs I am looking for:
OS: Android 2.2 or 2.3
Screen: Capacitive Multi-touch
Processor: Dual-core (if possible, but not necessary)
RAM: 512MB (at least)
Internal Memory: 2GB minimum (4GB-8GB preferred)
Memory Expansion: MicroSD is a MUST!
WiFi: 802.11 B/G/N (Prefer Dual-Band N, but not necessary)
Mobile: 3G (4G would be nice too, but not necessary)
Price: Prefer under $200 but under $300 is more reasonable.
The closet tablets I have found to these specs are the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Dell Streak 7. I would like something that has a decent developer backings because I do love modding with ROMs and such. What scares me about the Dell Streak 7 is all the reports of soft bricking it by the NAND becoming Read-Only.
So any tablet gurus out there know of anything that meets the above specs? Thank you for your time!

Am actually looking for the same thing.
I've been using the Nook Color with CM7 and feel it is the perfect size for me as I do a lot of reading with the odd bit of surfing. It's perfect for reading on the train (with one hand).
For me, what's missing is 3G capability to be truly on the go but have not found anything at the moment. Would also be nice to have Honeycomb.
I'm waiting on the Galaxy Tab 8.9 which could just be the sweet spot in terms of size but would like to have a hands on. Also it is a bit more expensive. Maybe a Viewsonic 7" as well based on some quick searches or a Dell Streak (would be curious from other Viewsonic or Streak owners on their ideas?).
We just order 1 Ematic eGlide 7" 4GB Tablet it appears to have what you are looking for. I will post more here once I get it and see what it is like.

Ematic MID 7" Google Android OS Multimedia Tablet & Kobo eReader - 4GB with WiFi
I am just wondering how you like your Ematic? My wife found one on Ebay and thought it would be good for the kids for Christmas.
Good luck finding the original Galaxy Tab 7 inch (P1000 with 3G), even a used one.
Looks like the Dell Streak 7 is your best bet. There seems to be many refurb on ebay which cost < $200. This should be right in your budget.
If you have been using the Moto Xoom, you may find the single-core GTab a bit slow. I did have both the GTab and Streak 7 at one time (until I sold the Streak 7). I definite find the Tegra 2 of the Streak 7 much faster than the Hummingbird of the GTab in terms of app opening and screen transition / swiping. However, the reason I kept the GTab and not the Streak is that the GTab is far superior in terms of Adobe Flash performance - I am talking about watching Flash video in the web browser, NOT through Youtube app. I have the Gingerbread 2.3.3 Overcome ROM & kernel on the GTab and never had the urge to upgrade to HC or ICS, because it is running so well. If I remember correctly, I had DJ Steve's Streakdroid Gingerstreak on the Streak 7 when I sold it.
The GTab can play HD Flash video in the browser (all 720p smoothly, and even some 1080p in low bitrate). The Streak cannot even do 720p. There is a known problem of Tegra 2 with Adobe Flash, which affects all Tegra 2 tablets of that time including the Xoom, Streak 7, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and others. If you don't watch a lot of web videos and only stored videos, then both the GTab and Streak 7 do equally well at 720p.
The GTab also has great battery life (tested 5.5 hours on wifi watching web videos; tested 7.5-8 hours ebook reading + little wifi web browsing; dunno about standby time because I always plug it in when not in use). The Streak can only do 3.5 hour continuous wifi internet video and about 5-5.5 hour mixed activities.
I see many refurb Streak 7s on ebay, which come with Honeycomb. I have never used the Streak with HC (official or custom ROM), therefore I cannot tell you how good it is.
If you find your tablet slippery, you can always buy a gel back cover.
If you can wait a month or so, Google may be releasing a 3G Nexus 7. The only thing you'd be losing is the SD slot. But if you are used to using the Xoom you don't want to use Android 2.x on a tablet. The experience is so much worse IMO it feels like a giant phone. You should look with something with at least HC, preferably ICS or JB.

I really doubt any new model name brand 3G tablet would cost $250 or less.

