How can I downgrade my S4 (SCH-i545) from lollipop to KitKat? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

I just bought this phone used from ebay. It has Lollipop 5.0.1. I want to downgrade to KitKat 4.4.2 (I like it better and I want to root it.) I hate Lollipop!
I've tried flashing a couple different firmware's from Sam Mobile, but Odin starts then fails every time. Is there something else I should be doing?
SCH-i545
5.0.1
Baseband
I545VRUGOF1
Kernal
3.4.0
Build number
LRX22C.I545VRUGOF1

You are outta luck, no downgrading available.

If bootloader is updated no way going back... It's locked up by Verizon, the only way to downgrade it's if you installed ROMS from xda because they don't update bootloaders

Yep your screwed just like me.. Hoping for either a new root method or a boot loader unlock.

I wonder if this hack will help us? see: http://www.redmondpie.com/android-factory-reset-protection-can-be-bypassed-on-samsung-phones-video/

Nope, looks like that just returns it to a fresh install of whatever version of android you're on.

Well it says it will allow you to install a apk that gives access to reset/restore. I thought maybe that's exploitable to gain root somehow..

Try to wipe all the contents from recovery then flash the exact firmware of KitKat may be it will work.
find correct firmware for your network and then flash.
backup all your data.

I'm on 5.0.1 OF1 locked verizon s4. My phone is completely blank as of now. I am willing to give anything a try to gain root in hopes of getting a custom rom installed. Any idea what steps i should take to try this. Since this is a new exploit, I have a feeling this will be used in a new root or unlock method. Its just a matter of waiting for someone to come up with something to use this method.

Tried that, you need root to do this. I can't get root in OF1. But the new exploit that is for all samsung devices including OF1 bootloader is here: http://www.redmondpie.com/android-factory-reset-protection-can-be-bypassed-on-samsung-phones-video/
However no one that I know of has developed a root method using this exploit. Gaining access and being able to install a apk that gives access to reset/restore maybe we can use that to install a custom recovery. I really don't know if its possible to get root from this but maybe, so i'm hoping there is a way.

Even if you don't have nandroid backup just find a phone similar to you that has any root access and take nandroid backup image of that phone then flash that image to your phone now you can gain root access, but you have to restore your phone once you do this.

I don't have a backup. So If I can get a backup of someone with root your saying this exploit will allow me to install it? How would I do that? with odin or just off the SD card?

Who downgrade done?

If you get such type of nandroid backup then open with the android kitchen then extract that image then recompile that image to odin flashable format, may be it will work 50% chance is there.

Not to thread jack but I'm wondering the same thing except I'm rooted on oc1 using muniz's deodexed oc1 rom and running xposed framework. But is it possible for me to flash an oc1 rom with nk4 bootloader using my flashfire app since I'm rooted over my current rom? So I can then downgrade to 4.4.2 nk4 ? Or I am totally screwed since I believe his stock rooted deodexed rom came with official lollipop bootloader?
Edit* I love lollipop, the memory leak is fixed with xposed but my major gripe is the battery life over kitkat sucks

[Q] Upgrade From MDK - Don't Care About bootloader

I've been trying hard to find the answer and I just can't - I searched these threads for a while.
I currently have Galaxy S4 with MDK which is rooted and has the unlocked bootloader.
I have SDM and SEAndroid frozen on Titanium Backup.
I want to un-freeze those and upgrade to the newest version but still keep my root and all of my root apps. I don't care about the unlocked bootloader - all the root apps I use don't have anything to do with using the bootloader (well I have twrp installed but don't use it).
Can I use OTA Rootkeeper, unfreeze SDM and SEAndroid and take the OTA update? Will I still have root access (again remember, I don't need to have unlocked bootloader)?
I ask because I'm very happy with everything on my phone the way it is - I like where my apps are, I like everything. I don't want to bother flashing roms - I just have no interest. I want to do the update and have everything the way it was and all my folders in their place (less the unlocked bootloader) and still have root for my programs like Titanium Backup and Greenify. super su - etc.
Please - any help would be appreciated.
Afaik, taking the update will ineed cost you your current root. However, I am on stock 4.3 and root using vroot and then used a script to uninstall the foreighn superuser app and add supersu. I have experienced no ill effects as of yet, though some would say that they aren't comfortable using this root method. There is no evidence to support it being entirely safe nor malicious in intent. It does provide root and you can keep all your apps data. Though...if you take the update, I would strongly suggest a factory reset to decrease potential problems...just my 2 cents buddy

