But I'm a bit (really) confused about a lot of things regarding this process. I've been reading for a week now and barely getting anywhere.
So first, a little history.
I'm running a stock vibrant, Froyo.UVKB5, 2.6.32.9 kernel, never been rooted.
Now, one of the main reasons for my upgrade is the loss of wifi connectivity. For some reason I can no longer connect to most ISP's or WIFI hotspots, especially my own.
Now, here's the kicker; I don't have a data package on my service so I am dependent on wifi only. Now that I can't get wifi, I'm not sure if I can get all the files I need to do this upgrade. I'm hoping this upgrade will reconnect me to wifi.
Reading through the Wiki for rooting (http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-T959), it says I am to use Superuser AND binary, is this correct?
I've found a boatload of Superuser files one the ClockworkMod ROM Manager website, ... which one do I use, there's no explanation?
And I understand I need to install SuperSU AFTER I have it rooted.?.
Regarding an updated OS, from the questions and remarks on this post (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900763), I need both a kernel AND a rom? But other threads I've read say the kernel is in the ROM. Does this mean that CyanogenMod's CM7.2.0 is kernel only and doesn't get you anywhere?
Also from this thread, suggestions were made to upgrade to one kernel, then a rom, then to another kernel and rom, and finally to the kernel and rom the user wants. Why is this necessary?
I have many more questions but they branch off depending on answers to these fundamental questions here.
So, if there's anyone with enough patience and willing to hold my hand through this process, I would greatly appreciate it.
And I need to go cancel my monthly paid warranty fee on this old phone too.
ROMs typically include a kernel in their update zip. CyanogenMod is a ROM and as such includes our own kernel when you install it. Be aware of the 911 issues before upgrading your os to a custom rom.

To install Clockworkmod, if you are using Android 2.2 Froyo, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833423
Run the "3e_recovery_installer" from your computer with the phone connected and USB debugging mode enabled. Then boot into stock recovery (Hold VOL+ and VOL- and POWER with the phone off, release when you see the logo) and flash the "update.zip" twice. It will boot into a green CWM that temporarily exist until you turn off the phone, beware that this temp CWM only let you flash zips from your Vibrant internal storage, it will not recognize your microSD.
Note: If you are using Eclair 2.1, you should be able flash the update.zip directly without the "3e recovery installer".
You can either flash root from CWM, or download a rom like SlimBean and flash it directly. When you flash a custom rom, it will install a newer version of CWM first (because the older version of CWM will not be able to flash the rom) and the phone will reboot. Take off the battery and put it back, boot into recovery again to see the new version of CWM, then you can install the custom rom again fully this time. Generally you should do a "wipe data and cache" before installing a rom, but sometimes, you might also need to go to "mount and storage" and format the /system folder before you can flash a new rom successfully. This can help avoid system files from your old Android installation to exist and merge with the new rom installation. However, the /system folder is where most of the OS important files are locate so without it the phone won't boot, so you need to have a custom rom in the phone (or microSD) to flash after you format it.
That should pretty much cover most of it. If you ever run into problems you can always use ODIN to recover the phone to factory stock. In fact, if you want to stay with stock and just want your WiFi to get fixed, its probably better to simply do an ODIN recovery (or a factory reset) first, before looking at custom roms.

THIS IS ONE QUICK/SIMPLE ERROR FREE ROM FLASHING PROCEDURE
This should eliminate a few posts saying, stuck in download mode, stuck at logo. just vibrates and them MANY other issues that somehow, everyone seems to find.
Here is my quick rom flashing process I use ALWAYS (yes always)
THINGS YOU NEED ON extSDCARD
1. Extra kernels (2 or 3 you know works for your device)
2. Optional: 2 recoveries that can be flashed (I use CWM & TWRP)
3. Optional: apps.zip (a zip created from Titantium BU, containing Root Explorer, TU Backup, Quickpic, ES File Explorer and Terminal Emulator)
Flashing the rom: TOUCHWIZ/AOSP ROMS
1. Backup current rom (to the extsdcard)
2. Complete wipe, (I do complete, some people do not) Complete = No Issues [FACTORY RESET + CLEAR CACHE + CLEAR DALVIK CACHE + CLEAR DATA]
3. Flash the rom
4. Flash the kernel (your device kernel) (I know some roms have their own kernel) this is where your problems start.
AGAIN: FLASH YOUR KERNEL, you KNOW it works. 1 more time FLASH YOUR KERNEL. (you can experiment with other kernels after you boot)
AOSP ROMS - require you to flash gapps before you boot. [This is not required for TouchWiz roms]
5. Boot the rom.
FINISHED!!!! SUCCESS!!!
Total time to flash a rom:
7-10min
Errors - NONE
This goes for every rom in my guide.
TIPS:
This flash procedure is for Touchwiz Roms, if you are flashing AOSP roms, you must flash the gapps package associated with the rom you are flashing.
**** SGH-I337M Users: Often requires flashing a different kernel than the one included in most ATT ROMS. Any GT-i9505 kernel will work and Adam kernel and Faux kernel are both confirmed working for us Canadian users.
Note: Flash KERNEL directly after ROM then reboot device.

