My experience with Sony Xperia M4 AQUA so far... - Sony Xperia M4 Aqua

-overheating issues(you can literally cook eggs on the back of this phone)
-low gaming performance, games stutter a lot, some even run with less than 20FPS(just look at this - twice cheaper phone outperforming m4)
-low available usable storage(under 2GB)
-takes forever to charge(5 hours+ via USB)
-takes forever for the camera to focus
-no way to root it
-no way to unlock the bootloader(apparently now you can)
-overall feels very laggy, unresponsive and slow
+waterproof
+decent camera
If i have to make a conclusion i'd say its the most disappointing phone i ever bought and just suggest to people to avoid it.

Overheating issues? I get a max of 60 degree Celsius, not enough to cook
Gaming and performance issues - Yea.. Sony screwed up with
.99 update
Storage space - I got 3GB free lol. But yea, I feel you.
I can charge faster than 5hrs!
Camera focus is okayish, it outperformed my friend's Mi3 so I'm proud.
Root - Almost there I think
Bootloader - It's unlockable already.
The phone isn't that too bad, just the firmware that screwed the performance. Downgrade the phone and you should get a better experience.

I mostly agree with AndyPhoenix9879
Mine doens't seem to overheat that much even after hours of 3g web browsing ( i dont play games)
Performance is a issue with 2.99 thats why i flashed back 1.100
storage is a problem but after unistalling all bloatware and disabling anything else (that i dont need) i got 2.97GB free
Charging with a 1200mAh wall charger takes no more than 2 hours, if you charge only with computer usb 5 hours is ok, pc usb gives up to 500mah so a 2400mah battery needs 2400/500 almost 5 hours
camera is just ok
root, hope it comes soon and bootloader as AndyPhoenix9879 mentioned is unlocked already.

Overheating is the biggest problem. Using camera make the phone hotter, capture picture is so slow. I'm on plan to buy a second phone while sony M4 let me down day by day.

The problem is not root. Camera with 54-100Mb/s is fast,I push button and no lag. Very good performance with firm.112 35400 in antutu. I play emulators ppsspp,reicast,mupen64 and my phone no is hot. Only when charge by USB and I do hotspot wifi and ftp server and play at same time because no power in USB to charge.

Is there anyway to get otg?
Like by using a powered Otg cable.
Xperia L got otg in a similar method.
.112 is the spanish generic firmware of m4 aqua.are you absolutely sure it doesn't overheat?

Yes, I'm sure. If you want I can do any test. Only hot when charge by usb for many hours. My phone is UK without company, with 112.

Im using newest firmware 2.99 and im not seen lags and times where phone got slow..
Overheating.. Max temp. 80*C, okay..
But bad game performance? No no no, WoTB max settings 30-50 fps, MC5 normally playable, GTA3 Normally playable.. Etc.

The E4g have much lower resolution so it is absolutely not comparable performance.

25% less to be exact(1500 pixels versus 2000) and costs 50% less(130 euros versus 270) , why can't it be compared?
BTW: My phone seems to get around 29k on antutu on 64bit(just after factory reset), no idea how you are getting 35k.

Downgrade to spanish firm 112 from xperiafirm with flashtool. 35400 in antutu, you will have mass storage option again amera faster and no lag. Y play ppsspp at full speed with tekken soul calibour, shenmue in reicast...

I got this phone to replace my broken s4 for a period of time. I think most of my issues with it can be resolved once root is achieved and an optimized stock OS rom is made.

Well 540x960= 500 000 pixels (approximately) for E4G. For m4 aqua we have 1280x720 which is 921 000 pixels. Almost twice more pixels for M4 Aqua to process. About the antutu result - results around 35000 were achievable with first firmware (.112). With current one more than 30000 is really difficult.

They have two totally different prices. The Snapdragon 615 is an oven, and the only thing they should REALLY improve is the focus speed and video quality.

