I currently have an lg g3 ls990 rooted running stock lollipop 5.0.1
My issue is i would like to install cm 12 and twrp recovery but I am also concerned about the risks to my devices security. I have always encrypted my phone and i have done many software tweeks through various root apps to keep my device throughly locked down. My main question is how will my security needs be translated over to cm12? And will twrp work once ive encrypted my sd and my phones internal storage?

I keep getting that annoying OTA message to update my phone but I don't know if it will lock me out of CFW possibilities. I'm on unrooted VRUAME7 and want to upgrade to a new version and install CFW (which I had a while ago until I lost root). But it seems everyone is already on the newest firmware and I don't know how to upgrade to a point where it is possible to still do root and CFW.

First off, CFW isn't the correct term, Custom ROM is.
Second, if you want 4.3, upgrade incrementally to MK2, if you want 4.4, upgrade to NC5, not NG6! Although you can Root NG6, SafeStrap (the only option for custom recovery, TWRP + CWM doesn't work!) doesn't work on NG6 yet. So I personally use NC5 w/ Eclipse 4.0.2 in my Stock Slot, and GPE (SafeStrap edition) in my ROM Slot 1.
The boot loader with the highest chance of unlock is... well none. I and many others think that there may never be an Unlock for our Boot loader. however, for a Bootloader bypass (Still running AOSP/CM ROMs), I would stay on MK2 or NC5, as those two boot loaders both have a hack to enable custom modules, and therefore kexec (which loads custom ROMs on locked boot loaders), though exec is a WIP for both as of yet. Seems like NC5 is the main development platform though.

I think you stated the question in your answer better than I asked it
How can I incrementally upgrade without going all the way to the latest ROM? I'm searched for incremental update and ame7 to but neither worked.

OTA is in incremental I believe. I had to go ME7 ==> MI1 ==> MK2 and it took about half an hour.
Hi, I recently purchased the GPE Z Ultra on ebay. The seller upgraded it to 5.0 before sending it to me and so far so good. But I am coming from a Note 2, rooted & loaded with a custom ROM (Goodness). I really want to root the Z Ultra but not load any custom rom, don't need it really. I've been reading up in the forum & so far, it looks like I am out of luck in regards to rooting, is this correct? There is no root available for 5.0 & I most likely will not be able to downgrade, root & then update to 5.0, correct? I just want to make sure I understand the current status of root availability and my status (already upgraded to 5.0 & no access to TA from previous version). This is my first nonSamsung Android phone & the rooting/unlocking bootloader is quite new to me, so I'm trying to learn all I can. Thank you all!
Correct. Without unlocking the bootloader, there is no way to root Android 5.0 - previous root methods exploited Android system security holes as opposed to boot process security holes, and so far no one has identified any root access vulnerabilities in Android 5.0.
I'm currently running rooted stock 5.0 OTA, but upgrading was rather painful and my bootloader is unlocked, which is what allowed me to flash a rooted 5.0 system image in the first place. I have a locked TA backup from 4.4.4, but I'm afraid to attempt a relock with it.
Unfortunately, I think you're out of luck if you want to retain your TA partition. Darn chicken and egg problems... You can't backup the TA without root. If a Lollipop vulnerability is discovered, we're likely to hear about it soon afterwards... That's a big "if" though.
Thanks, that's what I thought but wanted to confirm I wasn't missing anything. Hopefully, some sort of exploit will be found. Still getting used to the new Lollipop/GPE version. I like it so far except for missing some additional settings/tweaks I could use via root.
I might end up switching over to here from the Galaxy S3 within the next few months and I'm concerned on the bootloader/root status. As of the latest OTA that's been pushed, would this still work to flash custom ROMs and if it does, do I literally just have to follow the thread and I'm running(for example) the latest CM12 nightly? Thanks!

Yes but I believe you'd first need to downgrade to 10b and then root in order for this to work.
What he said. And we don't have root for Lollipop on our phone yet, but some developers here are working on it. You have to downgrade to 10B and root using Stump, then you can re-upgrade to 12B, which is the latest official stock LG version of Android on our phones. Lollipop is expected to officially drop on our phone anytime from a minute from now until the end of 2015. :\
We have a leak of the 23A build of Lollipop for our phone. I like it despite not being able to keep root when upgrading, for now. 23B, according to the open source code released by LG, will be the actual official Lollipop for us.
I came from the S3, too. I loved the phone, but got bored. I haven't regretted it, I love the G3 even better. The camera is awesome, I love how it feels. The first Android phone that I haven't wanted a case for.

So it's not locked down in any sort of way(minus root)? I don't wanna get a phone not be able to mess around with it

The answer depends on what you're looking for. If you want to have a phone with a custom recovery on it, with or without root, then yes we have that and can flash ROMs like crazy under KitKat 4.4.2, make nandroids, flash kernels and even an older modem if you like, etc. Under Lollipop, there's no way to do anything at all until we get a hold of the full ROM KDZ file that they can extract and modify to make flashable, rooted Lollipop ROMs.
I'm liking how smooth stock LG Lollipop is, though, and LG's built-in backup option under 4.4.2 and 5.0.1 make having a clean flash of 4.4.2 and manual upgrade to 5.0.1 even less painful than restoring with Titanium Backup because LG's backup is extremely fast, includes data and also includes the system data although I have yet to see (shortly) just how much system data is restored from an older ROM to a newer one, since it warns that not all system data might be restored when having backed up under an older ROM.
FYI, technically, I think the bootloader is still locked, however they have this thing called bump which evidently tricks the phone into still accepting flashes of non-official ROMs, by way of having a "bumped" version of TWRP installed, which can be done straight from Flashify in the Play Store as soon as you root using Stump brute force under 10B (an older LG stock ROM), reboot, install SuperSU, have it install/update the binary and reboot once more.
Then you can use @autoprime's Flash2 zip files in TWRP to flash the boot.img, modem.img and system.img of stock 12B if that's what you want, and then flash the latest SuperSU.zip, or whatever ROM you want. Sorry if I'm repeating some of what I had already said before.
Good luck, whatever way you decide.
Hi, i am rooted VS985 with king root, installed TWRP and on Stock 4.4.2 and rooted for deleting all pre loaded verizon and amazon apps and did some changes in system folders like hidden menu etc .. all deleted not today when i connected my PC software assistance tool , it says update is available.. see thumbnails
Now, i am confused if i update my rooted device , can i brick my phone?
please someone guide me, should i go for this update or NOT??
If you ran the update through the tool it would fail since you are rooted and don't have stock recovery installed anymore. It's good practice to never update the phone via OTA or tool if you are rooted and/or have a custom recovery installed.
To update to the latest firmware, use twrp to flash the 35B (5.1.1) version of Skydragon, jasminerom, or xdabbeb's in the Verizon G3 android development section. All are stock based ROM's and run great. 5.1.1 has been a godsend for this phone. Much smoother and better battery life.
I have a Samsung Galaxy A5 2016 (A510F) running Marshmallow. It's rooted, custom kernel, custom recovery, tripped Knox, but the rom is stock (although it has been reflashed a couple of times). Usually you're not able to get updates from official channels with this configuration, but I have the system status faked as "Official" so I'm able to get official OTA updates.
Now my question is: will installing such (official OTA) updates cause any problems to my phone (bricks, instability, bootloops...)?
Restoring a nandroid is an option, but I would like to hear the community's thoughts.