[Q] Need advice on Tablet purchase

I want to buy my wife a 7" tablet for Christmas. Desired specs are: Android 2.2+, easily rooted and market install(I have rooted and installed market on a Pandigital Novel 7" table and a Viewsonic Gtab with a lot of help from members). She primarily uses it for crossword puzzles(shortz) and web surfing. I would like for it to be able to access a ad-hoc wifi, the Pandigital(hers) can not do this. I do not think she would need a lot of storage(memory?). Would 512mb of ram and 1ghz processor be over-kill? And it needs to be in the $150.00-$200.00 range. Could go slightly higher for an exceptional deal. Thanks
Amazon Fire easy. Dual-Core, best deal available, root should be available soon, maybe even a Honeycomb port!
Maybe look for a Dell Streak deal. Waaaay underrated. The resolution is criticized as being limited, but that's a little silly. It's a 7 inch screen so you can only REALLY use so much resolution before the letters get to small to read. The real problems with it are (I have one) poor battery life and poor viewing angles. Neither are big issues for many users. If you are sharing your 7 inch tablet with many viewers and have to watch from a wide angle, you may be unhappy if you are viewing from 50 degrees off-angle. In reality, it's never been a problem. Battery life really does suck...6-8 hours of "on time" and 4-5 or a little less with constant use. If that's not enough (it's not always for me), then just be aware. Ergonomically, it's among the best I've used. There's nothing on the market today in the 7 inch size compelling enough to make me change.

Help! Transformer Prime or Laptop?