Hubby brought a couple of these home last night to replace our seriously outdated phones (his was a blackberry that he ruined dropping it into a river, mine is a trusty old Optimus LG One that is still ticking but showing it's age). What I have seen so far
1 - came with 16gb and had 9 free so not too bad there, can upgrade with a card to an extra 128...should do me for a bit
2 - yes it gets quite warm during constant use but not unbearable, cools quickly
3- my wireless router is dieing (sigh..I loved my old DLink DR615!!!)
4 - holy freaking updates! holy bunch of crap bloatware!
5 - no pre-installed games? With all that bloatware you think they would at least have solitaire or something to kill time while updating everything
6 - camera...meh it's a phone, not a high end picture taking device but does fine to capture those spur of the moment happenings, haven't tested video yet
7 - like the display - netflix, crackle, etc all play clearly, very watchable
8. love lollipop plus the Sony overlay - they have incorporated some of the key features I used to have to download seperate apps for like silencing the whole phone with one click, move to sd, flashlight, etc... little things but it makes the overall experience nice.
9 - sound quality is decent for a midrange phone, call quality is great
10 - it's soo much bigger than any other phone I have had! First phone I had that didn't fit in my jean jacket pocket! that could cause some issues as I am very forgetful LOL
In all, no major complaints... once I get my internet connection woes sorted with the router I'll be able to download my larger games and see how it does there. For now I got Frozen Bubble installed so that will tide me over

I quite like the phone, but I'm getting a pretty strange bug - sometimes when I record a video, it comes out as black plus sound. Even in the pc I can't see anything but I can hear the sound. When I reboot, it's back to normal. It happens when I really want to record a video and then I realize that I haven't got anything. Is there anybody with the same problem?

Yeah as it might be the only solution, I can't just always do a test video and then reboot if it is black. The last time I wanted to record my squash match and then after 40min of recording it came out black. Hope they'll fix it with 6.0

Z5C or Z3C?

Hey there,
I want to buy a new phone and put my C5303 away ... I am saw some people complaining about overheating Z5C. Should I buy Z3C or Z5C?
What will I do with the phone?
1.Play HD games (rr3,asphalt 8 etc.)
2.Texting
3.Take so much photos (not recording videos so much but I will record some)
4.And of course phone calls
Thanks to those people who will help me
Z5c. The camera is far better than on z3c. So is gaming
Go for the Z3 compact! Ive had the Z3 compact and now ive got the Z5 compact, the Z5c heats up when playing games (even with less demanding ones like terraria) and this results in battery drain. Where the Z3c used to last me a day with the same use the Z5c has to be charged twice daily. I would go back to the Z3c if I could, it was a great device and probably the best phone I've ever had.
Z5c definitely gets warm but not super hot unless you are installing apps or doing something intense while gaming...
I myself play asphalt 8 and it's really just fine, works great.
As for battery life, any heavy 3d app is bound to eat battery on any device , I'd say you can get over an hour of gaming and still make it to the end of the day, I've never had to charge my Z5c twice in a day and with casual use (no heavy 3d gaming) I usually start the next day with about 50-60%
If you want a dependable camera, you'll need Z5c. Z3c's camera is really not good at all. I've had both and the difference is significant. Plus, the capless usb is a huge advantage. The front camera is also far better on z5c.
I was in the same doubt: Z5C for sure! the construction itself (the z5c it's nicer than z3c), the battery is ok (normally use: BT activated non-stop, Mobile Data, 30min-1h angry birds 2, about 2-3h calls, and playing around the phone a lot, music about 1-2h - charged in the morning, and in the evening is about 40-50% which is impressive for me, coming from Galaxy S6 dual sim where I had to charge it twice per day!). The camera is definitely better (I spent about 1 day to compare other phones with Z5 and Z5C)
I won't call it either warm or super hot but it does heat up. Camera on z5c is way better and screen improved. The battery life will just getting better after Android 6.0 so it should not be a problem. If you do real playing HD games full day then z3c might be more safe for it's lower temp.
So most of you guys are saying that Z5C is better than Z3C. I will get the Z5C %70. I will get it from Dubai so not sure about the price. Anyway thanks for help I think Z5C should be a good device for me. Have a nice day!
I have the Z5C and I really dislike it. Great phone ruined with Snapdragon 810.
Some things are just unusable on this phone. Like WiFi hotspot with LTE. Phone turns it off automatically after a while since the phone gets too hot.
Really disappointed on this phone. 1/10
Edit:
And this issue happened to me while the phone was not even charging, so I'm guessing that it lasts even shorter period of time if the phone is charging.
We used to use my phone as a router while not at home since I've got unlimited 150 MB/s LTE data plan.
But with this device it is actually impossible to use it for this purpose.
Also the phone also shuts down the camera if taking 4k video for more than a few minutes. The same error message appears about the temperature as with the LTE WiFi hotspot.
Other that that the phone is great, but still. Anyone needing these features should get some other phone.
I could live with these issues if the phone was actually cheap, but Z5C is not a cheap phone.

