u/ariloche123 from r/Nexus6P was able to compare the screens from the 6P and Note 5, side by side. They aren't the best pics in the world but it's clear that the screen on the 6P is pretty close to the Note 5's

Both displays have adaptive off i think.
Here's the link to the thread in question https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus6P/comments/3qbey1/nexus_6p_graphite_next_to_a_note_5/
you cant really tell from the pics but the note 5 is clearly brighter and sharper but not by that much

Brighter, sure, but sharper? The font on the 6p is smaller and different so its hard to compare.
That pic is so blurry and basically no info.. Nothing can be gleaned from that.
the screen on the note 5 looks larger.. maybe because of the smaller bezels and off screen buttons? (i can't see any quality/brightness differences from this pic haha)
the only thing i got from this thread is "mines"
They look the same to me. But, I do understand tech nerds need straws to grasp at for every phone release..so be it.

He does good reviews but I don't see him as someone who is going to go out of his way to compare the displays with adaptive off. The pictures in this thread tell a lot regarding brightness. I'll have the 6P tomorrow and I'll be able to test this on my own.
Well this was a worthless comparison. They both are equally as bright and sharp indoors. It's outside where the differences are apparent. The Note 5 gets significantly brighter outside than the Nexus 6P does. And thats what will matter to most people. Rememeber the Nexus 6? Couldn't see that screen outside at all. 6P is better, but not in Note territory.
Gotta love it how desperate nexus users are to convince themselves that the nexus has same awesome display as the note 5 lmao
Even if Nexus 6P has the exact same screen as the Note 5, it will never reach the same brightness as it does on the Note 5.
If you have used an S6 or a Note 5 in sunlight with auto brightness enabled, you will have noticed a definitive "step" in max brightness. The first step is the theoretical max brightness of the display and the following step is the overboost capability which sacrifices contrast to briefly boost the brightness beyond the regular brightness.
This capability is absent in the Nexus 6P, the maximum brightness that you set with the brightness slider is the maximum brightness you will get.

Don't pay him any mind. There's been about 3-4 people that have played around in the 6P forum for the past month with practically nothing positive to say about the phone and he's one of them. If you have nothing positive to say about the phone, you probably don't want it, and if you don't want it, why are you here other than to spew nonsense? He probably has the Note 5 if you check his past posts.
The two photoes are not clear, so hard to which screen is the best one .

I got the 6p yesterday and it is a great phone. It is users like you that wish it had exact screen like note 5 because you know it has the best. Let me help you though, nexus 6p screen feels different from note 5. More close to note 4 screen which wasn't bad actually. But hey samsung phones suck right, I doubt you have ever used one of them, so I am not even sure why you feel the need to compare them to the 6p ?

You've got some real issues hey? The 6P is using "The latest generation AMOLED panel from Samsung". So are you implying the Note 5 does NOT use the latest generation AMOLED panel? Maybe the 6P has the same panel as the Note 6 will have then?
I realize its useless trying to reason with you as reasoning isnt your strong point... but its the same panel, they simply limited the max brightness for battery reasons likely.
Anywho in the future I'll be sure to remind anyone who dares compare the screen of a phone to one made by Samsung that they are idiots for doing so and shouldnt even bother
The outdoor viewing is what worries me the most, honestly. I had a Note 4 before this ip6+ and I remember a huge difference between that phone and this one as far as being able to read it outside.
Yup, me too.
I have an S6 now, and I can honestly say it's awesome in direct sunlight.
But then again I'd still rather have a Nexus anyday. For that one small thing, I will sacrifice and max out the brightness slider and cover the phone so I can see it if necessary.
Where is my Nexus anyway? It's in post limbo at the moment between my house and the local post office. Doh!!!
Sigh... Brighter is not better except in direct sunlight. The rest of the time it f's up all of the colors on the internet as the internet is designed to be viewed in sRGB color space. I swear a part of my spirit dies each time I hear people talking about how fabulous Samsung's oversaturated unrealistic screens look. Those colors are nothing but comic book land.
...I am crossing my fingers that the sRGB mode on this phone is half decent or it is getting returned ASAP.

Surely this can be fixed with an update to give an option for colour temperature though...
Make sure yours is not in econo mode. It takes all the pretty colors away and places a pee looking filter on everything. (but hey it does save some power )
According to one review I read, the prime is "Brighter, blacker blacks, decreased glare, and less backlight bleed on the Prime."

The TFP is on balanced mode in the pic. I see no difference visually between performance and balanced mode. I can see the color difference in econo mode though.

