I've tried to search without much success for this issue, so I thought I'd just go ahead and ask. I just picked up a Dell Venue 8 7000 and have noticed some odd behavior with WiFi. It appears that when ever I hold the device by the lower left corner (in portait with the power switch on the upper left) the WiFi connection drops out and either I lose network access or see a drastic drop in signal quality. It's easily repeatable and as soon as I hold the device by the lower left corner the wifi drops out/degrades significantly. Is this something the Dell Venue 8 7000s are just prone to, or did I likely get a bum device? Being as that I can recreate it by simply holding the device, I don't believe this is a software based issue, so what I'm wondering if anyone else is seeing this or whether I should attempt to get a replacement from Dell.
Should I take the lack of responses as a confirmation that not everyone else is having these issues with their venue 8 7000?
I have used the Venue 7480 for close to a year and have not experienced that problem. However, I do believe shortly after I purchased mine i recall someone else had a post concerning the same problem you are experiencing.

I have the same exact issue with mine, bought new. I was going to try a case to see if that prevent the drop. The weird thing is the WiFi indicator shows that it still has signal but the connection is totally dropped.
It's a known issue, the Wi-Fi antenna is in the chin. Wi-Fi is really disappointing, but other than that I love my 7840.
Same here,
sometime the wifi is connected but not working .. or became without signal.
To solve I need to activate/disactivate it.
I will try to reflash the last radio image just to check.
Thanks for the responses.
Sadly, I ended up returning it. I tried to convince my self I could deal with it but I just couldn't. Other than the darn Wi-Fi issue, it seemed like a pretty good tablet.
I guess I'll have to keep looking.
Thanks!

well, i am not sure what to do.
i have sn: BCOKAS005XXX, and i am exhibiting some of the issues. GPS was non-existent before the ICS update. it seems that it improved a little bit with ICS as it picks up 1 or 2 satellites without wifi, but nothing to work with. my samsung galaxy s 4g gets 10 satellites within 2 seconds using GPS TEST.
had a bunch of issues after ICS upgrade with sluggishness and touchscreen lag until i did a factory reset. i do not see a way of clearing the cache as when i do VOL-DOWN and POWER gives me the option to reset using VOL-UP. if i do that, i get sort of the the android with the gear rotating for a couple of seconds and then i get an exclamation mark in a big orange triangle above the android and nothing happens. i have to power down from the button. i am not sure what that is all about. maybe somebody has an idea. by the way, it seems the touchscreen lag improved (still happening sometimes)
wifi still seems crappy. it works, but very slow. i have it sitting next to my computer and i get around 30mb while my computer gets 350mb. i am not sure why the wifi is slow in this tablet. didn't check it on my phone to see what i get. i have only supperficially looked at the bluetooth interfering with wifi issue, as i ran a speedtest with the bluetooth off and with the bluetooth on and does not seem to affect wifi, but i did not have anything connected through bluetooth.
decisions, decisions. i think i have until tomorrow to return it. hope someone can help me with my decision.
so, no inputs?
I hope not......... farrk these threads are getting boring!
I don't know where to begin to test GPS.
Yeah despite weeks of seeing some of you folks make thread about it, I never bothered to check when I got my Prime.
I did come across the Bluetooth paired + streaming over Wifi issue. I can deal with it because it's not so bad since ICS update, crap to marginal quality is better than no stream, which is what I got before the OS update. I'll have to stop pairing BT to obtain high and optimum quality from Netflix steaming though. But oh well.
I can live with it, primarily because the TFP is soon to be on the rare block as the only tablet made of metal, and with ASUS quickly trying to replace it with that ugly plastic TF700T.
I rather deal with the minor pain than to depart from my device so quickly.
I seem to be 1 of the lucky ones with no problem except GPS. If you NEED GPS then this tablet is not for you, or if you can wait few months you'll find some nice tablets. I have few issues but nothing that bothers me. I had a choice ipad2 vs this.... although I think ipad is better (ipad1 owner still) I love the android UI. Mine is not lagging only once in a while... if your freezing all the time exchange it or wait a month...
Seems like your going into recovery mode there with the Vol & power button....here's what you do to wipe....press down VOL- first then POWER for couple seconds (simultaneously) then when you see the writings appear let go then you should be on a screen with Android bot/data wipe box thingy...at this screen press VOL- then press VOL+...wipe should begin....
Return that *****!
Personally I emailed ASUS and told them they have 9 days to either fix my wifi/backplate or I am returning. Plain and simple it does not work in my Apt (wifi) the router is right outside my door and it is a small apt (probably under 500sqft). The building provides Wifi as part of the rent and well it sucks my computer can 10mb/s down and 15 up (I know pitiful). My TFP can connect and get 500kbs in the living room about 15ft from router with a door in the way and drops the signal about every 2mins and in my bedroom about 30ft away with another wall away from the router (2 walls total) I cant even see the ****ing router on my TFP. That performance is bull**** for $600. If they dont fix it I dont want it. I need wifi plain and simple and I am not getting it.
If you are in a similar situation I say return it!
Oh and sorry for the piss poor grammar I am slightly inebriated
Return it while you can, unless you can afford to use it as a paperweight when you get the next droid tablet.
Well, it looks like my luck has finally ran out.
Yesterday morning wireless started dropping out, connecting to a wireless N router (Netgear DGN2000) that has performed fantastically for all the time I've had it, and continues to do so. Signal on every device in the house is excellent on the following devices:
MacBook
iPhone
SGS2
Acer Aspire One netbook
Whilst slightly slower than my other devices, I used to use my Prime all over the house without issue (Honeycomb and then ICS) especially in the bedroom. On Saturday morning though, I started seeing regular dropouts at least once every minute. The device hasn't been dropped or anything like that, but even so if I had to hazard a guess I'd say that one of the wifi antennas has failed.
There are no other networks close to mine in the 2.4Ghz spectrum, but even so I moved the network around the channels to see if it made any difference. Nope, no difference. Rebooted both the Prime and my router several times, no difference. Even when very, very close to the router I still get the drop outs on the Prime, which points to a hardware issue as far as I can tell. Wifi Analyser's graphing is absolutely full of troughs, it's that bad. I'm nearly 100% sure that it's nothing to do with any new devices being introduced locally as no other devices performance has been impacted at all.
So anyway, it looks like I'll be returning my Prime to my local Curry's store tomorrow night for a replacement! I'll be wiping it before hand, so I may just check again after the wipe to make sure it's not some sort of wireless bug. I just hope I don't end up with any new issues with a replacement!
Looks as though maybe the pogopins have dislodged slightly and aren't making perfect contact like before. Try pressing on the top left and right of the top bezel.