I use my phone as a WiFi hotspot often and have never had it turn off by itself so don't make an assumption all of them will do it.

No, I wouldn't know where to find 150 Mbps LTE. I use it like I imagine most people do, with one or two devices to access various web sites. I do stream Youtube with it and have not had any problems. Yours sounds like a special use case.

Yeah sorry if I was vague about the issue. But yeah light use is no problem. But my previous phone had no issues with this kind of usage.
Perhaps I'll need to root and downclock or something when using this for that purpose.

Does the Z5c still overheat?

I'm getting ready to pack in my M8, and I want to go the same size or smaller for under $450 (tops). The Z5c seems to be the only Android phone that really fits that bill while keeping respectable performance, but there are two issues that have me thinking twice: overheating and the "self-cracking glass".
I know nothing can be done about the screen (unless a tempered glass protector helps to keep it intact), but the overheating, if fixed, could sway me away from the Honor 8 or LG G5. I've read that the firmware update that came along with Marshmallow has largely fixed the problem, and combined with a patch available here that throttles the phone a little more aggressively, heat is no longer a big problem. That said, I'm concerned about gimping the performance of the phone in order to keep it from char-broiling my hands. How noticeable is the throttling and, if thermals are still an issue with the phone, how big of one are they?
If you wouldn't recommend the Z5c, the thermal issues remain or the throttling hurts performance in a noticeable way, I'd be curious if there are any other phones (with a micro SD slot) that you think are worth looking at.
Thanks!
Hey , i have my phone from March
this year, 3-4 updates still overheating..
battery top 46C, and cpu 60C MAX so far and stays there,
but! when battery reached 40C+ and CPU 60C+, device become 50% slow (i guess to prevent overheating)
on some games\apps you feel it, some not,
even on anutu cold device is about 90K hot device is about 50K score
after 5 -15 minutes of gaming already from 28 to 43, (depend room temp and game\app) sometimes i can shoot 4K videos for 10 minutes sometimes 1 hour
i think self cracked glass happening because two reasons
1 mainly reason: moving fast from cold when the glass is pretty hot by much (heat cause expanded)
2.sitting on device without notice
ps
sorry if my english is bad

Thank you! Do you know if the X Compact will run any cooler? The lower power chipset can only help, but I'm concerned about paying $500 for a phone that might not be as powerful as its older brother, which now retails for $100+ less, especially if the overheating and cracked glass issues aren't solved.
If only the Honor 8 wasn't riddled with iOS disease...
you're welcome
As far as iknow for the X compact does not have 4K, slower GPU,(CPU speed is about the same) not water resistant \proof
but he run abit cooler and got more RAM 3 for multitasking
i own only Z5 Compact

