Google maps navigation question - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So, fresh out of ios for the last few years I really got use to Google maps having banner notifications while in a different app and navigating.
It seems this is missing on the Android app. It must be doable because I get banner notifications for my phone and music apps.
Curious if anyone has any insight on why this great feature is missing, and if there's any word on it possibly being added.

Anyone have any info at all? Even a Google request page where this is being discussed would be cool. I can't find a thing about on the Web, an it seems like a significant thing to be missing.

They don't do the banner notifications in Android because it's in the notification drawer. Just have to swipe the status bar down to see it.

Hmmmm.... I will give that a shot, but they do banner notification for a couple apps. Phone comes to mind immediately.
Pulling down the drawer is a huge distraction, as is muting the navi voice when a call comes in.

I feel that a banner over my other apps would be more distracting. Different strokes for different folks and all that.

I don't see how on earth directions a person is relying on being hidden is less distracting than being visible. But ya.... Different strokes I suppose.
Given the fact it's on ios and not Googles own OS makes me wonder. I mean, ios is known for having more polished apps, and also known for having better Google Apps in some cases.

Because when I use Maps, it's connected to Bluetooth in my car, thus having no need to see directions. It also tells me where to go via voice controls. If you need to see the directions, why would you be in another app anyway? I sometimes pop into the directions to see a head of time if I'm at a stoplight or something, but just have to double click on the lockscreen notification or the notification drawer and good to go.

To add insult to injury, Google maps will flash a banner notification telling me the route is 'clear', or 'being rerouted'. So..... It seems very very possible to throw in the upcoming turn banner notifications as well.
And for those who use an ear piece, or no blue tooth at all an auto mute function would be so nice.
I just don't understand the lack of these features or the lack of people who find their absence not inconvenient at the least. *sigh *

[BRAINSTORM] Texting in the Notification bar.

I just had an idea. Instead of texting by switching applications, what if you could just pull down the notification window, type a message and read it. If it worked with Google Voice, that would be very cool too!
I have no idea how to code this, but I am a designer and could create some pretty GUI for it.
You could try something like SMSPopup or the popup+quick compose shortcut that handcent has
Do you mean compose an entirely new message in the notification bar or reply to one you received?

I like his idea, I wouldn't mind seeing something official or official looking that popped up when long pressing an SMS notification that let you select reply, that kept you in your current app but popped up for replying like QuickDesk or SMS Popup does.

Maybe, but if you could send texts from the notification bar, next thing is someone else would want to send emails, someone else would want to make voice calls, someone else order pizzas and the next thing you know the purpose of the notification bar is lost in a jumble of features ... what's so difficult about pressing the sms icon to send a text?
Kind of pointless seeing how as you're one click and several milliseconds away from the full fledged SMS app. Remember, this isn't an iPhone, stuff works here - fast.
The notification bar is just that, a notification bar.

True. But I don't see why notifications can't have long-press options. The problem is, this would sorta have to be on a per-app basis. Meaning nobody would make an app that included a menu for the notification unless it was an official feature from Google, a part of Android 2.5, for example.

I was thinking that it would be a good idea to create something like what the OP wants, but I really like your response and you make a good point.
My two cense [yeah im UK so cant spell that word xD]
1) Popup SMS, I installed it very early on in my N1 career, never uninstalled it, its perfect for me.
2) While we dont NEED this, it would be interesting to see if its possible to type in the notification bar, as there may be other uses.
this gives me an idea too
i always hate going back to home or clicking music playing notification to change music.
If there was a little previous, play/pause and next icon it would be awesome. As the status bar is nearly always visible we never have to exit the current app we're in.
Hopefully someone can do this
but yeah sms would be cool too
A stinky note / drawing pad would be cool too. Just a way to quickly write a note, be it a phone number or grocery list, and view it anywhere without minimizing the current application.
Even though there are dedicated apps for all of this, the ease of use and speed of the notification bar are noticeable. The Framework is always running in the foreground.