The bootloader is technically only bypassed through a Loki exploit, not unlocked.
For all intents & purposes that doesn't change anything to most users so I don't know what Richii was trying to get at.

I have an MDK so I don't need it. But please do someone a favor, don't kill that MDK S4. Either just flash a rooted 4.3 that was designed for your MDK device, or sell it to someone so they have the opportunity to play with it. There are a ton of people on this forum stuck on the newer versions that would kill to get what you have.

I won't kill it if I knew how to upgrade stock rom without losing my apps and data - lol. That's really my problem. Looks like there's a stock rom here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517611 - but there are so many files there. I have no idea what to do or which one to download? I don't know what Loki'd Kernel is or Aroma installer, deodexed, etc etc (and I don't have the time) - I just want to upgrade and keep my apps and data the way they are - lol. If after I upgrade it's no good - I'll go back to my backup.
I have MDK with TWRP installed.

Start researching odin. More than likely you will have to reinstall a clean image.
safestrap enabled hyperdrive powered
I advise you to search up odin, sounds like you have bricked your phone. Before you even start to root your phone, I advise you to read and re-read all the documentation of the process of rooting your phone. Making sure and double checking if that specific rooting process is made for your specific model and build version.
You can easily find out what build version and model you have by simply looking at your phone setting<more<about phone
Be very careful and double check before doing anything with custom roms.

No, it wont. As in, it won't repair your phone.
Please read what you somehow managed to miss.
You'll need to re-flash your phone with an appropriate no-wipe or full-wipe rom from the development forum.
Then, once it's working, consider reading first before flashing anything else.

[Q] [Help] New to rooting

Hello,
I am really new to rooting and custom roms. I've looked everywhere and can't seem to find a tutorial on how to root the S4-i545 on NC5. I don't understand custom recovery, and overall I'm just a really bad noob at this. Could I be linked to an informative tutorial to help me better understand things? Also, if there is a tutorial on how to root the i545 on NC5 that would be fantastic.
I'm really stuck and I've been researching for the past few days and still haven't come across anything helpful..
Thanks!

rooting and custom roms loading are not for the faint of heart. Going to NC5 is fairly complex process and requires alot of patience and alot knowledge concerning odin process as using odin is key part of the inst all of downgrading. I take it your phone is already NC5 and you took the OTA?

Read the following: from Surge1223.
That will allow you to downgrade to 4.3, root it, then eventually upgrade to 4.4 while retaining root.
You do NOT want to downgrade to 4.3 if you've installed 4.4. The kernel modules for 4.3 won't work unless you run bypasslkm at every boot, which appears to be a challenge for a number of people. Once you've started the NC5 upgrade, you really want to be on 4.4.
If you're still on 4.3 (MK2) and want to upgrade to NC5, I'd recommend using this. It's a lot easier to do, but it only applies if your MK2 system is basically factory stock but rooted (or if you can get it back to stock.)
I've gotten my answer on downgrading, could someone please explain to me what recovery is?

There's three ways you can boot your android device.
First is normal mode. That's the way it nomally boots, running the full operating system.
The second is downloader mode. This mode allows you to flash new software images using ODIN.
The third is recovery mode. Factory recovery allows you to flash updates, wipe the stock ROM, factory reset, etc. A custom recovery allows you to flash arbitrary updates (those which aren't signed by Samsung).
Phones running MDK bootloader can have a custom recovery that allows you to flash nonstandard ROMs.
Past MDK, this requires the use of Safestrap recovery.
Quick question - where would I put necessary files on my SD card? Under which directory?