Any S810 device will overheat, it's inherently badly designed. Sony's hardware thermal solution is probably the best any OEM have done with the S810. It's also possible that Sony has optimized under-the-hood settings to further reduce load on the SoC and keep the temperature down.
Other software tweaks are mostly just a balance game of performance and throttling threshold.
Stock Sony firmware goes the more conservative route, so usually you won't experience noticeable heat when using it lightly.
It will still get pretty hot if you use it for intensive tasks that utilizes the full capacity of the hardware, such as playing demanding games, record in 4K for a long period of time, or watch videos that need a lot of complex decoding... etc.
If you're looking for performance without "unnecessary" throttling, just avoid all S810 devices.
Personally, most of the time I had no problems with the temp and perf of my Z5C, but there has been a few cases where I did experience slowdowns due to the throttling.
Got mine from December 2015. After few weeks of usage, it really overheats a lot. After several updates through the months, Device still overheats until now, still uncomfortable to the touch when it overheats. Tried reformatting yesterday, performance seems better with less bloatware stuff and on regular usage. But when cpu is under heavy load, device heats up and performance is reduced a lot to the point that it lags. But overall, still love my Z5C~ <3
It overheats uncomfortably. I tried xpower 4.0 ROM, smarttemperaturex mod, etc although it does reduce heat but not enough to be comfortable and im not talking about heavy tasks I'm talking about Firefox browser, WhatsApp and tapatalk.
The phone is almost never room temperature when using its either warm or hot which gets annoying after some time, don't even let me mention how hot it can get with few minutes of phone calls.
Sent from my E5823 using Tapatalk
I'd say go for X Compact. Zero overheating issues. This heat actually gets on your nerves at one point. While the gpu of X Compact is inferior, in long periods of gaming there won't be any throttling on XC but Z5c will give half the performance so at the end of the day, the X Compact will feel a lot snappier
Sent from my E5803 using XDA-Developers mobile app
It overheats like crazy. I'm flashing 5.1 in hope that it will help.
When running Antutu i put my phone in refrigerator so that I can get a better score! :silly:
Any new cpu is hotter than quad-core of sd800/801 bcoz it's now much faster, even sd820 gets hot during heavy loading though better than sd810.
I've flashed SmartTemperatureX v1.61(no charging bug) and found temp is acceptable and battery life improved a bit.

Is it worth upgrade?.

i am a LG V10 user. now i wanna upgrade. especially am looking for better screen(vibrant), battery performance, with sd card support, ir blaster, camera in low light(i love shoot pics in low light my v10 performs good), custom rom support atleast want root and custom recovery, etc., i searched for a better upgrade finally i cornered this mate 10. i never ever used any huawei device before. is mate 10 worth upgrade?.

2. how's the battery performance?.(v10 is horrible in battery performance, SOT rarely touches 4hrs)
3. how's audio performance in earphones(is stock earphone sounds better)?. with hifi dac in v10 audio performance is good with high impedance earphones.
4. any heat issues after playing games or watching videos for long time.(my v10 crosses 45C after half an hour of gaming. in outdoor can't think about gaming or streaming videos, with the help of SD 808 proccy can make sandwich for breakfast).
5. any screen retention(ghost image) or bootloop issues(v10 is popular in bootloop issue, search google).
6. call reception, data connectivity and wifi performance?.

1. The screen is readable in sunlight because the phone has good brightness.
2. The 4000mAh should get you a day and a half with light-moderate use. I have about 5-6 hours SOT
3. The audio with headphone jack is pretty good but I heard the bluetooth is terrible.
4. The phone stays pretty cool even after hours of streaming. Playing games gets warm but not hot.
5. No bootloop issues unless you mess with the bootloader or if you mess up while updating the firmware manually.
6. All good
Do not upgrade. Software is crap camera is crap updates don't fix anything and break more things then you wait months for another update. Random reboots too. Only Good thing is screen and battery life.

The same here. One of the best phones. Speed, screen, batery, very good for me.
These are all opinions but I will say I have a Pixel 2 XL, had the s9+, and other devices I switch up.
I just picked up the Mate 10 Pro as an open box on sale at Best Buy in excellent (not even used) condition and I can honestly say it's one of the best Android phones I've ever used. Battery life is the real deal I can get 6-7 hours SOT easily. I like some of the features the software provides, and the call quality is outstanding. Like the speaker set-up. The full screen with the navigation dock is awesome.
I really like that the screen is mostly flat and not curved like the Samsung's, and even my Pixel 2 XL. Colors are very natural, quality is much better than my Pixel 2 XL.
Of course nothing is perfect I do wish it had wireless charging, and offered a Quad HD option like others.

thank you for your detailed info about the phone. just am looking for a phone with good dispaly, good speed for daily activities, especially less heat(really i burnt my hands after using v10), bluetooth, i use it very rarely so it's not a problem for me.
if the bootloader is unlockable then it's a boon for custom recovery and rooting(i requested lg so many times to unlock the bootloader of my v10 varaint but they never listened to me - dumbass).
my main usage are calls via VoLTE, data and wifi connectivity and some social media apps.