The extra recovery I flash if a rom does not like the recovery I am using.
Yes, you can flash recoveries back and forth.
Apps.zip I flash after the rom is up & running. This I use to get the rom setup (like root explorer and others needed)

I've been running into a lot of issues when trying to flash different ROMs. For instance, right now I'm on CleanROM 1.6 - I just tried to install PureGv2.
Steps I took:
Have Goo and ROM Manager installed after clean install of CleanROM 1.6
Flash CWM from ROM Manager
Install Recovery Script from Goo
Reboot into recover from Goo
TWRP loads
Wipe data, cache, dalvik, etc
Install PureGv2
I forget the error off the top of my head but it doesn't install
In a nutshell I'm asking what am I doing wrong? Do I need to flash another kernel?
Flash your verizon kernel. Correct. I know it is a vzn rom, but do it anyway.

Was looking through Tomsgt's Youtube channel and stumbled across a video of his that showed his "About Phone". Everything was identical to mine, so I'm still a little lost as to why I can flash certain ROMs but not others. Sac/Gru's ROM soft bricked my phone, Hyperdrive5.7 didn't install, CleanROM does. It's just funky...maybe I'll just Odin back to stock, flash the MDK and start fresh.
Could the downloads be a problem? I downloaded 2 of the ROMs from work today on a 50meg pipe and they didn't work.
Do you download the ROMs to your phone or to your computer and then move them to your SD card?
If you download to your phone, do you move them to the SD card or leave them in the download folder on the internal storage?
If you do the latter, do you use a micro SD adapter or plug the phone in and move them that way?

Download to the computer,then copy to the phones extsdcard, should be ok, make sure you do a md5 check on the files to make sure they are the correct size.

Now I'm running Cleanrom 1.5. If I wanted to install a new rom can someone please explain exactly what I do to go about it? As jargon free as possible would be awesome.

I certainly scared the carp outta me the other night. I'm using the Carbon ROM and while I do like it, I miss a couple of the S4s features. I picked what looked like a good modified stock ROM and proceeded to flash it.
I'm using Goo and TWRP for the job. I checked of all 3 boxes for clearing cache, davik and factory reset.
Then I chose the file and started it.
The first result, it acted like if was doing everything but nothing changed. Phone still worked fine.
On the next try, I waited for TWERP to start and I reselected the ROM I wanted and flashed it.
When it booted up, I was very happy to see the original screens come up. Then it stopped on the one with the Verizon check mark. The blue LED slowly pulsing and nothing else for about 30 min. I removed battery to try and start over. Same thing again.
Time to goto my backup and restore my phone back to Carbon.
IT FAILED.
Now my phone is stuck in a weird looking boot up loop. After a few tries I was able to get into recovery
mode. TWRP started loading, froze and crashed! Even though I am a total noob at this, I still did not panic.
I'd restart my phone by removing the battery, going into recovery mode and then wildly press every button on my phone hoping to break the loop. It worked! I chose a different save and tried it all over again. FAIL.
ON the next I wiped every bit of old data off. Chose Factory restore crossed my fiingers....it work! My phone is fine now.
Thanks to that ordeal and this thread I think I know what I did wrong even though this never happened to me. before.
1) WIPE THE DATA
2)INSTALL A COMPATABLE KERNAL FIRST

So, if you just need to add something, like different Kernerl, do you have to wipe and start from scratch?
Should you.
If so, and you backup apps and data in Titanium, then what you do a full wipe, flash entire rom, and reinstall the apps and data associated therewith?
Last, I have asked this but cannot seem to get an answer.
Installed Hyperdrive 7 (also had 5.7 and 6). Rom is super smooth and fast, working like a charm. but I want Verizon Visual Voice Mail.
I tried to copy the apk file to the devices system/app directory but get permission denied message....tried to install, and get failed message....

did you set the permissions for the app? That should work actually. Look at one of the apps in that directory, and set the permissions the same for the voice app. Reboot and see what happens.