Thanks for the advice, but I tried that earlier this evening to no avail. Whilst I agree it's possibly an issue with the pogopins, I put as much pressure on the pin points as I was comfortable with (which was a fair deal) and it made no difference. At the same time, the device has been treated very, very well; and so I wouldn't have expected them to have dislodged so easily anyway.
I'm certainly not willing to do that on any sort of regular basis. I'll get it exchanged and if I have any further issues, I'll give up at that point. I love the tablet and all, but I don't think I'll have the patience of some of you other guys that have been stuck in product return hell.
Hey all, I've had my Prime since Christmas, and I really haven't used it because of the WiFi issue. It was purchased from GameStop. The WiFi is horrible when I try to take it out and use it in locations that I have great WiFi signal with on my phone. The lack of GPS is also annoying, but those are really my only two plights with it at this moment.
So I guess my question is, what should I do? Is Asus doing anything lately to rectify the WiFi and GPS issues, or am I SOL? It's unfortunate, but in retrospect, I should have probably gotten an iPad.
Any help would be infinitely appreciated.

There is no, and will be no fix for the wifi issue.

You can mod your backplate. Other than that, you are SOL.

I opened my prime and improved my wifi drastically (and gps depending on rom since I am unlocked)

In this picture the x is on my wifi router (wrt54g) and the circle is where I downloaded dropbox so I could show my neighbor pictures of my kid flying a kite. Before I modded my prime I could not get connected on my back patio.
Nothing to do other than accept the fact that you've been screwed by ****ty Asus, like the rest of us.

Interesting. whycali, would you mind indulging on the modification more? I'm having a hard time understanding exactly what you did. Also, how hard was it to pull the back panel off? I'd imagine that there's no way to retain the warranty at that point as well, correct?