Google Maps Notifications

So I was thinking, it would be very nice to get Navigation Notifications on the Gear Fit.
The problem is, if you activate notifications for Maps in the Gear Fit Manager and turn on navigation,
notifications won't show up. That's because the type of notification Maps is using.
I looked a bit into it and it seems i found an easy solution.
Someone would just have to write a small app, that's sending a normal notification
every time the actual Maps notification is updating.
Sure, you woud have to delete them later on since they will fill up your Bar,
but anyway, it would work. Just think of cycling for example or what ever.
Maybe i will try to do it, but if someone is experienced in this...would be nice to have.
A dedicated App could be useful as well, but would be harder to do.
Let me hear what you think of it.
Nice idea!

nice idea ! i think it will be also a good idea to have notification from WAZE : radar notification, accident , etc
yeah sure it would work with nearly everything.
i was researching a bit more into this and the app could be like this:
list with all your apps
checkbox so you can select all the apps you want to have notifications
some settings with intervalls etc.
this will also bypass the 10 apps limitation since you can select just this one app
and it will send all the notifications you need:good:

[REQ] Hover / peek better blacklist

Hi, I've been using Hover for a bit and am loving it. The only slight gripe I have about it is that when I get a message through Facebook messenger, it always shows me the "chat heads active" notification before the actual message. What would be really useful is if you could blacklist these hidden (permanent? Not sure what the word is, see the attached picture) notifications that come from some apps (Google Now does it too) but still allow "normal" notifications through. This would also be really useful with peek: I'm assuming that whenever I get a Google Now notification like this, saying the weather or something my device is waking up to poll sensors etc. This isn't necessary, but I don't want to blacklist the whole app as other notifications (reminders etc.) are useful and I'd like to be able to Peek at.
Sorry if this doesn't make a lot of sense, it's rather hard to describe. I know hover and peek are relatively new features and I have no idea how hard this would be to implement, but if possible it would be great
Thanks for all your great work on this ROM!

Long hold notification > App Info > Blacklist > Blacklist from Hover/Blacklist from Peek
Sorry, got ahead of myself.
in fact the google now notification is not a persistent one, just it does show up very frequently, and sadly there is no option on which updates we'd like to receive
had the same problem with facebook messenger, just blacklisted the whole app because as there is a chat head hover notification would be useless

[Q] Faded dot on the left of the notification bar?

What is that faded dot, which appear sometimes on the left of notification bar... like a notification but it's not?
does it show with headphones plugged in?
If it is as Envious is suggesting, then its the Smart connect thing. Or maybe you are talking about the Noisecanceling which appear like a wave sort of.

Like the one in the attached picture ?
A flag, SYSTEM_UI_FLAG_LOW_PROFILE, can be passed to indicate that certain UI elements be put into a Low Profile and offer less of a distraction to the user. If I had a nexus device (really any device with soft buttons across the bottom) then I would also notice those buttons being replaces by the same dim circle I'm seeing in my navbar.
This has been available since 4.0 and is intended for book readers, games, and other immersive applications.
Maybe you have some sort of app that are running in the background. Try to check your task manager.
It's not related with headphones. It looks just like the one in the attachment but if so it should replace a notification, which i dont see after it disappears.
I'll try to get a screenshot the first time i see it.
And please check the task manager to check what is open. Please take screenshot of that too
Unfortunately, i forgot to check running apps but i dont expect any surprises because it was after a video watch. so yes a full screen app was working but there is no clue that it's for visual enhancement and it just disappears after a page refresh.
if it's a notification, i cant get to read it.
I wonder if it can override the gps icon? Maybe it's a notification that what you are using is accessing your location.
I've checked it with the notifications log, it was empty. So it's probably the hidden icon of the running video app in fullscreen. it emerges when i use mx player, as well. thanks for the brainstorming

Notifications During Active Call

Hi guys. I just switched from Apple land and trying to get used to the Android ecosystem since I've been using iPhones since the iPhone 4.
The biggest pain point for me is getting a handle on the notifications. Apple gave you a lot less control over what you see so I'm a bit overwhelmed with the amount of control for SOME apps (I guess it depends on how granular the developer makes it for the users).
My current obstacle is receiving notifications while in an active call. I spend most of my work day in meetings so it's important to see notifications showing up in real time. When I'm on a call the notifications are causing a vibration or alert but there is no popup to indicate which one just came in. When I slide down the notification center I don't think the notifications are sorted by date/time so I have no idea which one just came in.
1) is there a way to force notifications to pop up on screen even when I'm on a call so I can glance at what it's about?
2) is there a way to sort notifications based on date/time so I can make sure the topmost one is the most recent?
3 bonus round) does anyone have a good solution for more iOS like notification bar that looks less congested and confusing (this is one of the only things I miss about iOS)
Thanks.