Hey guys!
Firstly, I would like to mention that I do not own any tablet, nor any laptop. Now from what I've seen, if I want to buy a tablet, transformer prime is the best out there both in terms of price and hardware.
But my question is, for that same price (500 - 600), could I get any laptop with that kind of size and weight, but have better performance? I absolutely love the android niche and community and the hardware of the device itself. But every now and then I would love to run some old or decent games (morrowind xD, or halo) or perhaps use photoshop etc.... Would such a laptop, light, compact and relatively more powerful, at that price range exist? What are the advantages of a tablet considering my concerns?
Thanks guys!
be nice on the no0b plz
I was in the same case as you are before i bought the original transformer. No laptop no tablet, but a smartphone (HTC Desire) and a powerfull desktop computer.
Here's the thing. At this price point, the laptop you would buy will most likely be very bad on a lot of point. Build weight heat screen battery raw power etc.
But with a tablet. At this price you'll have the best in class.
So Yeah you wont do the same thing on a tablet and on a laptop, but some thing are better on laptop (work, heavy gaming) some are better on tablet (web browsing reading light gaming watching vidéo etc.).
The catch is that your laptop, being a low cost product, wont do its things very well, but the tablet will do what it does perfectly.
I could have bought a cheap laptop and be able to work on my CGs project on the go or play Skyrim everywhere but seriously... who wants to play Skyrim on a ****ty laptop with awfull graphics ? Who wants to work on a tiny screen with a slow ass CPU ? Working is bad enough not to worsening it by doing it with bad tools. And who wants to do this thing for no more than 2 hours top because that's what happen when you do heavy task on battery?
If you Really want to work or play big games on a mobile device, buy a real laptop (1000$+).
If what s your looking for is a mobile entertainement device with internet and some cool creative tools go for a tablet (the Transformer Prime !).
Plus tablet are hype and fun, and the Transformer with dock provide its fair share of "Woa effect " each time I take the screen away of what seemed until now to be a cheap netbook.
First off, a tablet and a laptop aren't really comparable at this point. I would recommend you get a laptop first, because laptops are capable of doing the practical things like word processing and photoshop and the like that tablets can't do yet. Tablets are still primarily "fun" devices compared to laptops (though tablets certainly do have some practical uses).
Yes, any laptop you get in that range will have better specs. I have a laptop in that range, and no tablets have the sort of capabilities my laptop has. But like I said it isn't really comparable, because they are 2 completely different experiences. As far as games, I've only ever played 1 game on my laptop: Homeworld (a 1999 game lol, old game but best RTS ever). Despite how old the game is, it still pushed my laptop to its limit, and I have a i5 processor. The only laptops that can run games well are really expensive, and so in that sense, I actually think in the under $1k range tablets are better for gaming.
Overall, a laptop is a much more practical choice.
the advantages to a tablet at this price point are going to be battery life, weight and touch input.
the advantages to a laptop at this price point are going to be more storage, faster CPU, more versatility when it comes to software.
downside to tablet: limited software (when compared to windows), less raw power
downside to laptop: subjectively worse gaming (at this price point, the tegra3 or ipad2 seem to have more gaming potential for well designed games than a $600 thin and light (as thin and light as possible at the price point) laptop, less battery life, heavier, thicker, no touch input (but possibly better keyboard/touchpad responsiveness)
so in the end, it comes down to what you are going to use your laptop or tablet for, and what features are a priority to you.
i have a laptop that i do actual photoshop/office/illustrator work on, but when i just need to take notes or write emails and stuff (as in, not get actual work work done, but sidework) then the OG transformer and my galaxy tab have been more useful than a tablet because of the lightness and battery life. for me at least.
Laptop is much better. Unless you use it as a supplement to other tech (desktop computer, mobile phone, heavy duty laptop), it is better to have a laptop. While you lose out on battery, it is simply much more powerful and versatile.
Tablet like Prime is useful as a netbook replacement. Something you use during lectures for notes, reading, browsing or viewing videos while on the go (plane, bus, carpooling). It has a long battery life, but is less than adequate for gaming (you cannot play any modern games on it, nor games that were modern ten years ago, even if they look better). It also has barely adequate options for document creation and powerful photo, sound and video editing is nearly impossible. A laptop is also much, much better when multitasking.
But if you have a device for gaming and office work and consider tablet a supplement to those tools, then tablet is absolutely awesome. Tablet is also awesome for people who don't do anything with computers other than reading documents and books, viewing videos and browsing internet. It's also great for kids.
In all honesty though, for the latter category, iPad 2 is a much better option than Transformer Prime.
The best thing Transformer Prime is for, is being a replacement for your netbook and supplement to your laptop/desktop computer.
I already have an iphone 4 and in all honesty I couldn't get myself to buy an ipad knowing that its identical to the phone.
Ive decided to get the Prime instead of replacing my 4 year old laptop.
Wow! You guys are really helpful! I really appreciate thoughtful replies. I have some good insight now!
Thanks again guys!
If you currently own neither laptop nor tablet definitely get laptop. For ~$400 your best option is Lenovo AMD APU E-450 based netbook with better graphics performance/gaming/media decoding than comparable Intel Atom netbook. This will allow you to do everything that you can do on a tablet with the added benefit of access to wider range of software especially productivity and games. If budget allows you can go higher end with Intel i5/i7 CPU, discrete graphics, SSD, etc.
Asus Transformer Prime is a great upgrade for someone familiar with an Android phone ecosystem and is ready to move up in size and performance.
Another option is in lieu of a high end laptop you can buy both the AMD APU netbook and the Asus Transformer Prime. If I was in your position and don't do anything very compute intensive on the x86 side I would go with this option.

Can't say I agree. He has made due without a laptop so far so to assume he would now need that extra functionality over a tablet would be a big assumption.
I currently do not have a laptop or a tablet but am getting the prime. Reason is that while there are a few things the laptop would be better suited for (like better word processing and excel) the fact is I haven't needed a laptop previously for those tasks and do not need them now. The basic office functions on the tablet will work fine for me (can format things at home).
When it comes down to it you need to really think what your main uses will be. For me its portable media consumption (much better on tablet) and annotating pdfs for classes (much better on tablet), and then studying off them. Sure a bit more power would be nice, but a tablet doesn't have to only be a laptop supplement, but a main PC supplement (which could be a desktop)

Transformer Infinity good for gaming?

