Hi guys. I just switched from Apple land and trying to get used to the Android ecosystem since I've been using iPhones since the iPhone 4.
The biggest pain point for me is getting a handle on the notifications. Apple gave you a lot less control over what you see so I'm a bit overwhelmed with the amount of control for SOME apps (I guess it depends on how granular the developer makes it for the users).
My current obstacle is receiving notifications while in an active call. I spend most of my work day in meetings so it's important to see notifications showing up in real time. When I'm on a call the notifications are causing a vibration or alert but there is no popup to indicate which one just came in. When I slide down the notification center I don't think the notifications are sorted by date/time so I have no idea which one just came in.
1) is there a way to force notifications to pop up on screen even when I'm on a call so I can glance at what it's about?
2) is there a way to sort notifications based on date/time so I can make sure the topmost one is the most recent?
3 bonus round) does anyone have a good solution for more iOS like notification bar that looks less congested and confusing (this is one of the only things I miss about iOS)
Thanks.

don't really know if this is in the realm of possibility or not but what I'm looking for is an app that could change how WinMo displays alerts (new SMS, email, reminder, missed call, voicemail, etc.). I guess mostly I want my Touch Pro 2 to show alerts similar to how Android and webOS display them, in a ticker at the top or bottom of the screen. it gets annoying having to exit all the way out of apps just to check a text message and the current Sense UI alert format takes up half the screen and requires attention for dismissal.
it wouldn't really have to change much except maybe the dimensions of the default alert box so it isn't so big, maybe about as large as the task bar is. and then i would need it dismissable on a timer or on any touch of the screen and a tap on the alert would show the whole message.
not sure if i'm asking too much here, or if there is something out there for this i didn't find, or for something that really isn't possible but after noticing how HTC changed how alerts are displayed through their Sense UI, i figure it's not out of the realm of possibility. i, and i'm sure others, would greatly appreciate an app like this.
oh and i'm personally using a Verizon Touch Pro 2 with the latest MightyROM Rhodium Official ROM if that makes any difference.
Hi all,
A few weeks ago i got a DNA and overall i like it but i am becoming increasingly frustrated with the sense. Nothing major just some glitchy little things that are rather irritating.
First off I dont like the default messaging app that comes with the phone. Its slow and lacks features such as a little checkmark when sending texts to other verizon customers recieve a text. the only way i have found to get this is to get a notification in the status bar every time one is delivered which is annoying when a small checkmark next to the text will suffice. I also do not like the skins they have for it, as i prefer an iphone bubble look to my texts. Thus i have resorted to third party sms apps such as handcent, gosms, and iphone messages by barleystudios. with all three of these i have the same issue that seems to be caused by the sense. Neither the icon in the dock/homescreen or in the pulldown bar will display a small unread count on the icon as they are supposed to and the Sense seems to block the message preview box under the lock screen completely when receiving a new text while lockscreen is engaged. Anyone know how to fix this or an app that this isnt an issue with?
Also i have a macbook and use iCal and i have synced it with my gmail account but the app on my phone and iCal dont seem to want to communicate at all. Any fix for this?
no one?
So, fresh out of ios for the last few years I really got use to Google maps having banner notifications while in a different app and navigating.
It seems this is missing on the Android app. It must be doable because I get banner notifications for my phone and music apps.
Curious if anyone has any insight on why this great feature is missing, and if there's any word on it possibly being added.
Anyone have any info at all? Even a Google request page where this is being discussed would be cool. I can't find a thing about on the Web, an it seems like a significant thing to be missing.
They don't do the banner notifications in Android because it's in the notification drawer. Just have to swipe the status bar down to see it.

