Hi all

rom or root issue? unexpected behaviour detected -
flash different rom and try again.
ERROR: run rumrunner again rumrunner....
Thanks
I get the same thing and was hoping for a fix or way to downgrade the os.
Just use Sunshine from http://theroot.ninja/ The program costs $25, but it just friggin works. It was the easiest thing to do for me and got me unlocked, S off and I was able to root very easily.

Hello everyone, I'm kinda stuck in a bind. I got a warranty replacement phone from HTC that turned up not to be goot (screen is yellow). They sent me a different one but it took a while. In the mean time I unlocked the bootloader and rooted the device and now I'm trying to return it to stock and get rid of the "relocked" and "tampered" flags but I'm having trouble doing so. I was able to do this with my original phone before I sent it by following these instructions http://www.htc1guru.com/guides/return-stock-guide/, but for some reason I'm no longer able to do that. I basically used revone to reset the flags, and flashed the latest RUU available and boom, I was back to stock. The only thing I can think of that's different with this device is that it's running hboot 1.56, and my old one wasn't.
I can't even flash an RUU right now, I keep getting "too many links" or "unable to read android_info" errors.
I'm currently htcdev unlocked, rooted, but have been unable to obtain S-OFF, I've tried rumrunner and firewater but neither will work. Rumrunner runs 8 times, and it fails, and firewater does nothing after following the directions, I get no disclaimers or anything. I know if I get S-OFF this might be easier, but I've just been unable to do so. Please help.
Please let me know what more info you need and I'll post it. Thanks in advance.
SOLVED: Never mind everyone, I solved it. I was able to get S-OFF using firewater by using ./firewater, instead of /data/local/tmp/firewater to run the script in the last step of their instructions. Thanks anyways.
I have an HTC One Max from Verizon, stock, unrooted, odex, running HBOOT 2.49.0000
I am trying to attempt to unlock the bootloader so i can S-OFF
When i use HTC's DEV site, and submit my token, it tells me that my MID is not allowed.
When i use rumrunner i get this error (see atttached image)
I have tried may things posted on XDA and utube with no success.
if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.
Use Firewater and download it using internet explorer. I just got S-OFF on my VZW device 2.49 HBOOT

Ok again this is an HTC one max and I am trying to unlock the boot loader. I can't s-off until I unlock the boot loader first. If you have an HTC one max (not the HTC one m7 or m8), then tell me how you managed to unlock the bootloader.
You cant unlock the bootloader at HTCdev with this devicebecause of carrier regulations so you use firewater to do that. It unlocks your bootloader and gives you s-off
I need to change my sig to show the One Max lol
Also from doing some reading rumrunner isnt effective on HBOOTs after 2.46 or so

Ok once again, this is an HTC one max (not the HTC one m7 or m8) and it's Verizon I am referring to - not sprint or AT&T - and I am trying to unlock the bootloader. I can't s-off until I unlock the bootloader first. If you have an HTC one max (not the HTC one m7 or m8), and it's specifically a Verizon carrier, then tell me how you managed to unlock the bootloader.

Sorry stupid Firefox entered the same thread twice. I will again attempt to use Firewater, but it didn't work for me the last attempt I made. Thanks for the advice and I will follow up.
I have a verizon one max HBOOT 2.49 unlocked bootloader by using Firewater http://firewater-soff.com/
After you read what it is for on the homepage click on the Instructions/Download Tab and of the 3 methods given, use the "Instructions (WeakSauce method - some m8 models and maybe others)" method.
Basically you need to download the app called Weaksauce it is in the steps for the method above and at the link -->http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2699089
When you install the app, it will give you root. install SuperSu from the market and begin the process of Firewater.
Note:
1. When you boot your device make sure weaksauce roots your device before you being to use firewater (you can download the Root Checker app from the market to verify that you have root before you start)
2. Download firewater using Internet Explorer
3. Follow the instructions carefully from both weaksauce and firewater
good luck

Question, now that i have successfully unlocked the device and achieved s-off, and also have installed a current of version of twrp and rooted, does installing future OTA updates affect any of this? would installing an OTA update cause me to have to re-root? or possibly lose my "unlocked, s-off"?
Thanks,

You will need to have the stock recovery in order to take an OTA. In my case for Kit Kat OTA, I was unlocked rooted and S-OFF and still got the update. You will probably lose root but unlock and S-OFF will remain.