good that you have nice experience with lg. but for me not like you i don't like their policy. it's worst than (cr)appple policy. lg promised that v10 will receive every month security update but, after nougat update till now not even single update was released. unlocking bootloader and rooting is a mirage. my v10 is already suffering from screen retention, overheat and lagging issues. i don't know when my v10 going to face the infamous bootloop issue. fingers crossed :fingers-crossed:

Of course nothing is perfect I do wish it had wireless charging, and offered a Quad HD option like others.

nice, you got a excellent condition open box mate 10. hope you enjoying much with it. yes, nothing is perfect me also missing the removeable battery.
If you are getting one I suggest you get the Pro version which has much better battery life

I have the pro version so the experience may be a bit different from regular Mate 10.
1. Mate 10 Pro has AMOLED screen. It's VERY bright and the color is quite good.
2. Battery is very good. It can last a day of heavy usage (playing Pokemon Go for hours) or 2 days of light usage.
3. The audio quality for wired headphone is ok. It's not bad, and depending on the type of music you listen to, the Huawei Histen sound effects may slightly improve the experience. However, it has the typical Android SRC issue (all outputs are re-sampled to 48khz/16bit). This means that if you have Hi-Res music files (96khz/24bit), the audio signal will be down-sampled and becomes the same or even worse than CD quality (44.1khz/16bit). AFAIK, LG V10, when using stock player, doesn't have this down-sampling issue. I don't have any non-Huawei phones to compare, but my FiiO X7 (professional Hi-Res audio player) definitely has better audio quality than Mate 10 Pro (I use Sennheiser IE800 IEM). There are also some issues with Bluetooth audio. When using AptX-compatible bluetooth headphones, there is a small pulsing noise when music just starts.
4. No heat issue at all.
5. If you don't unlock Bootloader and try to install un-released firmware, you won't experience any bootloop.
6. Pretty good. Be sure to check if your carieer's frequencies are compatible with the phone.
EDIT: grammar
Of course it does

oh yes, because of amoled screen the battery life is better i think. if pro version has the sd card support and 3.5mm jack then def. i will buy it without any second thought. not only me most of the flagship lovers do it.

if it's last for atleast one full day with moderate use then it's enough for me.

in my lg v10 i love to listen hi-res audio with the help of dedicated hifi dac. after receiving mate 10 i have to test both phone's audio output. bluetooth? i use it very very rarely. yearly once or two, i don't know when i used bluetooth last time in my v10.

most expected thing. after using v10 for long now waiting to have a device with less heat. i think, kirin is better than sd in terms of long use and thermal management.

mostly i won't do flashing but for rooting and custom recovery unlocking bootloader is required. i am afraid if i install any custom roms some unique features of stock rom won't available so better i stick with stock anytime.

mate 10 supports mostly all the frequencies i think so data connectivity and volte support won't be a problem. good to know that this mate 10 supports dual 4g and volte at the same time. great feature.

Heat

Some phones are great to take camping because if you play Asphalt 8 long enough, the back warms up to the ideal temperature that can bake bread. Rate this thread to express the extent to which the OnePlus 8 Pro stays cool under extended heavy use. A higher rating indicates that even when playing strenuous games for long periods of time, the phone doesn't get uncomfortably warm.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
No complaints really here but noticed it running warmer than my Exynos Notebultra 20. By a Celsius under my regular usage patterns.
Here's my GSAM temp charts.
We've recently entered Spring here in Australia. Using the phone outdoors on the weekend in 34 degree temperature and full sun, my phone would overheat and prompt me to shut down services after about 5 minutes of casual use (web browsing and background services only). I removed the genuine cover which helped a little, but still frequently overheating. This phone is useless if it can't be used outside...
According to the Health and Safety guide accessible within the phone itself.

Yeah, I've got same issues. Left couple of times in UTE and every single time it switched off due to high temperature. I did not have issues with another brands. Top dollar useless phone.
When I experienced the temperature issue I was running OB2. I'm now running the stable build, and it seems a little better (though I need to do more testing). What version of the OS are you running?

