Flashing problems - Nexus 9 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello!
I tried flashing my Nexus 9 for the first time today. I have done this before on other devices, just been a while since last!
I first tried Dirty Unicorns. I installed TWRP, wiped the device and installed the rom but when booting the device get stuck at the Google logo. How long "should" it stay there?
Same thing wehn tring AICP rom.
Between flashing these roms i went back to stock with Nexus Root Toolkit and it booted as normal, just about 10s-20s(?) at the Google logo..
What am i doing wrong??????
Thanks,
Eric

Did you unlock the bootloader?
Verstuurd vanaf mijn Nexus 9 met Tapatalk

Yes ofc! (can I install twrp without unlocking?)
I'm pretty sure It says unlocked in the boot menu.

It's those roms. They are based on a version of cyanogen that has a loooong boot problem. It takes about 7 or 8 minutes on the Google logo. Cyanogen has since fixed the issue, but those 2 roms have not.

Same thing happened to me, and I didn't try to flash a CM based, I tried Pure Nexus which is AOSP and it hung at the Google logo for a good 10 minutes before I decided to flash-all.bat back to stock, now I'm stock MM, not-encrypted, not rooted with TWRP recovery installed, stock is pretty good and haven't really feel the need to root, but that's no fix for the flash addicted type.
Erik

I'm not flash-addicted, I just want a smooth nexus 9. So much stutter, loading the keyboard etc in the original rom. I was hoping it would be better in dirty unicorns.

If you want smooth go with MM. Never realized how slow lolli was until I installed MM.

Does it help to go unencrypted? I dont know about you guys but its often my nexus 9 thinks several seconds before opening an app or the multitasking window or going to the homescreen...

I always go unencrypted when I can. When I encrypted my M7 for use of work apps and WiFi access. It made my phone more sluggish. I have no secrets on my tablet unless you count the porn? Lol. I always disable it.

[Q] Frustrated at constantly having to reflash ROMs

Hello first of all I would like to thank all the great developers for the great ROMs out there.
Second I would like to warn everyone that this is a "first world problem rant" that I'm about to write up with a legit frustration I have.
I have a rooted Samsung Galaxy S4 from ATT and the only reason I got this phone over any other Android phone is the great camera and the screen.
I absolutely hate TouchWiz. It's bloated, slow and painfully ugly (to me). For this reason I decided to try out Flashing roms.
For the last couple of weeks (months maybe?) I have been using Cyanogenmod 10.1 stable with not many problems. Mostly camera issues but no biggie.
My frustration is the following: CyanogenMod has had two stable updates for my phone to go from 10.1 to 10.2 and, though it flashes perfectly, every time I reboot the phone the phone gets stuck on the "Samsung Custom (lock)" screen and I am forced to go into TWRP and reflash 10.1+Gapp from my SD carfd.. This happens EVERY TIME. With CM10.1 I can restart the phone just fine by the way. It's 10.2 and other Roms that make get stuck on the Samsung Custom (lock) screen.
So i decided to try out Gummy ROM because Kit Kat
I put the ROM in my SD card, Formated, Wiped and Installed. Worked like a charm until the camera wasnt working that well. I read the forums and said to restart to fix the camera.. Guess what?...AGAIN....Stuck on Samsung Custom (lock) screen.
My frustrations is that pretty much EVERY Rom that I have tried minus CM10.1 has done this to me and I have no idea what I'm doing wrong.
I have tried battery pulls, waiting 30 seconds, wiped dalvik, cache, etc. Fixed Permissions....everything and I have to reflash the ROMs almost 99% of the time unless I use CM10.1. I am tired of reading forums to fix this so here I am asking for your help.
NOTE: Most, if not all of these ROMs are designed for ATT.
/endrant
I have no idea what else to do so any help would be great.
INFO:
Current ROM: Gummy 1.1-11-21-13-UNOFFICIAL
Android 4.4
Baseband version
I3377UCUAMDL
Kernel Version
3.4 g0-Elite-Kernel-ga719cb
Build Number:
KRT16S
Google Apps:
Gapps-Kk-20131113.Zip
TWRP Version
I have no idea and I'm not about to restart phone and go through the pain of reflashing the ROM again as I just did. I will punch so many babies if I have to do this again!'
Thanks for listening.
I had the same problem and switched to Philz Touch instead of TWRP, I like TWRP a lot more and most people say its more stable, but that's what fixed it for me.

