Questions about the new updates on Z Ultra! - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hello,
I bought a Z Ultra 2 days ago. After I activated it I have been prompted with 2 notifications: 1 that was asking me to update to the latest android and one that was asking me to update for the latest Xperia software update. First, I did the update for Android. Second, I did the update for Xperia software. My first question is: I did good by updating both - or I should've updated only the Android and not also the Xperia software? One of them changed the looks of my homescreen, the size of icons and not only, but I am not sure which one.
I am thinking of making a reset to factory settings and to do only the Android update and forget about the Xperia update. Would it be ok to do that? Which one changed the looks of my phone?
Thank you.

You have already done both, so they will stay there even if you do a factory reset. You'll only be able to revert by reflashing stock firmware.
Don't worry, updates are usually a good thing, especially on the Z Ultra.

I'm guessing you're talking about the bigger launcher icons. That's how Sony has made them now, and yes, they're bigger than before. I wouldn't downgrade an operating system just to have smaller icons on the homescreen. You can:
A. Use the older KitKat version of the launcher.
B. Use a different launcher altogether (recommend Nova and Action Launcher)
C. Change the DPI (Dots-Per-Inch), making everything denser (i.e everything will be smaller) - Root required.

with the new 5.1.1 update, you can resize the home-screen icons.
You have a choice between Small and Large. You can access this through the home settings.

Really? I thought that if I will reset to factory I will get what I had when I took the phone out of the box. Is this the usual way for all phones or is it only on Z Ultra? So it means that it is useless to reset it, because I will still have my updates?
Also, I should have done only one of the updates (latest Android update / latest Xperia Software update) or it is ok if I did both? On other words, the normal thing to do is to have both updates done, right? I ask because Xperia Software update was reconfigurating some android things so I started wondering if it good what I did - but still, the phone kept on asking me to make the Xperia update.
Second question: I did installed Buzz Launcher and I changed some themes on my Z Ultra. I decided to not use it, I deleted all data from apps for Buzz Launcher and Buzz Homepack and after that I uninstalled them. I have a feeling that my phone works slower after I had Buzz on it - is it possible? When I deleted all data from the app uninstaller in the settings and also uninstalled them, did I erase everything from this app? Should I do a factory reset?
Thank you in advance.

1. No, that's how it is on every single OS in the world. If you had reset Windows 10 on an old machine, it wouldn't magically revert back to Windows Vista or something. An OS update replaces the current OS with the newer one. If you want to get back to the older version, you'll have to do it yourself by manually flashing a firmware. It would be ridiculous to do that for some smaller homescreen icons though.
2. Yes, it's fine.
3. The app is uninstalled and gone, but there might still be a folder left on the internal storage, so install a file explorer, like Solid Explorer or something and see if there's a Buzz folder somewhere. If yes, just delete it.

[q] android update

Hi
I have the new Android update ready to install to my HTC Hero which will wipe my phone clean. I need to back up such things as bookmarks, call history, my favourite contacts, my current scene and other bits and pieces.
Please can someone advise me of the best app for this/method of doing this.
Thanks.
Titanium backup for apps, my backup pro for the rest.
I don't know, what update you have in mind, are you sure it will wipe everything ? For example official 2.1 doesnt wipe anything
Ps. BTW, I think this should be in q&a not dev
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
Moved to Q&A as not development
Yes - have system update notification for what I believe is Android 2.1. Official Three Network phone HTC Hero. Will the phone be wiped clean or will all my information, apps, bookmarks and everything remain? Also, can this be done through wireless?
If its the official update - it doesn't wipe anything.
Do you know how I can manually check for the Android update. I received an automatic messages yesterday when I switched my phone and Internet on but cancelled it as I wanted to check everything was backed up. How, I don't get the automatic message.
HTC Hero.
Thanks.
Change date forward a year
That work! Before update takes place though, won't putting the phone forward a year make the installation of the update a year in advance and not show it as present day?

No idea what you mean. But it worked, so don't complain
The 1 yr forwards is a known workaround
Before I do the update, one more question. The notification came up saying that the update was something like 72MB in size. If I have 91MB available memory, won't my phne be rather full now in memory or will it override the existing operating system and still eave me with 91MB. Being completely new to system update, I just want to make sure before I continue.
Thanks.
You're talking about a completely different memory cache.
Thanks for all your help I have now updated my phone to Android 2.1 Just a quick question. What are the differences between 1.5 and 2.1 apart from the appearance?