Please bring the question over to my thread up above. It shows also what kernels to use. We will help there.
Another noob question: so you still advise flashing a kernel even if the ROM creator says that the ROM comes with the appropriate kernel and that no extra flashing is required? I've got the Verizon Galaxy S4 variant and specifically am thinking of Dubbsy's Google Play Edition ROM.

You would flash the rom, and after, flash your verizon kernel, simple as that.
Hello Everyone,
Ok so not sure where to start, umm yesterday i decided to root my phone i have the HTC Desire C from Cricket wireless. I was successful at unlocking my bootloader and rooting the device. Now for some reason im unable to flash a custom rom or whatever to my device, not sure if im doing something wrong, but i must have screwed something up because i cant even perform a factory reset or a hard reset to the device at all, and the google play store no longer works and the sync icon never goes away. Now when i attempt to flash the custom rom the clockwork recovery tool wont allow me to do a full wipe which i believe must be completed before you can even install the roms.
any help or suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Just unlocking and rooting the device should not affect how the Play Store works at all. That seems odd. What's the error? By the Clockwork recovery tool, are you referring to the Rom Manager or the actual ClockWorkMod recovery?

Actually you know what, I think i know what happened. when i was trying to flash the rom i also flashed the gapps for jelly bean into my phone which is running ice cream sandwich currently because the rom flashing failed. So basically i think the gapps apps are conflicting with the stock apps on the phone ? It seems like all the google apps are the only ones messing up and the google account sync is messing up also the google playstore and google plus crashes a lot so its only the google apps. so what do you think and how do i restore the phone ? I didnt make a back up recovery either. If someone could also just walk me through how to flash a custom rom like CyanogenMod i believe everything will probably fix its self (hopefully). oh and as for the Clockworkmod i think its the actual clockworkmod recovery the one with a black hat, i accessed it through bootloader recovery options, anyway it doesnt allow me to flash any custom roms ive tried like 3 so far and everytime it ask me for some update file or something about a update not sure.
Yep, the other Google apps is what did it. You don't need to flash Gapps on a stock rom, only for ones like CM that don't come pre-installed. Well, first off, it's good to take note of what system version and baseband version you have, in case you need to find the files for later to reflash. As far as CM, well, you might want to check on how stable a version is for your phone. Often times less popular HTC CDMA phones don't have as good of support from CM. If you just find another stock rom and install it through CWM, you'll probably be fine. Just make sure to wipe everything suggested in the install guide for the rom you pick. Some devs and roms require a full wipe including /system and some do not. ProTip : Do a backup in CWM before ever wiping /system, even your system now which doesn't work right, because if you wipe the system and the rom you downloaded doesn't work, then you will be stuck with nothing to do and at that point would need to find the RUU from HTC to restore the phone back to stock.
FYI: If you unlocked via htcdev.com, this is not a full unlock and whenever you install a custom rom that has a different kernel than what is already on the phone, then you need to extract the boot.img from the rom.zip and install it via fastboot. You should get familiar with fastboot as it is very handy for reviving the phone in a worst case scenario.

Ok Thanks for the reply, now as for the full wipe my CWM wont allow me to do this im only allowed to do a cache wipe and I believe this is why im unable to get a Rom working on my phone and this is getting very frustrating, the CWM is the latest version and TWRT wont even flash to my phone so that one doesnt work at all if you know of any others please let me know. Yesterday morning i soft bricked my phone and none of the roms are working because i believe i must perform a full wipe which i am unable to do at this time. oh and about unlocking my bootloader via htcdev.com and it not being a full unlock, do you suggest that may have something to do with the fact roms wont work on my phone and how do you do a full unlock ? oh and i tried to restore back to stock also thats not working either, I get a status 7 error when installing the roms and sometimes a status 6.

Are you sure you don't have the recovery from another version of the Desire C - GSM maybe? I still don't understand what you mean when you say you can factory reset. Why not? What is the error? And sounds like at this point you should just use the RUU to return to full stock and start over.