Hi,
Thanks for replay. I am on latest Android 11 (Oxygen OS 11.0.1.1.IN11BA) and for me there is no any improvements. For me it is frustrating because I need often use it as hotspot.

Ex kernel manager
Gonna have to chime in on this one. Coming from the 7 pro I was expecting better.
Have had some quirks with this phone still working on one being it likes to not wake the screen up now and then right away. Annoying but the only real gripe is that when I record a video... Jesus that overheats it.
4k @30fps screen brightness half, 120hz, qhd. Overheats around 930 to 11 on the dot.
Brightness down does nothing
60hz and fhd allows me to keep recording after it overheated (meaning it will stay under the line of what's the redline for overheating with the screen turned down even if I just bounced the flash off)
For kickers I threw it into 1080 p mode @30 and she **** flash down around 5!!!!!
Honestly the main gripe I have with this thing is the overheat issue when recording and the camera on the 7pro beats the 8 pro

Glad the OnePlus 8 Pro now beats the 7 Pro...
After my msm full reflash I can now use stock camera without overheat issues! But I'm still cycling between the 2. After the msm restore and a new kernal I'm now as cool as my 7pro and am finally happy last report back

Question How does the phone perform thermally and performance-wise?

I've read some really mixed opinions, some say that it doesn't throttle at all (but gets quite hot during use, and I consider that a good thing, heat gets distributed from the chipset quickly).
And some say that performance falls significantly after like 10 minutes of load and games start having lag spikes after that time.
It's a hot phone. I've updated from Huawei p30 pro and I found this Xperia 1 iii runs super hot and it's basically unusable without a case, and I needed to put it against an AC vent in my car from time to time to cool it off . Never had that issue with my Huawei.
Well I already found some great tests on Tech Nick channel. It's the chipset to blame for the heat.
But compared to other phones with same chipset, Sony is one of the best performers. It even beat Asus ROG phone in terms how quickly it launchesss apps, etc. (but not in some scores, probably some throttling to blame in long-term performance, but we are comparing it to a phone that is designed specifically for gaming.)

That I agree. It's fast. And it's beautifully designed overall.
Only thing now is none of the apps refresh in background. Like my gmail. Can't for the life of me figure what's wrong. Checked every box turned on all the background refresh settings in app or in phone settings. But still no luck.
Maybe I'll wait the US version ROM and flash the phone and see if it fixes the issue.
Other then that, great phone. I just wish it chargers quicker LOL. Only 30W
They should definitely fix the refresh thing, it's a major bug. Never experienced anything like this on olders Xperias with EU rom, probably CN one to blame.
Also, does the phone get really hot when charging like previous ones? And how much does HS power control help with this if I'm using a cpu-intensive app?
(It's in the Game Enhancer that can actually be used on any other app)

Does tech nick test performance by processing video or testing fps while playing games or is he strictly one if those laughable channels that does app opening contests?
the phone gets hot, it's true.
one thing it tells us about is its heat dissipating efficiency.
as soon as it gets hot it starts getting rid of heat.
While it's not pleasant to hold a hot phone, it also means the phone is actively cooling down.

He did a video encoding test and Xperia won there. But no fps tests sadly. But I was not looking for them, because I do game eery mich on a phone, but I need to do heavy processing sometimes.

Oh, I forgot. He did FPS test on some popular games in his rewiew but no comparison. He got 60 in those games that were capped to that or solid 114 to 120 in uncapped ones.

I saw someone do fps with gendhin impact. It was hard to watch. It dropped down to 20 fps. Luckily with the game i play hours a day (call of duty) it rocked 120 fps consistently.

Maybe early firmware or it was really hot outside
I watched a video that uses specialized app to test for throttling - performance never dropped below 50% of max.
Very hot phone! When you doing nothing, it`s ok, it`s warm, but when the phone is loaded with tasks it gets seriously hot.
Think twice before buying!
I have never had any problems with heat at all. Record a lot of movies and use it often. Sure it gets warm but not more than any other device