Planning to install Honamify on LWW request help

I am thinking of installing an alternate ROM called Honamify which is based on Android 4.4 CyanogenMod posted in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2602727
The problem is that I am totally confused after reading about the whole process. I need some guidance from experienced users/developers on how to go about this.
Here are some facts :
- The phone is Sony Ericsson Live With Walkman updated to the last official Ice Cream Sandwich build.
- It has been rooted with eRoot toolkit and most of the applications have been linked to a 2nd ext2 partition on SD card. Some applications like Facebook which were system applications have been converted to user applications and also have been linked to SD card using Link2SD. All updates to system applications have been integrated into system storage.
- The phone bootloader is currently locked.
Here are my questions :
1. Is it possible to take a complete backup of the phone in its present state so that if whatever is done later is unsuccessful it can be restored back to the present state?
2. I understand that it is necessary to unlock the bootloader before installing another ROM. But doing so may cause loss of data and DRM and other features according to Sony. And some posts mention taking a backup of TA partition before unlocking. What is that and how to do it?
3. Some tools show that the phone already has some sort of recovery installed but some others say no. Does this phone come with some factory installed recovery? If not how to install one? Clockworkmod?
4. Will it be possible to have a multiboot setup so that I can select whether to boot the stock or custom ROM?
5. Can we live without the Google applications? Or can we selectively install only some of the Google applications?

1 Yeah. If you have enabled cwm recovery option on your phone. You can just take a backup your whole phone(Of Course excluding the memory card) from the backup and restore menu and restore it later.
2 No data will go if unlock properly. Drm might go if you do it the official way. Chill just remove your sd card before unlocking and remember to backup your wahtsapp chats and sms and contacts(use google sync for contacts) You can reinstall everything again.
3 No. You have to install one. Clockworkmod, ie cwm,Once you unlocked your phone you can just flash custom kernels that come with preinstalled recovery menus
4 Its possible. But its not worth doing it on a 2011 device. Trust me . Youll have to do **** with the sd card as the system doesnt have enough space to hold more than one rom plus we dont really have dualboot kernels.
5 Go to google search and type yourzgapps and click the first link. Even 4.4 gapps are there in the download link its just not mentioned in the thread. Theyre very lite only with essential google apps. Its like only a 14mb download. And yeah you cant live without google apps especially the playstore?
Thanks yash.
How to flash a custom kernel? Using Flashtool software on Windows?
Yeah anytime.
Yes use flash tool. Drivers dont work on windows 8.1 but. So it'll be sad if youre on it

No I have Windows XP on the desktop and 7 on laptop. Both have multiple versions of PCLinuxOS. But I suppose Linux usage here would entail command line.
I suppose if I sit down and do it once I would become confident.
wait for next Honamify update
I've setup Honamify v2 on my live with Walkman. It's good, but look like it has some issue with "google play" compatibility check
For example, My phone can easy install Candy Crush Saga with brand Sony ICS Rom or LegacyXperia (the one Honamify base on).
But in Honamify v2, Google Play said my device don't support.
If you fan of Games. Think twice before install. Or you need to know how to edit buid.prop to make your device compatiblity (not easy with newbie like me)
Ok. Google Play compatibility is critical. Good to know beforehand.
What about other basic functions such as Bluetooth, WiFi, camera etc? Do they work well? Battery life?
pros: battery life, smoothness, wifi strength
It has better battery life then ICS base
Much smoothness then ICS other base Honamify ROM
The corlor in launcher is not real and beautiful like the sony ICS base.
WIFI is stronger with more access point discover in range.
Camera is OK but not much better than cybershot
Look like author has some fix, since link to part 1 has been remove.
Let's wait
for game that not pass compatibility device checking of Google play. I google apk file to download and install. It work. A bit compilicated and hard to update. But at least it ok to play.
Worth for the smooth and GUI of thís ROM.
or you can try to install my newly release rom.. as for the moments it's for LWW only but will support other mdpi's soon..just click my signature

Wiping cache and a factory re-set doesn't delete /system files, it only wipes your /data partition, which means any apps you downloaded are deleted.
What you have is one of the inexpensive clones (uses a MediaTek cpu), which sometimes use a weak launcher.
What I would do, is download a launcher from the Play Store, like Nova Launcher, and see if it will detect the rest of your apps. Nova Launcher, Apex Launcher are 2 of the most popular.
Oh, I also moved your thread to the correct forum where it will have a better chance of being answered.
Cheers!

I haven't a clue on that.
But I can advise you a nice addition for MediaTek devices. It's called Gravity Box. It's based on Xposed installer. Basically you install the exposed installer on your phone (must be rooted if I'm not mistaken) Then download Gravity Box and let the installer install it. Gives you a ton of some cool options specifically for MediaTek devices. I know, I'm using it on my own phone (Explay X-tremer) which I think has the same cpu as yours.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2316070 for android version 4.1, 4.2, and 4.3. They have a link for version 4.4 in their post.
What I can tell you about these cloned devices, it that they have a strange partition layout. I'm not sure when you did your cache wipe, if it wiped something that was installed at the factory (cache image, Dalvak Cache image). And when they got wiped, it wiped some pre-installed configuration. These clones are strange.
In the worst case, you should be able to re-flash the basic stock ROM using their software. You should check around for some korean sites that have a forum/users for your specific phone. Unfortunately, XDA doesn't offer much support for clones.
I also use another app called Gravity Screen (allows automatic display on/off using the sensor) saves a little battery life.