Has anyone had much success gaming on tablet devices? I am going to be traveling for 3 months and I know I can't bring my PC along, so I'm looking for alternative forms of entertainment. I dislike gaming on a laptop due to it just not feeling the same as a desktop machine. I'm hoping a tablet's touch interface makes for a better experience. Cell phone games have been entertaining, despite their short-lived style.
I dislike Apple's business practices and attempts to monopolize their products through the use of proprietary connectors and similar technologies. So, I'm looking at Android tablets. Specifically, I want the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity. I like how it is designed for docking with a keyboard and I think I need a Tegra 3 GPU if I want to do any gaming on a tablet. Does anyone recommend a different tablet?
Get the 700.

Now why exactly am crazy about this tablet?
first i will tell you a brief history of devices i owned, dunno from where to start, ok lemme list it chronologically according to acquisition:
Galaxy Tab 2
Nexus 7 first gen
Samsung Ativ SMart PC 500T
Blackberry playbook
Nexus 7 2nd gen
Ipad 3 64gb wifi cellular
ipad mini 32gb wifi cellular
Ipad Air 1st gen
Samsung Ativ Smart PC XE700
Microsoft Surface Pro 2 core i5
Microsoft surface Pro 3 core i5 128gb
Asus T300 Chi 128gb
Teclast X98 air 3G dual boot
HP elite X2 1011 G1
Out of the above few devices have been sold and bought twice like Tab2, Nexus 7 2nd gen and iPad 3.
Then i will tell you that i didnt buy it at the MRP suggested by the company, i bought it for 40K INR, if you buy it for the suggested price of 90K then it will absolutely kill the purpose of this review. The recent prices are extremely cheap and i will drop few links below.i got it through a ebay india dealer who usually imports and sells at a reasonable prices in India.
Now the primary aim of a tablet is mobility and long battery life which is primary aim, apart from that my usage is focussed on reading pdf ebooks and scribbling over them so STYLUS SUPPORT IS MUST FOR ME. If you see the above list of devices i used then you will come to know that i used all sorts of styluses from passive wacom ones in SURAFCE PRO 2 and NOTE series phones, to active N TRIG one on SURFACE PRO 3 to SYNAPTICS stylus on ASUS T300 Chi.
Active styluses are better as proposed by most digital artists and i do agree, the wacom passive ones are not enough accurate towards the edge of the screens but after using them all i can tell you i am inclined towards the passive ones with good pressure sensitivity
no need of idiotic AAAA batteries which are damn costly and not widely available either
if your stylus has more tech inside the more chance of defects as happened with me!! The synaptics stylus was particularly irritating and the N trig stylus drained batteries
So in my usage case of writing notes i prefer WACOM PASSIVE STYLUS, obviously your mileage may vary depending on your usage pattern or priority.
Comparative Specs post mortem:
STORAGE:
If you want a big storage space and a tablet it will cost you loads of money, just think of the prices of ipads with bigger storages. Mine has 256 gb SSD and a very fast one too.
CELLULAR SUPPORT:
Now this also is an extremely important aspect for a tablet and if someone avoids one then the reason is mostly INDOOR usage scenario or Less frequent travelling and presence of wifi hotspots in your destinations but round the clock data acccess is a very essential part of a tablet.
Here you will see various companies charging exorbitantly for a cellular modem. Mine comes with 3G modem built in and works nicely though non 3G versions do exist.
BUILD QUALITY:
Now this is a very interesting aspect that i need to tell you, why the hell do you think i changed devices like surface pro 3 and Asus T300 chi? both are sexy as anything and extremely feature rich.....
Answer to above is both the tablets screens cracked on slightest impact as i couldnt get a case for both in india at that point of time so it cost me a lot of money for using SEXY devices so i decided no more again. The pro 3 was just kept from few inches from the ground while inside the backpack and T300 chi screen broke when a friend by mistake applied some torsion on the tablet while still connected to the keyboards.
HERE comes the HP ELITE X2 1011 with military grade build quality and mlg specifications and i have peace of mind while i carry these in my back pack with a minor padding. ITS NOT A GIMMICK AS ITS BUILT TO LAST