Of course the warranty is voided but thats up to somebody else to prove it happened and reversing this process is actually easier than doing it because the only thing holding it in is pressure.
I used the video here to open my prime.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1479664
I turned off the main power switch (internal dip switch)
I disconnected the 3 ribbon cables holding the screen to the backplate so I would have room to work. (there are instructions on how to do this in the above post)
I removed the gap between the 3 backplate ground points and the shell beneath them (pushed down the spongy stuff)
I cut 3 small pieces of braided desoldering tape. I laid them on the top edge of the ground points (as shown in the pictures)
I reconnected the ribbon cables.
I turned on the main power switch.
I carefully (so I would not disturb the new unsecured ground points) put the face plate back on (top edge slides in first the rest of the clips snap back into place).
Hi,
I've been having a somewhat mysterious problem with the wireless internet (Wi-Fi) signal on my SCH-1545, hopefully someone here can help me find a solution.
Details:
At rest, my wi-fi signal is weak, regardless of which network or router is producing the signal.
I use an oversized Anker 7800mAh battery, which adds a considerable amount of weight and bulk to my GS4.
I am currently running a recent snapshot release of Cyanogenmod (11-20140804-SNAPSHOT-M9-jflte). The last time I updated was few weeks ago, but my wifi issue began sometime early this week. Thus, it seems unlikely that the ROM is to blame. For what it's worth, my baseband version is 1545VRUAMDK.
Oddly, after some poking around, I've discovered that applying pressure to the back of the phone near the lock button seems to increase the quality of my wifi connection. For example, at rest right now my phone shows a 30% signal; when squeezed in the aforementioned manner, the signal jump s immediately to 55-60%.
I suspect that there may be some fault with the wifi antenna connector, or with the antenna itself.
My best theory right now is that a mishap or fall with this bulky battery installed may have delivered a shock to the phone's hardware beyond what it is designed to withstand. Consequently, it seems that the wifi system was somehow compromised. I've tried cleaning the wifi contacts as suggested here[1] .
Has anyone had this problem? Can anyone offer a solution?
I can't go on using my phone like this, and to get a replacement will be quite costly. However, if I do end up getting a replacement, I have my eyes on a LG G3
Thanks for your help!

Have your tried doing a factory reset? I know this is a pain in the butt but maybe it will put your mind at ease. Have you dropped the phone or anything that would cause the antenna to suddenly become loose? Is your connection bouncing up and down or is it consistenly just staying low? Also before a factory reset try getting Wifi Analyzer from the app store and check to see whats going on. Just sounds rather buggy that it suddenly started happening.
Same thing been happening to mine just recently. Seems like when I squeeze the battery cover the wifi signal is stronger for a limited amount of time.

If you squeeze your phone and it affects signals take off battery cover and try tightning all the little screws around the phone with the battery out.. might help just saying
Thanks for your suggestions folks, but I still seem to be in a pickle.

I tried a factory reset, didn't seem to help according to Wifi Analyzer (thanks for the app suggestion). As I said in my original post, I fear that drop may have caused this problem: since I use a heavy extended battery, I expect the damage caused by any fall would be magnified.

I attempted this as well - I removed the back cover and ensured all the ribbon cables and antenna cables were making a firm connection, and then I tightened all the cover screws. Nothing seems to have helped. Concurrent with my previous statement, I fear one of the modules (specifically the wifi/bluetooth SIC) on the motherboard may have become slightly dislodged from a random fall.
Does anyone know of a way I can test this theory or get it fixed if such is the case?

i'm in the same boat, my phone is exeriencing the exact same issue. I've got a new back plate on order, hopefully replacing that and the wifi/bluetooth antenna will resolve it.
have you had any success since this post?
Hello, so i just bought brand new iphone 12 and noticed issue with wifi connection. The connection drops significantly while covering the top of the phone. I first noticed it while trying out the pubg mobile when ms jumped from 50 to 400 as soon as i covered too left part of the phone and then went back to normal after removing my hand. Has anyone esle experienced this? Or do i need to get it replaced
5Ghz WiFi?
I’ll test this out after work, but it’s not surprising. The antennas are right there and with 5Ghz WiFi your body will cause interference.

I think your device might be faulty. Or you are using a bad design case maybe that blocks RF signals.
Hope it helps

Which brand of router do you use? Also agree with @Tachi91 regarding the place of the antennas. Just tried it myself and indeed covering the top of tour iPhone with your hand decreases the WiFi signal, so that's completely normal. Regards, kuzibri