My screen isnt that yellow... The colors are ok but my touchpad is on par with it. Backlight bleed is still an issue with the Prime, just hope your one of the lucky ones with no bleed.
I have backlight bleed but its not too bad, i can deal with it.
I usually just run my prime with the lowest brightness setting with super ips mode turned on... Looks good and also saves power (i get good battery), plus i can perfectly see the screen in any condition unless im at the beach...
Could someone make some screen pictures of the 1st gen Transformer next to the Prime? I'm really curious how these compare colour wise.
Hey, this is really similar to the issue the iPad and iPhone had in the beginning.
iPad 2 News: What’s That Yellow Blotch On The iPad 2 Screen
Put simply, that means the glue holding the glass together is not completely dry. So if your iPad 2 is suffering from a case of yellow fever, don’t rush back to the store and try to exchange it. (Good luck with that, since waiting times for delivery of new units are now 2-3 weeks.) Just use it for a few days and the blotch should disappear, just like those on the iPhone 4.

I got my Prime yesterday, the first thing I noticed is the screen are very yellowish comparing to my old TF101.
I did took a few pictures but coz I'm a newbie I can't post links in my reply, if anyone wants to see it I can PM you the link or helping me post the links.
I was able to get two Primes. One from gamestop and one from Adorama. The grey one from amazon had a yellowish tint and made the gold one from adorama look amazing in comparison . They both have light leakage but I can only see it during bootup. imo if you are unhappy with the colors of the screen then send it back and pray for a better one. I think from now on I'm going to buy more than one and keep the better of the two. I also think the wifi is a little better on the gold one, but both are weak in comparison to my galaxy 10.1. I do find the prime to be a bit faster and smoother than the Samsung . I think the first thing anyone should install is thumbs keyboard best AP by a long shot.
I might be going crazy, but it does seem like the yellow on my 5 day old prime is slowly going away.
Maybe its the same issue the iphone 4/4s had where the glue has to dry? I know my 4s was yellow when I got it but now I dont see any yellow.
I think it has more to do with color temperature than anything. I get headaches staring at overly cool temps, so a yellow tint actually ends up being a bit of a plus in my book...

Agreed. Samsung is notorious for very cold screens. The screen on my Epic 4G Touch is downright blue, particularly noticeable when reading ebooks. By contrast, the screen on my Motorola Photon is much warmer and hence whites are better. Given a choice between a bit of a blue bias and a little yellow, and I'll take the latter any day.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk
Is the screen made by multiple manufacturers? With my HTC Sensation, Sharp makes some of the panels, and AUO makes the rest, and the Sharp panels are by far better than the yellowish AUO panels. Just throwing out a possible explanation.
Got my 32gb champagne Prime today. And also noticed the yellow screen. Don't know what store it came from because I bought it for ebay.
Coming from a Galaxy tab 10.1 and can compare them side by side the Prime is yellow and Galaxy tab is white.
Had a Motorola Xoom before and that also had this yellow stuff, not as much Prime but it was there.
Maybe I noticed the yellow more now because I coming from Samsung white screens.
Hopes it gets better with time because I have no chance to go and change it because it bought over ebay. Maybe it's the clue hat someone mentioned, may tab has been out on a journey over the seas and is cold and tiered so maybe when it have got som warm and rest it will perform better

Left is ogT right is TP
SCARY! hope mines not like that!
Sorry if this post doesn't really add much but I have to say, I love this device! It is absolutely solid and almost as easy to hold as the n7 with build quality that puts it to shame!
I don't know how anyone can say this thing feels or is cheap feeling at all. The finish on this feels awesome and the device has zero flex in it. I even like the shape! iPad can go to hell. 10 hours of battery life for my usage, an amazing screen and it is faster than any high end android device I've had a chance to use. Samsung and Google hit this thing out of the park.
I really hope whenever my n4 comes in that it can hold up to the example set with the 10.
Only thing I'm worried about is how long I will have to wait for my screen and body protector to come in the mail. Some cases and the mag power connector need to get here fast too.
Anyone else here feel the same?

Mine has pretty bad light bleeding at the top right corner. Noticeable when the screen is dark. The back also creaks a little if I press it...
But I do love this tablet. Samsung makes beautiful devices. Loved the GTab 10.1 and now this. The screen is stunning. I compared viewing a high-res 24mp image (6000x4000) with an Asus TF Infinity and the difference is staggering o.o Don't believe people who say the screen isn't that much better than 1080p. It sure is, providing you have high-res sources.