Hmmmm.... I will give that a shot, but they do banner notification for a couple apps. Phone comes to mind immediately.
Pulling down the drawer is a huge distraction, as is muting the navi voice when a call comes in.
I feel that a banner over my other apps would be more distracting. Different strokes for different folks and all that.
I don't see how on earth directions a person is relying on being hidden is less distracting than being visible. But ya.... Different strokes I suppose.
Given the fact it's on ios and not Googles own OS makes me wonder. I mean, ios is known for having more polished apps, and also known for having better Google Apps in some cases.
Because when I use Maps, it's connected to Bluetooth in my car, thus having no need to see directions. It also tells me where to go via voice controls. If you need to see the directions, why would you be in another app anyway? I sometimes pop into the directions to see a head of time if I'm at a stoplight or something, but just have to double click on the lockscreen notification or the notification drawer and good to go.
To add insult to injury, Google maps will flash a banner notification telling me the route is 'clear', or 'being rerouted'. So..... It seems very very possible to throw in the upcoming turn banner notifications as well.
And for those who use an ear piece, or no blue tooth at all an auto mute function would be so nice.
I just don't understand the lack of these features or the lack of people who find their absence not inconvenient at the least. *sigh *
Coming from a LGv20, where I used the following combo: Cute little bar at the top showed time & an icon for missed notifications (similar to the Always On Display), and an app called Dynamic Notifications.
The idea on the 2 of those, was: If I got a notification while I was able to look at my phone, Dynamic would show it to me, along with a preview of what the message is. You can slide to open it, ignore it for now, or delete it (depending on the app). If I wasn't looking at my phone, I'd at least see an icon on the top bar so I knew to go look.
AOD does fine for the time & you missed a notification, but when I get one, and my phone is sitting next to me, it's annoying to unlock the phone to check the notification.
Sadly, AOD & Dynamic notifications don't seem to work well together.

Now when the phone is on, I'm not getting my heads-up notifications, and I don't know i the LG did it on its own..o what. So I'm using an app called Heads-up at the moment. Heads-up also has a turn-on-phone feature, so I'm testing it and AOD display as a combination.
Oddly though, Go SMS isn't working with Heads-up, and I'm not always getting the Go SMS built in popup.

SO.. what is everyone doing for notification, both with phone on & off?
One last thing - edge lighting - looks neat, but I never put my phone face down. Would kind of kill AOD anyway, no?
Is there any way (with or without root) to increase the maximum number of notification charms shown in the status bar in Android P? So far, I've only been able to find a way to customize the clock position but not the notifications themselves. Thanks!
Yeah, I hate this change in Android Pie. With this and the lack of notification LED, it seems like Google is actively trying to destroy Android's notification system.
+1 The entire notification bar is a train wreck. Move the clock back to the right where permanent icons/info belongs, and clear space on the left for notifications, and let them breath. Probably my biggest annoyance with the phone is the whole lack of notification management. Turning off the AOD lead to missed notifications, so I have to sacrifice battery for the AOD... Then the dumbass clock and 4 icon limit is STILL causing missed notifications. If you have weather app and another notification always hanging around, you're down to 1 or 2 true notification icons?! Seriously?? Really hope Google fixes this, but I have a bad feeling this is how we have to live now... constantly pulling down the notification shade to see what was missed.

Google wont be satisfied until our devices are just as hampered as Apple's.
I don't understand the problem. I have an unread email, a few texts, a whatsapp, and an ebay auction won. I can see the text and the email and the dot. I swipe down, see the text and the email are unimportant, dismiss, and there's the whatsapp and the ebay. Sure, they aren't right there, but you don't read the email in the 1/8th of an inch of status bar, you preview in the notification shade or read in the app.
I wish I could only get 4 notifications. Since switching to the Pixel 3 XL I have one persistent notification that my Fitbit sync service is running. No WhatsApp or Gmail notifications, leading me to miss things left and right. I shut off AoD to save battery, but I don't think it worked before either.

you can hide persistent notifications now without disabling them completely. Just swipe to the left and click on the gear icon, and it will give you the option to minimize the notification. this will allow it to stay in the notification tray without displaying on the notification bar.
Got it working. Apparently my do not disturb settings were conflicting.
i have the same issue, with pie it limiting notificatiosn been shown in status bar, in Note 9 al least there is an option and you can chose to show all notifications.
With the last version of GravityBox you'll have an option to remove max notification icon restriction