I have read, on CM's site somewhere I believe, they recommend using CWM for a recovery. I use 6.0.4.4 and have no issues with getting stuck at the boot logo. There was an issue with that but CM addressed it in one of the nightlies about two weeks ago.
I had that issue when I had a newer twrp recovery I have the .2 whatever one and I havnt had it since.

Flashing new ROM not working

Hi guys,
A while back I rooted my Galaxy S3 gt-i9300 international and loaded the S4 Revolutionairy ROM onto it which worked perfectly.
This weekend I decided to flash a new ROM since I have a new phone now and I want to give this one to my girlfriend to replace her old S2.
First I had to upgrade CWM to flash a 4.4 ROM and so I did via Odin. No problems here.
If I perform a wipe data/factory reset it says it can't mount the data partition. A manual mount also gives back an error. If I do load a ZIP file from the external SD card it gives back an error that it can't access data partition, error 7
Looking around I find dozens of people with similar problems but not exactly the same. So I'm a little afraid I make the wrong decision here. The phone keeps booting fine in the S4 Revolutionary ROM but of course the factory reset part did work so every time I have to log into my Google account.
I think I have to flash a factory ROM via Odin first, so basically revert it back to stock completely. Anyone out there who can point me in the right direction or has a better idea?? Thanks!
Did you tried to flash TWRP recovery 2.7.x and then try to install a new rom.Download the latest version of recovery directly from TWRP website

No. Since the galaxy s1 I use cwm.
But it's worth a shot. I'll keep you posted.will try this later on.

Flash latest Cwm but i am afraid that Odin and stock rom will only work. More work but not that much

I don't like to flash with CWM. There's no way to flash with Philz Touch? Use it, way better. When people ask me to flash a custom ROM, I use Philz. It's prepared make a factory reset and prepare your phone to a new ROM without problems.
But if you're going through with CWM, I suggest to get the lastest version and try again.
It worked fine with TWRP 2.7.1.0
I really love it, looks very good, lots of options and just really working fine!
I just flashed the Liquid Smooth ROM with Android 4.4.4. My phone is really really fast now!
Thanks a lot
Hi,
I flashed Carbon ROM 4.4.4 you can find it here
Or dowload directly from here.
The Google Apps can be download from here, I used the Nano version, only the Google base, Google services and Google search are incorporated so byebye Google+ and al unwanted stuff, Google Now is in there though but the complete package comes in at only 57 MB which saves a lot of space, Gmail and YouTube can be downloaded from the Play store.
I'm really impressed by this ROM, it's really fast, everything works including both camera's, bluetooth in my car works flawlessly (connects faster then ever), battery life is also really good so far, took it from the charger 7.30 this morning and used it quite a bit till now (15:00) and still at 77%. Wifi is working fine and GPS connection is really fast (had to figure out first they use another icon for GPS now and it's on the right on the taskbar now).
A lot can be customized as well but I also installed Xposed now for even more freedom.
I can really recommend it, I like it more than CM (which I also really like) but that's personal.
PS I'm a big fan of the TWRP recovery now. It's really so much better than CWM and much much more intuitive.