Here's what I used;
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2130276
Basically you do 2 things.
1) Set your USB Debug on (Settings/Developer Options)
2) In Settings/Security set Unknown Sources
Then copy the newest apk from the link above. And put it in your device somewhere (Internal SD card for example). Using your file manager (or get ES File Explorer from the Play Store) select the apk and let it install to your phone. Then start the app, and I believe for MTK devices you would select either Boromir or Faramir exploit.
Should probably work for you. Takes a couple of minutes and a re-boot. The good thing, is that if none of the exploits work, you don't damage the phone, and simply uninstall the app.
As for an updated ROM, you must wait for whomever made your device to give you a newer version. DO NOT install any other ROM, unless it is made specifically for your device. And you have a clone, so that may not happen.

Help me return to stock!

Loki,
Sorry to bother you with this, I feel like I must be missing something obvious.
Device: 1900 1/8 TrueSmart
ROM/Firmware version: EnSec20140318
Baseband: MOLY.WR8.W135.MD.WG.MP.V4.P1 ,2013/11/09 14:19
Changes made to stock firmware (if any): Installed EnSec20140318, then installed Operative 2014031 and then attempted to change back EnSec20140318 all using your java script.
What OS is on your PC if your PC was used: Windows 7
Issue: Still booting to Operative boot screen with Win8 launcher / Smart Launcher after loading EnSec20140318
Steps Taken: When booted to TWRP did a full wipe and tried again. ROM is showing EnSec20140318, but it still looks/acts like Operative 2014031.
As awesome as Operative 2014031 is, I am finding out that I am more of a stock ROM kinda guy. I originally loaded EnSec20140318 for a day and played with it. Then I loaded Operative 2014031 and had no issues. After two days I decided I would like to go back to stock at least for now. Everything seemed to work fine when I tried to switch, but even though I see EnSec20140318 listed as the ROM, I am still seeing the Operative 2014031 boot screen and launcher options. I tried a second time and did a full wipe at the TWRP menu and am having the same issues.
I would be grateful if you could help be get back to the "stock" launcher. Thanks again for your contributions to the TS community!
OUI v1 is nothing more than the stock Android launcher with a 2x2 grid and the dock hidden.
OUI v2 is yet another modified launcher.
You would be much better served by picking a decent launcher and hiding the dock and setting it to a 2x2 grid. Another option is to go to that "Removed" folder that the patch created and installing OUI2 which is in Removed/system/app
The option that directly relates to what you are asking requires you flash stock firmware then run the patch again and choose EnSec this time. I personally do not recommend EnSec over Operative due to the over 150MB of junk left in that also eats up RAM and battery. For example, Facebook runs in the background at all times even if you never use it and eats up around 60MB of RAM for no reason.
I was thinking of going back to stock as well because I plan to only use it as a companion.
Come to find out the companion app won't run on Operative.
Any other options I'm missing besides these two:
Go back to stock and have bloat + companion app.
Stay on Operative and not have companion.
Thanks
@vikemosabe
The companion app runs on TrueSmart Operative 20140318. I'm running it right now. The only issue I've found is the known issue with BT but that affects stock as well. The companion app will however not run on x201 EnSec or x201 Operative.

http://www.emui.com/nsp/geturl.php?path=7D-501u_EMUI3.0_Android4.4_V100R002C208B009.zip&rid=962
i have read in the chinese forums that this version is supposed to be the one that can retain user data when upgrading from EMUI 2.3, however problems seem to exist after flashing (dark screen when camera is launched, the pull down notification menu stopping midway etc) and Huawei ended up suggesting wiping system / user data to solve them, kinda defeats the purpose. anyway, ymmv.
BTW, does anyone know how to get rid of the update prompt? It keeps nagging me to update.
In going from R001C233B021 to R002C208B009 on the 7D-501u with the OTA update, will it change the dpi from 320 to 400? If so, I'm not upgrading.

you can manually change at will the dpi after updating, by modifiyng buildprop if rooted. Or with adb commands if non rooted.
Check for (or open up yourself) a devoted DPI change thread of this forum, if you want to know more about it.

As far as I can tell from the other threads, changing the dpi to 320 breaks other stuff. Also some of my apps won't
work with root or with root cloak. There's no way I'm doing an upgrade that I know will break stuff rather than fix stuff, just for a slightly newer version of Android. My battery icon is already white anyway.

It Is same android version like 320 dpi kitkat!
I am in China but checking for updates tells me there is no update (I'm on 2.2). So perhaps this is still not the build intended for general release.
OK, it is now showing as available as an OTA today BUT trying to download it always ends in failure. Perhaps loads of other people are trying to download it at the same time....
Just download it from the EMUI page.
I waited for the OTA, hoping that it would not wipe the device (unlike the emui page download version?).
After taking 8 hours to download, it finally tells me it will wipe my personal data. What kind of stupid upgrade is this? No other brand of Android phone I have ever owned has wiped data on upgrading from one version to another. Very disappointing. Huawei, you must do better than this if you expect people to buy your phones more than once.
It did not wipe mine.
I just installed it, and wished I hadn't. ALL paid for apps were wiped. Other apps were also deleted. I can no longer connect to Google services (Play store, Gmail, etc). What a pile of rubbish. An OTA update shouldn't do this kind of thing. This is my first, and last, Huawei phone. Nice hardware, shame about the software.