SCREEN QUALITY:
From the onset i will tell you the first negative of this tablet SCREEN LOOKS WASHED as it doesnt have the same colour gamut of the ipad or galaxy tab s2 etc.
This i corrected using intel graphics software thats there in windows side of this tablet
Now did i just say windows side of the tablet???? OMG somethings wrong with me, this one just comes with Windows Professional out of the box right? ok may be i am cranky right now.
TEXT INPUT MODES:
Now i see most people wanting to buy a aftermarket keyboard for using with their tablets but the original manufacturer only meant them to be TOUCH ONLY devices for media consumption and not for DOING ANY "REAL WORK"(oops this line is so cliche right now among various OS fanboys)
So how does my Tablet fare here? it comes with a POWER KEYBOARD with a awesome keyboard
has 2 USB ports
AUDIO out 3.5mm port
Smart card reader( immaterial to me)
Finger print scanner that is as good as in laptop worlds though old swiping tech and not just Touch tech as introduced in iphone onwards and now ubiquitious
Mini display port
Extra battery though a bit smaller than the one inside the tablet( i am intentionally leaving out the specs part not to make it too technical as its just a user point of view) this extra battery almost gives me half the battery life that the tablet battery gives
So i think its an awesome accessory to have and was included in my deal, remember ASUS T300 Chi keyboard was bluetooth one so unusable inside BIOS settings and you just have to pray that the display touch never stops working else forget about BIOS tinkering(though i somehow managed to buy a extra usb keyboard and used the micro usb port to change few settings but it was irritating as my tablet crashed and i had to run to market to buy a KB to do a clean windows install)
PROCESSING POWER:
My model comes with Core M 5y71 with 8gb ram and 256 gb HDD. few years back i was of the notion of buying the fastest and the best thinking thats the thing i should have and i will keep that thing for more than a year but i found benchmarks and reviews showing benchmarks are for nerdgasm and only cater to fanboy fanaticism.
I never had used my gadgets to proper or maximal use as i was constantly worried about battery dying on me. I realised in due course that any portable gadgets achilees heel will be its battery. So my gadget buying decisions are always oriented to battery life than absolute best performance. I have reduced my GAS (GEAR ACQUISITION SYNDROME) after i used a hell lot of GAS
Anyways the processor is more than adequate in everyday tasks and portability in mind. This is no surface book...
OS:
I had this TAblet since almost 5 months but why am i reviewing it now?
Ok, it came with Windows 8 Professional and immediately i upgraded it to Windows 10. I was a part of the INSIDER PROGRAM and used to keep my tablet in the Fast or slow ring depending on my wifi speeds
I used to use all desktop apps and many apps from the Windows Store, but something within me was always itching to ditch windows and go for some OS with more apps even though am not a avid user of any specific apps but that feeling of extremely few apps when you are browsing the store used to irritate me.
I then looked into Bluestacks player....... Bull **** on this processor cpu/gpu with stutters as its demanding app and runs within windows
Then came AMIDUOS much better than Bluestacks for this processor and usable for all apps but fluidity was missing and games were still a no go
Tried few times to get Android X86 to work but the enterprise security that comes with this tablet didnt like the install and i couldnt go ahead in selecting the usb drive
Then similar situation with Remix OS 2.0 failed
So days just passed by and then i saw Remix OS 3.0 marshmallow variant being introduced and reluctantly i downloaded it. The file now comes with its own installer, i double clicked it and accepted next and voila, bootloader got installed and a single restart took me to OS selection screen..... WOWWWWW
Remix os on tablets simply rocks and the Android OS simply flies on this hardware with 8GB ram and processor
all games open instantly and its just like native android OS here, everything just works except wacom pen digitizer in android environment(i can live with that )
there are some cons to this tablet cum pc too will list them some other time for now sayonara.......
Sounds very interesting. Was the installation straightforward?
i just try remix os on hp elite x2.it works well so far