The negative reviews was basically Engadget and PCmag, the rest were positive but also mentioned the ipad 4 being superior. I have a few theories as to why this tablet is betting some hate despite the specifications and excellent Samsung manufacturing and design. I truly believe these theories to be quite accurate as well. The hate I believe stems from three camps. The Samsung haters(there are a lot including Engadget), the Infinity owners, and the ipad 3/4 owners.
The Samsung hater theory is self explanatory.
The Asus owners are basically trying to justify how crappy their tablet runs by emphasizing the few minor features that the infinity has over the Nexus 10.
The ipad 3/4 owners are the same as the infinity owners except their tablet runs great but they are still insecure and throw some hate at the Nexus 10 because they are jealous that their retina display got beat and how much thinner/lighther, less expensive, the Nexus 10 is. They also are hating on how cool it runs compared to the literally scorching ipad 3.
Basically player hating.
the screen is just beautiful and colors are not washed out like nexus 7.. didnt notice any light bleed, as long as I dont notice any bleed in my day to day use, I dont care if there is any.. I plan to use this to occasionally watch movies stored in my desktop.. for browsing or lugging around the house, nexus 7 will do..will wait for aokp build and root it..want to enjoy pure android a lil before I load custom rom..
Just got mine in...still setting it up but so far so good. The screen is absolutely amazing and the swipe keys work good as well. I can already say without a doubt that it does not suffer from the stuttering seen on the tf700. Love it love it love it

This is the experience I was expecting when I bought my Prime last year. This runs circles around the Prime and I agree with Tomatoes8 on his N10 hate theories. Can't imagine the tablet experience being much better than this. Also, the boot time blew my mind compared to the Prime. I would imagine with updates etc that the N10 will only get better.
I noticed that my Verizon Galaxy S4 is much dimmer compared to my Galaxy Nexus at any matched brightness, especially full.
The Nexus just has that blinding brightness at full and the S4 doesn't, especially next to each other.

This might help (from Gizmodo site)
"The Galaxy S4 uses one innovative approach to overcome this—when Automatic Brightness is turned on, the Peak Brightness becomes significantly brighter in high ambient lighting than is possible with Manual Brightness, up to as high as 475 cd/m2, which is 34 percent higher than is possible with Manual Brightness."

Both phones are on manual brightness, s4 has the auto tone turned off and screen mode turned to dynamic. Yes, the galaxy nexus is slightly brighter at max than the gs4 at full...esp the whites. I cant imagine it's defective or different than others...
It's pretty damned bright. I usually just crank the brightness...this is the first Android device I have used that I prefer autobrightness.
GS4 Dimmer Than Galaxy Nexus at Full Brightness
Here are some pics I snapped of both phones at full brightness with no auto-anything on and GS4 is on Dynamic for Screen mode (and no auto tone).
GS4 is on the right. Notice how the GNex is slightly brighter in all cases (and even more so in person- the whites just really blow out bright and are blinding white).
Is this normal or not? Do you think this comes down to difference in screens/hardware suppliers? GNex is on newest AOKP too if that matters for screen settings/calibration at all.
The GS4 is plenty bright to me but I question things when comparing these:

If it is indeed not as bright as the nexus, then it may be a faulty phone. The brightness of the phone or lack there of, should not make you question it.

Thanks for the feedback. Dansan, can you possibly post a similar comparison pic with the two phones for me to see what I am supposed to be seeing at max on both? I would really appreciate it.
Are any else's menu and back buttons also fairly dull at all times except for in the dark? I can always see them when they are lit up, but sometimes they are too dim even in decent light. Maybe this is all related.

Thinking, I concluded that, to clear up the confusion about if the panel is from Note 5, S6, Note 4, the best thing we can do is to put the Nexus 6P under the microscope. And if we can take pics, it would be great.
Has someone a microscope?
There's pictures showing the matrix of Note 4, S5, S6, etc in Phonearena to compare.

Here's what I managed to get with a Canon 100mm f/2.8 macro lens at 1:1 with a 5D Mk II. I did it handheld while the phone rested in a phone holder so it might not be fully in focus.
It's a 100% crop of a small part of the picture so you probably need a higher macro ratio to get a closer look. The screen is set at 100% brightness and showing a full white image. It looks like it's the same pixel layout as the S6 edge+ looks like it was set at half brightness.
Google already confirmed it's latest gen samsung panel: http://www.androidpolice.com/2015/09/30/confirmed-nexus-6p-has-latest-gen-samsung-amoled-panel/
Brightness is indeed (much) lower than S6/note 5, not sure why ...