Hello guys, I am on stock mk2, 4.3 with root, and I just downloaded safetrap 3.71 haven't installed it. Im familiar with flashing via twrp, however Im not sure which method to use. There are alot of different methods from downgrading to upgrading. What is my best option? Will i need to update modem+kernel?
i can only recommend visiting my thread and downloading 1 file upgrade. either the Complete Package which has all the apps modems modules ect you'll need or just the NC2 or NC5 1 file upgrade you flash in Odin 3.10 for the safest and easiest upgrade possible since your already on 4.3 rooted with safestrap then you don't really need to worry about downgrading as you shouldnt have to downgrade. Just avoid OTA/Full System Odin Flashes and well anything with bootloaders in them... at least thats what I'd do if I was you

why is it bad flashing this OTA? Also just from reading posts, if I flash full nc5+root i had to flash modem + patches? or am I incorrect? This phone is going to be for someone else, So i want to stick with stock + root as much as possible. One key feature it must have is wifi tethering.
Also, what method are you suggestion I use in your post. method1 or method2?

That's the way I did it (munoz_ri's I545_MK2toNC4_KeepRoot), starting with clean MK2. One small flash and a reboot and it's done.
If you're starting at MK2, that's the fastest way to go.
If you're starting at NC5, use Surge1223's or Gigilie's upgrade. techguy2002's directions are easier to follow than Gigilie's IMHO.
Here's some very well written instructions for gigilies method: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2769480

Mk2, NC2, and NC5 are all valid bootloader as well as ROM bases and it might matter which combo you have if you run into bugs down the road.

I didnt know. I just finished flashing the ota and seems to work fine, apart from getting auth issues from hotspot. But this phone currently doesnt have service(activated) so i cannot test the hotspot. But things seem to work well. Whhy would i need a different bootloader, and how can i tell which version I am on?

I just linked to @Surge1223 's TetherEnable zip in my OP and added flashing instructions.

Rooting my new T-Mobile GS5

I just switched to T-mobile, and pick up a new GS5, but I don't understand the root method. Can some point me in the right direction?

I rooted my original gs. But it's been a while. Odin was the software I used I think.

Make sure you have the Samsung drivers installed on your computer so odin recognizes your phone
Just install it in Odin .
Then download a rom of choice and follow the install instructions for the particular Rom

The easiest way is to downgrade to an earlier version that you can use towel root to root with .. As far as I know their is no way to root NH5 as of now .. I could be wrong but Im pretty sure ..Have you rooted a samsung device before ?

There's a way to root every version of software they're released. Since the bootloader is unlocked, all that's needed is to flash a custom recovery, then when TWRP asks you if you want to root, just click yes, and you're done. It'll always be like this unless they lock the bootloader.

Google is your friend. Don't take this the wrong way, but if people keep giving you links, you'll never find what you're looking for yourself. If you just google "TWRP Galaxy S5", the first link is the right one. It'll tell you how to flash it as well using ODIN.
Just wondering if there was a Knox fix yet?

Why? Tmobile does even care.
No I know that, but Samsung AllShare Cast Dongle does care.. the dongle won't work on a rooted device. I had a Samsung galaxy note 10.1 that I rooted but I used triangle away to reset counter and it then would work. I use my tablet and dongle most nights and my other allshare in my car for my appradio. The S5 and Tab S will be first devices I didn't root
Any news on Knox?
Its been awhile since i rooted my phones and flashed roms. I juat rooted my s5. But i dont believe i installed a custom recovery. In the past i always downloaded rom manager and installed cwm through the app. But it says device not compatible. Or ud download goo manager and install twrp through that app and i dont see the version for my tmobile s5 listed. Can someone help me with flashing a custom recovery. And recommend any stable custom roms i should try out. Also if there is anything i need to be careful of when flashing i dont care about tripping my knox counter. My device isnt warrantied anyway.