Nexus 9 firmware with no encryption

Hi guys,
I've flashed my Nexus 6 with Stock Lite without encryption and the phone is working very well. I was hoping to find stock like for the nexus 9 but it seems there is no version of it for Nexus 9.
What firmware would you guys recommend that is the closest to stock android, of the less bloated without encryption enforced that I can put on my nexus 9?
My model is the 16GB WIFI only
Thanks!
My AOSP is closest to stock, followed closely by Noobbuilds and Pure Nexus - all excellent, but there are other good ROMs worth checking out too. I recommend Fire-ice kernel
Hmm, I'm having problems trying to install twrp on the nexus. I unlocked the bootloader, then flashed using fastboot flash recovery twrp.img but when I press power and volume up, I can't get to twrp, it keeps booting to the normal android bootloader.
Am I missing something? :/

You have to reboot straight into recovery after installing, or it'll be overwritten
I just got myself a Nexus 9 – have been meaning to get one for a while to tinker with, and found one in mint condition for relatively cheap. Got it with stock 7.1.1, but it didn't feel as snappy as I'd hoped, so I flashed Lineage OS and that left me with the same feeling. I'm now running decrypted stock 7.1.1 with magisk for root, and it's pretty much as snappy as my OnePlus 3. Haven't tried any other ROMs decrypted, but I'm pretty sure the same applies. Lacking encryption hardware acceleration, the Nexus 9 just isn't meant for encryption.
To disable forced encryption in stock 7.1.1, I used xda user gladiac's FED-Patcher (should work for any ROM): https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/fix-fed-patcher-v8-forceencrypt-disable-t3234422

But it says 7.1.1 is not supported?
somebody tell how to disable encryption on nougat 1 CM/linage roms. I used WUG toolkit to flash no-encrypt kernel and got twrp bootloop instead, unable to mount storage, system, data

Unable to install cm12 custom ROM - unknown bootloader

So for various reasons, many problems with cm13, candy and lineage ROMs, I decided to go back to cm12 (carbon ROM)
Wasn't simple but eventually I got there and everything was good for a week. Then for some reason the wifi stopped working, getting stuck at 'turning on wifi'.
At this point I couldn't do much of anything except restore my old backup of carbon ROM.. couldn't install cm13 (hang at first boot) couldn't install candy 6 or 7 (boot loops) or lineage (boot loops). Couldn't even restore backups I'd made of those others.
So, several hours of effort got me back to rooted stock 5.1. Everything works right now, including wifi, but I'm stuck at stock which of course is less than ideal. I figured I could try a clean install of carbon ROM but this is now my problem. When I try to install via TWRP, I get an error saying that it requires bootloader .....b322 but my bootloader is 'unknown'.
A week of fiddling and flashing and I'm stumped. Anyone know what's wrong and how to fix it?

European version update

Hi all first post here.
My phone has no option to do a software update.
Currently 6.0.1
How do I do it?
I'm in England
Thanks
Hello. X820 has by default Chinese ROM with possibility to choose English language. There are also various mods of original EUI but they are all 6.0.1 since LeEco didn't make 7 and probably will not anymore. To try android 7 you need have TWRP recovery flashed and then try some Android 7 available here like Resurrection Remix, Mokee, AOSP etc. However playing with this ROMs requires a kind of advance.

Thanks for that I'd have never had known.
OK I need TWRP... Been on the website, which version would be best for me to download for my phone? There is a lot to choose from.
I will do it through my laptop as I have just had a quick read on the appstore version of TWRP and there's a lot of bad feedback for the app.
3.1.1.0 should be ok. Try to run it first with "fastboot boot" command and the first thing after it runs successfully make a backup of your system, data, efs, boot before you will try flashing any ROM. If you have stock there will probably will not be possible to make dirty flash so you should know which data backup other way. I usually only backup SMS and call log. Other things like photo, contacts are on Google disk if configured.

Upgrading to 7 has its issues, some of us have had severe camera issues since trying 7 out.
Ok, I'll have a go. I have never rooted a phone before. There are so many how to videos that I'm not sure which to use. Is there a guide that 100% work for my phone that you know of? I'm quite capable of following instructions on how to do it but want to make sure the guide I use won't mess my phone up. I don't want to have to use my old galaxy S as a backup phone lol
Resurrection remix looks nice, I'd love my phone to be updated with something like that.
My camera has a crack in it so it's not focusing properly anyway so that's no bother.

Ok. Download the twrp file. Connect to the phone. Boot phone pressing vol minus and power buttons together. In Windows from command line issue proper fastboot command to boot twrp without flashing.