I really appreciate a lot the work you have done. Honestly, thank you.
I investigated and the Note 4 shares the diamond shape of blue and red subpixels, and oval green subpixel with S6 and Note 5. I thought we would see more differences. But your comment about the Nexus 6P panel looks like the one of the S6 Edge+ with half brightness is good!
Hopefully something like a High Brightness Mode is hidden, like in the Nexus 6. If it's latest generation panel, we'll be able to make it brighter without burn-in.
Thank you ever so much, this has been extremely helpful.
Samsung previously never sold any of its latest gen AMOLED panels to any mobile phone manufacturer. Motorola phones from the past couple of years that used AMOLED panels were using those that were 1 or 2 generations behind the ones on Samsung flagships. That was its advantage and it looks like it might have changed its policy with the Nexus 6P.
I don't think it's that simple. Samsung could be selling to Huawei panels that are below the top grade but not bad enough to throw away - they may be using the highest quality ones for their Note 5 and S6 displays but providing those that didn't make the cut to Huawei for a good discount. That explains how some of us might be getting colour bands/shifts in the pink and green regions on our displays.
So I just went through the kernel defconfig to see what LCD panel it selects. It doesnt. I'm not sure yet how it works but I think it just uses a generic driver.
I wonder what's going on here. Did samsung manufacture a special panel for the Nexus 6p ? Or did they use an existing panel but just used some trick to lower max brightness ? In which case we might unlock higher brightness ...
Is there any way to turn the brightness up on the 6P yet? I like being able to increase the saturation with Ex Kernal, but no options for boosting brightness past stock yet. Is pushing brightness past stock even safe to do on the 6P? Or even possible?

AMOLED panels are made from a wafer. They simply use the panels from the centre of the wafer for their flagships and sell the ones from the border which will not be as good (uneven colors, lower brightness, ...).
Knowing that this is a hot topic on*/r/android, I brought up the fact that testing has shown that on the Nexus 6P, its display has a lower maximum brightness and higher display power consumption than seen on the Note 5—key indicators of the AMOLED panel generation—I received knowing acknowledgement. So it turns out that the display panel is the same, but that much like the practice of CPU/SoC binning, there is variation inherent in AMOLED panel fabrication. Here, Google was able to procure the lower binned, yet current-generation displays from Samsung for the Nexus 6P.

The guy at best buy let me play around with his working sample unit while he set up my preorder. That camera is amazing. I have wide hands and not long fingers....it was a perfect fit. I thought the N7 was good but the N8 just seemed to fit better. Can't reach everywhere on the phone one handed like I can on the N7 but that's ok.
I like writing it more than the N7.
It I mention the camera is amazing. 2x is just a game changer.
The black is a monolith.
I got the fingerprint friendly grey.
always bet on black
ill have the alcantara case on the beast so fingerprints matter not.
appreciate the johnny on the spot review boss... :good:
ok just checking but you said, "I thought the N7 was good but the N8 just seemed to fit better. Can't reach everywhere on the phone one handed like I can on the N7 but that's ok."
So it fits better than the N7 did in your hand, but you cannot reach everywhere on the screen like you could on the N7???? hmmmmm
I have no expectation of reaching everywhere on the 8.
It feels better....that's all I can say.
I still have my 7 and took it to Best buy to compare.
I can still handle it one handed, but like on the s8+, I sometimes maneuver it on my hand to reach parts of the screen. I don't mind that at all I'm used to it.

I love the way the note 8 feels in hand and I have the s8+ I always rest my phone on my pinky and my 3 other fingers are on the back of the phone.. so I can handle the big phones quite easy

It's not pinkish, is it? If so, I think it's my favorite color for this phone.

No it's because my lifeproof case on my s8+ was mirroring onto the back of the note 8

If anything, it's a bit lavender. Looks better in person than in pictures.

I just got to check one out at the Samsung booth at best buy. I have a Motorola Z Force, had the N7 and previous notes before that. I miss the pen. I was surprised to see that the width is pretty mich the same as my Z force. Its just about 3/8" taller when eyeballing them one ontop of the other. But the amount of screen real estate you gain is nuts. I like it, even more than he N7 and I was glad to read that I can get the bonus stuff wihout having to get some sort of phone plan/payment plan.
I watched the Destiny 2 trailer on a display model today and it was gorgeous. I didn't think much of the infinity screen before, but it's super sexy.

It is such a huge night and day difference with less bezels in terms of looks, but I usually run a case on my phones so it has never been important to me. But I do enjoy how the overall size of the device benefits from this. The taller slimmer profile will take a bit of getting used to though since my Moto Z feels almost square next to the N8. I guess I better order a good case to protect those nice curved panels.
diggin the positive banter on you experienced cats who are no stranger to the note series. this is my first ever samsung phone and its good to hear the long time users still loving it.