Ok not sure what the RUU is and how im suppose to use it to return to full stock, and correct i cant perform a factory reset in bootloader period, when i select factory reset it does nothing but reboot and say HTC "this build is for development purposes only do not distribute outside of htc without written permission. Failure to comply may lead to legal action." then it stays like that and nothing else happens period, not sure what im doing wrong but no worries im going to buy a new phone tomorrow and never use custom roms again, if i want a upgrade ill just go out and buy a new phone which i should have done in the first place, only thing ill be doing is rooting my devices for now on and nothing more thank you for your help.
Well, once you have a custom recovery, you don't factory reset from the bootloader screen, but via the recovery itself. That's one of the main reasons for the recovery - better options to wipe the phone as well as backing up, restoring, and flashing the custom stuff. Not saying you shouldn't buy another phone, but no reason to give up on this one. I just think it would require a bit more reading since you don't see very familiar with what to do with CWM after you installed it. Have you even booted INTO CWM?

I saw a custom TouchWiz Galaxy S5 4.4 KitKat ROM thread and I immediately wanted to download it, but Im afraid in case I dont like it, I will have no way to get back to my old OS, so the question I want to ask is: Is there any kind of full system backup without root, or if not, is there a way to root it, backup, install the rom, and if I dont like it, reinstall the default one and unroot so I dont void warranty? Thanks.

You'll be able to go back.
I recommend backing up all your contacts, call logs, texts, apps, etc with a backup app like Go Backup, or something similar, then making sure that folder and your internal storage is copied to a PC or somewhere safe. Then you put the rom on your phone, install a custom recovery via Odin, reboot directly to recovery before it reboots to the OS (otherwise the stock system will replace the recovery with the original one and you'll have to do it again) and do a full backup of the OS and data (called a nandroid backup), then follow the install directions for the rom provided by the developer. Typically it's factory reset then install, but in some cases you will need to also wipe the system. Check the thread to see if they recommend using a different modem as many updates need the right one to make sure you have the best connection, GPS, etc.

Sorry but I lost you when you talked about installing a custom recovery via Odin and until you talked about a nandroid backup. I've installed custom ROMs on my old Galaxy Gio so Im fairly familiar with how to installing ROMs and rooting, what I dont understand is:

How to boot into that blue and black menu (In gio it was sleep+home buttons, and in this one i dont know)

I remember vaguely that I rooted it with some zip, installed cwm recovery but before that, i only backuped SMS, CONTACTS, CALL LOGS AND APPS, not the system, thus dictating that if I wanted to go back i needed a custom rom to install. I didnt make a backup copy of the system, just the ones I said above. In this one I want to make a complete backup, preferably before I rooted it so I could go back without voiding warranty. Can't back up the whole system without a custom recovery. Only the stuff you previously mentioned and some other stuff like wifi/BT connections, wallpapers, ringtones, etc.
As far as recovery, it is accessed via Home+Vol Up+Power and Download Mode is accessed by Home+Volume Down+Power.

Ok so, then I have to root it, install cwm and download the rom and install in cwm.
Suggestions on where to find the root zip file and app to backup the whole system after I root it?
If you dont mind or can help with it, a step by step on how to root it, back everything up and preparing for install would be much appreciated as im rusty from messing around with that stuff