So you are saying that if i updated my recovery to TWRP, i would not be able to install the OTA update? Also, did you lose root when you applied the update? and if so, how did you regain root?
If twrp senses that you do not have root it will give you an option to slide to root

ok that answers the last parts of my question, but what about the first? if I am running a custom recovery (TWRP), I will be unable to install OTA updates?

That is correct, you need the stock recovery and stock rom, you can be rooted and will lose it, but S-OFF will remain. Root is easy to get back so it's no big deal
I just delt with this exact problem. U won't be able to get any while rooted. I ended up having to install the RUU via fastboot and lock my bootloader in order to get Ota updates. I still consider myself to be a noob. I think you gotta have the stock recovery installed as well.

Hello all,
I followed the instructions here for rooting and s-off.
I installed the recovery and kernel.
When i got to rum runner it would not s-off. It kept saying download correct version. I tried different computers and suggestions on different threads with no luck to s-off.
At this point the phone would not get past the boot screen with the stock ROM. I installed viper rom and it would load but kept saying everything HTC stop unexpectedly over and over so the phone is not usable. I tried another rom that would load but says Sense stopped then reboots after 90 seconds or so.
Any ideas to finish s-off and root or just restore to stock??
I have experience with rooting many other phones and never had a problem.
Thanks for any help.

Rum runner only works on older firmware. You'll need to pay 25 bucks and use sunshine to s-off

I've started down the path of getting S-OFF on my M8. I have unlocked the bootloader and rooted the phone. I then started to get S-OFF and got as far as installing InsertCoin, which worked fine. I then attempted to install FireWater, but quickly found that won't work any more so I need to use Sunshine. OK, fine with that but Sunshine will not run, giving an error message that it cannot be run on a device that is debugable. I read in another post that someone got this working by installing a new bootloader. I did try this and even tried many different bootloaders but nothing worked. I have the device back booting into Android with InsertCoin installed.
So my question is what do I need to do to get the device into a state where Sunshine will work? Or, how can I revert the InsertCoin install??
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Stock ROM and stock recovery are best for sunshine, from what I've read.

Thanks. I found stock roms on the HTC website and was able to get the device back into it's factory state.
I figured since the Max is not getting Lollipop, I might as well finally get around to rooting it so I can tweak it a bit, and maybe put a 5.1 rom on it later. I know the devices bootloader cannot be unlocked using the HTC tool. I tried unlocking and rooting the phone using Rumrunner, but that also failed. I got an odd error stating that the device was not rooted and was running an unsecure kernel. I have tried Googling the question and just came up with Rumrunner. Is there a way to do this? Thanks!

You can use sunshine to unlock boot loader, s-off and root. Cost $25 though. Only way.

I'm also looking to do the same thing (upgrade my OS for security reasons mostly). It seems CM is the most supported ROM for the MAX, what's the steps? Sunshine to unlock bootloader, s-OFF, and root? Then install safestrap or whatever ROM manager is needed? Then flash CM to a open slot?
Thanks everybody. I actually installed an app called Weaksauce2 that I read about on this forum. It apparently roots the device at each boot up. Afterwards, I then had the idea to run Rumrunner again. It actually finished without an error, but I am not sure if it did what it was supposed to do! Before I ran Rumrunner again, the device would hang up and restart when I went into the Play Store. It seems to be working now, but you cannot update the Supersu binary.

You gotta boot into recovery. You can usually do that by telling it to restart and holding volume down. Then you can see if you have s-OFF and unlocked and all that jazz. You need it to be unlocked to install ROMs

Thanks! Will take a look when I get home.
It is still locked and s-on. :crying: I guess I will leave it as it is. It is not worth it to me to spend any money on it right now, so I will skip Sunshine.

No. That is for the Sprint version of the phone. Mine is Verizon and that unlock utility does not work. I have it rooted using Weaksauce2 and it is doing OK! Not bad for a temp root solution!
The only way I found to perma root was to use Sunshine. Yeah I know it costs $25, but it works and you can unlock bootloader and S-off the phone too.
If anyone is around York, pa I have a java card which will s-off any version of this phone. Well any htc phone for that matter.