You don't need to root to perform a nandroid backup, just have to install a custom recovery via Odin and boot to it before the system reboots as it will overwrite the custom recovery. But I already gave you a link with all the info you'll need to root, recovery, and custom rom your phone. And as I mentioned, you need to look at the Stickies in the section for your phone here on xda. I don't like to help those that don't want to help themselves first.
tl;dr - Can't seem to find my way out of a software brick. Have sideloaded the stock OS from 1+ but still forever getting the spinning dots or fastboot screen, depending on which mode i boot into.
Hi all. Signed up to make this thread, but i've been lurking for years.
I have a OnePlus X that is about the least modded smartphone i've ever owned. I've never been pleased enough with a retail product that i didn't feel compelled to strip out the bloat and start over, until this phone. Other than stock, i've just got a gallery app, some apps for manipulating text files or compiling code, couple games, and social media apps.
Anyway, a few days ago i got a notification about a software update. Downloaded. Installed. Updated. No problem.
Maybe yesterday or the day before, it showed up again. This morning i downloaded, installed, and suddenly i have apps closing. It's been over 12 hours so i'm hazy on how it all started, but i was getting something like "package installer" errors when attempting to open some apps. Same deal when i went to adjust permissions of those affected apps. Every time i unfocused a box that had pulled up swype, i would get an error message saying swype crashed or closed or something.
So i started uninstalling third party apps (i don't keep many, and most i've had for years so i think they're probably trustworthy). Same deal. Started uninstalling updates to google apps. Same deal. Went to uninstall and reinstall some non stock apps that i'd kept previously. Nothing.
I went to cook breakfast while an app was reinstalling, and i came back to a red dot on my screen with two white dots chasing each other around it. From what i'm reading that's a sign of a bootloop or software brick. I've taken all steps i could find, including wiping cache and sideloading a fresh stock OS, but to no avail.
Is it that i've ruined my google apps somehow and need to restore them? How would i even go about figuring out what the problem is? Any advice or guidance is appreciated

As your device is in bootloop state, try flashing the stock rom. Make sure you wipe data and cache. As far as after update problems, i faced it few times. After updating many app crashed and phone hangs. So i prefer clean flash over dirty flashing, to make sure everything is hazel free. For the time being i upgraded from 3.1.2 to 3.1.3 without wiping data or cache and facing no problem( of course since it was an OTA). But sometimes situation comes when after update phone act weird, so tbe option which i prefer then is clean flashing the stock rom. Hope this helps.

I have wiped cache, deleted data, tried a factory reset in the stock bootloader, and i have used ADB to sideload a full stock rom (not upgrade package) that i downloaded from OnePlus.
Flash old stock recovery then 2.2.3. From there you can flash any MM stock firmware.

Pardon me for being nooby, but how do i do this? Do i just sideload in ADB like i did the ROM? Most instructions i'm finding assume access to the OS either normally or through fastboot. I'm just stuck in the default recovery.
Thanks for the tip, though. Looking for a copy of the old stock recovery now. Did OnePlus alter their stock recovery recently? In some threads i've seen people say that a recent update made them unable to load a non-stock ROM. Is that the new recovery blocking access to non-1+ operating systems?

Fastboot flash easiest way. Make sure it's the old recovery from 2.2.2. Not the new mm stock recovery.
Yes, but how do i install the old stock recovery? I dug around on the forums and found the file, but the phone rejects it when sideloading and doesn't show the .img in the filesystem when inserted on a SD card.
Have to send it off to 1+ maybe? Literally all i can access right now is the (new) stock recovery. I never modded, rooted, etc before the software update sent me into the chasing dots

I m not a dev, i m a newbie like you. i hv done a lot of experiments with my oneplus-x, as for u the first update u got few days back should be oos 3.1.2 and the one u got 2 days before should be 3.1.3. When u upgrade from lollipop to marshmellow, even your stock recovery got upgraded to latest version, which is something different from old lollipop recovery.
You said you have access to recovery mode. thts pretty much gud, what u can do is that wipe data and cache through stock recovery and do a clean install of oos 3.1.3. I ll be providing all the necessary links down below. If you need assistance with fastboot cmds and anything feel free to ask.

Don't sideload it, use fastboot to flash it. "Fastboot flash recovery name.img" - without he quotes and the image name.
Sorry for vanishing. Had a busy week.
Not sure what happened the first time i tried to put the 2.2.3 image on the SD card, because the file didn't show up in my recovery, but i tried again later (after giving up on flashing the old recovery, since i couldn't figure out how to do that in recovery) and managed to do a clean install of the older OOS version.
That did the trick, and after booting up, my phone proceeded to update again - this time without any crashes or errors with my apps afterward. The phone still does the red dot with the white dots chasing around it when it boots up, which must be the new boot screen. It also seems to stay on that screen for much longer than it stayed on the old morphing shape boot screen, but it still boots up reliably now after 30-60 seconds rather than freezing in boot forever.
I've since enabled dev mode on my phone. Is that going to be enough to enable ADB commands from recovery? I kind of like that i've kept my phone stock, so i'll leave it that way if i can, but it would have been much easier to fix this problem if i'd had access to most of my debug commands. As it was, without dev mode and in the standard recovery, it seemed that sideload was the only command i was able to use, and only when the phone was requesting a sideload over usb
